place over the Christmas period. The driver allegedly used the municipality’s silver Mercedes-Benz GLE 400, worth more than R800,000, without the mayor’s knowledge and crashed it into another vehicle at Makgaung Village on December 26. It is alleged that two pedestrians were also injured in the accident. Sekgobela has denied he was on private business when the accident happened, and claims that he was responding to the Mayor’s call to collect her from Tzaneen, but when he arrived there he found that she had already arranged alternative transport to go home. The Mayor, however, has disputed this and claims that her driver was not on duty that day. According to The Sowetan, Councillor Jeffrey Marema has said that the council will demand that the driver should be fired for abusing municipal resources. ‘The municipality can’t be expected to spend more than R200,000 fixing the vehicle while our people lack basic services such as water and tar roads,’ Jeffrey said.

Mayor of Maruleng, Dipuo Thobejane survived a vehicle accident last Friday. The accident took place at Jonkmanspruit, Blyde Bridge.

HOEDSPRUIT - Last Friday, the Mayor of Maruleng, Dipuo Thobejane, wrote off her car after it collided head-on with another vehicle that was exiting from a side road according to eyewitnesses who arrived on the scene just minutes after the accident. In a report on the accident in The Sowetan, municipal spokesperson John Seokoma is quoted as saying: ‘The accident happened on Friday but the mayor was not injured or hospitalised.’ They also quoted an employee at Hoedspruit Panel Beaters who said that they had towed the mayor’s car on Friday afternoon after the accident and that it didn’t look as if anybody had been injured. An insider had told The Sowetan that the Mayor was driving her white Ford Ranger double cab herself as her official driver, who crashed an official mayoral vehicle last month, had been suspended. The Mayor’s official driver, Pulane Sekgobela, crashed the official mayoral vehicle in an accident which took

Some realities about the tyre fitting shop! Dear Editor The letter from Stuart Woodhead in last week’s edition of this newspaper refers. This is not the first time the issue has been raised - it first emerged on Facebook about two months ago, when the building was just a frame. At that time, most people felt the place was not needed, not wanted, and detracted from what most people see as the future of this town. Nothing happened! Mr. Besselaar is completely blameless - imagine his surprise when he discovered that his plans to put up a shed to conduct a semi industrial business right on our high street were approved - he must have been amazed that his “long shot” came home and he was free to go ahead - and we are lucky that he did not elect to build an abattoir or a waste disposal plant there, which is not to say that now that the floodgates are open somebody else will not come along, knock down a house and put up another

unsuitable business. Mr. Woodhead too is correct - all his observations relating to traffic, noise, and of course the unfortunate sight of a shed on our high street are perfectly in order - if he can be called out on something it would be that he fails to mention that Hoedspruit already has two fine fitment centres and just enough business to sustain both of them. Both of them are discreetly located, yet it is doubtful that there is a single vehicle owner in our region who doesn’t know they exist and is waiting with bated breath for a third one to come along - now the business will be re-divided and maybe jobs will be lost. So who do we point a finger at? Obviously our authorities who approved the plans and have sat silently whilst the construction takes place. How did they justify this? How did they explain why the town would develop with light industry not concentrated in one place, but spread all over?

Where is their long-term plan for developing Hoedspruit especially given the already well-known reasons why the town exists in the first place. Where is the Business Chamber and all of those concerned with development and planning? Where were those who would have us believe they keep a watchful eye over development here? They were nowhere to be seen. Mr. Besselaar is not going to take down his shed - and why should he. What we have to understand is that if I now want to open a meat packing plant next door to him in an identical shed, with a small factory shop attached I will simply point out his shed and insist my shed also be approved. Can we argue that there hasn’t been time to act? No, we cannot, the shed has not been built in secret, behind cladding, it has always been there from day one for all to see it develop. Jann Bader

