The Greek Mirror World News Riots and Riches A story of justice and penance By Judith Doane A stranger arrived in the city of Athens yesterday morning, and with him came stories of a land far away. He told of a land called Egypt, which lies just across the Mediterranean Sea, on a continent called Africa. He told elaborate stories of criminals and justice. We, the people of Greece, are unfamiliar to the justice systems of other faraway places and perhaps we could learn and grow by their example. In Egypt, men and women are considered equals. Even this sets us apart from their people. Men and women stand together as

Riots and Riches
A Story of justice and penance by Judith Doane continued from page 1 Ammon suffered a great punishment for his crimes. His face was mutilated until he had no teeth left, his nose was broken to the point of diminishing his breathing, and he was no longer recognizable. He was then tied onto a large stake, driven into the dirt, and impaled. Four guards hit him with large bats until he was no longer alive. Ammon was executed for a crime so great in the Egyptian culture, that after the execution, the onlooking crowd cheered. They did not cheer for the life that was lost, they did not cheer for pride for their country or honor for themselves, they cheered for an angry reason, revenge, and for an important reason, justice. They want justice for their fallen leader and the life that was taken by the man being executed. There were riots after the execution. Many lives were lost other than Ammon’s. Four buildings were burned down, one of them containing five children and a pregnant women. The street guards could not stop the chaos. No one could. The young men of the city of Cairo were out of control, the beating of the criminal set them into a state of excitement and intensity that they could not come down from and as a result, they destroyed much of their beautiful city. The stranger came to Athens out of fear. He is afraid because three months after Ammon’s execution, the riots still have not stopped. His house was burned down and his daughter and son were killed, so he fled with his wife to Greece. The people of Athens have welcomed him with open arms. He has become very good friends with the city’s hero, Achilles. They can be seen frolicking in the park at any given time. When asked Achilles said: “We have become the best of friends, and Athens is lucky to have him.” I’d say our hero has found his hero.

The Situation of Warring States The relationship between different countries in the Zhou dynasty By Nick Wang We believe the great gods and goddesses control the world. According to Aleixo’s journal, we acquired more information about Zhou dynasty. The faraway eastern civilization has a completely different faith from us. But they don’t really have a religion. We have a similarity that we all know as astrology. In contrast, they believe that the changing of stars means the changing of their destiny. And the astrology is not only used in their daily life but also used in country politics. After the Spring and Autumn Period leaderships went to war, the number of vassal states of the Zhou Dynasty territory greatly reduced, the Zhou royal family lost world power. In fact the rulers attacked each other and the war continued. After three noble families, Zhao, Wei and Han, shared power in Jin. The pattern of the Warring States officially formed, the seven superpowers are: Qi, Chu, Qin, Yan, Zhao, Wei, Han. In addition to the Warring States, there are more big countries. Yue, Ba, Shu, Song, Zhongshan are other major powers. There are small countries like Zheng, Wei, the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, Lu, Teng, Zou, Fei, but their strength and influence are far less than the seven superpowers. They can only survive in the cracks of power, and eventually are destroyed by seven superpowers. In these seven superpowers, the strongest is Qing. According to the territory of Qin, the remaining six countries are in the east of Xiaoshan. Therefore, the six countries are also known as "Shandong six countries." continued on page 5

The Mauryan Empire of the Land India Exclusive Interview on the Mauryan Empire

by Kriish Parekh Ever heard of the land India? I’m sure that none of you have heard of it. India is a name of a land that lies in southeast Asia. Baako, a local Greek, was sailing alone in the ocean and suddenly a big storm hit his boat and caused him to reach an uncertain land unknowingly. With his interest of knowing something about the place, he conversed with the locals and gathered information about India and its recently founded empire. Below is going to be the conversation between Baako and Phocus (the newspaper journalist) regarding how the land is and what has been going on recently. Phocus : Baako, describe what was the land like? Baako : The land was uncultivated with lots of rocky regions and animals. It was really dark and gloomy and there were thousands and thousands of troops that belong to Chandragupta Maurya, the current ruler of India. Phocus : Interesting! How exactly did you feel when you stepped on that unknown land? Like, what was going on in your mind? Baako : I was full of excitement as everybody else on the land was unknown. In the beginning, I started getting goosebumps as I was really scared seeing the large armies. Then as I conversed with a few locals, I got a little more relaxed and started getting to know where exactly I am. Phocus : It must have been really scary! Who is Chandragupta Maurya and why does he have so many troops? Baako : Chandragupta Maurya is the new emperor of their land India. He had become an emperor a few years ago and had also got his first preceding over the Nanda dynasty and Magadha Mahajanapadas, which used to be located in the northwestern part of India. A few years ago he had defeated Alexander the Great and had conquered the northwestern part of India. Chandragupta Maurya in India has rapidly started expanding his power westward across central and western India. Chandragupta Maurya alone has also created an organized system of finance, administration and security. He has also founded the Mauryan Empire. Phocus : Wow! From what I heard it sounds to me like he’s a great man of India. Could you please give more information on the Mauryan Empire?

The picture above is of Chandragupta Maurya Baako : Of course. The Mauryan Empire is the one and only empire in the India which has just been recently founded by Chandragupta Maurya. The empire stretches from the northern natural boundaries of the Himalayas. As said by the local, the Mauryan art is really beautiful, and everything in the Chandragupta Maurya’ palace is made out of wood and stone similar to our art. The Mauryan architecture is mainly Asokan, which is classified into stupas ( building where one goes to meditate ), pillars, caves, and pottery. The stupas are constructed of brick and stone. Similarly to our Greek architecture, the Mauryan architectural pillars also have two main parts which are the capital and shaft. Not forgetting the Mauryan palaces, each and every wall of the palace has wonderfully adorned golden wines and silver birds. Phocus : Wow! That sounds like it’s undoubtedly beautiful. Thank you so much Baako for bearing with us and answering every question patiently. It’s highly appreciated. Baako : Not a problem at all.

The picture on the left is an example of a freestanding column with its two main parts called the shaft and capital.

A Great Eastern Civilization: Zhou Dynasty The relationship between different countries during the Zhou Dynasty By Nick Wang When we look at other parts of the world, do you know other civilizations thrive besides us? I think just few people know. But there is a great news from a traveler named Aleixo. He went through untold hardships, crossed a whole continent which took 2 years then he arrived on a miracle land, the local people called the land China. He stayed in China for 8 years. Now he has came back from the mysterious land China, and will now tell about his journey in China on our weekly special subject. China is a huge land. It is a thousand times bigger than our country Greece. Their country is called Zhou Dynasty and the emperor is the son of the sky. The Zhou dynasty has a very long history. It was established hundreds of years ago. The earliest period of Zhou dynasty is very powerful. West Zhou dynasty had actually perished over 300 hundred years ago 650 BC, because of the Feudal Princes’ rebellions. But the royal family ended the war and founded the east Zhou dynasty. From 400 hundred years until now 350 BC, the royal family has become weaker and weaker. The feudal princes in other parts of Zhou’s territory became more powerful and they fought each other for land. The Royal family has no more power, as the emperor became a puppet that the most powerful feudal prince could command him to give other vassal states orders. Now it is China's Warring States period, after the merger and war among all the vassal states in Spring and Autumn period. When Warring States began, the main vassal states were Qi, Chu, Yan, Han, Zhao, Wei, Qing. Last year 351 BC, recording Aleixo’ Journal, during the rule of Wei Lie, Emperor of Zhou Ji Wu, he

decided that Wei, Zhao, and Han were vassal states. He let Wei, Zhao, and Han share Jin’s land. One of the bigger vassal states, Jin, died out. He also admitted Tian Qi’s substitute, Lv Qi. Qi and Jin are the important states that helped the establishment of the east Zhou dynasty. At the end of Spring and Autumn period, the emperor’s calling was weak but still could command some small vassal states such as Lu, Yan, Song, and Zheng. It made the more powerful Qi and Chu could not deceive Zhou. So the things that the Wei Lie Emperor of Zhou did made that Royal family lose an ally. Qin in the Spring and Autumn Period was one of the weaker vassal state, so Qin rulers have been trying to change this situation. The ruler of Qin, ruler of Qin Xiaogong ordered the prime minister, a person of Wei Qin:Shang Yang to change this situation. Since then, Qin entered a stage of its rapid development. Shang Yang did many changes in ten years, through the introduction of organizational people households to change citizens living environment, giving awards and medals to changed lord made a series of political and economic reforms such as landlord system, so that Qin is wealthy and strong to become the Warring States superpower. Shang Yang was opposed by other old forces, so the king of Qin ascended the throne. In the same year, Qin Mei Shu, so far, Qin’ territory north on the county, south of Sichuan, east of the Yellow River and the Hangu Pass, it is hard to attack because of the terrain and therefore should first be referred to as "Tianfu male country." Coupled with Shang Yang, they created economic and political conditions for National Unification.

Exclusive Interview With Aesop Of Corinth The story of a Druid sacrifice By Sophie List Continued from page 1... Aesop, set the scene for us. What were the surroundings like? Where did the sacrifice take place? Well, we were in Hadul in the center of Celtica. The woods were dark and to be completely honest, I was terrified. A single Druid stood in the center of a wooded grove. It was clear to see he was a Druid. He wore a white cloak, his nails well kept, and his beard and hair were carefully trimmed. This sacrifice was very important to the Druids. So they thought it would be best to sacrifice another Druid in hopes the Gods would protect them. Can you describe the atmosphere? How was everyone else feeling? As I was the only outsider, everyone else was much more accustomed to the sacrifices. I think the atmosphere in general was full of adrenaline and perhaps a little hesitation or fear. Now, can you explain the sacrifice itself? They brought out another Druid named Elder Futhark and placed him on top of a stone altar. He had a rope tied around his neck. The first Druid was holding an extraordinarily sharp knife and a club. Before the sacrifice began Elder Futhark was forced to eat pollen grains from a mistletoe. The Druid said a few words in a language I could not understand. I will not go into as much detail as I could about the sacrifice because I do not want to relive it. To sum up the events Elder Futhark was choked, his throat was cut to create a “Fountain of Blood” as the Gauls call it, and finally after he was dead his head was smashed. Nearing the end sacrifice I felt like I was going to pass out, all the blood had drained from my face and my hands were clammy with sweat. I was astounded at how savage the practice was. I feared for my own life and knew I had to return immediately to Corinth.

Wow Aesop! That sounds like it was incredibly hard to watch. Thank you for sharing your story with us. Could you explain a little more about the rest of their religion or the Druids? Of course! Mainly The Gauls practice animism. This means that they give humanlike characteristics to parts of nature such as rivers, lakes, trees, and mountains. The Gauls also worship the boar and the ancestor God. However, the most important aspect of their religion is The Druids. The Druids oversee human sacrifice, as I talked about earlier, and animal sacrifices. They're also in charge of preserving the agricultural calendar and festivals which coincide with lunar cycles. They guard secrets of their society and hold extreme influence over the people. They also monitor religion and educate the people and the aristocracy. The Druids are the most important part of The Gauls’ society and because of them the society runs smoothly.

The Situation Of Warring States The Key Events of the Warring States period By Nick Wang continued from page 2 Because the vassal states are an important part of the Zhou dynasty. So in this week’ news, I will introduce one of the most powerful vassal states in Warring States period with history of Zhou emperor. When Tian Qi was established, it entered the Warring States period. Tai-gong was the first king of Qi. Tai-gong and his grandson Sun Huangong made schools in the capital of Qi, "provided the doctor's designation,” and recruited for scholars from everywhere. 386 BC the modern Zhou An emperor recognizes Tian family as Qi king. In the period when Qi Wei Wang and Xuan Wang ruled, many scholars help Qi, so Qi became the eastern academic and cultural center in the next decades. King Wei appointed Tian Qi as prime minister for political reform, then Qi become stronger and wealthy. 353 BC, Qi defeated Wei’ army in Gui Ling. In 341 BC, Qi defeated Wei in Ma Ling again. In 334 BC, Qi king met in Xu Zhou the king of Wei Hui Wang, then

officially granted himself king. Since then, a new superpower of Warring States rose.

