HOW IT WORKS?

STORM GLASS INSTRUCTIONS

CULTURE

THE ADMIRAL FITZROY STORM GLASS

HISTORY The Storm Glass Barometer came into general use in the early 1700's. Sailors attached this instrument to the mast of their ships and by interpretation of the constantly changing crystal formations, relied upon it to forecast good weather and forbidding conditions at sea. Admiral Robert Fitzroy (1805-1865), as commander of the HMS Beagle, participated in the Charles Darwin's expedition (1834-1836), and conducted a detailed study of this instrument. He refined the chemical formulation and published observational guidelines as indicated below.

HOW TO READ?

How this storm glass really works is a mystery, but it is believed that electromagnetic changes in weather patterns activate the crystals inside (sealed-glass chamber fill with crystals when air pressure decreases)

USES AND MAINTENANCE When you received our Storm Glass Barometer it will be in a state of disruption and may take a week or more to settle into an active state. The glass should start as clear liquid to reset the barometer. If it is not clear, gently shake the tube to redistribute the crystals into the soluble liquid and/or gently heat the tube with a hairdryer to dissolve any remaining crystals. Do Not heat the glass until it becomes hot! Place the Storm Glass Barometer when the liquid is clear, in an area of your home that is not subject to sudden temperature changes. It should not be subjected to direct sunlight or an outside wall or close to any heating or cooling vents. It may be necessary to test different locations in your home to find the area of optimal operation of the Storm Glass Barometer. Gradually as the temperature of the barometer stabilises to room temperature, the liquid will start to appear white and crystals will start to form. This is the normal activation cycle of the Storm Glass Barometer.

A

B

C

Leave the Storm Glass Barometer undisturbed and over the next week, it should begin doing its job of helping you to predict the weather. It may be necessary to reset the barometer by gently shaking to redistribute the crystals into liquid before achieving optimal performance. The barometer will need to be reset two to three times a year to keep its predictability.

FRONT

The optimal temperature range for crystals formation from 41oF (5oC) - 86oF (30oC). Below and above these temperatures ranges the crystals will dissolve and the liquid will appear clear. Once the glass has returned to the optimal temperature range, the crystals will reform. To avoid these temperature swings, please do not place in a hot sunny window or in a cold or drafty location.

WARNING This product contains flammable liquid and should be kept away from any combustible material. In case of accidental ingestion seek professional assistance or contact Poison Control Center immediately. In case of contact with skin, wash immediately with soap and water. Contains Camphor, Distilled Water, Ethanol and other trace elements. In case of breakage, clean split liquid warm water and mild soap.

The device can be explained with some of the fundamental principles of physics and mechanics (As theorized by Sir Isaac Newton, René Descartes and others).

+F1 = −F2 This principle states that when two objects collide, the total momentum of the objects before the collision is equal to the total momentum of the objects after the collision.

WHEN THE FIRST BALL OF NEWTON'S CRADLE COLLIDES WITH THE SECOND, THE FIRST BALL STOPS, BUT ITS MOMENTUM ISN'T LOST, JUST TRANSFERRED TO THE SECOND BALL, THEN THE THIRD, THEN THE FOURTH, UNTIL IT REACHES THE VERY LAST BALL.

MAGNETIC NORTh POLE MAGNETIC FIELD BAR MAGNET MAGNETIC SOUTH POLE

The tops of the steel hoops, being ferromagnetic, become a north pole in the presence of the south pole end of the black magnet, so they are attracted to the black magnet, but repel each other.

WARNING

THE MAGNETIC FORCE IN A MAGNET FLOWS FROM THE NORTH POLE TO THE SOUTH POLE. THIS CREATES A MAGNETIC FIELD AROUND A MAGNET.

The all-metal pendulum converts kinetic energy into potential energy. The extremely fine sand (included) provides minimal friction, thus allowing the pendulum to swing for periods of time. As the pendulum swings, it gently ¨writes¨ever changing geometric patterns in the sand. The patterns get bigger then smaller then bigger again as the arc of the pendulum also changes.

HISTORY

PENDULUM

A ¨pendulum mania¨ broke out, as foucault pendulo were displayed in many cities and attracted large crowds.

FOUCAULT´S

He suspended a pendulum on a 67-meter cord from the dome of The Panthéon in Paris that was free to swing in two dimensions. Once the pendulum was set in motion, the plane of swing was observed to precess or rotate 3600 clockwise in about 32 hours.

PENDULUM

In 1851, Jean-Bernard Léon Foucault showed that the plane of oscillation of a pendulum, like a gyroscope tends to stay constant regardless of the motion of the pivot, and that this could be used to demonstrate the rotation of the Earth.

HISTORY The storm glass was developed by Robert Fitzroy, captain of the HMS Beagle during its famous voyage with Charles Darwin. During the historic voyage, Fitzroy carefully documented how the storm glass would predict the weather. Later in life, Fitzroy was appointed chief of the newly formed British meteorological office. In 1859, violent storms struck the British Isles.

DISTRIBUTED STORM GLASSES, THEN KNOWN AS “FITZROY’S STORM BAROMETERS”, TO MANY SMALL FISHING COMMUNITIES AROUND THE BRITISH ISLES THAT WERE TO BE CONSULTED BY SHIPS AT PORT BEFORE SETTING SAIL. EACH STORM GLASS INCLUDED THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW:

The storm glass barometer came into general use in the early 1700's.

CRYSTALS FORM AS THE WEATHER CHANGES. USED BY SEAFARERS TO PREDICT STOR MS AT SEA .

A storm glass works on the principle that temperature and pressure affect solubility, sometimes resulting in clear liquid; other times causing precipitants to form. The method by which the storm glass works is not fully understood. Explanations include changes in barometric pressure, changes in temperature, and the effects of electricity across the glass.

HISTORY The Periodic Table of Elements is a Tabular method of displaying the chemical elements, first devised in 1863. The layout of the table has been refined and extended over time, as new elements have been discovered, and new theoretical models have been developed to explain chemical behaviour. The current standard table contains 117 confirmed elements as of late 2006 (while element 118 has been synthesised, element 117 has not).
