ACORNHOEK - R FM 103.2 is a 24 hour broadcasting radio station based in Acornhoek. The station has been running for almost four years now as a non profit company with 26 full time youth volunteers, including the station’s management. The station is the only youth station in the Mpumalanga province and second radio station within the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality. The station has managed to be consistent from day one till to date, said Jonathan Mathebula, programmes manager at the station. He also mentioned that they appreciate the support from all, from listeners and everyone taking part on all programmes. The station has shown growth
and improvement over the years. It encourages young people who are passionate about radio through their talent program. R FM is not only a radio station; they support small businesses by assisting in marketing and advertising. The station also played their part on Mandela Day 18 July 2019 by working closely with Mega City by making donations of funds and food parcels to Ekurhuleni Orphanage. Jonathan also mentioned that one of the challenges faced by the station is lack of coverage in some areas, and they are working on the broadcasting range to reach a large audience. At this stage listeners can stream on the radio app and they are looking forward to branding the station in the upcoming years.

Reports of resurgence of police roadside corruption in Kruger Lowveld region KRUGER LOWVELD - It has been brought to our attention that after several months of relative quiet, there has recently been a resurgence of traffic officers targeting tourists in the region, particularly along the R40, with officers demanding cash payments or threatening ‘victims’ with arrest. In the light of these incidents, Chris Harvie of Hazyview Chamber of Business
and Tourism engaged with provincial traffic authorities on Monday and was given the opportunity to address 200 traffic officers, highlighting the importance of tourism to the region and emphasising why the targeting of tourists by corrupt officers can negatively impact on the image of the country. The Kruger Lowveld antiroadside corruption cards have proven to be effective
against traffic officers attempting to seek a cash payment from an unsuspecting tourist and we recommend that these be handed out to all visitors travelling in the area. We have however discovered that the SAPS telephone numbers published on our cards are no longer manned by officers who are aware of the anti-corruption campaign and we therefore recom-
mend that in the interim our number 0848570348 be written on the card until a card with new numbers is issued. Please note our number is not manned by a police officer but we have dealt with these incidents regularly and can guide the victim and if necessary call the relevant authorities to give assistance. Should you require additional anti-corruption cards, please mail us: linda@klcbt.co.za

...from page1... finished a degree in environmental science, says that she grew up in a nature-based environment and was imbued with so much passion and dedication to conservation, and especially to saving the rhinos, from her father Tim. She believes that education can get us through the current rhino poaching crisis, and together with her partner Chris Adam put together a plan for a rhino awareness tour, starting in Nairobi as Kenya is the northernmost country where rhinos still exist. Cycling was a natural choice as the family had always been keen cyclists. Kayla emphasises that this was not a holiday, they wanted to go
Kayla and Chris decided to use the Kingsley Holgate Foundation’s Rhino Art method to get their conservation message across. This image of scholars with their rhino art captures their involvement. through hardship to share the suffering of the rhinos. Pippa Moolman and Tim joined the Kenya leg of the tour, and Tim again for the final two weeks. Kathryn offered her car as a backup vehicle, and volunteered to drive it as she didn’t want to be left out! Kayla and Chris had decided to use the Kingsley Holgate Foundation’s Rhino Art method to get their message across to the target group, 9 to 10-year olds. The children are given drawings of rhinos to colour in, and they are also asked to give the baby rhino in the picture a name and write a message to the rhino on the drawing, so that the children’s voices can be heard in support of the rhinos.
There were several surprises in store for Chris and Kayla. Some of the children they visited did not know what a rhino was, let alone having seen one, but not only the rhino was a novelty: they had never seen crayons or coloured in pictures before. Kayla remembers being offered shelter by a man with nine children in a village in the middle of nowhere in Zambia. When the children were introduced to Rhino Art, the chiefs of the village came to join them. The grand old men had never seen rhinos or crayons either, and participated with great enthusiasm in the lessons! Kayla, Chris and backup driver Kathryn enthused about how completely safe they had felt, and how warm and friendly the people were. They were invited to people’s homes, and in poverty-stricken rural Tanzania a priest put them up in his own home when they asked for permission to pitch their tents outside his church. In total, they brought their message to 13 schools, and reached out to a range of age groups. Visiting the schools was not plain sailing, and especially in Tanzania the red tape could be a serious obstacle. The teachers were excited and enthusiastic, but needed local government permission to go ahead. In some areas, the plans fell through as schools previously contacted did not respond to Kayla and Chris simply because of poor Tim Parker, (Kayla’s Dad) joined the cycle tour for the Kenya leg and then again at the end. means of communication. The cyclists had a deadline: they wanted to end their tour by joining the Rotary K2C Cycle Tour in support of rhinos. A fitting conclusion to an incredible trip, 71 nights on the road and covering 3655 km in aid of rhinos.

