KAMPERSRUS - The fifth Kruger2Canyon Challenge saw spectacular conditions over the three days from 5-7 July 2019 when participants were in residence in the village at Franklyn Park, near Kampersrus, Limpopo. Day one saw trail runners shed blood, sweat and tears climbing Mariepskop mountain, exploring this incredible floral hotspot that boasts many endemic plant and animal species. In running terms, the 42km course on day one (there is also a 26km option) is considered one of the hardest in the country, thanks to its 2800m of climbing and very technical terrain. Day two is a lot more moderate, but no less spectacular as runners traverse sections of the Blue Canyon Conservancy, taking in Big 4 habitat over 28km or 18km route options. While the emphasis at this event is on the challenge that it poses and the experience, the racing has never been as fierce as it was in the 2019 K2C! Nelspruit local, Johardt van Heerden put in record-smashing performances on both days of the Ultra course, finishing the two days in a combined time of 6:54:44, some 110min below the previous record for this race. Second man Jacques Buys also put in an incredible performance, finishing in 7:24:23 – also 70min below the previous record. Jack Davis rounded out the podium in 8:55:59. The ladies race was a one-horse affair, with Karine Bezuidenhout (ex-pupil of Laerskool Mariepskop) bettering her own previous record on this course to finish in 8:48:49, placing her third overall! Second and third places

Mpho Lavhengwa PHALABORWA, HOEDSPRUIT - The Phalaborwa Roadhogs held their annual Poker run on 29 June 2019. The poker run is a fun filled family event where the young and old ride through towns, and eat and drink for a good cause. ‘Bikers are involved in a lot of charities and this is one of those events where all bikers are welcome to take part’, said the event’s organiser Jaco Botha. Clad in cool denim and leather jackets, riding on their enormous bikes the bikers were a sight to see. A total of 85 people entered the run, making it the high-

est turnout over the years. They had prizes worth R40 000 to be won. The run had five checkpoints, starting at the Villa Luso Restaurant in Phalaborwa. The first stop was at Gravelotte Biltong, 2nd stop at Three Bridges restaurant, and 3rd stop Kalimambo restaurant in Hoedspruit, before they made their way back to Villa Luso. At each stop the participants had to get a card in exchange of a till slip from the local business. At each checkpoint they had a draw where the winner got a prize sponsored by that restaurant. Gravelotte sponsored a biltong basket, The Three Bridges restaurant gave the winners a R600 meal voucher (split into two), and Kalimambo sponsored a drinks hamper. At the end of the run, the bikers handed in their sealed cards and whoever had the biggest poker hand won the first prize. The amazing part was that the winner gets to pick the prize they want instead of the traditional pre-determined prizes for the winners. The aim of the poker run was for the Roadhogs to raise funds through the fee that participants pay to join the run. It’s also an opportunity for the Roadhogs to support the local businesses they use as their checkpoints. ‘Once a biker always a biker’; these are the words Jaco proudly used to describe 67 year old Mike Bond who

each year they have a school run where they collect stationery and donate to different schools. Before Christmas they host a ‘toy run’ where each person buys a toy of choice, the toys are gathered at a central venue before they are donated to different charity organisations for kids. They also lend a hand when-

ever a need arises within their communities. The appearance of any biker is enough to make many people keep their distance. However, looking closely one can clearly see where their hearts are, and that bikers have been harshly judged. Bikers are angels without wings!

SAMGA Mango Day 2019 TZANEEN - The South African Mango Growers’ Association (SAMGA) will host its annual Mango Day this year again at Fairview Hotel, Tzaneen. The event will take place on July 19, and is known for drawing considerable local and international interest. SAMGA is fortunate once again to have an international researcher presenting at the symposium. Dr. Yuval Cohen, of The Volcani Institute in Israel, will be the guest speaker and will present on mango cultivars and trends in Israel’s mango

production industry. This Symposium serves as a forum for the sharing of research carried out, pest and disease management, chemicals, agricultural performance management, and new cultivar selections that are evaluated in all the production areas. Researchers, growers, and processors will not only benefit from the information shared, but will also establish valuable networks. SAMGA’s research projects are selected annually to address current production issues

as well as future needs of the South African Mango Industry. ‘It is therefore essential to look beyond our borders and collaborate with other mango producing countries to find solutions to problems and build a better industry. The annual mango day provides a platform to do this for the future benefit of our industry and its growers’ says Andre Botha SAMGA’s Technical Coordinator. To register for the symposium, contact Christa de la Port. Tel: +27 15 307 3676; email: christa@subtrop.co.za

