The Museum was thrilled to partner with four Garden Club of America chapters to bring this stunning multisensory experience to life: North Country Garden Club (Oyster Bay), North Suffolk Garden Club (Stony Brook), South Side Garden Club (Bay Shore), and Three Harbors Garden Club (Cold Spring Harbor). Teams from each club created 12 floral designs inspired by works of art in the exhibition The Heckscher Museum Celebrates 100. NEW ACQUISITIONS HIGHLIGHTED
Twenty-four works of art – a combination of new acquisitions and works on paper – have been rotated into The Heckscher Museum Celebrates 100 for the second half of the exhibition. Guests are encouraged to visit or revisit the show to discover even more of the Museum’s rich permanent collection. Paintings by Robert G. Carter and Samuel Colman, acquired this past year, are on view for the first time. Additional works from the collection include artists Romare Bearden, Bernice Abbott, and Miriam Schapiro. “While we can’t show the entire collection, these new additions to the exhibition help showcase the depth of the Museum’s holdings and inform the future,” said Curator Karli Wurzelbacher.
Artist Deborah Buck’s Foundation is focused on supporting women in the fine arts. She found a natural fit in contributing to the Adopt a Work of Art Program to conserve January, a painting by Helen Torr. “I want to actively support organizations that are bringing women artists out of the shadows and are doing their part to support women. Torr is a classic example. She deserves to be remembered and celebrated right alongside [her husband] Arthur Dove,” said Buck. Long-standing Museum Members, Andrea and Neil Kreinik, adopted Helen Torr’s From Piano in honor of Andrea’s late mother, Lillian R. Schwartz. “The work really struck me. The painting shows the heart and soul of a piano and reminded me of my mom, who was a classical pianist and played even at 107.”
The Evelyn Beatrice Longman Youth Eternal fountain was commissioned by founders August and Anna Atkins Heckscher to coincide with the dedication of the new museum in 1920. After a century, the fountain was in need of restoration, particularly the bronze frog that is the focal point of the fountain. The frog and the bronze commemorative plaque were recently conserved in memory of artist and friend Norine E. Lyons by Bob, Karolyn, Andrea, and Emily Harwood.
OPENING IN JANUARY RICHARD MAYHEW: REINVENTING LANDSCAPE JANUARY 20 TO APRIL 24, 2022 Discover how this nationally renowned artist, born in Amityville, Long Island, reimagined nineteenth- and twentieth-century American landscape to express his perspective on nature and the environment as an artist of African American and Native American descent. More than two dozen paintings represent Richard Mayhew’s work from the 1960s through today. MOONSTRUCK: LUNAR ART FROM THE COLLECTION OPENS JANUARY 20, 2022 Drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection, the celestial artworks on view explore how artists have been drawn to the moon for reasons scientific, mythic, and symbolic.