I Traveled To Persia Persian Politics and Culture By Sophie List As the citizens of Greece know, we went to war with Persia between 492 BC and 479 BC. However, now we are on much better terms with them and we were able to learn about the inner workings of Persian politics. I recently went on a trip to Persia to learn about how Persia's political system works and about their culture. Firstly, the Persian empire is controlled by a single king who rules from a central place. Currently that king is Xerxes I son of Darius I. Xerxes has satraps who act as governors in Persia’s twenty provinces. The satraps are generally of Persian descent to help ensure loyalty. In order to ensure the satrap is following Xerxes’ commands, a secretary and a military official are sent to inspect their work. To make sure there is no treason or talk of rebellion, Xerxes has a secret police service that he calls “the eyes and ears of the King”. They travel around and provide him with information from all around Persia.

I learned that Persia’s economy is Picture of Xerxes I based largely on herding because their climate makes farming very difficult. The reason we don't trade with Persia is because Xerxes father, Darius, created a gold and silver coinage system used exclusively by the Persians. A difference between our culture and theirs is that after Xerxes conquers new land he adopts some of their rules to keep the people as happy as possible. He also allows all the people of

He also allows all the people of his empire to practice their own religion, customs and trade as long as they pay their taxes. However, the religion of the noble people and the Kings is Zoroastrian, named after the founder, Zarathustra. This religion was founded in 600 BC. Their religion is extremely different from ours as theirs is monotheistic and centers around one supreme God. After death they believe an eternal afterlife followed. This afterlife was full of either pleasure and luxuries or torment based on the God’s decision. This is fairly similar to our own religion. The final topic I learned about while in Persia was their military. All men are required to serve in the military from the time they are 20 until they are 50. This is similar to the Spartan military. All the men are trained in riding, archery, hand to hand combat, and mounted combat. The elite members of the army are called the Ten Thousand Immortals. They're called this because there are always ten thousands soldiers, no more and no less. Immediately after one of them dies, a new soldier is promoted to keep the number at ten thousand. One thousand of these men are personal bodyguards to the King. I talked personally to a couple of the solders. One of the men told me of an infamous quote by Xerxes, “Imagine what horrible fate awaits my enemies when I would gladly kill any of my men for victory.” This quote reinforced my belief of how rigorous and dangerous the Persian army is. My trip to Persia was incredibly enlightening. I learned so much about Persian politics and culture.

The Greatest Indian Religion : Buddhism

An interview with a local Indian By Kriish Parekh Below is the conversation that took place between Kleon the Greek journalist and a local Indian near the Ganges river. Kleon had travelled to India as a journalist with Alexander to fight an epic battle against the Indian Monarch Porus in 390 B.C. He stayed there for a couple of days and started gathering information on Buddhism : The Indian religion. Kleon : What is the greatest religion of India? Local : Buddhism is one of the most important religions Kleon : By who and when was Buddhism founded? Local : Gautama Buddha founded Buddhism and it has just been recently created a few years ago. Kleon : Wow! That’s Awesome. Could you please tell me something about Gautama Buddha? Local : Gautama Buddha is born and brought up in Nepal in 400 B.C . He was a prince who belonged to a very luxurious family. Since childhood he always wanted to be a religious leader, but his father was always against it. Thinking that every day, one day he walked out of his palace and noticed an old man, a sick man, and a dead man. That’s the time he decided to become a holy man. Kleon : That’s something different but very interesting. Could you please tell me some more about his road to Buddhism? Local : Sure. Gautama first started studying the rigorous ascetic practices and the various methods of meditation with different religious teachers. But that didn’t really help. One day, however, before few years, he was offered a bowl of rice from a young girl and he accepted it. From that very moment he realized that strictness was not the way to achieve liberation, and from then on he kept that in his mind and started motivated people to follow a path of balance. That very night, he meditated until dawn and purified his mind and attained enlightenment. From then on, he earned a title of Buddha. Kleon : Wow! That sounds astounding. Can you please tell me what makes Buddhism such a great and an important religion?

The picture above is of Gautama Buddha meditating with his followers Local : Of course! The main idea of Buddhism is that one must live a moral life. We all Buddhists followers believe in nonviolence, karma ( the deed one does ) and cycle of rebirth. Every Buddhist follower aims to reach Nirvana, that that could be done by meditating, following the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. That’s what makes it such a great and an important religion. Kleon : Interesting. Could you please tell me what are the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Paths? Local : Yes absolutely. The Four Noble Truths are : - Life is full of suffering and sorrow. - The cause of suffering is non-virtue. - The only cure for suffering is to overcome non-virtue. - The way to overcome non-virtue is follow the Eightfold path. The Eightfold Paths are right views, right aspirations, right speech, right conduct, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right contemplation. Kleon : Wow! This is unbelievable. Buddhism is really different from our religion back home in Greece. Thank you so much for answering all the questions patiently it really means a lot. Local : Not a problem at all.

Interview with Darius I An Interview with the new pharaoh of Egypt By Judith Doane There is a land across a vast sea to the south called Egypt, a country on the continent of Africa. Egypt is going through a significant time in its history, the transition from one pharaoh to another. Their last pharaoh was assassinated less than three weeks ago and the city of Cairo was in a state of sadness for many days. They had just lost their leader, a member of their family. Can this new pharaoh live up to the last one’s standards? I have here with me the new pharaoh of Egypt. Please welcome Darius I, ladies and gentlemen. So, Darius, I heard through the grapevine that you are also the leader of the Persian empire. Is this true? Yes, actually, I owe all of my success and glory to my armies and my philosophers for their aid in my conquests of my many empires. Why did you choose to conquer Egypt, other than its exquisite culture and beautiful land? That’s a hard question to answer because there is not just one reason. As a ruler of previous empires I knew what was really important when choosing your location. And what is important? The people, the people make all of the difference. If the land has a gracious people who obey the law and fear their leader, then that is a good place to settle. If the land has a rebellious people who are disobedient, in most cases, not so much. Will you take the name Pharaoh? That’s a tough question, I don't want to take they religion and government for granted but I would like the name pharaoh, yes.

Page 9

I see. So was it the people of Egypt that made you choose it to conquer over all of the other magnificent countries in the world? Yes, I think it was. They are truly a magnificent people. I am flattered that they call me their pharaoh and enlightened every day at their actions and in their words. Egypt has been a relatively passive country in the past centuries. Are you going to change that? No, I have no reason to disrupt the Egyptians’ way of life. Egypt is and will remain in a passive state. What are you going to change about Egypt in your rule? For starters, I’m going to bring the employment rates up. Egypt is at an all time low of job holding citizens. Outrageous though it is, the only class that has a rate of employment over 75% are the slaves! How do you plan on creating jobs? Most people have the ability to be merchants, they just don't have enough money to buy the initial inventory. So I will give loans, without interest, to citizens from my personal holdings. Hopefully that way we will be able to employ as many citizens as possible in a short amount of time. Thank you, Darius, for talking with me. I am honored to be in the presence of the new Egyptian pharaoh. This has been truly enlightening and I am certain that you will make Egypt a better place during your rule. Thank you, that really means a lot! This is such a critical time for Egypt, and I know that we will make it great. Needless to say, this is a big change for the country of Egypt, and it will be interesting to see how the Egyptian people reacts. The pharaoh is a big part of the Egyptian culture. He is both important in government and in religion.

Also there is a new prison being built for some of the most wanted criminals. The prison will have multiple cells that are dug out by hand in the side of the hill. There will be no windows in any of the cells. The only view the inmates will have is the hall way through the bars. The bars are made out of solid metal which will make it almost impossible to break through and the bars on the door will be extremely heavy so it will be very difficult to push the door open. The authorities of Athens and Greece say that this will be the most secure prison that Athens have ever seen.

It has 12 bedrooms, a kitchen, multiple bathing rooms, a dining room for the men, 2 rooms for storage, and a women's sitting room. The roof was covered with reeds and it was two stories. The rooms were tiled so that they can be kept cool during the warm days in the summer, but occasionally in the winter, they would need to light a fire in a metal basket to keep themselves warm. The house is beautiful on the interior and exterior so congratulations

Local News Festivals By: Sara Younk

There is a festival next week in honor of Dionysus. The festival will begin with a sacrifice to the gods then the competitions will commence. The first of the competitions is the competition of playwrights. Those who accept the challenge will compete to see whose play is the best. The winner of this event is to be rewarded with the best wine at the festival. Competitions of music and poetry are to follow the next day. The theme of the poems this year is to be, of course, wine, the craft of Dionysus. The music competition is going to be an open mic where you can sing whatever you wish. There will be athletic events in the days to follow, such as track, discus, shotput, and other games that have not been determined. There is to be a great feast on the last day in which those who plan to attend are required to bring something to contribute to the meal. There will be a toast at the end of the night where everyone will drink wine in honor of our beloved God Dionysus. The festival of Thesmophoria in honor of Demeter and Persephone is just around the corner and the events have been planned. This event is for ladies only to mourn over Demeter’s loss of her daughter for the hike to Demeter’s sanctuary everyone can take the day to set up camp. The day after everyone may not eat any solid food except for pomegranate. All women should prepare their tauntings so they are prepare to taunt in iambic verse later in the day. Health By: Sara Younk

Many people think that becoming sick is to be blamed on the gods. However there are some who are trying to determine if there is a cause of these diseases. Hippocrates, the leader in this search for reasons has begun studying illnesses. He has begun making recommendations on how to keep yourself healthy and teachings others how to do so. He suggests keeping warm in cold weather, eating healthy, and staying away from others who are sick to avoid sickness yourself. Hippocrates is also looking for sick volunteers to be studied and some apprentices to help him with his search for cures. Hippocrates has already made astounding progress in the medical world by finding a cure for what he calls a cold. He has also come up with an oath to help set standards for those who are helping him cure people. The oath goes as follows: “I will help the sick according to my ability and judgment but never with a view to injury or wrong.”.

Athen's newest temple: The Parthenon By: Alex Romano

Gods is coming up! This years parade will be to Athena, Zeus, Nike, and Ares. The parade will start on the lower levels of the Acropolis and end at the very top at the site of the new temple. Once there, there will be food, wine, dancing, and music. There will be plays including Oedipus, The Odyssey, and The Illiad. Everyone is encouraged to come and join the festivities. Our lovely Priestess Achima has just given birth to a daughter! Her name is Elektra. Achima will be returning to her religious duties within the coming weeks. Our very own soldiers have left to fight the Persians, and protect us all. We don't know if they will return, but we can pray to Ares, Nike, and Athena that they return safely home in due time. Daily ceremonies are held in the Acropolis dedicated to them.

Plans for a new temple on top of the Acropolis are in the works. The new temple will be to the goddess Athena. Hopefully, she will give us her spirit of victory in the Greek-Persian war. The temple will be the biggest one in the state to date. In order to make this a reality the engineers are asking for any and all free hands to aid in the construction of the temple. Building starts in three weeks, so if you are interested show up to the Acropolis when it begins. The Temple will feature a new style of architecture to the city, Ionic. It will set a new standard for elegance amongst all other temples. The temple will be called the Parthenon. It will stand 45 feet tall, and will surely please Athena. The frieze will be 525 feet, and the pediment will be 228 by 101 feet. It's columns will be 34 feet tall. This temple should become the main place everyone comes to worship for many generations to come. The idea was proposed by Aesop. He has been a priest for over 10 years and has seen the current temples slowly become rundown. He felt it was time for a new temple in the Acropolis. One that would stand above all the others. His plan that originated over a year ago is now about to be put into action.

become mandatory. Citizens must visit a temple at least once a week in order to please the gods, and to continue to bring prosperous times to our city. Whether it's a ceremony dedicated to Zeus or Hermes citizens should come and pray for good fortune. Aesop, the mind behind the Parthenon, has left to the Marathon plain with our soldiers to aid them. He will be praying and blessing all the soldiers as they fight for Greece. Aesop felt he should go because it was his duty to the gods to help them. Pray he returns safely.

