After a very trying battle Keira has emerged the victor. She still has a long journey of intensive physiotherapy to get her back to her normal athletic self, but the worst is over and there is one thing for sure she has the support of the greater community!

Wilna is very pleased that Rotary’s Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), a first for our club, was introduced during her term, with four exceptional students from Southern Cross Schools benefitting from the award. Balule is expanding Kerstin Nyberg Peart

GREATER KRUGER - A great nature reserve just got even greater. On Saturday June 8th, the fence between Jejane Private Nature Reserve, already a region of Balule Game Reserve, and the adjacent property Boston Farm were ceremonially cut, and will soon be down completely. This is truly a historic event: it is the first time in over a hundred years that this area has been completely open. Sharon Haussmann, Chairperson of Balule, and Mike Frankel, owner of Boston Farm, have been busy with the process of opening up the fences since October last year. The complicated administrative and regulatory requirements were completed in October 2018, but there were some fencing requirements which had to be met before the action of fence removal could be taken. Boston farm will be joining Pridelands farm to form a region within Balule. The ‘cutting of the fence’ ceremony took place at 12 noon in brilliant winter sun, and in the presence of management, landowners, staff and Ecotraining students. Mike Frankel made the first cut from his side of the fence, while Rod Hemphill, Chairman of Jejane, attacked the fence with a pair of pliers from the Jejane side. The whole party then crossed

over to the Jejane side where drinks and a braai were waiting. Mike Frankel said that the cutting down of the fences represents a dream come true, and a commitment to conservation which takes priority over human needs and folly. The fence between Boston Farm and their neighbour Pridelands, which is already part of Balule, will also soon come down. The addition of this southern extension of nearly 1 200ha to Balule is

critical in terms of security and consolidation, and the reserve will now be neighbouring on the Air Force Base reserve. Mike and Rod both praised Sharon Haussmann for her persistence and negotiation skills, which were instrumental in making this vision a reality. Inclusion into the open Greater Kruger system is not a simple process, and here all parties have come together and made things happen in the best interest of conservation.

Hlokomela made this possible for the hundreds of Hoedspruiters and tourists who were at this year’s 9th annual Bush Party held at the prestigious Kapama Private Game Reserve. The people of Hoedspruit once more came together and made it a night to remember. The Bush Party did not disappoint;

from the spectacular sunset to the amazing food, and drinks. The Silent Disco SA was a hit once again with jams that took people to cloud nine and back in just one night. On the menu were some of the best dishes Kapama Game Reserve, Tanda Tula Safaris Camp, Khaya Ndlovu Manor House and Driehoek Butcher Shop had to offer. Zwakala Brewery, Safari Wine Club, ClemenGold Gin and Zandvliet Wines kept the drinks flowing throughout the night

for the high energy dancers on the dance floor. Through this year’s Hlokomela Bush Party the organisation was able to raise almost R100 000 towards their charity. A big thank you to the members of Hoedspruit community who came out in masses and the businesses that made this event possible through their generous donations. The series includes Remembering Elephants, Remembering Rhinos, Remembering Great Apes and the much anticipated: Remembering Lions. Remembering Wildlife celebrates some of the world’s most charismatic species as flagships for the conservation of greater ecosystems. Remembering Wildlife is currently one of the biggest wildlife fundraisers worldwide with kick-starter campaigns having raised more than R9 million for conservation already. Contributors and photographers have been lining up to have their images featured in the Remembering Lions book and Albie Venter is

thrilled to have some of his photographs featured. Albie and his wife Freda are based in Hoedspruit and own Africa Unlocked - a company which specialises in providing wildlife experiences with an emphasis on high quality, low volume traveling. ‘Some of the best wildlife photographers in the world have been asked to contribute. I am indeed very humbled and excited to be part of this project and sharing the photography stage with National Geographic and other wildlife photographers’, said Albie. There will be a public launch of the book at London’s Royal Geographical Society on Thursday 17th October 2019 (tickets are available online), along with a free two-week London exhibition from Monday 14th October to Saturday 26th October 2019.

