PAPER CAFE CROCKERY DESIGN PROJECT DIPLOMA PROJECT - 2016

As part of IICD curriculum, all final year students are required to undertake a Diploma project which is a full scale design project in the field. The diploma project which is expected to be of four months in duration. It provides a Platform for an independent and a client wherein the student is expected to generate a professional design assignment with application and implementation capabilities. The project exposes the student to a real life situation of working in an industry or a studio and function under the constraints and limitations of an organization. It involves understanding the strength and infrastructure of the organization, their design sensibilities and providing an appropriate solution within the practical parameters of constraint, time, economic viability and innovation. A student undertaking a diploma project imbibes a real life experience to gain understanding of the role of a designer, which in practice is not only restricted to just design but includes time management, communication skills, efficient handling of practical constraints and pitching one’s design idea to concern people at the organization. The diploma project is an excellent platform for the students to help them realize their strength and weaknesses before entering the professional world of design.

I aimed to strike right balance between the work and emotions and at the same time come up with something that was original. So far, the work i have been doing has given me strength to go on and find solutions for all the hardships and come up with a good satisfactory result.

EXPERTISE ARCHITECTURE

CURATORIAL INTERIOR DESIGN CONSULTANCY

They are principally an architecture practice and believe in its dominance over all other primary as well as secondary services they can provide, architecture being the primordial contextual intervention creating a definitive environment for most projects and setting the tone for every other intervention. Their architecture is a passionate endeavour towards a sustain ably built bespoke response, primarily to the environment, micro and macro, then to the site, the programme and the end user; thus creating a functional fidelity resulting in an ecologically responsible architecture.

They provide a unique singular ‘only selection’ service, selecting and sourcing of project needs like construction materials, interior furniture, fixtures and equipment, etc. on a per day lumps charge.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN They take pride in trying to create constructed landscapes with a high degree of sensitivity to achieve a minimally intrusive system that could resemble; and eventually transform into natural systems, indigenising it for native flora and fauna. Where possible they try and restore depleted environments with a diligent loyalty to its natural heritage value. These habitats they modestly hope would eventually become parts of a whole in future eco systems and biomes. Collaboration with naturalists, ecologists and constantly imbibing a sense of delicacy that is immanent in nature, they try and built natural environments for human consumption, but which are in harmony with nature and are a source of beauty, peace and inspiration.

STUDIO OVERVIEW Decadence began 10 years ago as a modest exhibition of Vintage/antique furniture and curios. Eventually their love for wood led them to venture into designing and the craft of wooden furniture. It has taken that many years of diligence for it to mature into an enterprise offering complete furniture solutions in fine timber. FURNITURE BUILDING, CRAFTSMANSHIP AND FINISHES The final designs thus evolve into solutions that are simple to use with minimal waste and can translate into effective yet basic construction and engineering resolutions. Here the beauty of traditional techniques and craftsmanship is brought to the fore with old fashioned dovetails, tongue and groove, mitres and the like - used as effective construction tools as well as design elements. Also of additional concern is their dislike for synthetic finishes for their pieces, so they try as far as possible to use natural oils or colours. They like to think that their pieces thus crafted would become heirlooms to be passed on over generations.

CUSTOM FURNITURE They are happy to create bespoke furniture and interior solutions for all site specific requirements. All our existing designs could be modified to suit individual needs. DECADENCE ANTIQUES AND VINTAGE FURNITURE The singular antique and vintage collection in decadence has emerged out of an obsessive, painstaking and unending journey; of scavenging, collecting, and hoarding over the past 20 odd years. Some of their stuff has been with them for even longer and they cherish a piece for the fact that we are yet to see a similar one, and what’s more may not come across once again. They duly but humbly expect their patrons to have a similar sensibility and a warm appreciation of carrying back with them a piece of history which has more to offer in its intrinsic worth than just a crude assessment of its monetary value. REPRODUCTIONS AND RESTORATION

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT AND RESOLUTION There is a constant effort towards new design developments where the focus is chiefly on creating new furniture concepts - new ideas of utility and beauty. The progression from concept to resolution aims at a design aesthetic that works as a unique style and harmonies with details, joinery and the inherent nature of timber.

They offer good quality timber reproductions of vintage / antique furniture designs or any unique design you might want to create. They also offer restoration services for customer’s prized furniture and antiques.

MATERIAL SOURCING Our environment /sustainability concern makes them focus on recycled timber as their primary source of furniture building which has the added advantage of being finely seasoned. Given the fact that most of the old wood available in and around Vadodara is either Burma or Valsadi teak most of our new furniture uses teak which works well for reproductions also. In case of new timber, we try their best to source out sustain ably harvested lumber.

