HOEDSPRUIT - It was a privilege to be at the launch on Saturday of the new Africa SAFE-T and Destination Medicine Advanced Life Support ambulance. The ambulance is the first in Hoedspruit to be equipped for full life support capabilities along with the required medication. The medical crew will collect a patient and transport them to the most appropriate facility, depending on the situation, not just to the nearest hospital. The emergency medical crew are able to manage both minor and major medical emergencies and patients of all ages, from neo-natal to adult. The ambulance service is available to the public and operates on a fee for service basis. All the medical aids are recognised by this service and will be billed directly. The client will only be charged for the level of care received, not for the staff on the vehicle. As this is the first ambulance with these capabilities in Hoedspruit, it will indeed make a substantial difference to the

community and improve the outcomes of medical emergencies in the area. The ambulance will be based in Hoedspruit. At the launch, after viewing the ambulance we moved over to the Hoedspruit Civil Airport (opposite Buco) to view the second part of the Africa SAFE-T capacity: a fixed wing air ambulance to be used in the event that a patient urgently needs to be moved to Johannesburg for Level 1 care. The aircraft is a Kingair 200, and is also fully kitted out with full Intensive care unit capabilities. Flying time to Johannesburg is approximately 50 to 55 minutes, and transfer on landing to the appropriate facility would take another 30 to 40 minutes. In essence, once the plane takes off, you can be safely transferred

to the best care facility within about 90 minutes. Africa SAFE-T will be sponsoring lighting for the airstrip so that the air ambulance is able to land and take off at night. This makes it a full 24/7 offering. Tourists will be covered by their travel insurance. For me personally, it gives me peace of mind to know that this quality of care is now readily available in Hoedspruit. Africa SAFE-T and Destination Medicine will be working with the local doctors as well as with Farm Watch. All lodges in the area should advertise the below number to their customers. The emergency service can be reached on: 010-590-6313. Overall I would give this initiative 10 out of 10 for what it is bringing to our community.

Hlokomela awarded Gold for women’s healthcare services Desiré Wright

CAPE TOWN – On 28 November 2018 a delegation from Hlokomela attended the annual Community Chest Impumelelo Social Innovations Awards at the Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town. Only a limited number of organisations were invited to apply for the awards, with Hlokomela being the only organisation invited from Limpopo and/or Mpumalanga. We are extremely proud that the Hlokomela Women’s Clinic, which has been in operation for just over a year, won a gold award at the ceremony, along with a cash prize of R30 000. The prize will be used to manufacture and distribute reusable, washable sanitary pads to women in the communities, as well as to female farm workers in the Maruleng area. Through this campaign we will have a real impact not only on

the lives of the 200 women who will each receive a pack of six of these pads, but also on the environment. The women will no longer need to resort to unhygienic alternatives to sanitary pads because they can’t afford to buy disposable pads. The environment will benefit as well because 200 women will no longer be dumping used pads in rivers and streams! The Community Chest Impumelelo Social Innovations Awards is a leading awards programme in South Africa that rewards innovators who find creative solutions to public problems. In 2008 Hlokomela won a silver award for the organisation’s innovative work in the fields of poverty reduction and community development. In 2010 Hlokomela won a star award for the organisation’s Nompilo (community health worker) project. The Hlokomela Women’s

Clinic was born out of necessity after two local women died from undetected cervical cancer, and the realisation that there were no accessible medical facilities in the Hoedspruit area that can provide breast and cervical cancer screening, particularly for low-income women. The clinic is made possible through the support of the Tshemba Foundation, Rotary International and Rotary Hoedspruit. The Hlokomela Women’s Clinic is the only medical facility in the region, public or private, that provides 4D ultrasounds and cryotherapy. The clinic’s wide range of women’s healthcare services are also available to private clients. Money raised in this way ensures the sustainability of the project in the long term. DAKTARI recognised at FGASA relocates to SANParks Kudu Awards Hoedspruit-info Centre Kerstin Nyberg Peart KRUGER NATIONAL PARK - The Kudu Awards acknowledge the very best in conservation in South Africa. These national awards, a South African National Parks (SANParks) initiative with sponsorship also from TotalSA and FNB, celebrate the successes and contributions of individuals and groups, both within SANParks and among external stakeholders. Through the Kudu Awards, SANParks give recognition to the winners and raise awareness of the efforts being done in conservation management. It is the dedication of all people involved in this field that is the key to success. The Kudu Award 2018 winners were announced recently at a glittering ceremony in Gauteng, attended by SANParks senior management; government representatives, including the acting minister of Environmental Affairs, Derek Hanekom; the CEO for TotalSA, Pierre-Yves Sachet; and FNB representatives. When Michele and Ian Merrifield, co-founders of DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage applied for a Kudu Award a few months ago, they barely dared to hope for such a complete success. They had strong local backing, with supporting letters from MarieTinka Uys, Kruger to Canyon Biosphere, James Carne, coowner of Sausage Tree Lodge in Balule, and Ernest Buthelezi,