QUIET SHADOWS For three decades now, my travels have taken me to most ground zeros of the great conservation debates. And throughout, ’ve truly appreciated the simple pleasures of waking with the sun, walking, sleeping under the stars and the journey within. I have the greatest respect for colleagues who run primitive wilderness trails, sharing these fundamentals with fertile young minds hungry for understanding. The interface from knowledge to experience to wisdom, begins. Long may these encounters continue! Keep them rustic; embrace the heat, the cold, the emotion and the fear. Is adrenalin not the source of life and living? And, perhaps above all else, recognise the work done by countless brave and un-noticed conservations who do their thing under the radar. Unless you are Saba Douglas-Hamilton perhaps, there is no glamour in conservation work. Plenty of sweat, tears and frustration, but no glamour. No trumpets nor ceremonies. Quiet undisturbed shadows are where mountains move. In order to arrive at this place one needs to do the hard yards for Africa to settle deep enough within you. The good, bad and ugly of our beloved continent. You can fall in love with elephants. Once this watershed happens then next time you see an image of a poached elephant, or an ivory-carved trinket on some far-off mantlepiece, you will be personally a-fronted. You will share the pain. Only then can a meaningful and durable conservation culture establish. Regardless of where life takes our young leaders, whether they go on to become astronauts, surfers or poets is largely irrelevant out beneath the baobabs. Because we will all become conservationists within, and at the end of the day fighters of the good fight. Life is simple. As simple as clean air to breathe. Nobody needs to be a scientist to understand. But in a modern world with so much convenience, even this is far from guaranteed. We have lost sight of the obvious since humankind became intelligent, which out in remote wilderness is largely and in truth, a most useless commodity to have. You can’t even trade it for a sip of water or a patch of shade. Let’s dumb ourselves down then, pay attention to ecological thinking and wisen up. Antony has been guiding for 25 years. He was fortunate enough to start his guiding career as an apprentice in Zimbabwe at a lodge called Touch the Wild in Hwange National Park. FGASA created the framework and structure for him to become a well-rounded, professional Field Guide. He regards waking up to the dawn chorus every morning to be a facilitator of people’s dreams, experiences, and lifelong memories as the best part about being a guide. His greatest ability is to communicate with people on all levels.

Julius has been a guide for almost 20 years. He did his guide training in house at Shamwari Game Reserve. FGASA has provided him with a valuable platform of being part of a database of guides in Southern Africa which has made things easier for him to explore different products out there. He describes being a guide as wonderful in the sense that you get to meet people from all over the world, while working at the wonderful properties we have in our country. His greatest personal strength is working with people and solving problems.

Riaan has been guiding for 18 years. He obtained a National Diploma in Nature Conservation through Tswane University of Technology and completed his practical year with SANParks in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. This really set the tone for his guiding career, but it was FGASA that kept him growing in the industry. Through FGASA he achieved SKS DG (Special Knowledge Skill, Dangerous Game), SKS(Birding) and Trails Guide Qualifications. This framework always inspired him to keep learning and keep growing. It also played a pivotal role in him having a long-term career at one of the top lodges in Southern Africa, alongside a team of exceptional, like-minded field guides. The best thing about being a guide to Riaan is doing something that one is passionate about. He doesn’t think there are many people who can get up in the morning and truly say that they are excited about going to work. His strength is his ability to adapt to guests, trust in one’s guide is the first step in having a life changing safari experience.

Margaux (the rose among the thorns) has been actively guiding for 12 years. She attended a yearlong adventure guiding course in 2003 with a company called Beyond Adventure. It was a prerequisite for her to write the FGASA Level 1 Theory Exam. Obtaining the theory qualification is what inspired her to enrol in EcoTourism Management at the Tshwane University of Technology, and once she completed her BTech qualification, she got an external assessor to assess her for her Level 1 Practical. She says FGASA have definitely raised the level of professionalism in the guiding industry through the continuous monitoring and implementation of higher standards. Her highlight as a guide is enjoying Africa’s wilderness with guests from across the world and seeing the priceless looks on their faces as they share life changing experiences with loved ones. A close second would be the unpredictability of the bush, as not a single safari experience is ever the same. Her ability to stay calm under pressure is her greatest strength.

Rassie has been guiding for 9 years. He started in the Free State and is currently in the Greater Kruger area working at Kapama Private Game Reserve. His FGASA Level 1 training provider was Bushveld Training Adventures in Nylstroom in the North West. FGASA Level 2 Back Up Trails, Full Trails and Tracks&Signs 2 was completed during his employment at Kapama. FGASA assisted him with the necessary workbooks and handbooks in order for him to complete his FGASA Level 1 and 2. In his opinion the best thing about being a guide is being able to take guests out on a game drive and also be yourself; and letting the guest experience nature through your eyes. His greatest personal strength is communicating with guests and other people about his passion for the bush and the animals. He also tries to turn something negative into a positive in life and to learn from every experience.

MAGOEBASKLOOF - On Thursday 2 May 2019, four aspiring young leaders left Southern Cross Schools full of energy and anticipation. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Hoedspruit, SCS Grade 11 learners Kgaphy Mathole, Maria Pica de Oliveira, Selsha Ramohlodi and Leonie Wiltshire headed off to attend a Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camp at the Warrior’s Camp in beautiful Magoebaskloof for the weekend. The Rotary Club of Hoedspruit decided some months ago to sponsor and support young people from local schools to attend the RYLA camps in order to commit to developing leadership skills among young people in the Hoedspruit area. RYLA camps are aimed at just that, building leadership skills, developing personal skills and confidence, and making friendships with other young people. All of this is accomplished through a weekend of challenging activi-

ties including both practical and theoretical activities to promote team building, problem solving and insight into leadership. The ‘RYLA ists’ were greeted enthusiastically by the Warriors Camp facilitators and from then onwards they had an actionpacked weekend in the beautiful mountain setting. Favourite activities selected by the 4 young people were the Journey of Self Discovery – creating a collage about self, a Respect and Love group discussion, and the hike,

