CONCEPT JH

Concept JH _ Interior / Interaction for Autonomous Car Project Theme To give exciting and playful experiences for teens in autonomous vehicles, we design an interaction of car interior design among users, seats, and interface.

1

CONCEPT JH

Market Research 1. Autonomous Car Market As we can see many positive prospects on autonomous car market, it is an eventuality, of course. Who does it better and first is the question. Therefore, we have done many researches on this market, technology, and target group for our new concept car for the market in next 10 years. What future trends are carmakers looking at? “Autonomous driving is an eventuality, of course. Who does it first is the question. I also think there will be far more use-appropriate products as we go into the future. You will have less of the kind of car that does everything for everyone, and you’ll have more specific-use vehicles out there. VW has just launched the latest version of the minivan bus called the California that was prolific in the 60s. It’s a specific product for people who want to enjoy camping in their car. The diversity of product within the automotive sector is absolutely unbelievable. ” By Marek Reichman, Chief Creative Officer of Aston Martin and a Design Council trustee

According to this reliable interview, there must be more specifi-use vehicles in the near future such as commuting vehicles for office workers or hiring vehicles for teens on sports days out. So, it is predictable to have specific vehicles on special purposes. 2. Technology - Platooning This is a new technology for linking vehicles into one line, when they are headed to same destination. Simply, platooning takes cues from the vehicle just in front of it. The vehicle also communicates directly with the leader in order to anticipate any turns or braking action. This is also ideal for groups who are meeting up with other groups. It enables people to meet up on route, rather than travelling to a meet point which adds to the journey time.

Market Research 3. Target group - Z Generation Our target group is Z generation in marketing term. They are a group of teenagers born in 1995-2009. They are very familiar with new technology, because they have been using smartphones, tablets, laptops from young ages. Also, they are fast-movers. Accustomed to auto-correct and emoticons, Gen Z prefers visuals to text. Of course, they are always with social media, such as Facebook and Instagram. However, a quarter of them left Facebook in 2014, because of the lack of privacy. Instead of Facebook, they chose Snapchat which gives them private and secret experiences among themselves. source: Meet Generation Z : Forget Everything You Learned About Millennials, by Sparks & Honey

Through research on teenagers, we could understand and consider more about our target group when we thought of ideas about our concept.

Project Brief Our main users for the Driverless car is Teens and Meets, with the concept which is ‘Jeckle and Hyde’. This concept reflects the ever changing emotions of teenagers as they go through adolescent and their varying needs. Our aim was to provide an interior which would occupy children on long journeys and avoid the common repeated question “Are we there yet!!” Our interior design is based on market research, latest technological advancement and on recent academic research looking into the emotional response of design, thus ensuring teenagers and children feel comfortable, secure and entertained away from their parents. Our main key part of the product is the interface which provides multiple functions, such as video calling from parents, interactive musical games and individual entertainment. The interface is divided into sections and attached to the chair, but also connect to the central extruding table to provide group entertainment.

These are the nine user scenarios to understand the detailed contexts of our users. We analyzed the user experiences into specific user journeys from when parents hire the autonomous vehicle for children to go on sports days out to when children are on the vehicles enjoying the journey in the car, not bored. By considering these all contexts, we designed an interaction for car interior design among users, table interfaces, and seats, inspired by Jekyll and Hyde.

11

CONCEPT JH

Concept Jekyll & Hyde

Based on user research, we found out that teenagers are changeable and capricious, because they are in the period of adolescent. It reminded of Jekyll and Hyde, who has two different natures in him. Also, we could think of aesthetic form of high contrast between concave and convex. It has long been recognised in the car industry that the exterior shape and design of a car can provoke subconscious response in buyer preference. We decided to take a similar approach with designing our interior. It been found that curved shapes produce a positive emotional response. A research paper by Alejandro Salgado-Montejo and Charles Spence et al (2015) titled ‘Smiles over Frowns: When Curved Lines Influence Product Preference’, published in Psychology and Marketing journal found that products which featured concave (smile like) curves where more appealing. They tested, convex curves (frown-like shape) and straight/angular shapes accross various products and in different countries. They evaluated the products on visual analogue scales and forced decision tasks and found people favoured concave lines. 12

CONCEPT JH

Form Research These findings are supported by earlier research. An article published in Environment and Behaviour Journal in 2012 titled ‘Furniture Forms And Their Influence On Our Emotional Response to Interior Environments’ found curvilinear forms (curved shapes) resulted in significantly stronger pleasure rating than rectangular shapes and forms. The researchers tested 111 participates pleasure and approach reactions. They found curved settings provoked higher amounts of positive pleasure-unarousing emotions (e.g feeling relaxed, peaceful and calm). An ability to provoke such positive emotions in our interior is key, particularly for children and teenagers. We therefore designed our interior with organic curves shapes where possible, to help the children feel more secure whilst traveling alone. Our chair has a curved design so the user feels comforted and secure whilst travelling.

Seat Design Feature_01 Private Mode Inspired by Jekyll Teens also need time by themselves to relax, especially after sports days out. So, the seat design gives private and comfortable experiences to users with sleek lines and personal sound system. 13

CONCEPT JH

User Test for Seat Design

14

CONCEPT JH

Seat Design Feature_02 Social Mode Inspired by Hyde Teens are likely to play together when they are hyper, excited and friendly. So, four seats can be rotated to confront one another and give users interactive and playful experiences with table interfaces. The interfaces are assembled into one big table, so that teens can experience our two main features of interaction: music and match game.

15

CONCEPT JH

Graphic Interface The digital Interface is designed to provide a multitude of functions. It provides an entertainment facility, both for the individual group as it is divided into sections. This is a key feature, through questionnaires of parents the chose both group and individual activities. It allows the parents to call in if necessary, which the teenager cannot refuse. This provides the parents with an added sense of security. Two key element of the digital interface are music and match game. Music

Match Game

This interaction can be played in one big touch screen, which is assembled by four table interfaces. Basically, users can tap, drag, and push these playful graphics to make sound beats on top of the original music. They can also download and share the music which they play onto Facebook or Snapchat. This will give them special experiences to enjoy their journey on vehicles.

This is a match game interface for teenagers to prepare for their sports games. Users can choose the type of sports, like football, baseball, basketball, and plan their game by playing this interface before the actual game.
