The Heckscher Museum of Art’s 2022 Benefit celebrated the future and welcomed Museum Executive Director and CEO Heather Arnet. The evening was a great success, benefiting the exciting exhibitions and education programs for the coming year. With a shimmering poolside cocktail hour and a glittery candlelit tent, the theme – Moonstruck – came to life and inspired the dazzling fashions worn by guests!

Exhibitions

JANUARY 28 – APRIL 16

Viewfinders is guest curated by Susan Van Scoy, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Art History at St. Joseph’s University, Long Island.

Since the invention of the camera, photographers have enthralled viewers by interpreting the natural world. Viewfinders: Photographers Frame Nature explores artists’ varied responses to the relationship between nature and humans.

These lens-based works reveal the divergent ways in which nature continues to fuel documentation of the human experience and imagination—from images symbolizing the untamed power of nature to those in which the landscape has been shaped and exploited by humans. It traces the lure of photography through five themes culminating

in contemporary times when every person with a smartphone has the power to “frame nature.”

Dr. Van Scoy’s selection of works include black and white, color, and digital photography, photomontage, and video dating from the late 19th century to the present. More than 70 works are grouped thematically in five sections: Picturesque, Wild, Denatured, Abstract, and Imaginative.

Legendary American photographers including Edward Steichen, Larry Fink, Berenice Abbott, and William Eggleston are represented, alongside newly acquired photographs by Kenji Nakahashi and Jeremy Dennis. Dr. Van Scoy also selected a substantial number of works by notable Long Island image makers.

Clockwise, Kenji Nakahashi (1947-2017), Trimming, 1987, chromogenic color print. Anonymous gift in memory of Kenji Nakahashi; Berenice Abbott, (1898-1991) West Street, 1936, gelatin silver print. Gift of Mr. Morton Brozinsky; Edward Steichen (1879-1973), Moonlight: The Pond, 1906, rotogravure. Museum Purchase.

JANUARY 28, 2023 – MARCH 2024

Exploring the spaces we inhabit, Raise the Roof encompasses more than 50 artworks from The Heckscher Museum’s collection that reflect the many meanings of home. The house is a site where daily life unfolds, work takes place, identities cohere and shift, memories form, and imaginations take flight. Raise the Roof: The Home in Art demonstrates the central role that homes play in our lives and in art.

Curator Dr. Karli Wurzelbacher debuts significant recent additions to the collection by contemporary artists such as Courtney M. Leonard, Kenji Nakahashi, Becky Suss, and Stella Waitzkin, and features a promised gift by sculptor Ed Haddaway. Never-before-exhibited photographs by Larry Fink and prints by Robert Dash are featured as are artworks by Romare Bearden, Salvador Dali, Olafur Eliasson, Miriam Schapiro, and Esphyr Slobodkina. Each artist’s work embodies home in a singular and intimate way.

ECLIPSE OF THE SUN LOANED TO HISTORIC GERMAN EXHIBITION

George Grosz’s Eclipse of the Sun, 1926, one of the Museum’s most significant works of art, is currently on international loan to the prestigious Staatsgalerie Stuttgart.

The painting is a highlight among the 100 works in the exhibition George Grosz in Berlin. Grosz was a leader of the politically outspoken Berlin Dada movement, turning his art into a weapon of sharp societal and political commentary. The exhibition examines how the artist’s style and subject matter developed in his native Berlin between the First World War and the Nazi’s rise to power in 1933. The exhibition’s curators note that Grosz’s art from this period “… ruthlessly stages the moral decay of German society. Grosz was legally tried several times on charges of ‘attacking public morals’ and blasphemy.” The exhibition will be on view through February 26.

Grosz fled to the United States in 1933 in advance of World War II. He lived and worked in Huntington from 1947 until shortly before his death in 1959.

THREE PAINTINGS:

RICHARD MAYHEW, BETTY PARSONS, JANE WILSON

JANUARY 28 - JUNE 4

This focused installation brings together the work of three Long Island artists who boldly paved their own creative paths. Mayhew (b. 1924), Parsons (1900-1982), and Wilson (1924-2015) each created abstract paintings inspired, in part, by their experiences of nature, specific landscapes, or weather. They all worked in New York City during the 1950s, when Abstract Expressionism was the dominant style. Artists of color and artists who were women were sidelined by many galleries and museums throughout the twentieth century. Mayhew and Wilson forged careers by teaching and by joining artist collectives (Spiral for Mayhew; Hansa Gallery for Wilson), while Parsons started her own influential commercial art gallery. Explore new exhibitions inside.

Richard Mayhew, Pescadero, 2014, oil canvas. Museum Purchase: Town of Huntington Art Acquisition Fund.