It is with some dismay that I witness the appearance of a new multi-story industrial size building (I have been informed this is a new tyre business), on the R527, just before the Doctors and Dental Practice (opposite the Spar Centre). There are a few immediate matters requiring clarity, as follows: 1. The planning permission for this property will need transparency on the application, hearing, and decision granted for this building. 2. The commercial zoning and EIA on the proposed building - can we have access to that plan? 3. The formal compulsory issue of notice to the neighbouring public of the new building,

and all plans associated with this project. 4. If there are any other pending plans received by the Municipality which involves commercial businesses and/ or any existing businesses and new buildings, and what is the formal process of disclosure and approval of such plans? 5. If the majority of Hoedspruit residents decide to petition against the new building and are successful in their plans to submit a legal document that will result in all building works ceasing (interdict), how will this be enforced? 6. The latest Road Management Plan and Highways review and consent for this business to build here. What is the traffic flow plan? 7. The disregard of the build-

ing rubbish and rubble left undisposed of along the road. Who is to instruct this to be cleared or the builder fined? 8. The negative impact this creates for tourism in the area. 9. Impact to existing businesses in the area who were prevented from doing the same thing? What is there to prevent this happening again? This appears to be yet another disregard of process and policy. Lack of consultation and transparency, openness to respond, etc. This building should be stopped, all processes questioned and verified, and the building relocated to an industrial part of the town. We should be improving the fabric make-up of our town, not degrading it! Maxine Smith Concerned resident

Standing ovation for South Africa at International Green Economies Conference CAPE TOWN – ‘It felt so good to be a South African! Our National Department of Environmental Affairs hosted a very important International Conference to the highest standard’, said Marie-Tinka Uys, Executive of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region Non Profit Company, who attended the conference. The 3rd Ministerial Confer-

ence of the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) was hosted in Cape Town from 10 - 11 January. The theme was Advancing Inclusive and Sustainable Economies, and followed two successful conferences, in Dubai in 2014 and Berlin in 2017. PAGE was launched in 2013 as a response to the call at Rio+20 to support countries

wishing to embark on greener and more inclusive growth trajectories. It places sustainability at the heart of economic policies and practices to advance the 2030 United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development, and supports nations and regions in reframing economic policies and practices around sustainability to foster economic growth, create in-

come and jobs, reduce poverty and inequality, and strengthen the ecological foundations of their economies. PAGE represents a mechanism to coordinate UN action on green economy and to assist countries in achieving and monitoring the emerging sustainable development goals. South Africa was among the pioneers in adopting the green economy strategies. By signing the Green Economy Accord in 2011 and adopting in 2012 the National Development Plan 2030, our country is committed to an “environmentally sustainable and equitable transition to a low carbon economy.” South Africa has recently put in place many programmes and policy frameworks to translate the NDP Vision 2030 into action. “South Africa is currently implementing programmes to promote energy efficiency, green transport, sustainable housing and climate resilient agriculture” the Department of Environmental Affairs’ Minister, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane said at the official opening. “The Conference asked the right question,” Marie – Tinka Uys said: “How can we create jobs, reduce inequalities, protect the environment and grow the economy? The answer is that we can restructure

our economic and financial systems to drive sustainability and social inclusion; the two prerequisites for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and targets of the Paris Agreement on climate change. We can shape the future of work. The potential of advancing technology and automation can be harnessed for better, higher-skilled, and fairer jobs – but only if our institutions are robust and innovate at the speed of change. We can radically rethink the ways we consume and produce. A full life-cycle approach to things we make and use on a day-to-day basis can revitalize economies and take pressure off our natural resources. The private sector, and in particular micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises are already leading a new wave of entrepreneurship and innovation driving the new circular economy.” When asked what impressed her the most at the paperless (all information on a cell phone app), no plastic, conference (water bottles were refilled at water points), MarieTinka said: ‘I am so proud of the young South African Conference Moderator, Nozipho Mbanjwa. She was amazing and she represented for me the future of our country!’

