T H E P O W E R O F A N I M A G I N AT I V E M I N D Devon and Thomas Carroll understand the importance of arts education during a child’s critical developmental years. The Carroll’s advocacy for arts education inspired the theme of this year’s Celebrate Achievement Benefit. The majority of artwork featured throughout this Journal was created by children using the digital painting stations at The Heckscher Museum. Each image offers a fascinating glimpse into a child’s imagination and the unique ways in which they express ideas. Time and again, research concludes that children involved with the arts develop notable advantages including gains in academic achievement, the ability to make connections between multiple disciplines, and the skills to formulate creative ideas and solutions. The Heckscher Museum is a leader in arts education on Long Island. The Museum involves more than 10,000 children annually in arts learning experiences. School programs span the years between kindergarten and preparation for college and career. Engaging programs for families are offered throughout the year and include Heckscher Family Hour, the annual DRAW OUT! community arts festival, the (new) DRAW IN winter family festival, Summer Drop-In Workshops, and family-friendly activities centered around major community events such as the Huntington Tulip Festival, Huntington Village Art Walk, Long Island Fall Festival, and Halloween. The Heckscher Museum is also a learning destination for Long Island’s teachers. The Museum’s workshops for education professionals have CTLE (Continuing Teacher & Leader Education) certification from the New York State Education Department.

HONOREES DEVON and TOM CARROLL grew up on Long Island and currently reside in Cold Spring Harbor with their two children, Thomas Carroll II (TW), age six, and Kingsley, age three. Devon is an alumna of The College of The Holy Cross, and Tom is a graduate of C.W. Post/Long Island University. Despite majoring in Art History, Devon moved to Wall Street upon graduation, where she currently is a U.S. Corporate Bond Broker at the GFI Group, a subsidiary of BGC Partners in New York City. Tom is a Risk Advisor at Total Dollar Insurance in Port Washington. Devon and Tom are advocates for visual arts education for children, and understand the unique importance of the arts in child development. Art education fosters critical thinking, visual literacy, and the pursuit of creative and innovative approaches—the benefits of which last a lifetime. These are the skills and abilities Devon and Tom nurture with their children. The Carrolls have dedicated time and resources to The Heckscher Museum’s school and family programs that annually reach over 10,000 Long Island children. That is why they are champions of The Heckscher Museum of Art. The Museum is such an incredible resource with considerable potential to affect our community. “We’d like to get word out to younger families that may not know this place exists.” Devon and Tom cherish their community and their friends in it. They are at the forefront of young philanthropists. Their involvement extends to people and organizations that have positive influences. In addition to The Heckscher Museum, they have been supporters of various charities and organizations including Save the Children, The Caumsett Foundation, Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery, among many others. THE H ECKSCH E R M USE UM OF ART The Heckscher Museum brings art and people together. It is a catalyst for discovery, imagination, the exchange of ideas, and the sharing of experiences. Nearly 100 years ago, businessman and philanthropist August Heckscher (1848-1941) donated his art collection and built the Museum for the community. He believed that people living outside of urban areas also should have access to the fine arts as a part of their daily lives. Mr. Heckscher was a champion of arts education for children. The Heckscher Museum plays a prominent role in the cultural and educational life of Long Islanders. An average of six changing exhibitions each year highlight the Museum’s impressive Permanent Collection as well as works lent by artists, collectors, and other museums. The Museum lends works of art from its collection to museums around the nation for special exhibitions. A leader in K-12 visual arts education, Museum Discovery Programs reach over 8,000 elementary, middle, and high school students each year. Public programs engage young children, families, and adults with art thinking and art making. As The Heckscher Museum approaches its Centennial in 2020, it is committed to expanding its role as a cultural and educational leader on Long Island.

We are proud to support The Heckscher Museum of Art’s many contributions to our lives.