HOEDSPRUIT - Everyday on my way to work we pass through town between 7:30 and 8 in the morning. I always see a lot of men standing near Le Bamba. When I first noticed this, I thought there was a protest action taking place. I asked the taxi driver what was going on and he explained that these people were there looking for work. Many people who are unemployed wake up every morning to come to town with the hope that they will find work. These men come from the surrounding areas such as Acornhoek, Greenvalley, The Oaks and further away. Many of them have difficulty getting to town every day as they do not have money for the taxi fare. At times some will even come to town five days in a row without any luck of employment. What is interesting is that on the other side of the road there are people selling thatching grass, feather dusters, curios and handmade arts and crafts. For them, waiting, hoping that someone will hire them is not good enough. They wake up each and every day to make a living by selling arts and crafts. While others are waiting to be hired, some are out there hustling on their own. It is interesting to discover how people survive in spite of the high rate of unemployment. This is a countrywide dilemma as unemployment has increased by 27.6% according to Statistics South Africa and the unemployment rate continues to spike.

Safari Guide of the Year 2019 MARAKELE - And so, another Safari Guide of the Year has come to an end. This year’s event was held at NJ MORE Field Guide College, in the Marakele National Park, which set many challenges for the five finalists as it was a new area of operation

for all. The finalists who hail from around the country, attended a weeklong intensive assessment comprising of shooting and rifle handling, guided walking, game drive experience, storytelling, track and sign and birding. The

week was packed with exciting dialogue, fun, nervous moments, outstanding stories around the fire and of course the grand prize giving evening, so well organised by the Safari Guide of the Year Team. Congratulations to Riaan

Fourie from Royal Malewane for winning Safari Guide of the Year 2019! The competition was extremely close only one point

separating the top three places. Consistency and high averages prevailed overall Well done to all the finalists this year! A big thank you to all the Sponsors who helped us take this year’s event to a whole new level.

A traditional African wedding at Nyani Maureen Lahoud HOEDSPRUITSerena and Charles are founders of EverseenSA, an ethical travel company that promotes conscious tourism in South Africa. In June 2019 they brought a delightful Italian couple to the Nyani Cultural Village to celebrate a traditional Shangaan wedding inside the village. Martina and Giorgio are “travel bloggers” and in their blog they tell about the different cultures they encounter through the various traditional wedding ceremonies. They are absolutely aware that the rite has no legal value. It is simply their way of documenting a different culture through the marriage ritual. Their audience adores them for this. On Saturday June 22, the happy couple celebrated their 4th wedding and said it was the most wonderful and joy-

ous experience so far. Roots of Rhythm Tribal dancers and

Maureen Lahoud wish them all the happiness together as they

experience a variety of Cultural wedding vow renewals.

HOEDSPRUIT - The Southern Cross Schools Grade 5 to 7 learners took to the stage to showcase a brilliant version of the musical ‘Grease’ with a modern twist. Maureen Lahoud is a genius when it comes to putting school productions together. When teaching the children from Earth Tots to Grade 7, she is able to characterise and cast roles according to each learner’s individual talents. The learners of Southern Cross Prep have been excited and very enthusiastic to produce a musical, so ‘Grease’ was an ideal choice and what fun it was! The script was rewritten to suit the stage, learners and audience, as well as the school’s values. In the 2019 SCS Preparatory version of ‘Grease’, Sandy does not change to fit into what is deemed to be socially fabulous. SCS’s version had its own ending which was far more 2019 and Sandy maintained her own individuality and character. It was a great show, the music was infectious, the dancers, costumes and acting was vibrant, energetic and simply fantastic! With a show like ‘Grease’ everyone knows the music and the audience could not stop themselves from singing along. What a trip back into time with a modern twist! A superb display of talent!

Massive python autopsy Lilla van Dam

HOEDSPRUIT – On July 3, Donald Strydom, owner of the Kinyonga Reptile Centre, initiated and facilitated an investigative snake autopsy. Snake autopsies are usually only done for veterinary students in the laboratory, so this was a rare occasion where it was performed for the public. The three-metre long female African rock python that was dissected was unfortunately seriously injured in an earthmoving exercise and died shortly after she was brought to the centre.