Local News- Politics New laws in Athens By Josh Petrocelli With the recent change in government to democracy new laws are being put into play that fit the people's needs and wants. One of the new laws that the people have voted for states that you have to have a license to ride your horse because too many children are getting injured because they are too young to drive a horse. Also new sword laws state that you no longer need to conceal your sword as long as your sword is not longer than 50 cm and that you have done a background check. Anything longer than 50 cm has to be kept on your property at all times along with spears. Also if you want to carry a bow around with you to public places you are only allowed to have ten arrows on your person, but if you are on your property then you don’t have a limit on the amount of arrows you can have on you. These laws apply to all people in Greece unless you are a member of the military.

Should girls go to school By Josh Petrocelli

The recent debate about whether or not girls should go to school has brought upon a vote by the council in Athens. There are only a couple of days left on the vote until it is decided whether or not girls should go to school. At the moment 60% of the votes say no, that girls shouldn’t go to school and the other 40% say yes, say that they should. The majority of people that say yes that girls should go to school are girls and women that want an education, almost no men voted on the yes side. The 60% of people that voted no were either men, women that didn’t want an education or women that didn't want to make the men upset or angry with them.

Unemployment and jobs By Josh Petrocelli With the recent unemployment rate being so low the Athenian economy is in the best stage it has ever been in. Since the people of Athens don’t need support or help from the government, the government can now focus on its military and seeing what the people want and need. There is also no more debt in the Athenian government because we don’t need support from anyone else. We even have the ability to help other city-states and countries which will bring us more allies in the long run. If our economy ever collapses then we will have some allies to help us.

Week's Weather By: Franceska Halloran This week’s weather is going to be a great week to get everything done and do whatever you need to. On Monday we will have a very sunny day with temperatures in the high 80s. Go ahead and make plans to do anything you need to do outdoors and pray to Demeter to make sure that your crops stay harvested. On Tuesday, we will have a day just like Monday except showers in the late evening. Poseidon wants to make sure that everything stays hydrated with light showers. On Wednesday there will be on and off heavy rain with a temperature of 75. Stay in doors because we are not quite sure when the showers will occur. Poseidon might cause flooding in some areas. On Thursday, we will go back to sunny with no chance of rain with a temperature in the low 90s. Friday, Apollo will cool it down so that the temperature remains in the 70s all day. Saturday, bless up. It will be a great day with temperatures in the 80s all day and make sure you go to all the sporting events and any festival that happens. Have a great week, stay dry, stay safe.

Life of a Greek Girl By: Franceska Halloran My mom was able to educate me. Most of my friends don't know how to read or write, but I was very lucky. My mother was able to homeschool me and also teach me how to run a home. Once I was a nearing the age of 12, I was told to bring my dolls to the temple of Artemis which proved that childhood was over. As I became an adult, within that year I'd marry. It was only an amount of time until I would become a mother. I will always be controlled. As a young girl it was my father who made all my decisions but once I marry, that role would be passed to my husband. After all, it is in the hands of my father who I had to marry. All thanks to my mother, I learned how to spin, weave, sew, and cook. All these will come in handy when I need to raise my own family and run my own house. It would be my job to teach my child how to read and write since I most likely will not be able to afford to send her to school. It's not fair. My brother who is only a year older than me got to go to school at the age of seven.

This is the school that my brother went to.

He also got to follow our father and learn all the importance in trading and sometimes even training for battle. We were always together when we were younger because our mother raised us together but once he went to school, I rarely ever spoke to him. Our families stayed close but once I married, he rarely ever spoke to me. It is very hard to grow up as a girl in ancient Athens. There is all this pressure that your son must be strong and have no flaws or else he will be abandoned on a mountain. I've seen that many of my neighbors’ children don't grow up and it's all because of the curse that babies have a difficult time living past the first few days of life. That is the reason parents don't name their child until he or she lives past a week. That is the reason that ever since I was old enough I prayed to the goddess Eileithyia so that my child could be born healthy and strong. Looking back at growing up in Athens was very difficult because all women had to do was provide for the men and have strong children to give to the community.

Sports & Recreation Season overview Morgan Prentice

Bird’s eye view of the Olympic Games. This painting is what the area and crowd looks

With the sports season ending, this certainly doesn't mean the excitement has gone too! This season has definitely been one of the highest gossip filled years ever in sports history! Between Jocasta sneaking into the Olympics, and the surprising winners, this certainly wasn't a boring season. Even before the Olympics this year, lots of rumors flew around, such as second place champ Astylos spilled out the dirty little secret of trying to rig another player's chariot to fall apart during the Olympics! Along with that rumor, Varastades, future king of Armenia, confirmed his family tree to be real, and returned back into the games, only to unfortunately lose. Sadly, after this season, we had to say our last goodbyes to the retiring players: Aarōn, Balios, Hypatos, Iesos, and Kephalos. We will certainly miss those ‘God like players’ dearly, but we also are very excited to see all of the new upcoming members. We will never forget about the horrible experience during the javelin throw! With four injured and one dead the next olympics will certainly have to change the safety rules. Let's not leave out the embarrassing moment of Dysis not being able to pick up the weight in the lifting competition. What made his situation even worse was that he stomped his way off of the fields yelling,“Zeus has purposely cursed me!” Hopefully in four years, he'll be able to recover from such an embarrassing experience. Next, we move on to some of the top athlete highlights of this season. With Hypatos quickly making his way to the number one athlete in the long jump. He made everyone else seem weak compared to his monstrous leap. Later that day, he made a new distance record for the longest jump at a whomping eight feet!

Before all of our hearts broke, our dear Apollo was easily winning in the running races, but then tragedy fell upon him leaving his leg hyperextended. It's hard to say what exactly happened to him, as there are many stories being told. Anyways, our prayers are with Apollo! Taking a strong lead for his third time in a row, Myron, still is the star of discus. Without these players this sports season would never have been as entertaining as it was. With all the new gossip to keep us going for the next four years, I hope it is enough time for our contestants in the next Olympics to heal and get the training they need.

This picture is one of the many games in the Olympics, horse racing. Here you can see a painting of what a horse race in the Olympics would look like, rough and dangerous.

Interview with Apollo Morgan Prentice

Apollo's painted portrait - right after winning his first ever Olympic Games.

The Greek Olympian Apollo posing for yet another portrait after his winning his first Olympic Games.

-Interviewer, “Apollo, what are your thoughts about this year's Olympic Games”? -Apollo, “It was all in all terrible.” -Interviewer, “Well, we hope you’re better by the next games.” -Apollo, “Thank you, I hope so too!” -interviewer, “Now, how do you feel about Jocasta sneaking into the games?” -Apollo, “I definitely think it was a nice twist to the games this year. Also I'm not sure about anyone else, but after she won and we found out who she really was and I was shocked! I never thought a woman could beat a man in sports, but she proved that wrong.” -Interviewer, “Yes, we were all very shocked to she who she really was! Another question we wanted to get your opinion on is do you think Dysis reacted in an obscure way?” -Apollo, “It was clear to see that he was frustrated, but I think he should've handled the situation better. Blaming Zeus for the things you lack really isn't a Olympian way to approach things. If I were him, I know I would've done differently.” -Interviewer, “I think we all were thrown off by his negative actions toward Zeus.” -Apollo, “Yes, and like I said before if I were him I would have chosen another way to go about the situation.” -Interviewer, “Alright, you heard it here first from Greek Time News. Thank you Apollo!” Page 2

Sports/Recreation 495 BC Olympics Reily New

This year's 495 BC Olympics was not a series of games to miss! Jocasta from Thebes attempted to sneak into the Olympics to watch her sons participate in their first Olympic Games. Now, everyone must attend the games naked so they cannot try and lie about their gender. Also, Hercules led his team with the easy win over the unknown Spartan wrestler in the championship round. Next, Scout running more aggressively than expected began to merge into Apollo's lane which caused him to trip and hyperextend his leg, so now Apollo is out for a few months. Another breathtaking event this year was javelin. Theben powerhouse, Ajax, blew away the competition with an impressive 100p throw for his first round. If you thought that was far, he ended the event with a memorable 125p throw bringing home the gold. The biggest reaction we got from a player is when Dysis accused Zeus of cursing him after his humiliating attempt to lift the weight. A similar situation accrued in the 491 BC Olympic games when Medios, accused all the gods of sabotaging him since he received second place in the championship chariot race against his rival, Dyson. Now, Myron had the most superior discus throw taking the olive wreath for the second time in a row! Now, all city-states are neck and neck for the overall championship. With the final event being the 100p dash, Athens, Sparta, and Thebes all pick their fittest, strongest, athletes, Metron, Lycus, and lastly, Caedmon. Each athlete ran side by side for the majority of the race until Athenian racer, Metron, powered through, getting the win for Athens. After the race, we spoke with 2 of the 3 racers.

Famous artist, Gnosis, painted the following picture of Sparta and Thebes entering the arena

Interviews Reily New

First, We spoke to Caedmon about his tragic loss in final event. Interviewer- “Caedmon, what happened? Each contestant was side by side.” Caedmon- “Well with what happened in the 400p stade, I didn't want to jeopardize another athlete's career, and so I decided to not run as aggressively as I did before.” Interview- “So you are willing to jeopardize your citystate’s reputation to not ruin another player's career?” Caedmon - “ Because I tripped another player, I won my second race and so I would not want to jeopardize another person.” Interviewer- “Well, thank you for your time and I am sorry for your devastating loss.” Next,we spoke to bronze medalist, Lycus. Interviewer- “Lycus, how do you feel about today's loss?” Lycus- “Well, I thought we were going to win it all but the Athenians were able to pull through and finish strong.” Interviewer- “Do you think that this will be a problem you face in future Olympic Games?” Lycus- “I can tell you that we will not ever come that close to winning again and fail to succeed!!” Interviewer- “Okay, thank you for your time and I hope nothing but success in your upcoming seasons.”

Sports & Recreation By: Iain Frumiento Box Scores and Game/Match Recaps For this year's olympics, there were the sports that consisted of Boxing, Track & Field, and horse riding. This was a pretty intense season, with the track and field times within hundredths of seconds, and some of the boxing matches going down to split decisions!

The Stadium where the first Olympics were held, in Olympia, Greece.

Boxing Olympia - The athletes stepped up to the lines to compete hard this year on the Track. Starting out with the 100 pous stade, Caedmon won the event with a time of 11.2, but the 2nd place time was Iain Frumiento followed close behind with an 11.3, by Cairo. Finishing off the podium, with a time of 12.6, was the fan-favorite, Gabe. Cademon spoke to the media after the race, and here's what he had to say, "The competition on the track was really high, the intensity was up there, and the conditions were great. But I have to give a huge shoutout to the Gods, especially Zeus, for putting on this event, and the fans, for cheering me on, for giving me motivation before, and during the race. I'd also like to congratulate the other two men, they put up a great race, and made this a fun Olympics for me."

Track and Field

In the 800 pous run, there was a pretty big blowout, a no doubter, from the fan-favorite, Oceanus. With an amazing, world record setting time of 1:45:2, Oceanus had everyone on their feet! However, once the race was over, the fans kept on cheering. There was a huge battle for the places of second, third, and fourth. It was neck and neck up until the finish line, where the judges decided the places. Alkeides took home 2nd with a time of 1:51.4, Calliope got 3rd, just nudging the 4th finisher, Evander, out of the podium. Alkeides told us what the end of the race felt like, ”I knew it was going on a close race from the start. As I was rounding the final turn, I found that last bit of strength in my body, and left it all on the track. Both the other two men ran very well, and they also could've won first if they wanted to." This was the closest finish in the 800 pous race yet. There is great potential looking at the rest of the field for the runners for more possible races like this, but this one will be remembered.