The Baby Box Project, now in Hoedspruit

HOEDSPRUIT / ACORNHOEK - The Baby Box Project is an organisation now in its fifth year of operation, reaching out to mothers and their babies born in government hospitals. Originating in government hospitals in Johannesburg and Pretoria,

a team of teachers, therapists and doctors who have ties with a hospital in some way, have started the project in Hoedspruit, Limpopo. The aim of the project is to spread hope, kindness and dignity to vulnerable mothers and their babies in rural hospitals. We

do this by visiting maternity units in rural government hospitals on a monthly basis and personally handing out ‘starter packs’ to each mom containing clothing, a blanket and essential toiletries. In 2018, the project reached out to its first hospital in a rural setting, Tintswalo Hospital in Acornhoek. Tintswalo Hospital is a district hospital with an enormous feeder area. It has the highest birth rate in the whole of the Mpumalanga province, with often more than 60 new mothers and babies at a time. The hospital faces enormous staffing and resource challenges, and The Baby Box Project has been a way of bringing sunshine to an otherwise incredibly challenging environment for all those involved. This project has brought absolute joy to so many people involved! From the mothers, to the nursing staff, to the doctors, to the team who put this project in motion, to those who have donated either financially or in kind. It has bought together hospital staff and a community! The Baby Box Project is run by volunteers and is funded entirely by donations. The value of a Baby Box hamper is approximately R350. We accept second hand clothing and other baby goodies which we pack into parcels and distribute amongst local social workers for abandoned babies or families that need help outside of the hospital setting. Donations big and small reach so far! We hope to grow this project so that it may reach other rural hospitals and communities where help is needed most. You may choose to contribute financially or items towards the making up of the bags. Hoedspruit Medical Centre has very kindly offered to be a drop off point. Each starter pack includes a baby blanket; a Babygro (0-3 months), a seasonal outfit and two vests; socks and a hat; a facecloth, baby soap, a roll of cotton wool and a tub of Vaseline; a packet of thick sanitary pads and a packet of nappies; a 500 ml bottle of water; a low cost handmade toy; and a personal note of encouragement. Southern Cross College Pensioners treated to achieve 100% pass rate a day in Kruger Park Gilly Gordon HOEDSPRUIT – The KPS Pensioners’ Day kicked off to an early start, with coffee or tea at 5.30am at the Rumble Restaurant which was our meeting point at Kamogelo. The excited group of Hoedspruit pensioners then boarded the KPS luxury bus, and after a quick briefing we were off to Orpen Gate. It was a lovely social and easy ride, thanks to our driver Jeremy. At Orpen gate it was time for a coffee stop before heading into the Park. HOEDSPRUIT - The grade 12 class of 2018 produced a fantastic set of results. Through hard work and dedication from learners and staff, a 100% pass rate was achieved. Out of a class of 19 pupils, 17 achieved a Bachelors pass which enables them to apply to university, 2 achieved a Diploma pass which allows them to apply to a University of Technology. Congratulations to each and every one for their hard work, determination and motivation. We look forward to following the ‘Class of 2018’ and the paths that they will follow.

Above: The top achievers were Ella Gardner (left), with an 86% average, six distinctions and one B; followed by Fadheelah Aboobaker (middle) with a 79% average and five distinctions; and Megan Mackay, also with a 79% average and four distinctions.

Just one kilometer in, we had our first lion sighting, followed by impala, wildebeest, zebra and steenbok. 100m further along we saw two jackals and a pup. Life could not be better! On route to Satara we were stopped by a local, who informed us where we could find a lioness and some cubs. It was not too far away, and we found them, even more excitement. We then did a very leisurely drive to Satara, seeing some elephants and more plains game. At Satara we stopped for an hour, for our guests to stretch

their legs and relax a bit. We then proceeded to a rest camp and had lunch. Another lovely hour, enjoying the peace and quiet in the bush. We arrived back at Kamogelo around 4 pm. Overall we all had a fantastic time together, it was a fun filled day, with many laughs as we were entertained by one of the locals Hennie. KPS would like to thank the following for their contribution: Engel & Volkers; Fig n Bean for the very tasty lunch; Mariepskop Gas; and Rumble Restaurant.