Donald and one of his assistants, Prince, cut open the unfortunate snake and showed the eager onlookers the heart, the liver and other organs. Donald shared some very interesting facts with us. The heart and other organs are connected to the body by elastic tissue material that enables these organs to move out of the way preventing damage while the python swallows large pray. Donald also showed us the wire worm parasites in its gut (as expected) and while dissecting the bowls he identified feathers which indicate that

her last meal was a bird. For Donald and his team at the reptile centre it is always sad when they are unable to save a snake, but fortunately the death of this beautiful rock python wasn’t for nothing. We got a peak into the insides of one of the world’s most feared reptiles and we actually realised that their blood is also red just like ours. Thanks to Donald and the team for what they do for the community in Hoedspruit and surroundings. Keeping everybody safe and informed about the reptiles and particularly the snakes found in our backyards.

ELEPHANT RUMBLE Alan McSmith

Kruger2Canyon would like to apologise to Alan McSmith for accidentally placing the incorrect article about Voortrekker in the hard copy Volume 17.17. Please find the correct story here on the digital copy.

VOORTREKKER; A DESERT ELEGEND A SUMMARY

Known to scientists, eco-tourism operators and local community members, there is not one documented case of Voortrekker threatening people or exten-sively damaging property. He was not a problem animal and was revered in the pro-elephant conservancies that fell within his home range. He seemed to in-tuitively know how to co-exist with the communities of the desert as he did with the landscape itself. These conservancies (Sorris Sorris, Tsiseb and Otjimoyo), who actually did what they could to prevent the hunt, and their reputable tour-ism operators need to be supported. The site of the alleged damage (absolutely minimal it has to be said) within the Ohungo conservancy close to Omatjete triggered the powers that be to sanc-tion a shady problem animal hunt. I am not for one second suggesting that el-ephants are more important than people, but it is a known fact that corruption derailed the building of a tourist venture and a water reticulation system. Alter-native forms of income, and an opportunity to manage elephant conflict, were therefore lost. This conflict, a perennial issue in this region, seems set to esca-late with the current drought conditions. Government support, should there be any chance of a pro-elephant outcome at Ohungo, is critical. There is a small herd of now terrified elephant (not considered to be desert adapted) in the district of Omatjete, also trying to survive the brutal conditions. This area is outside Voortrekker and his Ugab River herd’s known range limits. But Voortrekker, due to his status and despite both broken tusks, became the scapegoat trophy. A paltry sum of of N$120 000.00

changed hands. Based on this, it’s estimated that the impoverished and drought stricken Omatjete community, desperate for government assistance, profited by N$20 each. How is this remotely logical to justify the hunt? Voortrekker was the figurehead of elephant based eco-tourism in the entire area, which is a sustainable long term revenue stream worth millions of N$ per annum. The Namibian tourism industry lost over N$10 million in cancelled bookings, before the incident even reached mainstream media. A tattered reputation and possible long term tourist boycotts, unless policies change, loom. Again, spare a thought for the pro-elephant conservancies and partners here. He was in his prime, and within a herd of 25, there is now only one remaining breeding bull in southern Damaraland. The great elephant was not only a pioneer in returning to the Ugab for his own kind, but also pioneered a historical partnership with ours. More and more local communities, the very support base of any conservation possibility in Africa, recognised the benefits of elephant-based ecotourism. This despite the possi-bility of conflict. The pro-elephant lobby, largely because of Voortrekker, was gaining momentum for the first time. The elephant was actually showing us the way.

Bringing hope out of hopelessness Good deeds in Finale Mpho Lavhengwa

ACORNHOEK - Mental health issues are matters that we all would like to ignore and sweep under the carpet. These are subjects we never sit down and talk about, whether in our families or in the workplace. That is why a brave young man decided to start the conversation and bring about the changes he wanted to see in and around his community. Themba Trust Manzini of Tshemba Pyschological Services- a clinical psychologist by profession, village boy at heart and a true kasi hero. He is celebrated by the young and the old for the work he does for his community. Born and bred in Welverdiend, a village outside Acornhoek, Themba always believed in healing souls and spreading hope. His interest in mental health and understanding human behaviour was spiked as a young boy when he came across his uncles’ psychology books about human personalities, which he read repeatedly and could never understand. He then took it upon himself to learn more and studied psychology at University. Themba has a finger in so many pies; he is involved in mentorship programmes