Sports and Recreation, Pg.4

Olympia - In the boxing matches today, Eagle Iain Frumiento (29-0, 29 KO) is up against Iacchus (53-5, 26 KO). These two have been going at it all day, and the fight is currently in the 11th round. It has been a very even fight between the two, and we do not know a winner yet. Currently, the judges are leaning towards Eagle, a slight lead of 6-5, 7-4, & 5-6. The judge that was giving Eagle a big lead spoke to the media during the break, and here's what he had to say: “He looks better most likely because of his experience. He’s defending much better than Iacchus, and he’s able to counter with some nice combos.” In other matches, Patroclus (27-12, 9 KO) defeated Niobe (9-4, 1 KO), and Damon (5-2, 2 KO) defeated Eros

Olympia - Right Now, the current leader, and fastest horse on the Iain Frumiento track is Heinrich, currently holding a lead so big, that his jockey, Linos, says, “The horse is not being pushed. He is fast enough, but we don’t want to increase any chance of injury.” The next horse race is scheduled two weeks from tomorrow, and most everyone there is likely going to be cheering on Heinrich. Before this year, all the races were controlled by Troy. See HORSE, pg. 6

Horse Racing

The wrestlers So let’s talk about the Athenian Ponies - the best wrestling team in the Greek world. They just won the Olympics last year. The first ever wrestling in the Olympics was in 708 BC. They had an amazing record in the games, only losing one match. The Ponies have all the same wrestlers on the team this year that they had last year, so hopefully they can pick up right where they left off. The best wrestler they had last year isHercules . He is coming off an incredible season. Hercules went 17-0. He won every match 3-0, outscoring his opponents 51-0! Hercules was never put on his back, hip or shoulder. Hercules recently had to get surgery on his leg. He likes adventure and he tried to run to Sparta in one day and fell off a cliff in the Thermpoylae Pass. Let’s hope he comes back from his injury and has another fantastic season. Another person we should be talking about is Raymondiko who had an amazing rookie season. He went 15-2 throughout the whole year, but unfortunately, he did get taken out in the Olympics in the first round by an opponent from Corinth. Raymondiko is an amazing young man, and he is proving himself well, let's hope this year he can go 17-0 and win in the next Olympics. Now, let’s talk about Sebagoistocles. This young man is also coming off his rookie year too, but he only got a little half way through his year and was not able to participate in the Olympics. He went 8-2, but before he could get to his Olympic match, he got shot in the leg by an arrow from one of his opponents that he was going to wrestle against in the Olympics. The shooter was from and is now suspended for the rest of the year, and will not allowed to go to the Olympics because of what he did. Let's hope Sebagoistocles can come back from that injury and have a fantastic Olympics next time. GO PONIES!! Written by: Keith

Athenian Olympic Team Profiles

The throwers

The next event that I will be writing about is shot put, and how people went to it and watched it. But it is not the coolest sport to watch because it is boring just watching balls get thrown. Now let's talk about the Athenian Strong Guys - an appropriate name for the team. These guys went 25-0 last year and they won the Olympics last year. They are predicted to win again and again and again if their team stays healthy, but we all know that won’t happen because every team get injured every now and then. The main guy that I want to talk about is Donald Duckiko. This man is so strong he can throw that shot putl so far that you can’t see the ball anymore - it is in outer space by the time the event is done and that means that he wins every contest. All of the work that he has done has paid off and and the rest of the team is so happy that he has won all the event that they go out and party all night till they can't walk anymore from drinking too much wine.

The Runners Next let’s talk about the Athenian Trackers - the running team. No one has seen runners like these in a long time. These are not your average runners - they run all day and night! They know how important training is and they all want to win the olive crown. We certainly don’t know how they get any sleep because whenever we see them every single one of them are practicing, and running, that’s ALL that they do! They do nothing else! We don't even see them with their wives! There are two people that I really want to talk about and their names are Barniko and Rudolphiko. Let’s talk about Baney first. He’s the fastest runner in the world. Some say he can run a stade in 20 seconds - he’s that fast! If you don’t remember a stade is the length of the stadium. You don’t even see him run when he is racing because he’s already at the finish line way before everyone else is done. We were all devastated to hear when one day Barniko was running, and he tripped over a branch and he fell on his face. He broke his nose! Which also broke us Athenians because once he tried running fast again every time the wind pushed against his nose it made his pain unbearable. This lead to him not being able to race for the rest of the year, and he may not be going to the upcoming Olympics. Let’s hope he can come back from his injury. Now let’s go to Rudolphiko. This young man is coming off the best rookie year ever in the history of running. This guy is so fast in the two stade race that no one can catch up to him. His only challenge is his teammate, Barniko. Rudolphiko and his speed made him win the Olympics last year. While doing so, he crushed everyone in the two stade distance. It was definitely a crazy sight to see how badly he beat the other contestants from Corinth, Sparta, and Ionia. Some even made the choice of dropping out of the race before it even started because because they knew that they were going to lose no matter what. Jethroe is the Athenian long distance runner. In a practice race at the 10 stade distance, he gave his opponents a head start by 5 minutes and initially they all lapped him five times, but then he went and he caught up to them with his amazing speed and won the race. He ended up in first place, and people wondered what kind of drug he was taking and how it was helping him with his running. Rudolphiko was not taking drugs. He was running and running and running and that’s all he would do, nothing else, and he would eat so healthy that no one could beat him. There was nothing anyone could do to beat Rudolpiko, nothing at all. Opponents would just cry and leave the race; it was the funniest thing in the world. Written by:Keith

SPORTS & RECREATION Player Highlights By: Liam George

This year's Olympics is definitely one that will go down in history. From Hercules taking the olive wreath in wrestling to Apollo breaking his leg in the two hundred yard sprint, hear all about it here on players’ highlights. The Athenian star athlete, Hercules, came in clutch in wrestling. Hercules pinned his opponent with thirty seconds left in the championship match versus Sparta. This victory was no surprise to Athens. According to Hercules’s trainer, Alex, he said, “Hercules was put on this Earth by the gods to wrestle. I have never seen such raw talent in all my years of training.” After talking to Hercules he said, “Personally, I want to give a thanks to Zeus for giving me the strength in the final minute of the match to take home the victory for Athens.” Such a humble man he is. Hercules didn't stop there. He also got third in two hundred yard sprint and fourth in the javelin throw. Young Hercules is one outstanding athlete and will definitely make Athens proud for many years to come. Doesn’t everyone just love an underdog story? Yes, so does Corinth. Fabio had the gods shine down on him that day. The thirteen year old took what was supposed to be Apollo's olive wreath in the marathon race. This young superstar was an unknown kid from Corinth. According to his trainer, “I knew he was good, but even this surprised me. He dug deep and pulled out some determination that has just never been seen from Corinth. Corinth doesn't make champions, but I guess today they do.” When talking to Fabio he just said, “Some people want to win, and some people really want to win.” Fabio left for Olympia as a kid and will return to his family and city as not only a man, but a champion.

On the left is a painting of the 200 yard sprint in the 495 BC Olympics.

Sparta also brought with them some amazing athletes. Apollo and Cesar are some of the most remarkable athletes in this year's Olympics. Apollo came in the athlete with the highest expectations. In his first, and worst event, he broke his leg. A couple strides into his two hundred yard sprint, he was tripped and somehow hyperextended his leg. This tragic event was devastating to Apollo and his family considering he was supposed to easily win the marathon. Shortly after, I was lucky enough to find Apollo and ask him how he will rebound from this tragic injury. He said, “First I need to heal, then I'm going to make a comeback that will be talked about by the gods for centuries.” Confidence and desire are keys in competition this stiff. Although Apollo was a let down for Sparta, Cesar certainly wasn't. Cesar won the olive wreath for two events, shot put and triple jump. Cesar effortlessly won the shot put event. The competing athletes weren't even remotely close to Cesar's great strength. After a quick interview Cesar said, “I won because I’m the best. Zeus himself wish he had my strength.” Shortly after the Olympics Caesar went missing during a terrible storm. It's been two weeks and he has still yet to be found.

"Right punch, left punch, uppercut, he's unstoppable!" Of course they are talking about no other than Mycenaea’s very own champion boxer, Eagle. The reigning champion from the last Olympics in 491 BC is here to surprise Olympia once again. In the championship round it took Eagle every round and Eagle eventually won by decision. Eagle was the first boxer in the history of the Olympics to go undefeated. Hermes almost went undefeated in 487, but lost in the championship. After asking Eagle how his punches packed so much power he said, "It's a gift. I used to hit weaker than a girl, but I prayed for strength every day. One day while going into town for some bread this guy comes up to me and punches me. After wiping away my tears I stood up and knocked him out cold. I have never stopped thank Zeus since that day." Such a motivational story.

Brothers separated at birth competing against each other for the olive wreath. Of course I'm talking about Ajax of Thebes and Kronos of Argos fighting for olive wreath in javelin throw. They might be brothers, but they are completely different. Ajax grew up with his father who told him stronger is better. On the other hand Kronos grew up with his mom who expressed the importance of form over strength. On Ajax’s first throw he threw an impressive one hundred meters. Always one upping his older brother, Kronos threw an astonishing one hundred and seven meters. Then Mr. Muscles himself throws one hundred and ten just for younger brother to throw one hundred and fifteen. Out of pure muscle and frustration, Ajax threw a personal and world record of one hundred and twenty five meters. Even his own brother couldn't match that.

Sparta Reily New The Spartan leadership has officially banned most games from their society because it is a distraction to the young boys they are trying to prep for their military career. Some activities they kept were horseback riding, running, javelin, discus, jumping, and wrestling, since these were useful to them on the battlefield. Earlier today, we spoke to the Spartan leader. Interviewer- “What helped you make your final decision to ban most games from your society?” Spartan Leader- “The young Spartan boys are struggling with their training unlike the previous trainers.” Interviewer- “Do you feel like you are taking away the childhood of young Spartans everywhere?” Spartan leader- “Absolutely not. We are a city-state based on a military career. If anything, we should not have let these games be adapted into Sparta in the first place.” Interviewer- “You clearly have an idea on how you would like

your city-state ruled. Thank you for your time.”

Art The First Drama Play Ever! - by Emma Xu

The first plays are finally out, and I went to watch them. The first plays were performed in the Theatre of Dionysus, built in the shadow of the Acropolis in Athens. The theater was full of people; it was more than expected! Even women with babies and old people kept coming in. It was incredible that the first plays were related to religious festivals, especially to the god Dionysus! It was performed outdoors, with little or no scenery supporting. There one actor on the stage is called a protagonist and a chorus of people behind him helped him to tell the story. The actor was wearing colorful costumes and stylized masks. The theater was very large with open-air structures that took advantage of sloping hillsides for their terraced seating. Because of drama's close connection with religion, the theater was located near sanctuaries. The theater is pictured here, the Theater of Dionysus in Athens and is situated in the sacred precinct of Dionysus at the foot of the Acropolis. Following yesterday’s dramatic play, I was inspired, so I did some research about the most famous Athenian playwrights in Greece right now. They are Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. And here comes the Tragedies! Tragedies were written by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. It is a type of play that tells a story of human suffering and disaster. This is also my favorite type of play

The theater pictured here is the Theater of Dionysus in Athens and it is situated in the sacred precinct of Dionysus at the foot of the Acropolis.

Picture of the theater taken by Emma Xu, Greece

The purpose of Tragedy is thought to stir up and then release the emotions of pity and fear from the human. Each of them also had written some famous plays. One of Aeschylus’s famous play is called The Oresteia; it was about a powerful family turned to be murdered. This shows the audience how horrible the misfortune, and the God could bring down even the greatest heroes. One of Sophocles’s play was called Oedipus. It was about a man who killed his stepped parents and married with his real mother. This shows that whatever a human does to change his life, human's fate is always destined by gods.

