and Nassau Counties. The exhibition will include approximately 80 works of art. Jurors for the 2022 exhibition are Karli Wurzelbacher, Curator, and artist Emily Martin. Martin is a New York-based weaver, installation artist, and textile designer. She is a graduate of the Maryland Institute of Art. Martin was a 2014 Long Island’s Best finalist as a junior at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School. In addition to the exhibition in the galleries, images of the Long Island’s Best student artwork, their inspiration artwork, and artist statements will be featured on Heckscher.org beginning in May and in an accompanying catalog.
Long Island's Best
Long Island’s Best is the most prestigious
juried competition for Long Island high school students. Throughout the school year, Museum educators provided students with inspiring, immersive experiences through in-depth study and discussion about works of art on view in the galleries. The students visited the Museum in person or through a
virtual classroom. Each student then selected a work of art as their inspiration piece. They went on to create an original artwork and write an artist’s statement explaining their creative process. More than 300 student submissions were received representing schools across Suffolk

GLOBAL ASIAS: CONTEMPORARY ASIAN & ASIAN AMERICAN ART
FROM THE COLLECTIONS OF JORDAN D. SCHNITZER AND HIS FAMILY FOUNDATION JUNE 4 – SEPTEMBER 18 Exuberant Forms reshapes conventional views of abstract art – its composition, palette, and its cultural implications. Moving Stories features powerful prints and mixed media works that reflect the experiences of migration, both within Asia and beyond. Asias Reinvented showcases two and three-dimensional works that transform styles and techniques of traditional Asian arts into contemporary and cosmopolitan pieces. Curated by Chang Tan, Assistant Professor of Art History and Asian Studies at Penn State, the exhibition provides an opportunity to move away from considering Asia as a geographical location and instead invites us to think broadly about how “Asia” has long served as an imaginative construct.
Jacob Hashimoto, (American, b. 1973) Tiny Rooms and Tender Promises, 2016. Mixografia print on handmade paper and archival pigment print with pushpins. Courtesy of Durham Press; Right, Roger Shimomura (Japanese-American, b. 1939), Mistaken Identities: for Dorothea Lange, 2005. Lithograph. Courtesy of the artist. Both, Collection of Jordan D. Schnitzer.
Drawn from the multifaceted collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation, Global Asias examines the vibrant, playful, and subtly subversive characteristics of contemporary Asian and Asian American art. The exhibition features the work of fifteen artists who present a rich array of techniques and cultural motivations to create diverse “Asias” in a modern global context, including internationally renowned artists such as Jacob Hashimoto, Jun
Kaneko, Hung Liu, Takashi Murakami, and Rirkrit Tiravanija. The exhibition is divided into three sections: Exuberant Forms, Moving Stories, and Asias Reinvented. Through these vantage points, the artists – whose heritage spans China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam – encourage audiences to be both challenged and inspired by the artwork.
FINAL CALL TO ARTISTS: LONG ISLAND BIENNIAL Apply at Heckscher.org/libiennial by Saturday, April 30. Exhibition Opens: October 1, 2022
RICHARD MAYHEW: REINVENTING LANDSCAPE THROUGH APRIL 24
Rockwell Kent, Nocturnal Dance, c. 1910-11, oil on canvas. Gift of the Baker/Pisano Collection. Conserved in 2021 through the Adopt a Work of Art Program with funds donated by Judith Bernhang.
Take the time to see the extraordinary works by Richard Mayhew before the exhibition closes. Throughout the run of the exhibition, Museum Educators have worked with 7th graders in the Amityville School District to introduce them to this prolific artist, himself an Amityville native. The students created their own impressive Mayhew-inspired artwork.

THROUGH SEPTEMBER 18 Spanning the nineteenth century to the present, the celestial artworks on view in Moonstruck give visual form to our fascination with the moon in all its phases. The 32 artworks on view reveal the intersections of romanticism and technology, mystery and discovery, imagination, and fact. In light of space tourism and NASA’s plans for the next moon landing as early as 2025, these images reflect the perpetual pull of the moon. Just in time for the exhibition, Rockwell Kent’s (1882-1971) striking painting, Nocturnal Dance, was conserved through the Adopt a Work of Art Program by long-time member and donor Judith Bernhang. The surface was cleaned and revarnished, returning the painting to its original appearance. Known for his book illustrations, Kent’s early works include landscapes and marine views. Kent studied with William Merritt Chase and spent several seasons at the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art. Moonstruck is organized by Karli Wurzelbacher, Curator, and Shelly DeMaria, art historian and curator. For information about the Adopt a Work Program, visit Heckscher.org/give/ways-to-give/ or contact Deborah Johnson at Johnson@Heckscher.org
