Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum, the most prestigious juried exhibition for Long Island high school students, is now open. The Museum received more than 450 student entries from 69 schools throughout Suffolk and Nassau Counties. From these, 87 works of art were selected for the exhibit. Long Island’s Best is the only juried exhibition on Long Island that offers high school students the opportunity to show their work in a museum and to be featured in a full-color catalog.
The Long Island’s Best education program spans the school year. High school classes
come to the Museum where Educators involve students with in-depth study and discussion about works of art. Each student selects a work of art to inspire the creation of their own original accompanied by an artist’s statement explaining their creative process. The schools select and submit student artwork for the juried competition. Jurors for the 2024 Long Island’s Best student competition were The Heckscher Museum’s Consulting Curator of Contemporary Art, Meredith Brown, Ph.D., and documentary filmmaker Andrea Wozny, a 1999 Long Island’s Best alumnus and 2023 Celebrate Achievement Benefit honoree.

Dear Friends,
Two new exhibitions recently opened that are well worth a visit. The Rains are Changing Fast is brimming with significant additions to the permanent collection from the past five years. Th ese new additions are shown alongside artwork that has long anchored the Museum’s collection. Viewed together, these new and beloved paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints, and videos reveal the diverse ways in which artists contend with environmental and cultural transformation. Now in its 28th year, Long Island’s Best showcases the amazing talents of high school student artists, and promises to amaze and delight you.
In May, the Museum will host a monumental international exhibition George Grosz: The Stick Men co-organized by curators at The Heckscher Museum of Art and Das kleine Grosz Museum in Berlin, Germany. George Grosz (b. Germany, 1893-1959) is widely recognized as one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. He is familiar to Heckscher Museum members and visitors as his masterpiece Eclipse of the Sun (1926) has been part of the permanent collection since 1968. Grosz came to live in Huntington after he immigrated to America in 1933, taught art classes, and juried art shows at the Museum.
This special exhibition of The Stick Men series, a body of works painted by Grosz, was created while he lived in Huntington. These images are haunting and, for Grosz, their creation must have been both an act of exorcism and warning. In producing these powerful images throughout the 1940s, Grosz worked to rid himself of internal ghosts resulting from the horrific news coming out of Germany. Grosz often spoke of frustrations with contemporary art that was disconnected from politics. He felt passionately that the ongoing purpose of art was to be a mirror of current times and to provoke thought and action. The works in Grosz’s Stick Men series bear witness to the crimes of humanity and terrors of war, which sadly are as prescient today as when he first created them.
The mission at The Heckscher Museum is always to create opportunities for everyone
to experience art that broadens understanding of the past, fosters community connections to the present, and creates diverse possibilities for the future. We hope that each of you will utilize the Museum to find some time and space for respite, for community connection, to join in conversation, all of which we hope will lead to increased understanding and healing in this world.
With gratitude,

This is the first appearance in decades of Grosz’s groundbreaking series in an expanded exhibition following European success.
George Grosz (1893–1959) created the Stick Men series in Huntington, New York, where he lived from 1947 until shortly before his death. Grosz was an interna-
tionally renowned German born artist who remained invested in political art following his immigration to the United States in 1933. He became a citizen in 1938.
Featuring 33 watercolors, oils, and drawings, the exhibition is the first focused on the Stick Men series since it debuted in New York City in 1948. Seventy-five years later, Grosz’s warning against fascism and global conflict is as relevant as ever.
George Grosz: The Stick Men was organized by Das kleine Grosz Museum in Berlin, which is dedicated to the artist’s career. Featuring works from
The Heckscher Museum and European public and private collections, the Berlin exhibition was extended for more than a month due to its popularity.
At The Hecksher Museum, an expanded exhibition will include additional works from its own collection, including Grosz’s masterpiece Eclipse of the Sun (1926). It will also feature loans from the Addison Gallery of American Art, Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College, Harvard Art Museums, Art Students League of New York, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Grosz’s images depict hollow figures in an apocalyptic landscape, offering a searing indictment of humanity following World War II. Stick Men is the term that defines Grosz’s drawing of a man made only of bones. He used the figure to represent the universal victim of war. It was in Huntington that Grosz created the Stick Men, his last major series of works.
Heather Arnet, Executive Director and CEO, observes: “In Stick Men, Grosz presents the viewer with the realities of the atrocities committed during two successive world wars and the indelible impacts that would be felt by the people and visible on their land long after flags were waved and victors announced.”
George Grosz: The Stick Men was organized by Karli Wurzelbacher, Ph.D., Chief Curator, The Heckscher Museum of Art, and Pay Matthis Karstens, Ph.D., Curator, and Alice Delage, Ph.D., Co-Curator, Das kleine Grosz Museum, Berlin, Germany.

Accompanying The Stick Men exhibition is an illustrated 152-page hardcover book in German and English. A collaboration between The Heckscher Museum of Art and Das kleine Grosz Museum, Berlin, where the exhibition debuted, the publication explores the history, context, and legacy of George Grosz’s Stick Men series, which he completed in Huntington after World War II. The publication includes essays by Pay Matthis Karstens, Ph.D., and Juerg Judin, Ph.D., at Das kleine Grosz Museum, and Karli Wurzelbacher, Ph.D., Chief Curator at The Heckscher Museum of Art.