One of Euripides’s famous plays was called 'The Trojan Women'. It was about the suffering of women who were victims of the war. Euripides had lot of experiences; he had survived the horrors of the Peloponnesian War. Most of his plays were about humans, not gods, and the causes of human misfortune. Based on the research I did this morning, I was excited if I could interview any of them. Luckily, one of my friends was going to interview Aeschylus, and he brought me with him. I asked Aeschylus how did he became such a great playwright, he said to me: “He who learns must suffer. And even in our sleep pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God.” He brought us to look around his house and he shared with us the great plays he had written. He told us most of his plays were related to gods, because he was a religious person, and this type of play is the most important one in Greece. After more questions, we left his house. It was such an honor opportunity to interview with Aeschylus, one of the most famous Athenian playwrights.

Art The Amphipolis Mosaic is finally Finished! -by Emma Xu

The Amphipolis Mosaic is finished! A lot of news reporters are recording this amazing piece of artwork. As a news reporter, I went to see the Amphipolis Mosaic, and I was really excited. The picture is shown below. The floor behind the gate with the caryatids is covered by a mosaic that depicts Hermes leading a chariot driven by Hades who has just abducted Persephone. This is a well known and repeated theme in art, and it is very similar to the abduction of Persephone fresco made for the the royal tombs at Vergina. In this fresco painting, the charioteer is identified as Hades, in the process of kidnapping Persephone to the underworld. Doesn’t this remind you of the story you learned when you were young? Yes, it's about Persephone and Hades, and where the seasons all come from! Persephone was Demeter’s daughter, and Demeter was the goddess of grain, wheat and seasons. Wherever Persephone goes, there will always be flowers on her footsteps. Because of her beauty, Demeter always kept Persephone with her. She was afraid of someone hurting her or taking her away. One day, Hades saw the beautiful woman, Persephone, and kidnapped her. Also, another mosaic was also finished! However, the Kasta tomb mosaic depicts only two horses, as opposed to the four in the Vergina tomb, but variations on a theme are not unusual in mythological depictions.

Picture taken by Emma Xu, Art Gallery, Greece

The artist enhances the story with some simple gestures and lines, which makes it look like Hades and Persephone are real and about to ride out of the artwork! There are three important gestures that we might easily miss are Persephone's left arm and gaze, Hermes' right hand, and two faces that stare at us head-on.!

This action is telling us where they are going and that he is aware we are there. If you look carefully, on the right corner, Persephone's left arm is raised. Is she asking for help? Her head leans back in a sweet expression. But we are not sure who she was communicating with, and this fact makes us aware of a much bigger, invisible and infinite space beyond this mosaic. A lot of news reporters think Persephone was communicating with her mother, Demeter for help, but the painter didn’t say anything. In the Amphipolis tomb mosaic, the eyes gaze back and forth in an energetic exchange that reveals a sense of apprehension and nervousness. Take a look at all the heads in line: one face looks toward our space, while the next looks forward in the mosaic's space, and none of the heads are looking at the same direction

Picture organized by Emma Xu, Greece

Another very important part of this mosaic is on the west end of the fresco. Hermes' arm is pointing forward, with the end of his fingers almost touching the border. At the same time he gazes in our eyes with a mysterious expression.

Overall, the painter didn’t want to explain the mosaic to us, but this just made this mosaic more mysterious and different than others, and what we saw was an amazing piece of artwork!

Athenian Art Contest By: Charlie Morton

Over the past couple of weeks, many people have been talking of wanting to have an art contest in the city of Athens. Finally yesterday, it has been made official and all artists competing and wishing to submit a painting into the contest have one week. There is expected to be over a thousand submissions as everyone is planning on competing, even those who aren't very talented. The reason behind the number of participants is because of the grand prize. Everyone wishing to submit a piece into the contest will have to pay an entry fee of five gold coins. The elders of the city, who are running the contest, are planning that the winner will receive all of the coins collected by the entry fee. Not only will they receive money, but they will be known around the country and their winning painting will be put on public display and is to never be taken down. Appearances are expected by famous painters such as Apollodorus, Aristides of Thebes, Theon of Samos, Pausias, and even the great Agatharchus.

One of the paintings already submitted

Everyone is getting

ready to create their best piece of work for a shot at

the prize. There are many different styles of

paintings that will be seen such as, wars scenes from

actual veterans and spectators, nature and wildlife paintings, and of

course the most popular,

for

some

interesting new style of art and the possibility that this

competition could start something that changes how everyone sees art.

The rules posted around the city of Athens state that all paintings have one week to be completed and submitted, and one person can submit as many paintings as they wish but have to pay five coins for each one. More rules say that the art can be on any surface or object such as pottery, sculptures, pieces of walls, or anything you can find to paint on, for it to be eligible it must use paint and color. Everyone is very excited to see the final works of art and who will win the grand prize. Athens is expected to be very quiet over the next few days as everyone will be focusing on painting. Already ideas are spreading through the city quickly, many paintings are going to represent Greece and their culture while others are going to represent what citizens of Greece think the culture in the future will be like. There will be many different stories of the citizens of Greece represented by all of these paintings.

The paintings inside the palace help describe the creatures that are believed to have lived there. Some creatures that lived there are thought to have swam in indoor pools. The creatures inside are thought to be superior and more intelligent than humans. The detail in the artist’s masterpieces, help prove that these creatures ruled the earth in their time period. The art tells us that these creatures were never conquered and chose to leave their palace and find somewhere else to live. Because of the art inside the ancient palace, tourists from all over the world are coming to Crete just to witness the works of art with their own eyes. Visitors are expected from places as far away as Egypt and China. Some people in Greece are warning others to stay away and that the creatures still live nearby, while others want everyone to come see this amazing discovery. The numbers of visitors are believed to reach in the hundreds in a few weeks. Greece considers this the greatest discovery since the beginning of the world.

Apollodorus Legendary Paintings Many have heard of Apollodorus and the legends of his amazing paintings but no one has ever seen any. Many have reported sighting Apollodorus’ legendary paintings but these reports are not confirmed. Those who claim to have seen one of his paintings say it is like nothing they have seen before but we don’t know if they can be believed. “The paintings he made seemed so real and looked as if you could walk right into it.” This is a statement by a man who has reportedly seen one of these paintings. Many believe and have said that his paintings are so great because of a new technique in art that Apollodorus created called shading. The shading is said to make objects and people in the paintings stand out and look continued to page 8

Not everyone feels the same way about Apollodorus’ paintings, “His paintings are absolutely terrible and someone should search for them and destroy them so others don't have to suffer the pain of seeing them. This is another statement made by a man who also claimed to have seen some of his paintings. No one knows what will happen next and Apollodorus has also been missing for the last few days and no one has heard anything about him. Many believe he was killed while others think he is just hiding until everyone forgets about his paintings. If he is truly just hiding, it could be a long time until he is seen again.

Art ATHENA'S PARTHENON

Here is the statue of Athena and the statue of Zeus side by side.

By Eliza Quinones "I have seen the picture of the gods with my own eyes and it is an image needed to be known by man," says Phidias. But the question runs through our heads, has he really seen the gods?' Three years ago Phidias created the elaborate statue of Zeus sitting down at Olympia. Many say if the statue would have stood up, the roof of the temple would be completely ripped off. The statue was made of ivory and gold. It is crowned with the heroic symbol of an olive wreath. Zeus had gold sandals and a complicated robe of animals and lilies. In the right hand was a statue of the goddess of victory, Nike. In the left-hand it held a spear that was held up by an eagle. The throne that Zeus sits on was made of gold and decorated with many jewels. The statue was perfect and pleasant to the eye. Phidias really captured the essence of Zeus and made it feel to anyone looking up at the statue as if the God himself was right there. The statue of Zeus is only one example that Phidias had to support his view

of the gods. Finally after 15 years of construction the Parthenon is finished and we can see it. The architecture is incredible, but what supports Phidias's vision and really catches the eye when you walk into the building is the 40 ft tall statue of the beautiful goddess, Athena. It is created with ivory and gold weighing about 2,400 lb. Athena has a helmet that is carefully designed with the mighty Sphinx in the middle and two griffins on the sides. In her right hand she holds the goddess of victory, Nike and in her left a spear. She has a mesmerizing, carefully designed tunic that reaches down to her feet with medusa’s head on her chest. At the bottom of the tunic is a shield that has a serpent on it. Just like the statue of Zeus, the statue of a Athena shows the beauty of the goddess in a manner that makes mortals feel as if she is here on earth. This feeling that Phidias has given us in that his sculptures truly support his claim of seeing the gods. But, the critics have another idea. Looking at both the sculptures they were able to figure out many similarities. The crowns both used on the statues mean something of honor; they both hold in their right hand the goddess of victory, and in their left a weapon supported by some animal. Many of the critics say that because of such a success with Zeus, Phidias just decided to copy that one in Athena. They say he made up the story of seeing the gods to make his statues have more life, more mystery, and more fame. But if Phidias made the story up, where did he get all of his ideas for creating the mesmerizing, life like statues? Does he see the gods? Or does he see fame? Which side do you think?

Art Business or attention?  By Eliza Quinones

We all know about the amazing

sculpture, The Victorious Youth, made by Alexander the Great's trusty personal sculptor, Lysippos. Well, he was recently called back to the palace to do a sculpture of Alexander's beautiful wife, Roxana, but sources say there's another side to the story. Alexander now has three wives since he remarried only last year, so Roxana has lost a lot of attention. Many think the reason she invited Lysippos to sculpt her body was so her husband would get jealous or disturbed at the time Lysippos was spending with her. We actually got the chance to speak with Lysippos to see his side of the story. "She brought me up to her bedroom and there we did the sculpting. She would always try to make noise or do something to get the

attention of a person walking by, so they would probably alert Alexander. I don't really know. The many times I went there to sculpt Roxana I was only stopped by the king once, and he just wanted to make sure I felt at home in his castle. I guess you could say I was being used for attention, but from what I saw, Alexander didn't really care," He said. Roxana tried for weeks with Lysippos, but things didn't really go as she planned. Alexander ended up dying in Babylon, which left Roxana with his other two widows. Mysteriously, four days after Alexander’s death, both of his widows died. No one knows the cause. Rumors have been spreading that Roxana killed them to keep from having competition to the throne. However we have to find more information because rumors are rumors and they are not evidence of what's true.

The Artemision Bronze has just been finished and on display. A very nice sculpture made by a mysterious new artist. The artist gave the sculpture nice muscle tone and a position as if he were throwing some object. Come down and take a look for yourself and as soon as you have, help us decide what the sculpture is about. We are not quite sure who it represents and we're dying to decide. Since we don't know the artist, we can't ask what he intended to create. It could either be the mighty Poseidon or the powerful Zeus. We'll be tallying up the answers in the Quick foto of the statue.

Art Critics By Eliza Quinones

Myron's Discobolus has just recently come out and I, Eliza Quinones, had the pleasure of being the first to

critique the sculpture. First of all, the sculpture is very accurate when

thinking of the Olympics. The man is

nude, like all athletes, and throwing a discus which is one of the Olympic

events. Second, when looking at the position the body is in, it seems

inhuman and very uncomfortable. At the same time, everything is

positioned in a way to give the

sculpture harmony and balance. The third and last thing I would add

about this sculpture is the interesting expression on his face. He looks sort of worried like he's not in the right position. He feels something is

wrong, almost as if he's not going to throw perfectly, or as if he's

extremely preoccupied. Overall, the sculpture brings out interesting and different emotions to a variety of

viewers. This sculpture could inflict

other opinions, but I say it's a three star sculpture. Well done!