Die opgewonde juffrouens, Chrisna Els en Nina van Eeden asook al die graad 1-maats se hartjies het vinnig geklop, maar ook net tot almal vining tuis gevoel het. HOEDSPRUIT - On the weekend beginning Friday 11 January, the Crux Leaders, under the guidance of Mr Greg Gibbs, introduced the newcomers to a number of traditions, many of which have been carried down from when the school began. The fun activities included a ‘Speed Dating’ exercise on

Friday to allow G8’s and 12’s to get to know a little about one another, and to pair the Grade 8’s with a ‘big’ brother or sister in Grade 12. The activities were a mixture of lessons in communication, following instructions, and team building. Not to mention having fun! These activities helped the Grade 8s to bond with each other, with the Crux Leaders, and the teachers

involved. Other activities included a potjiekos competition and a fun gala, as well as practicing for the traditional fledgling concert. We look forward to seeing them graduate from their name badges and floppy bush hats and become fully fledged members of the College. Good luck Grade 8s for the two weeks ahead!

GA_MORABA - On Saturday the 12th of January, I had the absolute privilege of joining HALO on their outreach to Ga-Moraba. What a blast we had! Just the most perfect combination of the 2 things I love most - people and animals. We had a record breaking 193 dogs which we got through in an incredible 4 hours! The team is wonderful, so friendly and welcoming. The community is so appreciative,

so open to learning and just so wonderful with their pets who are their worlds. Working in a government institution myself, I just loved how the dogs and their owners arrived in a setting that showed no judgement - just absolute love for them and their trusty hounds and a willingness to educate without having to judge or reprimand like I’ve never seen before. Thank you to the most wonderful team for having me join them! I look so forward to the next outreach already!!

Local chess initiative takes off Superbodies from the Hoed Karen Taljaard Bohlabela Development Initiative

ACORNHOEK - What an amazing day of chess development that took place at Jan Rikhotso Primary School! We were welcomed by close to 200 pupils from the community. From absolute beginners to avid chess players, they joined Ehlanzeni Chess to learn more about the game and to develop their skills. After an intense first session, the children all

enjoyed a hot dog and had some fun playing soccer. Then it was back to the chess board for another chance to learn from the coaches. Ehlanzeni Chess handed over some chess boards to the local teacher, Mr Worry Khoza, who assured us that he will develop and grow chess in the area. After a day filled with love, laughter and lots of chess, it was time to return to Nelspruit. We planted the chess seed and cannot wait to see how it grows and develops!

JOHANNESBURG - Personal trainers from our local gym, the Wildlife Body and Fitness Centre, participated in the IFBB Summer Superbodies Competition held in Johannesburg on December 8, 2018. Matthew Germishuys and Phillipa van Heerden both excelled in their individual categories, after putting in the hard work of dieting and training in preparation for the competition. For his first time competing, Matthew made it to 4th place in the Men’s Classic Body Building category and Philippa also to 4th place in the Ladies Fitness Bikini category. This is an excellent achievement for both as it is the largest competition of the year with 344 participants. Matthew, a qualified Personal Fitness Instructor has trained a range of clients over the past years working with fitness/ cardio, weight loss, strength training, elderly and special

needs people. He believes exercise is fundamental to living a well-balanced life and truly enjoys helping people. He is confident that a fit and healthy athlete lives inside everyone, and it’s his job to motivate clients to unlock their physical potential. It is his passion to help clients reach their goals while preventing injury and reaping the benefits exercise has to offer.

Hoedspruit Inter-High Athletics Meeting On Tuesday, 29 January 2019, Southern Cross College will be hosting the Hoedspruit Inter-High Athletics meeting at Drakensig. The meeting will be held for the second year running, and this year Southern Cross College, Lowveld Academy, Hoedspruit High, and Acorn to Oaks, will be participating. The goal is to turn this into an annual event which will grow in time to allow the athletes from high schools in Hoedspruit and the surrounding areas to compete, and through this healthy competition, showcase the learners’ athletic talent. Hoedspruit is proud to have learners who represent Limpopo Province. As hosts of this year’s athletics meeting, Southern Cross Schools would like to extend an invitation to all parents and affiliates of the schools to attend the event to support the athletes. It will run from 14h00 to 19h00 at the picturesque Drakensig athletics and rugby field, and food and drinks will be available from the tuck shop and various food stalls. We hope to see you there. It promises to be an exciting afternoon. OFFICE: 015 793 1484/5 EMERGENCY: 083 307 9258 Main Street Hoedspruit www.facebook.com/drainsurgeonhoedspruit