THE RAINS ARE CHANGING FAST: NEW ACQUISITIONS IN CONTEXT THROUGH SEPTEMBER 1
This exhibition highlights new acquisitions alongside artwork that has long anchored The Heckscher Museum's collection. Meredith A. Brown Ph.D., Consulting Curator of Contemporary Art, is Co-Curator of the exhibition. Here, Brown provides insight on the exhibition concept in this example of “paired” artwork from new acquisitions with Museum collection pieces.
Judy Chicago’s Guided by the Goddess (1985), and Deborah Buck’s They Had Stars in Their Eyes (2020) were both recently accepted into the collection. Those works are viewed alongside Alice Rahon’s La Conjuration des Antilopes (1943), a painting that joined the collection in 1980.
According to Brown, "These three works, each made about forty years apart by three
distinctive artists, engage with questions of artmaking, mythmaking, and spirituality. Chicago, best known for her monumental feminist art installation The Dinner Party (1974–79, The Brooklyn Museum), has long been interested in the role myths play in the lives of women. Guided by the Goddess belongs to her series The Birth Project, which celebrates women’s life-giving capacity and their creative spirit. Buck’s painting also portrays a symbolic world in which familiar things are made strange and expressionistic creatures take on emblematic power. Her imagery evokes an absurdist or magical tale, yet she makes it to provoke questions. Rahon, too, was interested in the magic of storytelling. Her painting reflects a fascination with prehistoric and non-Western art, including cave art and petroglyphs.”

CONSERVATION GRANTS SPOTLIGHT SCULPTOR EMMA STEBBINS
Clockwise: Emma Stebbins, Sandalphon, 1866, marble. The Heckscher Museum of Art, Museum Purchase: Town of Huntington Art Acquisition Fund; Emma Stebbins, Lotus Eater, 1863, marble. The Heckscher Museum of Art, Museum Purchase: Town of Huntington Art Acquisition Fund; a view of Lotus Eater before conservation.
The Heckscher Museum recently acquired two exceptional, rare marble sculptures by American artist Emma Stebbins (18151882): Lotus Eater, 1863, and Sandalphon, 1866. A portrait of Stebbins painted around 1839 by American artist Henry Inman (1801-1846) also has joined the collection.
Lotus Eater, Sandalphon, and the portrait of Stebbins have been in a private collection for decades and likely have not been on public view in more than 100 years. Each sculpture required extensive cleaning of the discolored marble surfaces and careful repairs. The portrait has grime and a dull varnish layer obscuring the pigments and the canvas requires stabilization.
Stebbins is the sculptor of Angel of the Waters (1873) which sits atop the Bethesda Fountain in New York’s Central Park. Angel
of the Waters represents the first time that a female artist received a public art commission in New York City. This monumental work has since become the symbol of Central Park and an enduring icon for the city.
The Museum’s Chief Curator, Dr. Karli Wurzelbacher, notes, “These conservation efforts are crucial to ensuring that Emma Stebbins’ artistic legacy is celebrated, protected and shared with future generations.”
Despite her remarkable transatlantic career, many people are not aware of the full scope and impact of Stebbins’ life and achievements. She was born in New York City to a prominent banking family and received her early artistic training in drawing and painting. In 1857, Stebbins moved to Rome, the center of the neoclassical world, and became a successful sculptor. Her work encompasses unprecedented neoclassical imagery of nineteenth-century laborers, inventive and incisive depictions of literary and biblical subjects, and moving portrait busts of friends and family members, as well as monumental public sculptures in New York and Boston.
In Rome, Stebbins met the celebrated American actor Charlotte Cushman (1816-1876). Cushman was a “superstar” of the theater and her performances garnered acclaim throughout Europe and America. Stebbins and Cushman viewed their relationship
as a marriage, and they lived together until Cushman’s death.
Emma Stebbins’ work has been essential to The Heckscher Museum’s collection since the 1920s. Charles August Heckscher, an uncle of the Museum’s founder, commissioned Stebbins’s Commerce and Industry in 1859. With the addition of Lotus Eater and Sandalphon, The Heckscher Museum now stewards the largest public collection of Stebbins’ work. Lotus Eater and Sandalphon were conserved by Tatti Art Conservation in 2023. Henry Inman’s portrait of Stebbins will be conserved by ArtCare Conservation this year.
The conservation of these works was supported through the NYSCA/GHHN Conservation Treatment Grant Program administered by Greater Hudson Heritage Network. The program is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with support of the Office of the Governor and the New York Legislature. Additional support is provided by the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation.
NYSCA INTERPRETATIVE GRANT SUPPORTS A “MUSEUM FOR ALL"
“The NYSCA grant allows us to continue to provide our entire community greater access to the exhibitions, programs, and impactful arts and cultural knowledge – truly becoming a ‘museum for all’,” said Heather Arnet, Executive Director and CEO.
NYSCA Chair Katherine Nicholls added, “Thanks to the unwavering support of Governor Hochul and our Legislature, NYSCA is so proud to support the work of organizations and artists from all across New York. Spanning the entire breadth of the arts and culture sector – from world-renowned performers to after-school programs, from long established museums to community arts collectives – these organizations and artists together are a powerful driver of health, tourism, economy and education for our residents and visitors. On behalf of Council and staff, congratulations to The Heckscher
Museum of Art and thank you for your perseverance, your creativity, and your tireless service to New York State.”
Spanish language, ASL, and braille translation are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
The Heckscher Museum has received a grant award of $49,500 from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). The grant, which supports nonprofit arts and culture, allows the Museum to grow its efforts toward accessibility and Spanish language offerings to create an inclusive environment for all visitors.
The grant covers Spanish translation of all curatorial material, including wall text and exhibition catalogues; all welcome materials, brochures, and exhibition handouts for visitors; educational materials and brochures, and funding for bilingual Family Hour programs throughout the year. The grant also will ensure that Braille tactile signs with Museum information is in place, and that American Sign Language interpreters are included in all exhibition openings and select public programs.