Art Belly Amphora Pottery Author: Brandon LaBombard

A few days ago, I went to visit my good friend Andokides a potter, and a student of Exekias who is very skilled in the arts. While I visited him he showed me two of his most favorite Belly Amphora pieces that he’d made with the black-figure style of painting on it. The vase was beautiful; it was black and had two red handles that were decorated with a black vine with leaves. The vase was about 28 or 30 daktylos tall and had a round base that sported a red triangular pattern, as well as a large neck and rim. On either side of the vase were two beautiful paintings of Herakles being waited on whilst lying down. One side was in a

Picture of Hoplite Pottery taken by Brandon LaBombard, Greece

The second piece also had a black base coat and was in the red-figure style but had more of a white hue than the other piece he showed me. The painting showed two hoplites in battle with Athena and Hermes beside them. The hoplite on the left wore both a tunic and leggings and shinguards all with swirl and triangle designs. He wore a pleated skirt with a cross design and a striped border, and a helmet sporting two snake heads with bristles on them. The hoplite on the right wore a tunic with zigzag and stripe-esk designs, shinguards with a swirl design. He wore a pleated skirt with dots, and wore a helmet that sported a dog with it’s tail as the bristles. Both of the two hoplites held a spear and a shield, the man on the left had a Spartan-like shield and the man on the right had a circular shield with a scorpion emblem. Athena, on the left, was dressed elegantly with a dress that had various intricate designs embroidered on it. The goddess had two snakes around her neck and also wore a helmet that also had many intricate designs and tall

black-figure style, meaning the people were painted in black, and the opposing side was in the red-figure style where, if you couldn’t guess, they were painted in red. On a closer inspection of the red-figured side, Herakles held a chalice and wore a spotted toga and a crown of leaves upon his head. Unshaven Herakles laid on a marble podium and was cushioned by a striped pillow. Beside him sat a table with food and cutlery on it, and to his right was a tree. At the other end of the podium was a servant who wore a headpiece and a checkered pattern who was tending to the tree.

and long bristles. Hermes, on the right, wore only a tunic and a cap. The tunic’s designs were similar to Athena’s dress and his cap was plain and simple. The two vases were in the same style and shape black/red figure style and both were elegant and beautiful. The two vases could have only been made by Andokides because he was Exekias’ best and most favorite of all and any of his students. Overall both of the vases were exquisite, so I asked him if he was going to sell them and he told me that if he were to sell them, he’d have sell them for 500 gold pieces each because they were his most favorite pieces that he had ever made.

Art Terraccotta Sculpture Author: Brandon LaBombard

After visiting Andokides for a good while, we went to the temple of Zeus in Olympia and while we were there, a sculpture caught my eye. It was a skillfully crafted, multi-figured, terracotta statue of Zeus taking the Trojan hero Ganymede to Mount Olympus, but it was unusually shorter than others because the figures are less than life sized but considerably larger than other terracotta statues. This is the reason I was so intrigued by it. The stone that the bodies comprised of had a yellow sort of hue to it, and the stone that made Zeus’ robes had more of a red tint. Zeus stood upon a pediment like plinth. His face was very well sculpted, the anatomy of it was correct and his facial hair was on point. The structure of the rest of his body was expertly crafted, having very realistic muscles. Zeus wore a crown of leaves on his head and a robe of which was draped around his waist and left shoulder, only covering his left arm and waist down. The robe had great detail with the ruffles and in the folds. The god wielded a walking stick in his left hand and carried Ganymede in the other. Ganymede wore a nothing but a wreath on his crown and held a rooster in his left hand. He had moderately long curled hair in the front and on the sides.

Lifestyle: Celebrity News The Olympics By Andrew Wang

After another four years, the Olympics are coming again. This year, we predict that more than 20,000 people will go to Olympia to watch the Olympic games. As the Olympics this year, there will be more than 10 different sports to compete in, including stade, diaulos, hoplitodromos, boxing ,wrestling, discus, pankration and horse-racing. The whole event will run for five days and will begin tomorrow. Here is the schedule for the Olympics.

Peadar is another athlete in pankration, he is very young and strong. Unlike Ajax, this is his first year competing in the Olympics. Last year, Peadar attended a pankration competition in Sparta and won the first place, so many people believe that Peadar will also do very well in the Olympics. In the interview, Peadar wasp actually quite shy, he told us that he doesn’t expect to win first place in the Olympics, he just wants to try his best and learn from the other players. Hartman is a runner and will attend both stade and diaulos. This is his second time attending the Olympics, last time, he got second place in stade and third place in diaulos. During the interview, he told the reporter that he is very excited and nervous now, he hopes that after four years of practicing, he can finally win the olive wreath.

Before the Olympics started, we sent our best reporter Andreas to Olympia, and he interviewed several athletes about how they are feeling about the upcoming competitions.

Ajax is one of the best pankration players, and his father was a wrestler. Ajax has won the pankration in last Olympics, can he win again this year? In the interview, Ajax said that during the last four years, he has improved a lot in his boxing skills, but last year, in a practice, he broke his wrist, and this might affect his skills.

These three athletes are all very talented and they trained really hard for the Olympic. How will they do in the competitions? We will see after several days. From our reporter, we noticed that Olympia is very busy now, people from all over the Greece traveled to Olympia for the games. Hotels in Olympia are twice the price they used be. If you are traveling to Olympia these days, we recommend you to stay at the outside of the city, so you can avoid the crowded downtown and enjoy the beautiful view of the beach and sea.

This is the news from the Olympics, we will keep following the events these days

Next week, the most important festival in Greece is going to take place. The Panathenaea has been held for over two hundred years, and it is the birthday of Athena, the goddess of wisdom. The whole event will run for eight days and people in Greece will all celebrate this great festival. The first Panathenaea has held 566 BC and was modeled on the Olympic Games. The biggest different of the Panathenaea was that it does not only included sports events, but also many other events, including music and poetry.

The Panathenaea This year, the ceremony will be as before. Women from Athens will make a special robe called Peplos for the statue of Athena. The robe will be carried to the Parthenon during the Panathenaea. There will also be a large sacrifice to Athena. A hundred oxen will be sacrificed, and the meat will be used in a huge banquet on the final night of the festival. The game will also be a focal point of the festival. The sports that are competing in during the festival will be very similar to the Olympic games, and the victors of the game will receive onehundred and forty Panathenaic amphora full of olive oil.

By Andrew Wang

On the first day, a musical and a poetry competition are going to take place, and on the second day, there will be some games for boys who are not yet adults. From day three to day seven, different kinds of sports will be competing in, and the last day will be awarding and celebration. Are you excited about the upcoming festival? Lifestyle: Food Reviews My name is Alika . My parents are Ambrosine and Aquarius. We are from a beautiful place called Athens. I was raised to love food. Every day my parents made the best lentils and olives. Ever since I moved out I have been a food critic. They would be proud as they were both food critics themselves. I wish I could tell them but they have both sadly passed away.

Inferior Lentils at Café Ω By: Kurtis Grover

I just got back from a restaurant called Café Ω. Let me tell you, their lentils are awful. The restaurant is located on the coast of Athens. This place is a small cafe. The only thing that I don't like about it are the Lentils. That is the only thing bad about it. The apples were really good, their Olives were amazing and their goat cheese was exquisite. When I got to Café Ω, I first tried their food and then I approached the owner Nicanor. I asked him why he thought that his restaurant was better than all of the other restaurants in the area. He said “ My restaurant is better than all of the local restaurants because our Lentils are imported from a long way away in Egypt. We get a special order from a farmer who gives us a special discount on all of his produce.”

Lifestyle: Food Delightful Figs at Archimedes Diner By: Kurtis Grover Then next place that I went to was called Archimedes’ Diner. This is located in Sparta and is a very hard place to get into. The only reason I was allowed in was because I knew the owner. He told me to try their figs. All I have to say is you really need to get to this place because it is by far the best restaurant in all of Greece. They are very nice and respectful just as long as you are nice and respectful to them. At Archimedes’ Diner I found the head chef. His name is also Alika. After I finished eating my meal I approached him and asked him where he

got his figs from because I thought that they would have to be imported from a very long ways away to be that good. He said, “We actually get them from our own farm that we have in our back yard. Other people use

One, their food better be good, and two, why would anyone name a place after a three headed dog. I asked him this and he said “Well a lot of people wonder about the name and I always say I named it after a three headed dog because that was alway my favorite story as a child. As for the food

Lifestyle: Food Myron's Marketplace By: Kurtis Grover Next up was a shop called Myrons. Normally I don't go to a market place for amazing food but when I heard about this place, I had to go. Myron's is known for their goat cheese and the best tasting grapes in all of Greece. This place is known all threw Greece. I was a little unsure about what to expect when I visited Myron's shop because normally I only go to restaurants to do my reviews. When I heard everyone talking about this place I had to go see what this place was. I had heard people saying that their goat cheese was the best thing that they had ever tasted, I had to try it. When I got to the market place I couldn't find it because I still thought that I would be looking for a restaurant. I had to ask someone where it was. When I finally found it I tried their goat cheese and their grapes and it turns out that they really do have the best cheese and grapes in Greece. I asked Myron why his cheese I better than any other I had ever tried. He said “My cheese is better because I let mine age a little while before I put it out for sale so that it tastes a little better and so that it is even a little crumbly.

Greece. Before I tell you what she told me, I was so shocked about the lowness of women. She started off by telling me their main job, which was to raise their boys strong and healthy so that would be ready and able to fight in the war. She told me her life was boring because she was completing the same tasks over and over again, “I wish I knew a life other than work” Althea pleaded to me. Women were not even allowed to vote or have any say in politics. Men ruled their life from the day they were born to the day they died. Along with raising her son, Alex, she was responsible for making herself, her husband, and her two kids articles of clothing. She sewed day in and day out. A plus side to the clothing was that they mostly wore the same thing so it was not like they had to make twenty articles of clothing for each family member. Depending on how her husband treated her she would get fancier clothes. When Althea woke up she would put on a tunic and a cloak made of wool. She explained her tunic as a heavy dress and her cloak as a man killer because she was not allowed to show her shoulders. Men and women generally wore the same thing so depending on the size of man or a women they could share clothing. When her husband

We got talking about her and us both being girls and we shed some tears. Althea explained to me, “Alex will get a good education with real teachers being taught complex topics where I will have to teach Wen how to read and write by myself, right there at our kitchen table.” That got both of us crying because we were both girls and would like to see girls get farther in life, but there was nothing we could do about it other than work hard and show the men we could do it. The last thing Althea told before before she started dinner was that she prays to the gods every night before she lays down to sleep. She told me that she is selfish when she prays, but that she also prays for the wounded. She said her selfishness is from the fact she is a girl. She wants women to have a bigger say in life. Althea said, “I am very thankful for the gods, especially the goddesses because even men are under their rule. I just wish we had a bigger say here on earth.” I thanked her for her time and she thanked me for giving her the time.

Hairstyles Next on the list is 4 different ways women can do their hair!

This hairstyle is breathtaking, What you need is a hairband, either silver or gold depending on the color of your hair. First you want to pull all your hair back, then fold it up and the fold it once more down. Hold your hair with one hand and put the hair band in the top of your forehead, then pull it back and place it in all the foldings. Then make it look kind of messy by giving your hair a small shake and there you go. If you followed all the steps correctly you should look beautiful like the painting to the right .

Lifestyle: Fashion Our second hairstyle on the list is a little bit more complicated than the one before but still looks amazing on everyone! Ok ladies, first you need two hair bands, and unfortunately this hairstyle can only be used with some short to medium length hair, otherwise it won't look too good. Alright first, pull all your hair back then place one of the hair bands at two daktylos from your forehead. Then place the second hairband two daktylos from the first hairband, then in between the headband you want to pull your hair a little bit to

create a wave with your hair. If you get lost, look at the painting above for guidance. Once you're done, you will look godlike and gorgeous.

This hairstyle only applies to women with curly hair, so if you don't have curly hair you can give it a shot, but we make no promises. To begin this is really simple. You need a tiara and that's it. You pull all your hair back some you will go off to the right side and the rest will go to the left look at the picture for guidance. Then you want to place the tiara one daktylo from your forehead, and that it! Now you can attract everyone's looks and envy.

