Dashing end to the year

Michael Dickerson FRANKLYN PARK - Saturday 15 December saw Lowveld Trail Running closing off their 2018 calendar with the December Summer Dash held at Franklyn Park. After an extremely successful year with the launch of the Pam Golding Wildlife Estate Series, and Marepe Trail Run in conjunction with the Kruger2Canyon

Challenge and KZN Trail running, it was a fitting end to a great year. The combination of the hilly terrain and the heat made it pretty tough, this however was negated by the beautiful routes, which offered plenty of places to run in the shade alongside dams and rivers, and through avenues of giant mango trees. This was evident on all the smiling and happy faces that

were captured in the photos at the event. It was also fantastic to have a number of visitors join us from around the country and even a few from Europe, but it was really exciting to see many of the regulars who have attended the events throughout the year and have grown from strength to strength. Thank you for the awesome support. Franklyn Park lends itself perfectly to the summer theme,

with jumping castles and the fountain being a much needed watery relief from the heat. Throughout the year Lowveld Trail Running has had fantastic support from the community, and this event was no exception. Buco Hoedspruit supported the runners on course by supplying and manning the water tables, Swift were on hand to provide medical assistance if needed, and the beau-

tiful images were captured by local photographer Tim Baynham. Tim goes beyond just taking the odd snap and can often be found recceing the course beforehand to find the perfect shot. Special mention must be made of Carl and Lani of Blyde Adventure Centre who manage Franklyn Park. They have done an amazing job in restoring the venue to its for-

mer glory and provided much needed sustenance to hungry runners and supporters alike. Lowveld Trail Running looks forward to holding many more successful trail running events at Franklyn Park in the future. Thanks also to Kruger2Canyon News for the fantastic media support of all our events!

K2C BR partners from Mopani District and Maruleng Municipality, SANParks BSP and LEDET honoured this event with their presence, giving words of support to the EMs and recognising the impact that the EM program has had in the landscape. The event had components of a prize giving ceremony where

excelling EMs were recognized for their work during the year. The categories included acknowledgement of the most hard working EM, most knowledgeable EM, and the Pot plant of the group, the one who keeps the group together. The K2C BR data Capturer Keneilwe Mmushi also facilitated awards related to the submission of data under the following categories: Best quantitative data, qualitative data and the most consistent EM. This session was really a

highlight of the day as EM saw the value in the work they had put in throughout the year. Another interesting part of the day was the pageant that took place, and in the end produced Mr and Miss K2C BR. In this competition, the participants whom were all EMs, displayed their personality, made outfits out of recyclable material and showed off their environmental knowledge and skills. Winners were MRS Mmabotse-Shai and Mr Daddy Mathaba.

Let Christmas begin! CemAir takes off again

Kerstin Nyberg Peart KAMPERSRUS - The Craft Market at 24 Degrees South has become a Christmas tradition in Hoedspruit, and a sure sign that Christmas is almost here. The market has been held for around ten years, and has grown from a modest start to the 40 – 50 stalls that are now the rule. This year 44 stalls dotted the gardens, not forgetting the 11 shops and restaurants permanently on the property. With the monthly Farmers Market now a fixture in the social life of Hoedspruit, the main

organiser for the 24 Degrees South market, Jennifer Gorrie, had gone that extra mile to give variety and sparkle. This year there were exhibitors both from Hoedspruit and from further afield. Alpha Jewellers from Polokwane is among the popular regulars, and Mumsie had brought some wonderful crafts from Malawi. On the food side, Anjo’s famous chargrilled chicken is always a winner! A novelty for 2018 which went down very well with the market visitors was Hoedspruit’s very own newly launched Primos Gin. The list is long - these are

just a few examples of the many good stalls that made the market so successful. To make the event even more enjoyable, the talented Minanzi Mbira band from White River provided great music and great atmosphere on the sunny and hot Sunday. Sue Godding, who is also closely involved in the organisation, estimated that about 500 – 700 people visited the Christmas market this year. The organisers would like to thank all the stall holders for supporting the market, as well as all the visitors who came through on the day!

HOEDSPRUIT - It was great news to all in the Tourism Industry and in general when the ruling against CEM air was overturned. This happened when an

order under the rigorous scrutiny of the High Court was given in favour of CemAir, overturning the decision of the Civil Aviation Authority who grounded

CemAir on 13 December. There was jubilation in the Tourism Industry at the decision of the High Court!

