Story by Kerstin Nyberg Peart Photography by Barry Peart BALULE - It was clear from the start that this was going to be an interview with a difference. When we arrived at Sharon Haussmann’s house, she was waiting next to her (personalised) Land Rover, ready to take us out on a game drive and to talk about her new role as the Chairperson of Balule Private Nature Reserve, with all its responsibilities and challenges. With the Chairperson herself at the wheel, we set off into Balule. Before being elected as its chair, Sharon served on the Reserve’s committee for three years, but her association with Balule goes back much further. Her father bought land on the reserve 50 years ago so she has known it all her life, and for the past eight years she’s been a permanent resident. The reserve is not only very large – at the moment 52 000 ha and expanding – but it also has a very complex management structure. Sharon describes it as a federal system: there are 12 regions which all have different ownership models, from 21 ha plots to big farms, shareblocks and community land. All the regions are represented on the committee which she now chairs. Everyone on the committee participates on a voluntary basis; volunteers are driven by passion and commitment and not just ‘doing their jobs’. Conservation is in itself an emotive field, and Sharon says it is remarkable to get so many people functioning together, although the challenges in the fast changing environment are enormous. Sharon sees as her function not only to keep things together but also to ensure good governance. She represents Balule both within the context of APNR and the Greater Kruger, and she enjoys being part of the bigger picture. A project which she is particularly proud of, and

which is about to come into fruition, is a cooperrative agreement between South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique on best practice in conservation. The project has been driven by the Kruger National Park, and after three years of hard work the agreement will be signed on December 5th. As we drive through the parched reserve, the discussion inevitably turns to the poaching crisis. Sharon says that this fight is all-consuming – there is little energy,
and few resources, left for anything else. The anti-poaching activities on Balule are multi-layered, and constantly growing to cope with the threat. In what Sharon describes as ‘progressive conservation’ Balule has partnered with a German IT company, Hemmersbach, in the form of a biobank for frozen sperm or oocytes harvested from rhinos killed by poachers. If the vet can get to the carcass within 48 hours, the cells are still viable and can be frozen in liquid nitrogen. This project has
its own dedicated laboratory, with a vet present most of the time, saving valuable genetic material for the future. Sharon is proud of the success achieved by Balule. It is a relatively new reserve, and parts of it were still subsistence farms less than 15 years ago. It is an emerging tourist destination which can offer as much as any of the big names in the field, and new lodges are being established. In contrast with other reserves Balule has no airstrip, so all tourism comes via
Hoedspruit, benefiting also the town and local communities directly. We stop for sundowners, near to where a Verreaux’s eagle owl has its nest. Sharon has been watching the chick from day one, and shows an almost maternal pride when the chick decides to take this moment to flap its wings, as if wanting to show us how big and brave it is. The joys of living close to nature certainly outweigh all the problems and challenges.

HOEDSPRUIT - Don’t let the title of David Bristow’s new book deceive you: “The Game Ranger, the Knife, the Lion and the Sheep” is not yet another collection of rangers’ reminiscences. Some game rangers do feature among the eclectic collection who populate the book, but the scope of the stories is far wider than that. After trying on different careers, including architecture, journalism and environmental sciences, David Bristow has settled for what he always wanted to do: write stories about southern Africa. The first book in his series Stories from the Veld is ‘Running Wild: the Story of Zulu, an African Stallion’, and The Game Ranger is his second. His writing is light hearted and often very funny, hiding the amount of research which must have gone into producing so much new information about so many different subjects. The ‘curious characters’ which the title refers to are as varied as can be; some are household names like David Livingstone and James Stevenson Hamilton, while others are little known, but no less interesting. They represent different eras, and different walks of life. The game ranger which the title refers to is Harry Wol-
huter; other characters from a similar background are the already mentioned StevensonHamilton, and the less well known Anthony Hall-Martin, who played a pivotal role in the re-establishment of Addo Elephant Park. The chapter about Anthony Hall-Martin includes a very touching story. Both Anthony and his wife Catherine worked in Addo, and when their daughter was born Anthony decided to introduce her to an old female elephant which they knew well. The elephant sniffed and caressed the baby, went off into the bush and returned a moment later with her own newborn calf. The early history of South Africa is the topic of several of the stories, and as David Bristow points out, he can now tell the early history free from the restraints that were in place when he himself first learnt it at school. Several stories cover the early years in the Cape Colony, including that of Maria Mouton, a woman who was executed for murder together with her slave lover and his accomplice. The story goes in some detail into the various execution methods of the time and is not for the faint-hearted! Individuals like Raymond Dart and Robert Broom, palaeoanthropologists who put South Africa on the world map
as the centre of search for human ancestors, are included, but their stories are given new interest by bringing in their less known associates, Adrian Boshier and James Kitching. Boshier was a UK-born eccentric who lived as a vagrant shaman, and whose knowledge of the veld opened up a new world for Dart; Kitching possibly the most skilled and prolific fossil hunter that ever lived who helped Broom prove that Africa had once been connected with Antarctica. David Bristow makes history come to life and the book is full of new takes on old stories. Read the chapter about James Stevenson Hamilton for yourself, and discover a different version of how the Kruger National Park got its name!