They offer Architecture, Interior and Landscape services.Customer’s could call or email them for pricing details or visit us to see the designs.

VISION AND MISSION

THINK Pastiwala is a call-out used for waste paper collectors in Gujarat, India. In a sector that is traditionally dominated by waste paper collectors located at nook and corners, Pastiwala lets you breathe in the fresh air. Pastiwala is the first ever organized waste paper collector in India. A CRISIL recognized and rated organization, it is located in the city of Vadodara in Gujarat. It is under the thought provoking leadership of Mr. Paresh Parekh that this inspiring project took off in the year 2010. Over the past 3 years many people have opted for the Pastiwala way of waste paper disposal. Slowly directing the waste paper generated in the country towards the recycle process. In this way, contributing to handover a sustainable earth to the future generations.

BELIVE in your world To see things change around you, your belief in change is just the starting point. If you have given the deteriorating pattern of earth-life a thought, you might be interested in improving it too, aren’t you? Paper - Trees - Ecological balance. That is the route they have taken. They take doable steps, by collecting paper from both industries and households, recycling it and bringing it back into use. Instead of cutting more trees for paper, why not help conserve the greens? They believe, together they can reconstruct the earth. The first step in asserting this belief is by contributing waste paper for recycle.

How many Pastiwalas are out there, on the street? The Pastiwala team comprises of contributors who share the company ideology, and work towards it. There are 25 three wheelers, 10 four wheelers Tata Ace, 20 big trucks (as part of Sort India Transport) that support the tasks. ACT TO RECREATE They want people spend less time thinking and more time on acting how to restore our earth. Let the thoughts people have, be a part of reality. Collect and recycle waste paper to save cutting down of trees. They are on this for over three years now. And in this span, look what has grown - For every 20,000 metric tonnes, 3,40,000 trees are saved. In the last 3 years, 10,20,000 trees were saved under this initiative. Restoring the Environment Pastiwala has been vigilant of the environment impact over the course of collecting and recycling waste paper. This mainly includes • Saving carbon emission • Efficient transport of waste • Collection & recycle of 20,000 metric tonnes of paper and cardboard per year • 70% less energy consumption in recycling paper vis-avis making it from raw materials Encouraging the social system There have been many individuals who have contributed to the organised waste paper collection method. Owing to the organised ways, waste paper collectors have experienced a social and economic improvement. • An addition of approximately 500 unskilled workers in the

social & economic system • Payment of salary through bank accounts • Improved wages, worker welfare & insurance • Generating credibility through ID proof for the team Integrating technology Pastiwala utilises technology in the form of electronic weighing scale, GPS and Driver Tracking Devices, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Systems, Google Maps - Earth and other hand held devices for waste paper collection. The integration of technology in collecting waste paper has helped tremendously in streamlining this process. Also, first time steps like making calls for paper collection, collating user data, information on location of Pastiwala tempo add immense value to this organized collection system. EUROPE In the 17th century, coffee appeared for the first time in Europe outside the Ottoman Empire, and coffeehouses were established and quickly became popular. From 1670 to 1685, the number of London coffee-houses began to multiply, & also began to gain political importance due to their popularity as places of debate.

In the second half of the 18th century the coffee houses were great social levellers, open to all men and indifferent to social status, and as a result associated with equality and republicanism. More generally, coffee houses became meeting places where business could be carried on, news exchanged and the London Gazette (government announcements) read. The banning of women from coffeehouses was not universal, but does appear to have been common in Europe. In the 19th and 20th century, coffeehouses were commonly meeting point for writers and artists, across Europe. In most European countries, such as Austria, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, and others, the term cafĂŠ means a restaurant primarily serving coffee as well as pastries such as cakes, tarts, pies, Danish pastries, or buns.

UNITED STATES COFFEE SHOP Coffee shops in the United States arose from the espresso- and pastrycentered Italian coffeehouses. From the late 1950s onward, coffeehouses also served as a venue for entertainment, most commonly folk performers during the American folk music revival. This was likely due to the ease at accommodating in a small space a lone performer accompanying himself or herself with only a guitar. with these coffeehouses.