where he mentors psychology students in various higher education institutions. He does outreach programmes through his Akani project (akani means build, in ‘XiTsonga). Through this project he brings psychological services to the awareness of the general public. He believes that most people don’t have a good understanding which is why he raises awareness on psychological disorders and mental health issues like depression, anxiety and suicide.‘I am passionate about people, development and community upliftment. There is a lot that needs to be done in terms of development; thus my passion for development encouraged me to move closer to home and do my projects. I came home from the city to bring access to psychological services to the people. I am driven by passion and love for people, that’s why I do what I do. I am not profit orientated, I am encouraged by the positive impact I have in people’s lives’, Themba explained. He opened his practice in 2016 in Acornhoek and a year later another in Bushbuckridge; he hopes to expand Tshemba Pyschological Services both nationally and internationally. Themba is an award winning psychologist and

took home the Best Clinical Psychologist: Mpumalanga Health Excellence Awards in 2018, and also the Tintswalo Hospital CEO Awards in 2018. He currently works at Tintswalo Hospital as well as his private practices. Every chance Themba gets from his busy schedule is spent making people aware of mental disorders like depression and how they affect the individuals, family and friends. He works closely with organisations like the Creseldah Education Fund, Welverdiend Youth Services, Hluvukani Active Generation, Swavana, #LOVE and many more. With the aim to break the barrier that exists between people, psychological disorders, and mental health issues, Tshemba Pyschological Services provide well-being counselling, health talks, coping skills, trauma counselling, stress management and couple & family therapy. In future he would like to increase awareness in churches, schools, businesses and other organisations provided there is a large group to present to. FINALE – After a long time of planning, the Woodhouse College finally came to South Africa all the way from London. The group of college students along with their teacher Linda Doyle visited Finale Village in Limpopo for a good cause. The students representing the college were handpicked by the teacher herself and worked hard to raise funds for the trip to South Africa. The college had the privilege of partnering with the Hoedspruit Hub and Kruger to Canyons Biosphere to work at Maatla and Sekoko Primary schools on a two day project creating playgrounds. The college students worked with the Hoedspruit Hub team and two environmental moni-

tors from the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere based at the schools. Members of the community did their part too by ensuring that the visitors felt welcome, and helped with digging up the grounds, putting together the components as well as cleaning up the schools. The team made playgrounds for both schools. The schools principals, parents, learners and some of the teachers were present to witness as the Woodhouse officially handed over the playground. The learners came in large numbers though they were still on school holidays. The schools are grateful for the project as they did not have the resources to create such facilities for their learners. The grade R teacher was impressed with

the work done. She explained that it would benefit the physical wellbeing of the learners, which is what the curriculum requires because learning is not only in the classroom but outside as well. ‘It was fabulous to work with Hoedspruit Hub and Kruger to Canyons Biosphere and we hope to strengthen the relationship and plan more projects together in the future. We will come back every year and we hope the little ones enjoy the playground,’ said Linda. The learners were already playing and enjoying the day demonstrating how they will use the playground. They couldn’t wait for the schools to reopen so they can play in the playground because they never had anything like this before.

Trails in the bush @ Southern Cross Schools HOEDSPRUIT - Trail running has taken the world by storm! It is one of the fastest growing sports in South Africa – and let’s face it – why not? We do live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, so who would not like to put on some running shoes and navigate an off road route. In the past, Southern Cross School offered and participated in cross country events. A similar idea in some respects, but not as exciting as rocks, riverbeds and cliff faces to navigate around. With the development of the Parkrun and Lowveld Trail Running in Hoedspruit, running became more of a focus within the community and hence within SCS. As time went on, a Hoedspruit interschools league was created. It was a logical move to create and enter a Southern Cross Schools team in the trail running series for the last two years. Growing from strength to strength, 2019 marked the establishment of a 5km trail route on Southern Cross Schools campus, allowing trail runners their own space to train. Such a privilege!

Southern Cross Schools trail runners, alongside runners from three other local schools, competed in the 2019 Pam Golding Estate Series again this year. The series took place on Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, Zandspruit Aero & Bush Estate and Blyde Wildlife Estate, making each run unique and unpredictable. Each trail run consisted of beautiful, challenging and technical 5km trail routes. 5km is no easy feat, especially when running unfamiliar off-road routes where you need to be on

the lookout for potential obstacles as well as route markers. The Southern Cross Schools Preparatory school and College trail running team has done exceptionally well this season with over 20 runners participating. Special mention needs to be made of Jorgia Harwood and Brian Mangena who won many 1st place prizes in the ladies’ and men’s events. As a team, Southern Cross Schools won the Overall Series prize for the winning school. The hard work and dedication certainly paid off.