Thulani Nghonyama ACORNHOEK – October 24 marked the Grand Opening of Acornhoek Mall, a milestone in the history of the rural region. The mall serves a densely populated rural area consisting of no less than 97 000

The mall has also provided numerous jobs for locals on various levels, from management positions to sales and cleaning jobs. There was great excitement as thousands of mall goers queued to enter the new Game store. A resident in the queue told Kruger2Canyon: ‘The opening of this mall has helped us a lot because we used to travel a long distance to go shopping in places like Hazyview and Nelspruit.’ ‘We thank God for this benefit to our local area,’ he added. The mall is home to most of the shops and banks you would find in a large mall in South Africa. The attractive mall has received much praise, in particular for the lengths that management and organisers have gone to in order to support local.
KATHMANDU - The Trek for Big Cats expedition team arrived in Kathmandu on 30 October, and dived straight into a very successful press conference with a large group of local Nepalese and Kathmandu television and media representatives. Mohan Lamsal from Makalu Adventures very kindly hosted the event, helping us to create huge exposure for our cause. The team members in their lion, leopard and tiger costumes walked around the busy touristic Thamel region of Kathmandu, and raised more awareness for our expedition and campaign. We brought the city centre to a complete standstill, and we even needed the assistance of traffic police as we brought traffic to a grinding halt with our big beautiful mascots. Every person - young or old, tourist or local - wanted to touch the mascots, take a photograph or selfie, and find out what we were doing! At present the team is in Phakding, on the first night of the Everest Base Camp Trek. Our first day on the trek was incredibly beautiful and very successful in raising awareness for our cause! As we had imagined, the mascots caused a huge stir on the trail. The Trek for Big Cats team has been blown away by the support we have been given by the public and media, and the number of people who have been willing to support us. Keep up with the cats on our website and social media pages, as listed below, and
help us to spread our global message of creating awareness for the world’s iconic and endangered big cats!

Hoedspruit Eisteddfod On the road to recovery ~It takes a village to raise a child~
Karen Randal HOEDSPRUIT - Yearly, Hoedspruit hosts its own Eisteddfod in five different categories – English drama, Afrikaans drama, Music, Dance and Art. This year our Eisteddfod was concluded with an amazing showcase of all the talent. We
have been blessed with the most amazing adjudicators the past two years, with positive feedback and praise for the talent in our town. Children from our community participate, learn, have fun and perform. As you can imagine, it takes a lot of effort to organise a successful Eisteddfod, which re-
quires dedicated, culture-loving people, who all work on a voluntary basis. We need more helpers. If you love culture and would like to get involved, please email hoedspruiteisteddfod@gmail.com. Many hands make lighter work. Help us to grow our children in our community.
TRE to the rural communities where people have little access to mental health facilities. In a pilot project, Hlokomela in Hoedspruit hosted eight training days where participants, selected by three NGOs, learnt how the body responds to stress and trauma and how to alleviate the symptoms. These NGOs, Hlokomela, CHoiCe Trust and Anova Health Institute, have been working with TRE for a number of years and have seen such positive results that they decided to support this project. Funding was, as always, a difficulty and the costs the NGOs could not cover were raised through private and corporate sponsoring. The participants soon felt the benefits of TRE on their own bodies and thoroughly enjoyed the course days. There was a wonderful sense of connection in the group and attendance was almost perfect. The feedback has been astonishing as
most participants reported improvements in sleep, anxiety, irritability, digestion, aches and pains and energy levels after six months of practicing TRE. Equipped with donated yoga mats and blankets these new TRE Community Facilitators will go out and facilitate TRE with people who have experienced some form of trauma, and teach it to as many people as possible as a self-help tool to support them in coping with their life circumstances. The pilot was a resounding success and the course will be repeated next year, spreading TRE further in our communities to counteract the effects of trauma and stress, improving the mental and physical health of the population. LIFE - In the past two years our family has faced yet another cancer relapse, many close to death traumas, and in September this year, a second stem cell transplant. My first cancer diagnosis
ing community meant that we received a phenomenal amount of support. I endured many different chemotherapy treatment plans, some of which worked, but the cancer returned within a few weeks. Some of them failed and the cancer continued to spread.
came in 2010 when our sons, Joshua and Oliver, were just three years and five months old respectively. We were working in Balule but sadly were forced to move to the big city to be close to a specialist as the cancer was already advanced. After years of treatment, I was declared in remission and we moved back to our beloved Hoedspruit in 2013. When the disease returned in 2016, we were devastated. This fight, though, was very different. Being members of this amaz-
I needed a stem cell transplant but by December last year the disease had spread from my lymph system right into my lungs, bones and heart, and I had chronic liver failure; the plans for a transplant were cancelled. The only option to save my life was experimental immunotherapy drugs designed to encourage your own immune system to fight cancer cells. Luckily for me, this drug worked beautifully and once again I was a candidate for

