CELEBRATING 100 YEARS
October November December 2020
Dear Friends, In the prime of its life at 100, The Heckscher Museum of Art has seen its share of changes in the past century: in art, education, technology, social trends, leadership, and more. At every turn, the Museum was ready to acclimate to new circumstances in its mission to serve the Long Island community. Leadership: We express utmost appreciation to Michael W. Schantz, Ph.D., for a decade of effective and thoughtful leadership that has continued to propel the Museum forward as a cultural and educational leader on Long Island. During his tenure as Executive Director & CEO, Michael guided the Museum through its most recent accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums, and built a qualified and dedicated staff while leading the Museum into its Centennial year. John E. Coraor, Museum Trustee and former Director of the Museum (19882000) will serve as Interim Director. The Board of Trustees has formed a Transition Committee to lead the search for the next Executive Director. The year 2020 certainly has proven our ability to adapt quickly. Exhibitions and programs went virtual while the Museum was closed. New content was created for learning at home. There are many ways technology has made the Museum’s content as exciting and inviting as ever. During his tenure, Michael Schantz always championed the Museum while speaking with students, politicians, members, and supporters. From the top, with Long Island's Best student Stephanie Renna; with Museum donors Joan and Milton Bagley; leading a conversation with artist Mort Künstler.
Virtual School Programs: Beginning this fall, Long Island students and teachers are able to connect with Museum Educators through virtual learning. Educators will lead programs from the Museum’s
galleries for students in their school classrooms. Our commitment to K-12 education remains steadfast, and technology allows us to make sure that arts learning takes place. Thanks to our Education Sponsors, school programs will thrive, even within a challenging environment. Welcome Back! The Museum reopened on August 1. A new online ticketing system assured that social distancing and visitor safety protocols were in place upon visitor arrival. The response to the Museum’s precautions has been wonderful! As we move forward we have added limited group tours and some live programs. Fundraising: This year’s cancellation of the annual Celebrate Achievement Benefit meant that the Museum was facing a large loss in revenue. Five sponsors pooled their resources to offer a Challenge opportunity. We are ever grateful to these sponsors and the individuals and foundations who generously contributed to the Challenge and have helped safeguard our exhibitions and education programs through 2020. We are pleased to recognize them in this issue. I hope you will visit the Museum soon as the Long Island Biennial exhibition opens on October 15! And, I encourage you to support the Museum any way you can.

THE LONG ISLAND BIENNIAL OCTOBER 17 – JANUARY 10, 2021
Preview Days - October 15 & 16
The 2020 Long Island Biennial, a juried exhibition featuring art from contemporary artists across Suffolk and Nassau Counties, received more than 800 artwork entries, with 100 works selected for exhibition. The final exhibition represents 52 artists living in Long Island communities stretching from Freeport to Port Washington to Shelter Island Heights. For the first time, most artists will show two or three artworks, presenting viewers with a fuller picture of their recent work. Inaugurated in 2010, the Long Island Biennial offers Long Island's professional artists a singular opportunity to share their work through a prestigious exhibition, and provides a unique and exciting space for visitors to see a snapshot of contemporary art on Long Island. “In the year of our centennial, it was serendipitous that the three jurors happened to select 100 artworks for exhibition,” said Karli Wurzelbacher, Curator. “The volume and quality of the submissions challenged the jurors, yet resulted in a remarkable exhibition that incorporates many media, genres, and styles.” The jurors for the 2020 Biennial are Erin Kimmel, Art Writer and Ph.D. candidate in Art History at Stony Brook University; Heidi Lange, Director of DC Moore Gallery, New York City; and Paton Miller, Artist/Curator.

Now more than ever, art is invaluable – a creative outlet for students to express themselves,” said Joy Weiner, Director of Education. “Despite the challenges we will face this upcoming school year, our goal is to provide students with an enriching experience.”
Even with the challenges of 2020 in play, Museum Educators have quickly adapted to new ways of reaching students and teachers. For many students, visiting The Heckscher Museum – in person or virtually – is their very first experience with an art museum, or their first exposure to original works of art. The Museum collaborates with six area chapters of the National Art Honor Society on after-school programs. This year’s programs will be virtual. The high school education program, Long Island’s Best, culminates in a professionallypresented juried exhibition of student artwork held in the Museum’s galleries each spring. In addition, the Museum will provide online resources as part of its annual Portfolio Development Series, which allows Long Island high school juniors and seniors to reach admissions advisors from the nation’s top art colleges. While these experiences may be all digital this year, Educators will work closely with teachers and school administrators to tailor seamless and inspiring programs. The Museum is a CTLE (Continuing Teacher & Leader Education) New York State Education Department approved sponsor and a learning destination for Long Island teachers. It will hold its fall professional development program on November 3, with activities inspired by the Long Island Biennial exhibition.