culminating in swimming in a waterfall pool. The overwhelming conclusion was that the whole experience taught the participants much about themselves ‘you can’t get somewhere unless you know where you are’, and how to apply this new self-knowledge to lead other people All the participants unanimously agreed that they would have loved to spend more days at the camp as they were having ‘so much fun’ whilst learn-

ing more about themselves. They were even able to put a positive slant on the cold showers by stating ‘we appreciate our school’s boarding house – please tell them that!’. All too soon the weekend was over and the four returned, rather reluctantly, somewhat exhausted, but elated. Definitely an experience to be repeated! Well done to these star pupils from Southern Cross College! You certainly are great ambassadors for our school.

Celebrating success with Sable Tours Tinyiko Makhubela HLUVUKANI - Sable Tours Foundation visited Sokisi High School in Bushbuckridge to award the Top 10 grade 12 academic achievers. As a result of their hard work, Sable Tours surprised the learners with a trip to the Kruger National Park. Not only did they get to travel as VIP’s but it was the very first time that any of them had

travelled in an Open Safari Vehicle! Many children in the community have never been in the park, this is a great opportunity for the learners to explore the park and learn the value of conservation. The school is situated in the Hluvukani area adjacent to the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. The goal is to sow seeds of change, empowering children by increasing their awareness around conservation.

Our biodiversity, our food and our health Mpho Lavhengwa MAMAILA - International Biodiversity Day celebrations in Limpopo took place at Mamaila Village in Greater Letaba Municipality. The event was hosted by the Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism department with the theme being: ‘our biodiversity, our food and our health’. LEDET has been celebrating International Biodiversity Day for the past three years and this year’s event had a great turnout. Among the guests were officials from various government departments, NGO’s, EPWP workers and members of the Mamaila community. Before the event began, officials undertook a site visit at a Land Care Project in Mamaila and planted trees at the entrance of the Mamailakolobetona Community Hall where the event took place. The event kick started with beautiful melodies from the local traditional healers who ushered guests into the hall in style. ‘God entrusted us with nature and we need to conserve it. If we take care of nature, we will be able to get food and therefore live a good life. That is why the 2019 theme became ‘our biodiversity, our food and our health’’, said Mr Tima a representative from Greater Letaba

The Department of Environmental Affairs did a presentation which highlighted the value that our edible indigenous plants have on our health and wellbeing. ‘There are plants that we grew up eating, but today our children don’t know them because they are no more. In future we are looking into mass producing plants like African ginger, African potato, aloe, sausage tree and the fever tree as they have great nutritional, medicinal and economic value’, said

Kruger to Canyons Biosphere showcased their documentary: ‘Our sands - a threat to biodiversity’. The documentary told a heart-breaking story about the impacts of sand mining in local rivers, ecosystems and it is hoped that it will reach many more schools and communities where sand minig is rife.

Hoedspruit Vlakvark MTB Challenge 2019 PRESS RELEASE - Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate will be hosting the 5th annual HiQ Hoedspruit Vlakvark MTB Challenge on 22 June 2019. The event was first held in 2015 and allows competitors an opportunity for a maximum of 250 entrants to ride their bicycles on the exclusive estate. Entries can be done online: http://www. bouttime.co.za/Events/event. aspx?EventId=514. Late entries will be accepted on the morning of the event should there be spots available. This year’s event offers riders the options of the 5km fun ride/walk, and 30km or 60km races. Riders will start at 7am from the Lowveld Academy sports field and enter the estate through a gate installed for the event, follow downhill single track to Hamerkop dam, and then exit through the contractor’s gate. The 5km fun event starts at 11am. The route then crosses the AFB Hoedspruit road near

the stables on Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate to enter the quad track and follow a challenging 5km winding section with some demanding technical features which include a couple of Bull Runs and the smile inducing Dragon’s Back. The quad track will be closed to motor cyclists and quad riders for the duration of the event. The South African Air Force has kindly granted the use of the quad track for the event which is their land. Spectators and photographers are encouraged to take advantage of the many viewing points around the quad track. Two of the best features include ‘Pat’s Peak’, a huge mound of sand with a steep short climb on loose gravel and ‘The Dragon’s Back’, akin to a roller coaster. The new route has increased the single track to about half the distance of the race, and almost eliminated all tar. An exciting event for Hoedspruit MTB!

Buks Strydom HOEDSPRUIT – Drakensig Primary School has had a truly blessed rugby season this year! Out of 30 matches played, there were only 2 losses and 28 wins. This year produced 3 provincial players and several trophies: League winners, Big 5 winners and a trophy for ‘the most attractive rugby player during a festival’. Our school’s first team managed to log almost 1000 points in their favour and only 150 against them with brilliant performances during this rugby season where they triumphed with 150 tries scored. A huge thank you to Buks Strydom, Jan Jordaan and David Hendricks who coached these tremendously talented, disciplined and highly entaining rugby players!