Model Third Hair Style

Out of all the hairstyles this is the most complex one. You will need 4 pins and someone to help you unless you are really agile with your hands. Lets get to it! First you want to braid all of the hair behind your neck into two different braids. Then you want to leave your hair on your forehead so that it covers it (if it's to long pull it back). Wrap braids around your head and pin them to the back of your neck (not to your neck to the hair behind your neck!). Then just use pins to leave them in place. It might take you a couple tries at first but then you get the hang of it and it will look even better. Model Fourth Hair Style

Advice columns straight from yours truly, Oracle of Greece By: Peyton Spurr

Dear Oracle of Greece, What if I'm being recruited to go to the army but I am not enthused about going? -ANXIOUS ALEC Hello ANXIOUS ALEC. You are being recruited, but you don't want to go. Well, this isn't what you want to hear, but you have to serve in war if you are recruited. Lucky for you, you won't actually have to fight in battles until you have kids, but other than that there is no way out. Sometimes the Gods present you with challenges and when you accept the challenges and you follow through with them, they will reward you. They put this challenge of war in your life, not only Oracle symbol because they need men to fight, but because they believe in you and all your abilities. You need to go into the war with an open mind. You may not like it but you need to work hard and work with your other comrades to win the war. Working together will bring victory. There is no “I in team. Like I said, there is no getting out of going to war so you need to grow up and go to war and fight for your country and your family and your homeland. Good luck with everything! -Oracle of Greece Dear Oracle of Greece, How do I inform my son his father passed away in the Persian War? - WORRIED MOTHER Hello WORRIED MOTHER. Firstly, I am very sorry for your loss and I hope all is well. Now back to your question. I believe it all depends on how old your son is. If your son is very little 2-3 years or younger, I would leave it alone until he is older. If you son is between the ages of 4-9, I would tell white lies and hint that his father is gone, but they won't understand the real meaning of gone until they are older. Any older than 9, I would sit them down when you think the time is right for them to know, that daddy was a man who was committed to what he loved and he would do anything to achieve his goals. Tragedies strike that you can't do anything about. This is very unfortunate but at least he was risking his life for something very important. Best of luck and come back with anymore concerns! - Oracle of Greece Continues on page 10

Dear Oracle of Greece, I am 18 years old and I love to run. How can I join the olympics? - ATHLETIC ALEXANDRA Hello ATHLETIC ALEXANDRA. To join the olympics you need to make sure you are mentally and emotionally ready and physically strong enough. Mentally and emotionally, the pressure to please your family and city will have on you to be the best athlete out there could really mess with your head. If you feel you are ready and you feel like that won't bother you, then you're ready to move on to your physical check. All the men there will have trained for months and months. The last thing you want is to get there and think to yourself you should have trained harder. Being number one requires training as if you are last. With that mentality, you will be fantastic and a great competitor. Once you feel your training is done, even though your training never stops, you should get in touch with the coordinators of the events! I am sure they would love to have someone like you. If you end up going, please write back and tell me how you did! Good luck! - Oracle of Greece

Dear Oracle of Greece, I am desperate because the boy of my dreams won't even acknowledge me. Would you please talk to Goddess Aphrodite and ask her how to make a boy like you? OBSESSIVE OCTAVIA Hello OBSESSIVE OCTAVIA. Before I even asked Aphrodite about her thoughts, like you asked me to, I thought to myself, if the boy of your dreams doesn't like you for who you are, you need to find a new boy of your dreams. He may be the most handsome man you have ever laid eyes on but it is all about the beauty on the inside. I am sure you are a beautiful girl inside and out and you should only let guys in your life that see both sides of you. I am guessing you are a teenager and most guys are gross and just want girls for sexual reasons, but there comes a time where the right man walks in. Unfortunately, not every woman is as lucky as some people but they can only pray to the gods. You may have heard this one million times, but believe me on this one, many men will walk in your life. Most of temporarily but some will stay for a while until you wish they would leave. Among those men you will find a king and it will be love. You will get this rush of emotions like you've never gotten before and that's when you will know it is the one. The bottom line is do not change yourself for anyone and live your life to the fullest because you have so much life ahead of you! - Oracle of Greece

Editorials and Opinions World news Smoke was seen over the city of Athens this morning. It looks like the Persians have burned the city to the ground. Xerxes has fulfilled his father's destiny. His father tried to burn the city to the ground ten years ago at the battle of Marathon. The Persian army had the Athenian's outnumbered by 20,000 and had superior soldiers, like Cavalry and experienced Archers, while Athens barely had an army. Due to superior weapons like the Dory, Hoplite shield and tactics like the Phalanx the Athenian army won. A few days ago the Persian army has landed near the pass of Thermopylae . The Persian army led by Xerxes came back with tens of thousands of troops. The Greek city states had a meeting about what they need to do. The king of Sparta, Leonidas, and Pericles, the king of Athens were the brains of the operation. Leonidas took his best soldiers of Sparta the famous 300 to protect the pass, while Pericles protected his flank. Pericles took Athens newly made navy into battle and protect the bay of Salamis. We all know that Salamis was a success. Just like Marathon the Persian army outnumbered the Athenians. Pericles made a plan to defeat the Persian invaders. He fought the Persians around late afternoon which made the battle quick due to the night. According to

one of the soldiers, the Athenians ships sunk the Persian ship with no problem, due to the superior battering rams the Athenians had. The Persian army lost tons of supplies and men which made the Persians frontline fall back, helping Leonidas’ 300. The battle of Thermopylae was a success in the beginning. The Spartan 300 were holding off the Persian army with ease. It had been said they have killed thousands of Persians while we have only sustained few casualties. The battle formation of the Phalanx was a savior once again. No one figured out how to break this impenetrable wall of bronze. The Greeks’ size had helped. The Persians overwhelming numbers were useless due to the small space of the pass. Somehow the Persians found a road that led behind the Spartans. The next morning they were squished between thousands of Persian barbarians. It was a shame that we lost Leonidas army . Leonidas was a great father , husband, leader and most of all, a great Spartan. The people of Athens left early yesterday morning because they knew the city was going to be sacked. Only a few priests stayed behind praying to the goddess Athena to strike them down as they ransacked the city. The beautiful marble sculptures of gods and goddess, heroes and

kings have been smashed and are unrecognizable. The places where the townspeople grew up and have lived all their lives have been burned to ash. The stores where merchants ran the businesses have been ransacked for their goods and the worst of all The Parthenon, the temple of Athena has been destroyed. Athena's beautiful golden statues have been disgraced, the priest has been killed and the Parthians offerings have been taken. It is a horrific sight to see all this knowledge wasted. It brings tears to my eyes to see this beautiful city be destroyed all under one night. I cannot believe the thousands of hours it took to build and make a civilization could be destroyed so quickly. Two days ago I woke up to see the sun glinting over the city. The sun was perfectly placed, as if it was dragged by the sun god Apollo himself, but now all I see is death and destruction. The streets, the homes, the temples are now all gone, destroyed. I can't tell you about the pain I feel or the anger I have. My friends and family have no homes, the children cannot play. All they can do now is weep, and pray to the goddess Athena that one day their city can be as glorious as it once was. -Reported by Vedant Divekar

Editorials and Opinions Is Feminism Dead In Ancient Greece? By Leah Bonis As Greeks many of us recognize the importance of women in both the domestic and political world. However feminism has not been a popular source of discussion recently in the news. Many people have gone so far as to wonder if feminism and equality are basic human rights or just opinions of individuals. In an attempt to shed some light on these issues I turned to Aristophanes, a long standing supporter of feminism. During a meeting over lunch we discussed the importance of feminism and his argument against inequality. One quote from our meeting really resonated with me. Directly after a spirited conversation about Andromeda's role in the story of Perseus and Andromeda he fell silent. After what seemed like hours he glanced up from the small book he

To actually accomplish something we must stand and fight. carried with him. "The War shall be women's business." He spoke quietly, before placing a couple drachmas on the table and departing. I was stunned into silence for a moment. I did not understand this quote. Was he saying that he was done fighting for women or was he actually implying that women are strong enough to fight this war themselves. Eight days after our meeting as I was putting the finishing touches on this article I uncovered what he meant. After our enlightening conversation I decided that I needed to thoroughly rewatch his play 'Lysistrata', a story. I hadn't experienced it since I was about sixteen. That's when I found

the words he had spoke at that meeting. A quote from the Magistrate that reads as follows. "May I die a death ere I obey one who wears a veil!" Lysistrata, a strong and independent female lead, strikes back with this memorable quote "If that's all that troubles you, here take my veil, wrap it round your head, and hold your tongue. Then take this basket; put on a girdle, card wool, munch beans. The War shall be women's business. That is when I understood what he meant. In a way he was empowering not just me, but every woman who was to read what I would write. Equality will not just come overnight. It will not just come to us by sitting idly to the side. To actually accomplish something we must stand and fight. Not just as women (continued on page 3.)

Editorials and Opinions Is Feminism Dead In Ancient Greece? (cont.) Are Kapeleion's Being Shut Down

Are Kapeleion's Being Shut Down? By Leah Bonis Who doesn't love going out to Kapelion's? Especially after long days of work it's a fun and social place to unwind with friends. However there are rumors floating around Athens that they will be shutting down all Kapeleion's in the city state, perhaps even going as far as to put a ban on alcohol consumption for recreational purposes altogether. Naturally many Athenians are angered by this. Kapelion's are a large part of the social aspect of life in Athens. A group of about 250 men and women have even written a petition and presented it to the government in a desperate attempt to stop them from passing the ban. The court’s decision will be released to the public on Saturday. Until then enjoy your local Kapeleion while you can.

Economy (cont.) By Preston Fultz

Recently the value of the silver drachma has gone down in Greece. In Athens a chicken was less than one drachma but now it's four. In other city states like Crete and Ionia I have heard insane prices, this is due to the inflation that Athens began. The city state of Athens has found a new silver deposit and is putting it all into silver drachmas. This is raising the prices for simple needs like bread, meat and wine. In my opinion, this was a mistake for Athens to do that. In the long run it would only hurt them more and is not helping other city states. This was a pretty selfish move and it's not helping the peasants.

MYRON AWARDS ATHENA WITH A BRONZE STATUE Myron makes another great piece of art. This was made especially for Athena. He says that he’ll give it to her as a token of appreciation for her works. He unveiled it yesterday. It is a wonderful statue of her made out of bronze. It is well sculpted and placed on a bronze stand. I was there to watch the unveiling. There were a couple of thousand onlookers, who were wowed by his wonderful piece of art. In my opinion, he has put a lot of hard work in it and it has paid off for him. I am very sure that Goddess Athena will appreciate this artwork. POLYKLEITOS’ THEATRE, A NEW START TO THEATRE? Polykleitos the Younger comes up with a groundbreaking plan for a theatre to house thousands in Epidaurus. He has come up with a blueprint that looks very advanced. It is said to have approximately 30-35 rows.

It may house up to 1000 people at a time. It is said to take 10 years or more to be a completed architectural structure. In my opinion, this gives theatre a whole new look in the world. Once completed this would be the epitome of theatre and this would house all of the best actors in Greece. After asking a few people present at the scene; a male who wanted to remain unnamed said, “This is great for our city (Epidaurus), now we will be much better known and our city’s name would be on the theatre industry’s lips.” An architect present at the scene said, “Polykleitos has one of the best architectural minds. This could be one of the greatest architectural feats ever to have graced Greece.” In between of all of the positive comments, there were a few negative ones too. One unnamed woman of Athens had to say, “This theatre is just a waste of space and money. We could spend it more constructively like more schools or cheaper school.” This could be out of no interest in theatre or out of pure intention. Nonetheless, the majority of people say that it is a great idea that is put forth.

