The Heckscher Museum of Art is proud to honor Robin Tieken Hadley, and the memory of her late husband, John W.B. Hadley. Robin and John met in Chicago at a dinner party hosted by her aunt and uncle. Prompted by her aunt to talk about her latest endeavors, Robin responded that she had just returned from survival training in the Okefenokee Swamp. Whereas other dinner guests were unable to contribute to that conversational point, John replied that his family was in lumbering, a tenuous connection at best. After dinner, John walked Robin home. A native of New York City, John graduated from the Groton School and Yale University. He began his business career with the family-owned Michigan-California Lumber Company, and lived in Chicago from 1957 until 1981 where he was an involved member of the boards of Cook County Hospital and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In the late 1960s, he ventured into investments and established the Louzan Corporation in Huntington to develop electric cars. John and Robin married in 1974 and later moved to Lloyd Harbor with John’s four children, William, Morris, James, and Helen. John was elected to the Board of Trustees of The Heckscher Museum in 1982 and, for nine years, provided visionary, insightful, and generous leadership as Chairman, a position he held until his untimely death in 1994. That same year, Robin and John (posthumously) received the Outstanding Philanthropists Award from the LI Chapter of the National Society of Fundraising Executives. Robin was born in Chicago. She attended boarding school at Chatham Hall, Virginia, received her Bachelor’s degree from Skidmore College, and a Master’s in Education Administration from Loyola University Chicago. She taught at the Latin School in Chicago and at Friends Academy, Locust Valley. In addition to her steadfast involvement with the Museum and fundraising for Planned Parenthood, Robin is a trustee emerita of Chatham Hall, former President of its Board of Trustees, and benefactor to student scholarships and The John W.B. Hadley Instructorship In Science. Robin is an extraordinary person—modest, enthusiastic, determined, and generous. She inspires others to achieve.

The Heckscher Museum of Art recognizes honorees Sandra Benny and Richard Vaux for their many contributions to advancing the arts and cultural life on Long Island. Artists Sandra Benny and Richard Vaux shared a “studio compound” in Lloyd Neck from 1983 until their recent relocation to new studios in Hudson, Ohio. They met as graduate students at Northern Illinois University and were married in 1969, beginning their professional artistic careers on Long Island. Drawing lessons at the Cleveland Museum of Art and a high school study program at the Cleveland Institute of Art, led to an academic scholarship at Ohio University where Sandra earned her BFA. Nature has always been the greatest inspiration for Sandra’s drawings. The majestic color combinations and designs found in feathers, flowers, sunsets, clouds and other phenomena of the natural world create a treasure trove of possible combinations. She believes we are stewards of this earth and describes her collective body of work as “the diary of my life.” Sandra is a retired Senior Adjunct Professor of Drawing and Design, LIU Post. She has exhibited in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the United States. In keeping with the historical Romantic tradition in American landscape painting, Richard is inspired by the subtleties of nature, seen especially in its light and atmospheric effects. His landscapes do not record a specific topographical vista, but rather convey a sense of the eternal in nature. His first major exhibition in 1964 at The Heckscher Museum of Art led to an invitation to exhibit at the 1964/1965 World’s Fair. Since 1969, Richard has been Professor Emeritus at Adelphi University, teaching painting and drawing. He is represented in collections and has exhibited throughout the United States, Canada, South America, Europe, and the Far East.

THE FOUNDER’S SOCIETY One of the most powerful ways to sustain the Museum’s mission over time is to build endowments in support of general operations in the areas of education, scholarship, collections, exhibitions, and facilities. Planned gifts are an essential part of this effort, which is why the Board of Trustees established the Founder’s Society to recognize those who have made a commitment to the longevity of this venerable institution by including The Heckscher Museum of Art in their will. The Museum would like to thank the following members of the Founder’s Society: Anonymous Beverly J. Bell Robin T. Hadley Margaret M. Hargraves

ADOPT A WORK OF ART The Heckscher Museum of Art’s collection provides the institution’s primary educational resource. The Museum offers an “adoption program” focusing on the paintings and sculptures that require conservation. We hope The Heckscher Museum’s friends will embrace this essential program and become proud “parents” of some of the Museum’s most important treasures.

Available for Adoption

Ilya Bolotowsky’s Still Life with Red Cloth, Fruit and Delft Pitcher is one of the Museum’s loveliest early 20th-century still life paintings. A founding member of the New York-based American Abstract Artists group in 1936, Bolotowsky was a Russian-born artist who came to the United States in 1923. This piece is a transitional work depicting a traditional still life subject with roots in 17th-century Dutch painting and is an example of the transformative aesthetic of early 20th-century modernism. Conservation of this work is a top priority as the painting is scheduled to be included in the exhibition Cornucopia: Still Lifes from the Collection opening in May 2016. The paint surface needs to be stabilized and attached to a new canvas support, mounted to a stretcher, and the areas of loss inpainted. For exhibition, this work also requires a compatible frame. Cost to adopt this work: $5,250. Ilya Bolotowsky, Still Life with Red Cloth, Fruit and Delft Pitcher, n.d. Gift of Esphyr Slobodkina.

ABOUT THE HECKSCHER MUSEUM OF ART THE HECKSCHER MUSEUM OF ART was founded in 1920 through the philanthropy of August Heckscher. It is an American Alliance of Museums accredited institution, one of only 800 nationwide. The Museum has a permanent collection of more than 2,500 works of American and European art spanning five centuries from the early 16th century to the present. Throughout the year, new exhibitions are presented, drawn from the Permanent Collection and from works on loan from museums and private collectors. Education programs annually engage over 7,000 school children from Nassau and Suffolk Counties with multidisciplinary learning experiences that enhance the New York State Learning Standards. The Museum has an active schedule of public programs that reach families, adults, and senior citizens. Many of these programs are offered free to the public. Through exhibitions and related educational programs, the Museum seeks to provide inspiring and transformative experiences to encourage a broader understanding of the past and present, and enrich the quality of life for the individuals it serves.