HOEDSPRUIT - Sixteen nompilos (community health workers), peer educators, homebased carers and community workers from the Hoedspruit, Phalaborwa and Tzaneen areas were trained as TRE Community Facilitators. TRE (Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises) is a method to help release tension stored in the body due to stress, anxiety and trauma. TRE can be used in crises and after accidents as emergency interventions, but is mainly taught as a self-help tool with the aim of bringing the body and mind back into balance, thereby improving overall health. Over a period of six months Dr. Erika Coertzen, a doctor of integrative medicine from Tzaneen, trained participants, culminating in a graduation celebration on 4 October 2018 at Hlokomela. It has long been Dr. Erika Coertzen’s dream to spread
transplant. After an extensive world-wide search for a suitable tissue type match, we found one in Germany. Everything was moving forward and I was scheduled to go into hospital in August this year, when at the last minute, two weeks before transplant day, my donor backed out. Our hearts were broken and my future once again uncertain. Just two weeks later I got the most beautiful phone call. Another donor had been found in Germany, not a perfect match but my doctor was confident it was ‘good enough’. The best part? The donor was a young woman, only nineteen years old and so excited for the opportunity to save a life that she made herself available immediately. All her tests and medical checks were fast tracked, she was in excellent health and I was admitted into the isolation ward at Pretoria East Hospital in September. The transplant process is the most gruelling test of mind and body strength because not only is your body being hammered by the extremely high dose chemotherapy, you are also kept in isolation for four weeks as you have no immune system. Taking a shower felt like running a marathon and I was fed through a tube during the worst days. The hardest part was being away from my family. I was not allowed any physical contact with my boys, but they were my biggest motivation, my reason to wake up every morning and smile, knowing that I could and would pull through this. After two long months, I have finally returned home to Hoedspruit. The recovery process is long, but could not be going better. I’m on the road a lot as I have weekly check-ups in Nelspruit or Pretoria, but so far my blood results are look-

ing great and my new German cells are grafting well, in fact my most recent results show that my bone marrow is now 97% donor cells which is amazing! In June next year I will have a PET scan to determine that the cancer is in remission and believe that this will be the end of our long battle.
Our family has endured so much over the years but it has pulled us so tightly together and developed great compassion in our boys. We have gained such perspective on life and our priorities are clear. Family always comes first. We are the ultimate team and whatever comes our way, we can handle it, together.

are now in danger of extinction; of South Africa’s 38 cycad species, three are extinct in the wild and 12 are critically endangered. In response to this, Steve has successfully changed the emphasis of Cycad Africa from being a commercial nursery to conservation. There was much more to the garden show than the auction: the gardens were open to the public for three days, and 150 persons took the opportunity to visit. In addition to the auctioned items, smaller cycad seedlings were for sale as well as other plants, including orchids and bonsai trees. Another highlight was the

‘mini conference’ which followed the auction. The conference was opened by Ole Ahrens, the incoming President of Hoedspruit Rotary, and Wilna Mew, the current President, told the conference about work Rotary is doing in the Hoedspruit area. The other speakers were Steve Trollip; Wynand Uys, an expert on the ecology of the Blyde River Canyon; and ecotourism expert Gerhard Bruwer. Events of this kind need catering facilities, and on this occasion the Hoedspruit Rotarians took it upon themselves to help both at the gate and with the food. They provided both a good breakfast and an excellent lunch, and all proceeds go to help a school in The Oaks in need of basic facilities. After a strenuous day on Saturday, the garden show continued on Sunday in beautiful sunshine with lots of visitors, very impressed by how the gardens had been developed. The gardens are exceptionally beautiful, and in recognition of this have been nominated by SANLAM as a top venue.

Voories year-end camp out SCS Awards 2018 RICHMOND - The Hoedspruit Voortrekkers went all out for their last camp, ahead of the 2018 exams. Traditional Afrikaner games such as ‘blik aspaai’ and ‘bok-in-die-hok’ were thoroughly enjoyed by the
children who played until late on Friday and Saturday night. The Richmond Bushcamp was the ideal venue and the the swimming pool was a refreshing break from the team building fun and games.
The older Voories were priveledged to have a lesson about weapon handling and the formalities of weapon ownership
from Wynand de Bruin. The camp came to a glorious end after a church service in the riverbed.

Graeme Wuth HOEDSPRUIT - On October 12, Southern Cross College celebrated its learners’ achievements at the 2018 awards evening. Hoedspruit is home to a disproportionate array of talented individuals, one of whom needs no introduction: former Wimbledon champion Mrs Greer Leo-Smith. She was the guest speaker, and her life story of pursuing her dreams gave motivation and encouragement to
all learners - not just the award winners - to continue in their efforts to achieve their goals. Awards were given, both to those who excelled in certain subjects and to learners who demonstrated a passion towards life and dedication to the school. Closing a wonderful evening acknowledging the learners’ accomplishments, the 2018 Crux Leaders handed the candles over to next year’s leaders, who will be carrying the school forward in 2019.
Southern Cross Schools is very proud to announce Dewald Dumon has been selected for the U17 Limpopo Cricket team for the second year running and will be traveling to Durban to participate in the Cricket SA Nationals Week in December. We also congratulate teacher Mickey Buyst who has again been selected as the Limpopo U17 team manager and will also be joining Dewald at Nationals. We wish them all the best!