MIDDLE-EAST In the Middle East, the coffeehouse serves as an important social gathering place for men. Men assemble in coffeehouses to drink coffee (usually Arabic coffee) and tea. In addition, men go there to listen to music, read books, play chess and backgammon, watch TV and enjoy other social activities around the Arab world and in Turkey. Hookah (shisha) is traditionally served as well. Coffeehouses in Egypt are colloquially called qahwah (literally ‘coffee’). .The first ‘ahwah opened around the 1850s and were originally patronized mostly by older people, with youths frequenting but not always ordering. In the early 20th century, some of them became crucial venues for political and social debates. Coffeehouse in Damascus

EGYPT & ETHIOPIA In Cairo, the capital of Egypt, most cafĂŠs have shisha (waterpipe). Most Egyptians indulge in the habit of smoking shisha while hanging out at the cafĂŠ, watching a match, studying, or even sometimes finishing some work. A coffee shop in Angeles City, Philippines

In China, an abundance of recently started domestic coffeehouse chains may be seen accommodating business people for conspicuous consumption, with coffee prices are sometimes even higher than in the West.

In India, coffee culture has expanded in the past twenty years. Cafes are considered good venues to conduct office meetings and for friends to meet. The India Coffee House chain was started by the Coffee Cess Committee in 1936, when the first outlet was opened in Bombay.

EXPRESSO BARS The espresso bar is a type of coffeehouse that specializes in coffee beverages made from espresso. In the traditional Italian bar, customers either order at the bar and consume their beverages standing or, if they wish to sit down and be served, are usually charged a higher price. In some bars there is an additional charge for drinks served at an outside table. In other countries, especially the United States, seating areas for customers to relax and work are provided free of charge. Some espresso bars also sell coffee paraphernalia, candy, and even music. North American espresso bars were also at the forefront of widespread adoption of public WiFi access points to provide Internet services to people doing work on laptop computers on the premises.

TYPES OF CAFES

The Grab-and-Go Cafe

1

Most of the Star bucks you see along the side of the freeway are just drive-thru huts with a few chairs inside. That is to say, there’s not much of a “life” to the cafe. Even the people inside are just sitting for a minute. Otherwise, it’s just a “Grab-and-Go” kind of cafe. The Restaurant

2 What makes a go od coffee shop? Coffee, most obviously, but that’s not all. I know how to make good coffee at home. I go to the coffee shop for the atmosphere and

The Hipster Hangout

3

the convenience. I’ve gone to an awful lot of coffee shops over the years, and I’ve noticed a few trends

The word “cafe” has a wide range if meanings. It can mean everything from a coffee house to a diner to a fancy bistro. So when you see a business with the word “cafe” in its name, you never quite know what to expect. Still, the restaurant/cafe can be a good place to go.

This is a place where you can walk in the door, because they look like the Apple Store: brightly lit and sparsely furnished, industrial chic, garage style, with unfinished walls, the coffee’s good and the wifi’s fast in such places. The Corporate Store

4

When you hear “corporate store”, you’re probably thinking Star bucks. This is partially true, but there are plenty of indie cafes in the category as well. These types of stores are more colourful and homey than the hipster hangouts, but everything looks just a little too polished. Still, the coffee is decent enough, and depending on your location, these corporate stores can be great for people-watching, as they draw a wide variety of people. The Old House

5

The coffee shop is made from an old house, opened up with big windows and brightly painted walls. On the lawn there are picnic tables and umbrellas for shade. The best coffee shops feel like home, they may even be made from an old home. A place that feels comfortable, where we can meet other people who are comfortable as well. As long as the coffee is good.

CLIENT CUSTOMIZATION

The feeling of liking is very subjective. We do not always agree on our likes, do we? But can we create something that can be perceived differently by everyone ? By making the crockery in a way that it looks different from one view or position that might look different to someone else sitting on a different side and the same thing happening to a person at a particular distance. So appearance of the crockery will depend on their position and distance.

I started generating forms out of geometric shapes trying to take out the geometric character of paper by filleting and chamfering the edges, cutting down the sides or top and bottom in a manner that gives me a new form. While creating these forms I asked myself whether it really appeals me?

Carrying the same thought I visited the campus saw paper waste , piles and piles of newspapers, folded, crushed, properly arranged which really appealed me.

I started my Exploration on crushed effect in the smallest of plastic glasses. Plastic gave me crushes as well as textures which I did not want. I just wanted the crushes to be seen. Further I started exploring the paper glasses of maximum size available at the market.

The above forms created were not selected due to the sharp edges and undercuts which further cannot be moulded using only a single pull mold. DEFINITION OF UNDERCUT: Any indentation or protrusion in a shape that will prevent its withdrawal from a onepiece mold.

FINAL FORMS

The selection of these forms were done on the following basis: • Mold can be created • The effect is balanced , visually appealing & functional • Both high and low crush effects can be explored

The idea was to create indirect form of letter P as handle for the PAPER CAFE. Keeping the overall form angular I further thought of making the edges a bit round during the stage of finishing.