Check-it-out-mate @ Southern Cross HOEDSPRUIT - Chess is making all the right moves in the right direction! In the last four years, chess at Southern Cross Schools has grown in leaps and bounds. Under the guidance of Mr Francois Coetzee from the College and Mrs Collen Taylor from the Preparatory School, it has slowly started to gain momentum and is

fast become a club that is fun, growing and successful. A school ranking system has made team selections easier and has introduced a sense of competition and achievement amongst the learners. This in turn has led to our learners and teams performing very well at inter-school sport festivals and derbies, showcasing their impressive abilities.

In addition to local competitions, the Mopani District Chess Regional competitions have allowed children to participate in their district, which of course, added to the competitive flavour for many players. We are excited to see how five of our learners perform in the up and coming tournament being held in Phalabor-

wa. This is the last tournament of 2019 and their performance will determine whether they make it through to the Mopani District play-offs. Good luck to Calvin Severin (Gr 9), Louis du Preez (Gr 9), Hasani Maluleke (Gr 9), Martin Severin (Gr 7) and Jonah Rogers (Gr 7). We look forward to ‘checking-it out-mate’!

Young riders shine in George Canèll breaks

Koni Fobbe and Emily Elmendorp, 1st and 3rd in the Interprovincial Championships in George

GEORGE - ‘A good rider can hear his horse speak to him. A great rider can hear his horse whisper.’ Southern Cross Schools is very proud of Emily Elmendorp and Koni Fobbe who took

part in an Eventing Clinic held at Kaapsehoop in March this year. Top coaches for the three eventing disciplines taught and guided 30 young riders from all over South Africa. The aim of the clinic

was to expose riders to other aspects of horse riding (like dressage and cross-country) and to gain some growth for eventing in SA. After taking part in the clinic, both Emily and Koni were selected to ride in the Eventing SA InterProvincials held in George from 21 to 24 June. This was a wonderful opportunity and they were extremely excited to be heading to George! Both Emily and Koni rode borrowed horses at the SA Champs – Interprovincials, held at the George Riding Club. Emily rode a horse called Wow’s Lincoln Park (aka Chester), belonging to Jane Brown. The horse was transported from Johannesburg to George together with Jane and Patrick Brown’s other horses. Koni rode a horse that belongs to Samantha de Villiers. The horse is called Bronze Cross and lives on a farm in George. Koni had never ridden Bronze prior to the competition, except for a short ride at the farm a few days before the show. The SA Champs had a total of 165 entries over the various height classes. Both Emily and Koni competed in the 70cm Eventing Junior class. Eventing consists of three disciplines: dressage, show jumping and cross country. The dressage and show jumping took place on Friday 21 June. Koni received a very good score in her dressage

test and started her competition in 3rd place. Emily also rode a decent dressage test which put her in 5th place at the start of her competition. Koni and Emily rode beautiful clear rounds in the show jumping, and moved into 2nd and 4th place respectively. On Saturday they rode their cross country course. Koni, who had never ridden a cross country course before, did exceptionally well, and rode her course within the time allowed without penalties. Emily also rode extremely well, and due to the excellent cross country and show jumping rounds, both girls finished with only dressage class penalties which was enough to secure Koni a 1st and Emily a 3rd place! The girls were extremely nervous about riding in a competition of this magnitude on unfamiliar horses. They were however very grateful for the opportunity to compete and excited to be a part of the show. The fact that they did so well is an indication of their hard work and commitment to this sport as well as the level of training that they receive from Traci and Shannon Thompson at African Dream Horse Safaris here in Hoedspruit. Our ‘bush girls’ did us all very proud and rode their hearts out – their attitude, horsemanship and absolute passion shone through in everything they did!

the Animal round. In October 2018 Canèll participated as part of the Protea Team in the World Field Archery Championship and won Gold. In April 2019 she participated in the World Indoor Archery Championship and won another Gold. In short, Canèll is a double World champion, holds one World record and two African records and received Protea Colours twice – all of this in just one year.