Radio Active hit by fire HOEDSPRUIT - On Thursday 13 December a fire broke out on the top of the Mariepskop mountain. ‘Although there has been a lot of speculation, the fire is believed to have started

due to a faulty electrical cable damaged by lightning a couple of days earlier,’ says Gideon Stander of Radio Active. ‘The fire raged on for about 24 hours, burning around 3.5 square kilometres in the vicinity of the telecommunications towers.’ ‘The towers on Mariepskop serve as Radio Active’s main point of distribution, so we were dramatically effected as a result of the extensive damage’ said Gideon. ‘Two towers and all related equipment were dam-

aged and around 100 meters of electrical as well as 70 meters of fibre cable were consumed by the fire, causing in excess of a R100 000 of damage.’ Luckily their dedicated team had all the damage repaired within a couple of hours and very quickly got all clients back online. The power remained offline for 6 days and many operators had to provide for backup power over the last week. Fortunately this has now also been resolved.

Cooperative Agreement signed Lindsey Jones GREATER KRUGER - Today marks a historic day in the life of the Greater Kruger. After three years of meetings, workshops and intense negotiations, the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Areas (GLTFCA) Cooperative Agreement has been signed. Signatories include SANParks / Kruger National Park (KNP) and the neighbouring protected areas that form part of the Greater Kruger open system. Fences were dropped between Kruger and some neighbouring areas in the late 1990’s and the enlarged conservation space brought significant ecological benefits for the landscape as a whole. However, tensions arose due to different role-players

implementing conflicting approaches to managing water, waste, tourism, hunting and wildlife security, to name but a few issues. The GLTFCA Cooperative Agreement directly addresses this problem by laying down a common governance framework to guide all aspects of protected area management, including ensuring that conservation benefits communities living closest to protected areas. However, the Agreement is not just a set of rules, norms and standards. It is rapidly becoming an instrument and platform to foster communication, cooperation and a common sense of purpose amongst role-players, such as government, communities and the private sector. Within the Umbabat, we already reap

the benefits of being part of the Agreement, as we better cooperate with our neighbours to protect endangered species, such as rhino. The Umbabat owes a great debt to Theo van Wyk (Chairperson), Lenny Willson (Vice-chairperson) and Bryan Havemann (Warden) who represented Umbabat at different stages during the last three years as the Agreement took shape. Their persistence, enthusiasm and “big picture” thinking were crucial ingredients that helped shape the Agreement process. Now that all the formalities of the signing process are over, the real work begins. ‘Today we gained 360 000 hectares for conservation’ said Theo Van Wyk after signing the agreement. ‘We have a shared, collective responsibility now to make protected areas relevant to the whole of society. The Umbabat sits right in the heart of the Greater Kruger, and we believe the value of the area will continue to grow, not just for our members, but also for those outside the protected area.’ Mr. Glen Phillips, Managing Executive of Kruger National Park, summarised the mood at the signing ceremony aptly with a final slide that read: “A legacy of hope for generations to come!” Contact: info@umbabat.com

Local author Jann Bader launches his latest work

HOEDSPRUIT - Jann Bader has launched his latest book: Shattered Dreams. An amazing journey across South Africa results in the publishing of a coffee table book, which details all those scenes that cause many of us to wonder at what went wrong when we see derelict buildings, standing abandoned in the landscape – rotting trac-

tors, rusting implements, forlorn empty buildings, ravaged by fire and sometimes by vandals. The book reflects what must have been the dreams and hopes of the people who had a vision for their future, and that of their communities and even their inventions – and it tells the story of what might have shat-

tered the dream and the hope. This book is a wonderful combination of storytelling and photography, a perfect addition to every coffee table in the nation. Signed copies now available at Pegi’s Book Emporium in the Kamogelo Centre in Hoedspruit, or order online at www. shattereddreams.co.za

Pangolin party! The basket man Harriet Nimmo

HOEDSPRUIT - 150 conservation minded Hoedspruiters joined the Pangolin Party at the Maroela Bar on Dec 1st to help raise funds for pangolin conservation. There was poker, pizza, a very lively auction and much fun. Pangolins are now the target of more illegal trafficking than any other animal in the world. Rhino Revolution are caring for and rehabilitating pangolins rescued from the illegal poaching trade, with veterinary assistance from

Provet. A big thank you to Provet’s Pete Rogers for hosting the auction, and Rhino Revolution’s vet nurses Natalie Rogers and Jade Aldridge, Provet’s Linda Poultney, and the Maroela Bar’s Lou Rambert for making the event such a huge success. Rhino Revolution was recently informed that a pangolin was spotted for sale on Facebook! If you wish to report any pangolins held illegally, please rather call, Whatsapp, or message Hemmersbach Anti-Poaching unit on 079 541 8132.