an ex-volunteer now working as a game ranger at Mala Mala, After the first announcement that DAKTARI had been selected as a finalist, Michele and Ian travelled to the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand to attend the Kudu Awards ceremony on November 16. The other shortlisted projects in the ‘Non-Profit Making Institution’ category were much bigger than DAKTARI, and they were already very proud to be part of such an esteemed group of organisations. Ian was in for a big surprise when he was called on stage as winner of the Non-Profit Making Institution Contribution category! Not only that, but the cheque he received for the generous sum of R20 000 was more than many of the other awards conferred that night. Everyone at DAKTARI is extremely

proud of this achievement and grateful to SANParks for recognizing their conservation efforts. The DAKTARI team is more than ever ready to honour this award, and wants to thank everyone who helped them go that far through their support. We are all winners! DAKTARI was not the only local organisation to be successful at the Awards. As reported in K2C News on November 23, the K9 Unit of Southern African Wildlife College won an award in the Innovation category, as recognition of their novel approach to, and results in, anti-poaching. It is truly amazing that two awards in such a prestigious national competition have been conferred to local organisations in the Hoedspruit area, but they both also truly deserve their success.

HOEDSPRUIT – Kruger2Canyon and Hoedspruit-info are proud to be the new hosts of South Africa’s premier field guiding accreditation’s Hoedspruit office. As of Dec 1, 2018, the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA) has relocated their Regional Office in Hoedspruit to the Hoedspruitinfo Centre. FGASA has entered into to a collaboration with the Hoedspruit-info Centre and Kruger2Canyon News to add value to the community, its members, Training Providers, Assessors and the public. The FGASA office hopes to be fully functional, conducting all membership queries, registrations and book sales on a daily basis, by January 2019. Speaking of the collaboration, Michelle du Plessis, FGASA Managing Director, expressed her excitement: ‘FGASA is looking forward to working with organisations that play such a significant role in Hoedspruit, the Province and in the Tourism Industry. It makes perfect sense to expand FGASA’s presence within the hub of Limpopo to make it easier for our members,’ she said. Wild Shots Outreach students visit Cape Town!

Story by Harriet Nimmo Co founder of Wild Shots Photographs by NYE Photography, Ludlow CAPE TOWN - Nine Wild Shots Outreach students from Frank Maghinyana High School, Ludlow had the opportunity to visit Cape Town and attend the international Wild Shots wildlife photography conference. This was the trip of a lifetime for the students – never having left rural Mpumalanga or been on a plane! The Wild Shots conference, provided a day of inspiration, story-telling and stunning imagery featuring some of the world’s best wildlife photographers. The lucky students

had the chance to interview keynote speaker, Brent Stirton. National Geographic photographer Brent was born in South Africa but now lives in LA, and has won every international photography award going. On the Sunday, the students had an exciting day touring the Cape Peninsula. They were accompanied by Dennis Smith, a Botswanan guide with Wilderness Safaris. Their tour included highlights such as Cape Point and the penguins at Boulders Beach. Wild Shots Outreach founder Mike Kendrick says ‘this was a unique chance for the next generation of South African photographers to spend time with some of the world’s top nature photographers.’

Changing lives, one HALO Christmas Drive school uniform at a time HOEDSPRUIT - Following on from two very successful Christmas Drives, Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach HALO has just launched its third annual appeal. This year we are appealing for Christmas donations for the dogs in our outreach area of Ga-Moraba in California, some 50kms outside of Hoedspruit town. Ga-Moraba is one of our busiest outreach areas where we are seeing an average of 120 dogs per visit – on the last visit we saw a record 138 dogs! Only a few of these dogs have a collar or lead, and we often see owners bringing their dogs with makeshift collars and leads made from chains, mielie meal bags or rope – and often the rope is tied with a slip-knot that tightens around the dog’s neck as it pulls – or they carry their dog or hold onto it by its leg to make sure it doesn’t run off. We are appealing for col-

lars and leads this Christmas – dog food and plastic bowls for water/food or a rope toy would be an absolute bonus! Gift-tags featuring our GaMoraba dogs can be found on the Christmas tree at Pick n Pay. Pick a tag and leave your name and tag number at the manager’s desk. Santa Shoebox = Joy + laughter + happiness ACORNHOEK - It was another joyous end of the year as Eco Children got to hand out a whopping 1600 Santa Shoeboxes at creches and schools around Acornhoek and the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve. Corné Havenga, CEO of Eco Children, was overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone who donated. ‘We have had the privilege of collecting and distributing Santa Shoeboxes in the Hoedspruit and Acornhoek area for the past seven years and this year has been a highlight. Our donors, both local and from further afield, really came to the party to make sure that each child received a box of joy this

festive season,’ she said. This year’s donations brings the total number of Santa Shoeboxes that Eco Children has handed out over the past seven years close to 10,000, and Corné was quick to point out that they couldn’t have done it on their own. ‘We are so grateful to the Santa Shoebox project for establishing this amazing initiative and helping us to share the joy with those who don’t have much and who so deserve a little joy in their lives. Then, of course, we have to acknowledge each and every person who pledged and donated a Santa Shoebox this year. This project is totally reliant on the

