Emanuel Viaumme & Andrew Von Oeyen Residential Remodel Malibu, California Von Oeyen Architects, 2013-2014 The proposed project is the construction of a 996 SF addition and interior remodeling of an existiong 2,734 SF, 1 story, 3 bedroom single family residence. The remodeling will impact less than 50% of the existing exterior wall and the additional new floor area constructino, located within the required side yard setbacks, will be under 1000 SF. The building height will continue to remain under 18 feet while the roof shape will be partially reconfigured and replaced with new roofing material. The existing "code compliant" septic system has been tested and is working and no additional plumbing fixture units are being proposed. Site work includes new and replaced wood decks and modest terrace adjustments and additions with permable paving. The driveway and north retaining wall will be replaced while the lower entry parking area will be replaced with permeable brick pavers. Then majority of the existing landscaping and site drainage area will remain as installed though reinforced with additional plant material.

Hiroshi Teshigahara Foundation for the Arts Faculty: Yo-ichiro Hakomori Landscape Design: Brendan Kempf Architecture Design: Jiahong He

Project Statement Shibuya is one of the dynamic cities which contain lots of different types of elements, such as commercial area, residential area and public space. They allow Shibuya numbers of possibilities. That is what basically Mr. Hiroshi Teshigahara's experiences did. The work of Hiroshi Teshigahara as a modernist film maker, bizen ceramicist, and Master of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana has had a profound influence on modern Japanese film and art, and the Sogetsu School of Ikebana. The Hiroshi Teshigahara Foundation for Art will become an important institution for scholarly research of his work, a living educational facility and gallery for the Sogetsu School of Ikebana, and will provide public gathering amenities for the general public. The concept of the scheme is creating an art village and trying to combine the architecture and landscape and the city. The project will seat on the existing parking garage. As people go up, they will reach a public space that 6 galleries are surrounded by landscape. The third floor would be a more private space that used for Ikebana classroom or music studio. Each of the bars on the third floor is facing specific scene of Shibuya. It might be the busy crossing or high speed rail road or peaceful Yoyogi Park. The idea behind is that borrowing views from the city as the background of the exhibits. The facade of the bars will use polycarbonate, which will change from opacity to transparent according to the angel of sunlight, and the outside of supporting structures are stainless steel which will reflect the landscape and surrounding buildings. It seems that the light and transparent bars are floating on the city.

Hidden Theater Theater Design in Huang Hua Gang Location: Guangzhou, China

Project Statement

Concept Process Diagram

The site is located in Huang Hua Gang area, Xian Lie Rd, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou. There were an old theater and a shopping mall. However, the old theater could no more satisfy the modern lives. The Guangzhou government decides to build a new theater in the old site. There is a 72 Martyrs Monument of Huang Hua Gang located to the north of the site, in memory of the martyrs of 1911. In addition, it is surrounded by types of buildings for residential, commercial and public institutional use. They provide the site multi-activities. The scheme is about ‘HIDDEN’. The theater is divided to three parts and then transforms them as continuous slopes according to the existing hilly topography, in order to break up the whole into parts. Meanwhile, lots of activities could be taken place on the roof of the theater.

Activities

The context determines its character. Firstly, it should respect the monument; keep the horizon sign and solemn atmosphere. Secondly, it should provide spaces of different activities and recreations for the residents around the place. Last but not least, it should try to make use of the slopes in the existing hilly topography.

Axis

The 72 Martyrs Monument of Huang Hua Gang, which is located to the north of the site, is a memorable landmark of Guangzhou. The residents around the site hope to have spaces for different activities and recreations.

As placing on the axis of monument, the theater might not destroy the horizon sign and solemn atmosphere of it.

Shopping Terrace Shopping Center Renovation Design Location: Guangzhou, China

Project Statement

Analysis Context

It is a renovation design of a shopping center, which is located in the CBD of Tian He, Guangzhou. The shopping center is adjacent to Tian He Sports Stadium and aother large shopping mall, which means the shopping center might be a place for both shopping and leisure activities. Then, the idea of ‘TERRACE’ appears. Terrace is one of the most efficient uses of the limited farm land in the Southwest China. Similarly, it provides the shopping center the maximum time and space for the combination of shopping and other activities. Furthermore, since Guangzhou stays rainy and sunny, the traditional arcade could provide a more comfortable environment for shopping and other activities. Consequently, the shopping center might develop to an open and ecological one.