HOEDSPRUIT - Street vendors are an integral part of economies around the world, offering easy access to a wide range of goods and services in public spaces. They sell everything from fresh vegetables to prepared foods, from building materials to garments and crafts. Most street vendors provide the main source of income for their households, bringing food to their families and paying school fees for their children. Meet Sydney Chadi from Casteel in Acornhoek who travels mostly twice a month to Hoedspruit to sell his products. Sydney sells picnic baskets, dustbin baskets, bread baskets, and flower and fruit baskets made by his own, hard working hands. The prices of the baskets range from R30 to R350. Sydney told K2C News that he learnt basket weaving from his father who used to make all these products. Sydney said ‘I started making baskets in 1991 after realizing that people can use their own hands to make a living rather than complain about not getting employed and loafing around the streets’. ‘I disagree when people say that there is no work when we

can use our hands and talents to support our families’ said Sydney. Sydney makes the best baskets that one can ever wish for. People in the Hoedspruit area are welcome to contact Sydney on 076 173 6436 for special orders, he will willingly make you any basket you might need.

Take a hike this Christmas the Dientjie Falls in the foot of the Blyde River Canyon, where buck abound, baboon calls echo and eagles and ibises soar overhead. The Bourke’s Luck area also offers a number of other day trails and a 30-kilometre three-day overnight trail. All are self-guided. Another option is the newly reinvented Jock of the Bushveld Day Hike, running along the edge of the escarpment, taking in Paradise Camp from the book Jock of the Bushveld and offering great grassland bird sightings along the banks of the

many streams. It even has its own geocache site. Sabie offers the popular Bridal Veil hike, a gentle wander along the Sabi River to this popular waterfall, with some challenging detours for the more adventurous, and the walk to the Forest Falls, known for being the only falls in Mpumalanga to be wider than they are high. Hazyview offers the popular Matumi Trail, a shady wander along the Mac Mac River from its confluence with the Sabaan and Sabi Rivers. Cool off in the forest, chase butterflies and find a rare Narina

MPUMALANGA - With more and more day and overnight trails opening every week, hiking is rapidly becoming one of Mpumalanga’s major drawcards for visitors. There are literally hundreds of spectacular hiking trails on offer, lasting anything from several hours to several days. Examples include day hikes at Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) sites, such as the Belvedere Day Hike from Bourke’s Luck. This fullday trail takes in some hefty gradients and leads down to

Trogon or a red duiker among the many matumi trees. Situated in the Nelshoogte Forest Reserve between Barberton and eManzana (Badplaas), the Queen Rose Trail is arguably one of the most scenic hiking trails in South Africa. The twoday, 26km hike takes adventurers through indigenous forest, over mountain passes, through the Montrose timber plantation and along the Queens River. Spectacular scenery and rich in wildlife, including over 350 bird species. The hike includes 20 river crossings, some with suspension bridges to keep boots and kit dry, as well as several natural pools where hikers can take a break and cool down. Alternatively, the Num-Num Hiking Trail is a self-guided 3-5 day hiking trail situated between eManzana (Badplaas) and eNtokozweni (Machadodorp) in the Skurweberg Mountains. This trail has been rated by Green Flag as moderate-to-difficult, meaning hikers have to be of reasonable fitness and agility. Along the route, hikers may encounter suspension bridges, ladders and steep up- and downhills to get into stunning gorges. The route winds through a spectacular variety of Highveld Escarpment terrains, including indigenous forests, sandstone mazes, ancient grasslands, waterfalls and panoramic views of the Komati River Gorge. Overnight accommodation is in five unique and comfortable camps that have equipped kitchens and hot showers. The Kruger National Park offers numerous trails with possibly the most exciting being the opportunity to backpack the length of the park in a rigorous hike broken up into 100-kilometre sections. The SANParks Honorary Rangers are offering this as a chance to ‘Follow in the Footsteps of the Giants’. For more information contact Hoedspruit-info.com on 0157932617

Drakie leaders campout Melanie Wright HOEDSPRUIT - Drakensig scholar patrol leaders, security and media leaders went camping on Drakensig school grounds. They were taught what values are. The leaders had to add to a list of values and had to go through a sifting process and choose two values. There were discussions why we need values and why they chose their core values. Each one of them is going to work on their core values during the next year to try to live them.

They also had to learn to work as a team and learnt how to accommodate one another. How they can support one another to get the group to achieve. There were a lot of activities they had to do as a group; it was not always easy as it was extremely hot during the camp. Each group designed a new game with balloons. They had to explain the rules and demonstrate how to play the game. The best of all was the swimming at LA pool, there they could cool off and just enjoy the water.

The Herb Garden Zanet Visser HOEDSPRUIT -This hidden gem on the Blyde River is full of surprises. On entering the shade netting you are overwhelmed by the many pleasant smells. There are areas planted with mint, parsley, spring onion, sage, rosemary, thyme and more. The colourful edible flowers add dashes of colour. These plants are lovingly tended by a small dedicated group of people. A special mix of manure, time and care helps to produce an organic crop. Produce from the herb garden is delivered to local lodges and vegetable suppliers. The Herb Garden is part of a three hour tour presented by Hlokomela. The spekboom maze at the same venue is a great conversation starter. A trip worth taking. A place worth seeing. An experience worth sharing. Contact Hoedspruit-info for bookings at 015 7932617