ACORNHOEK - The Kit-aKid project has been a roaring success this year, with donations heading towards Eco Children’s target of handing over 700 school uniforms before the end of the year. Eco Children CEO, Corné Havenga, was excited to confirm that more than half of the required donations had been received and hundreds of children had already received their new school uniforms as they look forward to the beginning of school in 2019. The Kit-a-Kid programme is one of Eco Children’s most successful initiatives ever, having kitted out more than 3,600 learners with school uniforms since its inception in 2009. This year, Eco Children is aiming for its biggest year yet, hoping to kit out 700 children with a new school uniform. ‘I am still amazed how a child’s attitude changes the moment they receive their very own, new school uniform,’ says Corné. She continues: ‘For many of these children, this is the first time they own a new set of clothes and not a hand-me-down. The amount of pride they take from this simple thing is incredible and we can see the effects of this in the quality of the work they produce.’ A big part of this year’s success was the donation received from a German couple, Tobias and Nicole Grabmeier, who decided to raise money as part of their honeymoon trip to South Africa. They visited Eco Children during

goodness of each and every one of you and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you enable us to make this happen each year,’ she continued. Eco Children reached out far and wide to collect enough Santa Shoeboxes this year and received a big boost when a number of local lodges pledged 100 shoeboxes each during their Mandela Day celebrations in July. Klaserie Drift Camps, Camp George and Sun Destinations each donated 100 boxes, and they were further supported by a massive donation of over 200 boxes from Southern Cross Schools. More boxes came in from the 100% Foundation , the Simunye Group, Makumu and Huis Maroela (100 boxes). Rynfield Primary School in Benoni was the biggest donor, sending a whopping 300 boxes halfway across the country to Hoedspruit. Corné concluded: ‘We cannot thank everyone who donated enough for their support of this project and also every volunteer who helped us collect and label boxes on a sweltering Lowveld summer day. We absolutely cannot do this without you and we hope to see you again next year as we share the love during the festive season. We would also like to thank Santa Shoebox itself and the Kidz2Kidz Trust who make all of this possible. We love being a part of this and hope we can continue doing this for many years to come.’

Eat, pray, climb, the journey to Base Camp... HOEDSPRUIT / EVEREST - Two Hoedspruit ladies will be taking on a challenge of a lifetime when they climb to the famous Everest Base Camp next year. Carina Nel and Nina van Eeden are hoping to inspire oth-

er women to realise their dreams and make them a reality. Everest symbolises the many challenges faced in every-day life. It is tough to meet all the expectations from society, from one’s family, children, work,

and even from oneself. Life is always full of challenges but the biggest thing that holds you back is fear, guilt and regret. You can overcome obstacles with resilience, patience, discipline and determination.

Carina and Nina, ‘partners in climb’ are not afraid of a challenge. They love having fun and do everything with enthusiasm. Carina Nel has two daughters, and a husband who supports her goal of climbing four mountains

before she reaches the age of 40. Her professional career is in food safety management systems and hygiene. She climbed Kilimanjaro in 2017 with her 68-year old dad, Skip Scheepers. Nina van Eeden has two sons, and her husband also supports her efforts in climbing her first mountain. She is a teacher at Laerskool Mariepskop; she loves doing trails in the Mariepskop area and is ready to take on Everest Base Camp next. Carina and Nina will be attempting the South Base Camp trail which is situated in the Khumbu region of Nepal. The 16-day trip will start with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, which has been rated one of the most dangerous airports in the world due to its short runway. It will be freezing cold, and specialised gear and clothing are a necessity on this trip. The days will consist of plenty of walking surrounded by the most beautiful and unspoilt natural scenery. They will be sleeping in lodges and tea houses along the way and eat carbohydrate rich meals that mostly consist of starches, rice and soups. partying at the Namche bazaar, and putting up prayer flags will be some of the fun things to do along the way. The base camp, gateway for climbing the highest mountain in the world, is where their journey reaches its highest altitude of 5545 AMSL. They will then descend to Lukla to wait for the charter flight back to Kathmandu. What will be the most difficult? Toilet facilities are a big challenge, and the thin air at high altitude can cause mountain sickness, which fortunately can be managed with medication. Equipment like trekking poles, sleeping bags, water bottles, duffel bags and hiking packs are also required. You can support these courageous women by buying dried mangoes and personalised gifts which Carina and Nina will be selling at the Hoedspruit Farmers’ Market to raise more funds.