NEW EVENTS IN THE OLYMPICS, GETS INTEREST BACK TO IT. The most recent Olympics was held in 400 B.C. It was held at Olympia. It was won by Konstantinos Papastathopoulos. He won the pentathlon, the individual discus, javelin and weightlifting. There were 3 new events at this Olympics. The 800-meter dash, 2 vs. 2 wrestling and the iron man. The iron man was the highlight of the Olympics. It was an event, where the athletes ran, swam and then rode a horse all at once and a supreme athlete won. This was won by Manos Samaras. In my opinion, the new events spark the rise of sports in Greece and that all the Greeks were happy to see changes in the events and a new beginning to an event that was losing importance. The judging board made sure there was no cheating and that all sports were played in all fairness. This was another new addition to make the Olympics better. Many people expressed that they were happier with these decisions. 4

the creation of the olive tree. It presented peace and prosperity on earth. People and Cecrope are really impressed by the gift from Athena and decided to name the city after her. So this way, Athena became the protector of the city. Poseidon was angry, so he cursed the city never have enough water. The curse brings the city many problems, it is a major problem for Greek even at present days. One of Poseidon’s greatest enemy is Odysseus, king of Ithaca. He is a great hero

Ever since Zeus became the king of Gods, the drama that happens in immortal’s world has never stopped. They had human emotions but they lived forever. They have flaws but great powers. The main reason that caused some unhappy things to happen is Hera’s jealousy, Zeus’s desire, and Poseidon’s anger. Is there anyway that the immortals can stop making the drama happen?

Solution for the Dramas Zeus and Hera Zeus was the king of gods and considered as the master of the universe. Although he is immortal, there is no denying that he often engaged in petty acts of cruelty on mortals, as well as heroes and other gods. Zeus was also famous because his affairs with many women, especially mortals. Europa, Io, Semel, and many more women were all his lovers, which brings Hera’s attention and jealousy. She can't do anything to her husband, so she ends up spreading all her anger on the mortals he slept with. She punishes them in cruel ways.

The 12 gods of Olympians. They control the universe with great powers.

Poseidon Except the drama that Zeus and Hera created, Poseidon’s bad personality was also one of the reason. After the king of Athens, Cecrops made the announcement about choosing a patron deity, many of the Olympian gods showed their interests about the patronage, especially Poseidon, the God of seas and the goddess of wisdom, Athena. The competitive contend lasts a long time and finally, Cecrops decides to choose the winner by the gift they offer to Athens. Poseidon struck the earth powerfully and created a well with streaming water shot forth, but water immediately turned salty and very useful for the city, Athena, however, won people’s heart with

It would not be an easy thing to stop all of the whole Olympian’s drama in a short time. As what mortals said “This is going to be a long journey to fight. It's not only about the gods but also, the rights of humans, because we have all paid the prices for the immature behavior gods did. It's time for them to sit down and think about how to solve these serious problems.” The fixing needs to start from Zeus because he is the leader and the one who start this mess. First, all the affairs should stop. As the master of the universe, he needs to be a great example for everyone. Hera also needs to control her jealousy and starts to understand her husband. They should not let their personal life affects the whole world anymore.

Editorials and Opinions Introduction The typical newest style for fashion is usually customarily homemade out of various lengths of rectangular linen or wool fabric with little cutting or sewing. As time passed, people are starting to have the argument about the fashion style. Many of them think it is time for a revolution because the clothes present an important part of the culture and society.

This is a picture of Ancient Greek women try on their clothes.

Second Issue Also, the long robes are hard for people to move around. Farmers and workers are important characters of the society, they are the main force of Greece’s economics. The long rope can bring them many troubles while they are working. So the designers make the style of the garment depending on who was wearing it and the job they had. Personally, I really appreciate this idea just like anyone else who used to have the struggles with their outfits. As a journalist, it was really hard for me to do interviews with the loose fabric. Now, the new clothes are shorter than

First Issue The clothes are too simple. They are the same piece of homespun fabric that was used as a type of garment or blanket. The garments they wore were made for function, they were very simple. However, women should have better styles and decorations on their clothes than just a simple robe. Although the fabrics are decorated with beautiful patterns and designs, but women in Greece should have more opportunities and rights to show their beauty.

Royalty's clothes are usually made with better materials and with lots of jewelry.

Winter Clothes Materials When cold weathers come, Greeks wear a cloak over their tunics for warmth, known as himation. Greek designers should find better materials to make covers instead of wools. First, the numbers of sheep are limited. Only royalties have the ability to afford them for winter. More people are still suffering in cold winds. There are many other kinds of materials people can use such as feathers, other animal furs or thicker fibers.

Accessories For both men and women, they typically wore sandals, slippers, and soft shoes. However, when winter comes, those shoes can no longer protect people’s feet. Also, when people are at home they usually went barefoot. This can be really dangerous because some broken pieces can cause the feet to bleed and the floor is really unclean with all the dust. So what designers should do next is design a kind of indoor shoes that is easy to take off and comfortable to wear. People really appreciate the jewelry they have these days. Ornamentation in the form of jewelry, elaborate hairstyles and makeup was common for women. The reason that make them so popular is many of them are made of natural materials like seashells and stones. Small gold ornaments are also what rich people prefer. “We like the jewelry because the materials are really easy to find, and with just some simple decorations, they would be a work of art. The help us show the beauties we have in a simple and fast way.” A Greek woman said. 6

Is Helen Pregnant? Stories have recently surfaced of Helen and Paris at the Gates of Troy. Helen sporting a significantly larger stomach than last time she was seen. Could this be a baby bump? If so who is the father? Is it her new husband Paris or do we have a scandal on our hands? We now turn to our faithful readers for their opinions on the matter.

“Personally I think that Helen is simply gaining weight. She has been far too active for a pregnant woman. From her participation in the local celebrations as an representative of Troy to the many feasts surrounding the Panhellenic Festivals she is most definitely not pregnant.” - Desma, 23, Corinth

“There is no way Helen is not pregnant. Since the wedding she and Paris have been especially affectionate in public. I can't even begin to imagine their private life. They both seem incredibly happy and I wish them luck with both the pregnancy and their future together.” - Xene, 19, Ionia “I definitely agree that Helen is pregnant but not with Paris’s baby. I strongly believe that we have a scandal on our hands! My theory is that the baby is in fact Hector’s. It can't be coincidence that Achilles killed Hector mere hours after the rumors of Paris and Helen were released to the public. Call me crazy but I do not believe Helen has been faithful to Paris.” Leto, 45, Athens

(cont. from pg 7) Zeus is an incredible candidate for hottest Greek of the year. From his timeless good looks to his lightning bolts, which are sure to cause sparks whenever, he is definitely willing to be your king for eternity. Can you guess who the next candidate is? He's known to play the field. Multiple fields to be exact including Mathematics, Physics, Engineering and many more. Any ideas? If you guessed Archimedes you'd be right. Living proof that things just get better with age.

Odysseus is first and foremost a family man. However he is also a war hero and the king of Ithaca. What queen doesn't want a king of her own? While I can't guarantee that he won't leave you to sleep with a goddess I can promise he'll come home eventually.

Narcissus is famous for his devilishly good looks and dashing boyish grin. The only problem is that this perfect smile is generally directed at himself, or his reflection to be exact. However his lack of brains, personality, and basically any defining characteristics is made up for by his perfectly tanned features.

Ajax is not the brightest of the bunch, however he makes up for it with his incredible physique. Who has room for brains with all that brawn? While he may not be able to complete crossword puzzles with you on Sunday morning he will have absolutely no problem helping you move heavy objects. You can't win ‘em all ladies.

Paris is the ultimate romantic. While he may not be single, his dedication to Helen is swoon worthy. He risked everything he had for true love. If that's not boyfriend goals I don't know what is. Some heroes who are nominated.

Editorials and Opinions Ask the editor - Vedant Divekar

Question 1- What do you think of Euclid findings in Geometry? Dear Reader, To many his findings are unknown and go over their heads, but for a few these are understandable. He said that he wants to simplify math as much as he can for everyone. As for what I understand, these math findings are making it easier for me. While my son says that school is easier now as these findings are being introduced in his classes. And I too see it as he comes back with better scores on his tests. Even though these findings are not relatively new, they've been introduced in schools about a year ago. Question 2- What are your opinions on the construction of the Parthenon?

Dear Reader, This is a hard question to ask as it is still a work in progress. But of what is done already and what the blueprint looked like I feel it is coming together particularly well. The columns which are now already built are looking wonderful and the builders are doing an amazing job at it. I feel at this rate they should be done soon enough. Furthermore, the King said yesterday, “I really like what is happening in the process of building the Parthenon.” If the King’s approval doesn’t tell you enough, then what does? Question 3- Do you feel the Olympics are getting too repetitive and boring? Dear Reader, Many may say that the Olympics are dying in interest. The statistics show itself that

the Olympics’ audiences are gradually getting lower. The previous Olympics had 24,000 people fewer that attended the events than the one before that. But it is rumored that there are many more events to be added to get the interests high in the Olympics. At least 5 events are rumored to be added to the next Olympics in 400 B.C. In my opinion the Olympics do need a boost in events to attract more people in. The Olympics is the best sports event in Greece. Eventually the audiences will return but additional events would be needed as the same events could get very boring. Question 4- Do you think Sparta and Athens will ally against the Persians? Dear Reader,

The thought of this itself would frighten any Greek to think about. 2 city-states that have been at war and are always unhappy with each other allying up would be very close to impossible. Not ruling the chances of it out, this would be a step forward for Greece and may inspire the whole of Greece to come together and fight against the mighty Persians. To defeat them, we would need millions of soldiers and a lot of food and money. Greek city-states on themselves cannot defeat the Persians. Instead they would be humiliated. There has to be a call to action for all the Greek city-states to come together for a massive fight.

Editorials and Opinions A Review of Oedipus Rex By: Jack

Is Ostracizing a just thing to do? And who is better: Kings, or the People? By: Jack Donahue

Donahue A couple days ago I watched a live performance of Oedipus Rex at the Theatre of Dionysus in Athens. Oedipus Rex is a tragic story about Oedipus finding out that he killed his father and is the problem to a plague that has come to Thebes. It was the first time I’ve ever heard of the story so my reactions were genuine. I did however see the first part of the play, the Theban Myth. This story tells us the backstory of Oedipus. I feel like watching the Theban Myth first before seeing Oedipus Rex is a must! Seeing the Theban Myth lets you know that Oedipus killed his father, and knowing this information filled me with a little bit more excitement, waiting for Oedipus to find out the dark secret, which is a plus on Sophocles’s part! But if you don’t watch it first, you will be a bit confused on who Oedipus is, which can be a bit awkward at points. I also loved the ending, I don’t want to spoil it, but it is an action that stands with Oedipus’s standing on being controlled by the gods, and it will shock you! The chorus in this play wasn’t really needed, but was a nice touch. Overall Oedipus Rex was a wonderful story about a hero that doesn’t want to follow the gods, and is willing to do anything to make sure that happens. I give Oedipus Rex an 8.5/10

The Theatre of Dionysus

If you don’t know, ostracizing is when if a ton of people want a political figure out of office, then a vote is held, and if the amount votes goes towards the removal of the politic, then that guy not only gets kicked out of office, but they also kick the same guy out of the town for a long period of time. Now I honestly think that this an awful thing to do, and it isn’t just in any way. So first we have the fact that if a politician held different beliefs than you, it doesn’t mean you can just go ahead and kick him out. That’s another thing, why kick him out of the city? Kicking him out of office is one thing, but separating a guy from his friends and possibly family, is honestly an unimaginable idea. But I do believe that if there is a politician that is actually messing up, and he isn’t changing then yes, they can kick that man out of office/ town. Also another thing I wanted to talk about is the differences of Democracy and Monarchy, and which is better. Well with a Monarchy you have just one person (or in the case of Sparta two people), and that one person calls the shots, and whatever he says goes. He could listen to others, but he doesn’t have to, which to me seems a little selfish. The King is hogging all the power to himself, but that is why Democracy is better. With a democracy the people can call the shots, with voting. But sadly right now only rich men that own land can vote, hopefully it changes in the near future. But that’s all the topics that I have today, hopefully you can get another newspaper, and see my opinions again!