When it comes to designing a handle all that came to my mind was comfort with aesthetics. I wanted the form to be very unique at the same time was pretty occupied with the thought of keeping it comfortable. Even the handle has to look like a crushed paper. The crushed effect that comes with these paper cups are the best so I cut them down to different sizes that are appropriate for an handle and started exploring the crushed forms.

PLATTER

Initially when I started exploring platter forms I was trying to create the same crushed effect. Usually the upper surface of platter is more visible than the bottom so i tried creating very minor crush effects on the upper surface.

This experiment did not come out well because when the POP was poured the model became uneven and thin that it was breaking.

ROUND FORMS I decided to use Folds for creating new forms of platter. Very simple folds would give the platter a feel of paper itself. I started exploring the round forms as round is always preferred for daily use.

78

HEER PATEL

PAPER CAFE CROCKERY DESIGN PROJECT DIPLOMA PROJECT - 2016

Then I realized that if I create rectangular and square forms it will be an value addition. When a fine folded platter will be kept on the table it will actually look like a paper is lying on the table. so I further moved on and explored these forms more.

MATERIAL RESEARCH WAX SHEET I wanted to create a direct model for the platter on following basis: • The material should be strong • Flexible and foldable • Stable This research was done for the above requirements As I went to the market the sheet was not an appropriate option.

ALUMINIUM SHEET After that i used aluminium sheet . I took thin 3 gauge sheet so that it can be folded easily. But as a model it was very thin so then i doubled the same sheet joined it and then i created all the folds that i wanted. I could not get my model but i got an idea of the size and the folds . I could visualize how my platter would look physically.

82

Few of the forms that could be made functionally were selected and created on the Aluminium metal sheet with 1mm gauge.

PLATTER MODEL

As the minute details such as side walls and foot ring cannot be made on the sheet I directly applied it on the final model design. Here few changes were made in the final form, one end that seemed very fragile was changed and i kept the fold symmetrical so that it stays stable.

BOWL

The technique i used for creating crushed bowl . • I took a mold of a plain round form • Then crushed the Cartridge sheet and placed it on the walls of the mold leaving the bottom as it is • Poured POP Initially few forms that were created were interesting but the effect was not achieved properly so then • I cut the paper cups from its joint crushed them and used them on the side walls. As the paper used for making paper cups gave me a much better effect than any other.

PROBLEM FACED WHILE CASTING PROBLEM • The platter is flat and thin and it can be taken out with help of ramp press machine which at the industry is not available. • Due to that the platter is getting cracked from various places. • It is solid casting so the air has to properly come out and it has to be filled in all the areas evenly. but here the bottom and the above part seem different from the middle.

SOLUTION • To create a ramp press mold of the platter.

DIP

DIP I created the dip for the platter as a value addition product. As the platter can be used for various purpose . When there is the need of dip it can be used. The platter can be both used as chip and dip and even for the routine food items that do not require the dip.

PAPER TUBES

These paper tubes are collected by our client pastiwala.com as a paper waste from surat. They come from a thread manufacturing industry. The tubes are used for wrapping these threads around and sell them in a bulk. The tubes are thick, cardboards machine made on which a thin layer of colourful paper is applied. These colourful papers give the tubes an interesting playful look.

I created these basic human figures after studying the activities done by the people at the cafes. These are created in stoneware initially for the explorations. The final pieces will be created in PAPER CLAY. These humans will be placed in such a paper ring. So this ring is used as a frame and different artefacts on a similar theme will be placed on the frame itself.

R E F L E C T I O N S

I will be very honest and share some insights and experiences with you before wrapping it up. The project did start with a surge of excitement for innovation. Everyone knows, success does not come easy way obviously there are pros and cons of being a product designer. The whole ideation part went quiet difficult without any facilities or infrastructure for creating mock ups. I never realized the clock ticking besides me day and night. There was a phase after ideation that I had to search a place for producing my samples. There was a very devastating situation that due to some reasons the manufacturers were not ready to produce the designs as they were running busy. I managed to get a industry in the outskirts who were ready to produce my products. After that the worked went on smoothly. This project helped me realise my true potential. It made me realise of an ability that sets me apart from the rest, which is I could capture ideas from unexpected disciplines and then blend them into the sector of crockery to create interesting product that did not strike me before. I think I will definitely cherish and capitalize on some of the new learning’s and will always keep my door open waiting for another opportunities to work on such interesting projects in future.
