“I pay a lot of attention to detail, but I love to experiment with new things. I love colours and architectonic shapes. Contradictions always work. My handwriting is free and colourful. Designing patterns feels natural to me. I’m familiar with techniques from oil painting to serigraphy.”

Satu Maarenen the designer of Marimekko

TYPOGRAPHICAL PATTERNS The Patterns are made from my initials HW. The patterns are inspired by the ones seen in Islamic art in the Metropolitan museum of art. The letters are making patterns not only mechanically and accurately but also with organic movement. It creates a perfect chaos moment.

“Here, Earth-born, over the lilt of the water, Lisping its music and bearing a burden of light, Bosoming day as a laughing and radiant daughter… Here we may whisper unheard, unafraid of the night. Walking alone…was it splendor, or what, we were bound with? Deep in the time when summer lets down her hair? Shadows we loved and the patterns they covered the ground with Tapestries, mystical, faint in the breathless air.”

“There are only patterns, patterns on top of patterns, patterns that affect other patterns. Patterns hidden by patterns. If you watch close, history does nothing but repeat itself. What we call chaos is just patterns we haven’t recognized. What we call random is just patterns we can’t decipher. what we can’t understand we call nonsense. What we can’t read we call gibberish. There is no free will. There are no variables.”

PUNK POSTERS The posters inspired by the exhibition PUNK:Chaos to Couture. The concept of this project is “a perfect chaos. The posters are individual themselves and are also combined with images by using projector. What inspired me from the exhibition was a beautifulness in a chaotic moment and period in music.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

PUNK: Chaos to Couture The Met’s spring 2013 Costume Institute exhibition, PUNK: Chaos to Couture, will examine punk’s impact on high fashion from the movement’s birth in the early 1970s through its continuing influence today. Featuring approximately one hundred designs for men and women, the exhibition will include original punk garments and recent, directional fashion to illustrate how haute couture and ready-to-wear borrow punk’s visual symbols. Focusing on the relationship between the punk concept of “do-it-yourself” and the coutureconcept of “made-to-measure,” the seven galleries will be organized around the materials, techniques, and embellishments associated with the anti-establishment style. Themes will include New York and London, which will tell punk’s origin story as a tale of two cities, followed by Clothes for Heroes and four manifestations of the D.I.Y. aethetic—Hardware, Bricolage, Graffiti and Agitprop, and Destroy. Presented as an immersive multimedia, multisensory experience, the clothes will be animated with period music videos and soundscaping audio techniques.

The exhibition is made possible by Moda Operandi. Additional support is provided by Condé Nast.

Oh, my PUNK: Chaos to Couture! Heejeh Wi About 3 weeks ago, I visited the metropolitan museum of art for this exhibition. When I first heard about this year’s Met Gala, I was like “Oh, my god! I can’t wait to go to see the show!”. Since “PUNK” was my first love. I mean, my cultural first love. I remember when I first fall in love with punk culture. I was 13 years old. I collected Japanese punk fashion magazines from Japan. I was crazy about the legendary punk fashion brand “Vivienne Westwood”. It was like a worship for a teenage girl. And I’m still using my very first purse and also first purchased Vivienne West ‘s product since 2005. It was my pure passion that I really started to get into culture, spirit, beauty, music and art. That was the starting of my journey to the art life.

24

So I went to the show 3 weeks ago and I spent 2 hours for seeing and enjoying the show. Wow! I was so overwhelmed for everything in the show. Like the surrounding, the sound, every single things that I could see and feel. The show reminded me of my pure passion toward art, culture, rebellious spirit, the endless curiosity of the world. I couldn’t even stop mumbling “Oh, Wow.” How much I deeply got inspired by the show.

I felt I am very lucky that I could see this show. Now I study graphic design and I want to be a graphic designer and artist. However, fashion is one of the most important part of my life. I love where I live now which is New York city but Tokyo and London are my favorite cities so far. And I had lived in Tokyo and I went to art school there. Tokyo has its own deep punk culture as much as London. So it started from Vivienne Westwood to Yohji Yamatomo, Junya Watanabe, Alexander McQueen, Comme des Garcons, Givenchy, Chanel, Burberry and recent my favorite brand Maison Martin Margela. I could saw so all the beautifully made punk couture from each high-end brand. The couture is beyond being clothes. It is culture. It is all. Punk is punk. Punk is attitude. That we just shut our mouth and be overwhelmed wish those beautiful creatures. “Couture” means High fashion designing and dressmaking. PUNK x COUTURE collaboraton has an explosive power. Two contrast things that seem so far from each other, meet together by the maestros(talented genius fashion designers), I just had to admire the beautifulness.

4’ 33” John Cage’s “most famous and controversial creation”. By far the best-known of the many musical works that consist mainly of silence.

About four minutes thirty-three seconds of silence

6 VARIATIONS ON SILENCE This project is makng posters in six variations after listening to John Cage’s Four thirty-three. The music is highly conceptual and it is almost like a revolution. It made me think about a difference betweena possibility and impossibility. Also a boundary of old and new. My overall concept for the posters is “thinking out of the box”.

“When I hear what we call music, it seems to me that someone is talking. And talking about his feelings or about his ideas, of relationships. But when I hear traffic, the sound of traffic here on sixth avenue for instance, I don’t have the feeling that anyone is talking, I have the feeling that a sound is acting, and I love the activity of sound. What it does, is it gets louder and quieter, and it gets higher and lower. And it gets longer and shorter. I’m completely satisfied with that, I don’t need sound to talk to me. ” — John Cage
