Philanthropists

HONOREES Pearl and Erwin Staller are “quiet” philanthropists. Their giving is not motivated by a desire for personal promotion. Instead, they are dedicated to benefiting the lives of people of all ages, and leveraging their philanthropy to motivate others. The arts, and arts education continue to be among their passions. The Heckscher Museum of Art is proud to honor the Stallers’ decades of generosity and friendship, and their significant contributions to the arts on Long Island. Pearl (“Freddie”) and Erwin met during their high school years in Hempstead. She received an undergraduate degree from Bennington College, studied economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate school, and received a master’s degree in economics from Columbia University while working at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Freddie and Erwin raised their family in Nassau County and then Suffolk County. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Erwin attended Allegheny College and served in the South Pacific during World War II, assigned to the U.S. Army Signal Corps 31st Division. After his tour of duty, he entered the field of property development. His business grew into construction and shopping center management with substantial holdings in Suffolk and Nassau Counties. Staller Associates, Inc. remains a privately held company. The Stallers are respected for their exemplary community service. Freddie is on the President’s Council of the Family Service League Board of Directors; Emeriti of the Long Island Community Foundation Board of Advisors; and Honorary Director, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Association. Erwin is a Trustee Emeriti of the Stony Brook Foundation. The Staller Center for the Arts at Stony Brook University is named in honor of Erwin’s parents. The Stallers also are active with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. C E L E B R A T E

D eborah and M ort Künstler Artists

HONOREES Brooklyn natives, Deborah and Mort Künstler, met as students at Pratt Institute, where Deborah majored in textile design and Mort in illustration. A family joke has it that Mort married Deborah so he didn’t have to pay for a model. Indeed, Deborah was her husband’s muse, and her likeness appears in hundreds of his works. Following their marriage, Deborah designed fabrics for the major New York firms Riegel Converters and M. Lowenstein Company. The Künstler family settled in Oyster Bay where Deborah and Mort still live. Taking a break from work to raise their children, Deborah later continued her career as an interior designer. She wrote a weekly column, “Ideas for Interiors,” for the Oyster Bay Guardian, which was picked up by McNaught Syndicate. Her interior design stories for Newsday’s Sunday Homes section appeared for over 20 years. Mort pursued freelance illustration, producing story images for magazines such as Boys’ Life, The Saturday Evening Post, Newsweek, and Good Housekeeping, as well as movie poster illustrations for major Hollywood productions. Assignments from National Geographic magazine introduced Mort to working with historians and the meticulous research needed to accurately render the past. He turned to painting historical subjects, and a solo exhibition at New York’s Hammer Galleries brought his work to the attention of art collectors. Mort is perhaps best known for his paintings of the Civil War which are the subject of books and an A&E television documentary. His paintings also feature scenes from the American West and Revolutionary War. Museum exhibitions have spotlighted Mort’s work, including the upcoming exhibition Mort Künstler: The New Nation at The Heckscher Museum of Art. Mort Künstler is widely regarded as a pre-eminent painter of American history.

THE HECKSCHER MUSEUM OF ART is proud to offer high-quality visual arts learning experiences for a diverse Long Island community. Programs continue to evolve and expand, reaching new audiences and creating more immersive, multi-sensory experiences for visitors of all ages. Exhibitions are complemented by opportunities for visitors to explore and discuss art, and participate in creating original works with traditional artist materials and 21st-century technology. Through Museum Discovery Programs, the Museum harnesses the extraordinary power of art to engage students in discovering new intellectual and creative connections. Over 7,000 K-12 students from Suffolk and Nassau Counties are involved in Museum Discovery Programs each year. Curriculum fosters creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration, with emphasis on integrated STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) learning. The annual high school juried exhibition Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum is a first-rate Museum-Classroom partnership that challenges students to accomplish professional-level work. The annual Portfolio Development Series brings together students and admission counselors from prestigious art schools to help young artists prepare their portfolios for college acceptance. ADOPT A WORK OF ART The Heckscher Museum of Art’s collection provides the institution’s primary educational resource. The Museum offers an “adoption program” focusing on the paintings and sculptures that require conservation. We hope The Heckscher Museum’s friends will embrace this essential program and become proud “parents” of the Museum’s most important treasures.

Available for Adoption George Picken’s (1898-1971) Big Wave is a significant example of the transformative effect of abstract expressionism on artists who worked in representational styles during the 1950s. The adhesion of the paint to the canvas surface has been compromised, requiring stabilization, filling, and in-painting. The work also requires surface cleaning and a compatible frame for its proper presentation. George Picken’s earliest work depicted industrial and urban scenes in a realist style and dark palette characteristic of the Depression era. During the 1940s, the artist gradually turned to rural landscapes painted in brighter colors, inspired by the surroundings at his country home in the Berkshires. In the 1950s, Picken turned away from realism altogether to explore pure abstraction. In the following decade he evolved a style which synthesized realism and abstraction. Big Wave is representative of his abstract style, depicting the movement and texture of water with flattened planes of color. Unlike his typical seascapes, Picken focused solely on the crashing wave, the white water of the surf dominating the canvas. Big Wave is scheduled for an upcoming exhibition of seascapes and marine painting. Cost to adopt this work: $2,450. C E L E B R A T E

THE HECKSCHER MUSEUM OF ART The Heckscher Museum of Art was founded in 1920 through the philanthropy of August Heckscher. It is an American Alliance of Museums accredited institution, one of only 800 nationwide. The Museum has a permanent collection of more than 2,500 works of American and European art spanning five centuries from the early 16th century to the present. Throughout the year, new exhibitions are presented, drawn from the Permanent Collection and from works on loan from museums and private collectors. Education programs annually engage over 7,000 school children from Nassau and Suffolk Counties with multidisciplinary learning experiences which enhance the New York State Learning Standards. The Museum has an active schedule of public programs that reach families, adults, and senior citizens. Many of these programs are offered free to the public. Through exhibitions and related educational programs, the Museum seeks to provide inspiring and transformative experiences to encourage a broader understanding of the past and present, and enrich the quality of life for the individuals it serves.
