Technology VS. Reading
Introduction: For this math project, the class sent out a survey to the whole school, student and faculty, pertaining to different subjects the students were interested in. For my data collection, I wanted to know the preference between technology and phones, versus reading. Personally, I enjoy reading very much and I was curious how many people in the school shared that interest over technology. A few days after I sent out my survey to the school, I received 75 responses. We collected data in google sheets and analyzed it along with making graphs with Microsoft Excel.
Data: Graph 1 For this first graph, I just wanted to know the gender of the people I was surveying to see if gender had anything to do with their preference. Many more females answered than males.
Data: Graph 2 For this second graph, I started with a general question of books or social media. It came back as 60% of the responders enjoyed reading over the 40% that preferred social media.
Data: Graph 3 This third graph asked how many hours you spend on your phone in one day. The majority of people said one hour but there were some who said five hours or more. There was a very wide variety in these answers, many people answered for most of the options.
Data: Graph 4 For the fourth survey, I asked how many books people read a month. Many people answered below five and the most popular answer was one. I was surprised that some people read eight books a month but I was not surprised with the popular answers being between 1-3.
Data: Graph 5 For this graph I figured out what people prefer to do when they’re bored. It came out mostly as I expected, I thought many people would rather go on their phone out of boredom because it is so easily accessible instead of finding something else to do.
Conclusion To conclude my data results, many people preferred reading to social media but out of boredom or lack of things to do, most people will use their phone. In another chart that I didn’t put in this report, many people rated reading at a 10/10 while social media averaged around a 6.5/10 so that shows that a lot of people still really like reading.