Southern Cross plant seeds of hope on Mandela Day 2019 ‘There can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to help others without expecting anything in return’ – Nelson Mandela
Locals survive crash landing in Free State
Kerstin Nyberg Peart
FRANKFORT OFS – Cessna 206 ZS-NSN, an aircraft belonging to Zandspruit Pty Ltd was on a private conservation mission to relocate wild dogs when it crash landed near Frankfort airport in the Free State on Tuesday
23 July. The pilot did a very good job and managed to take the plane down neatly, and although the aircraft was seriously damaged there were no fatalities or serious injuries. Adverse wind and weather conditions may have been the cause for the serious incident, and there is no suspicion of
engine failure. According to Tracy van den Dunnen, Zandspruit Estate, the pilot, both the passengers and the three wild dogs on board are all unscathed. The fuselage has since been moved to Wonderboom airport in Pretoria.
HOEDSPRUIT - Southern Cross Schools learners spent 67 minutes of their time planting tomato, onion, cabbage, carrot and spinach seeds for Mandela Day. All the learners from Grade R to Grade 12 rolled and made seed containers out of newspaper and filled them with ‘Soil for Soul’ soil donated by Ian Shoebotham. The seeds were planted in these containers and will be cared for in the school’s nursery by our learners until they are seedlings. These will then be donated to TryGive Nxumalo from Acornhoek. Working for the ‘Spring of Hope Foundation’, TryGive is a permaculture educator and Special Project Co-ordinator. One of the special projects with which TryGive works is to supply homesteads with seedlings, encouraging sustainable living and enabling families to feed themselves. He has established over 267 home gardens around his village in Acornhoek, and he also feeds many families from his own garden. Each learner planted approximately 10 seeds, meaning that Southern Cross Schools planted over 1,000 seeds to donate to the project. TryGive gives of his time and energy expecting nothing in return, resulting in families living a more comfortable life, and Southern Cross Schools felt this was a great cause to support and contribute towards.

The lady who gave wings to conservation in South Africa Kerstin Nyberg Peart HOEDSPRUIT - Flying wild dogs to Gorongoza in Mozambique, translocating a group of lions from the Eastern Cape to a private reserve in KwaZulu Natal, or picking up straying turtles from the Agulhas current and moving them to safer waters is all in a day’s work for The Bateleurs, Africa’s first, and probably still the only, private flight support programme for conservation and the environment. Since 1998, the 220 Bateleurs pilots have donated their time and their aircraft for environmental causes, and conducted a vast range of conservation missions across Africa. The Bateleurs is now based in Hoedspruit, and flies annually between 70-100 missions. Everything from oxpeckers to elephants, pangolins to lions, turtles to wild dogs, have been moved by Bateleurs pilots, who not only give of their time, but their personal aircraft and fuel, all free of charge. The missions vary from exposing illegal activities to tracking animals, conducting population surveys, and transporting endangered wildlife between conservation areas. The woman behind this extraordinary organisation was Nora Kreher. She was described by her friend and fellow conservationist Dr Ian Player as ‘a woman of

indomitable courage, deeply motivated to save the little wilderness left in South Africa’. He provided the catalyst for the conservation work to which Nora devoted her life. They shared a passion for environmental conservation, and she assisted him in in several critical situations, including the ‘battle for St Lucia’, a campaign to stop mineral mining on the dunes of the eastern shores of Lake St Lucia. The battle was won and the area is now protected in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, the result of their successful petition which included Nelson Mandela among the signatories. This experience provided the seeds for the establishment of The Bateleurs. During this campaign Ian Player arranged for journalists to be flown over the eastern lake shores, which made Nora Kreher realise the power of aerial observation. The spark was fuelled when Nora visited Alaska with her husband. They stayed with Michael McBride, a pilot,
conservationist and founder of the LightHawk organisation. The pilots who were members of LightHawk freely gave their time and aircraft for environmental and conservation issues. Nora’s experience of the St Lucia campaign and getting to know the work of LightHawk made her decide that she wanted something similar in South Africa. The Bateleurs – ‘Flying for the Environment in Africa’ was born in Johannesburg on 8 September 1998 as a non-profit organisation. Nora worked tirelessly for The Bateleurs. She established a board of enthusiastic directors, and focussed on recruiting pilots to sign up as members. The Bateleurs became known in the community and started flying missions; in the first few years only five or ten per year but quickly building up to the present 70 - 100. Nora was involved with the organisation until her death in 2008, arranged all the missions, knew all the pilots, and was fondly known as the Red Baroness, although she was never actually a pilot herself. The Bateleurs exist because of Nora Kreher. This remarkable woman dedicated her life to wildlife and nature conservation in South Africa, and further into Africa too. In his obituary of Nora, conservation writer James Clarke described her as ‘one of the most effective environmental campaigners in South Africa’, and The Bateleurs as ‘an environmental air force which has had a profound effect on the conservation tactics in southern Africa’.

KRUGER TO CANYON Kayla Parker and Christophe Adam rode in the Rotary K2C Cycle Tour as the final stage of their momentous 4,000 km journey from Nairobi, Kenya, the northernmost country where rhinos are found in the rest of Africa, to Hoedspruit, the centre of rhino conservation. I asked Kayla why she wanted to ride in the Rotary K2C Cycle Tour after such a long journey and she said excitedly,” It was always the plan to ride the last 100 kms on 20 July 2019 to fin-
ish our epic journey. I worked my whole trip backwards from the K2C to ensure that we could do it. We would arrive in Hoedspruit the day before and ride in the tour on the last day.” She told me that she had been inspired to ride in the tour by her dad’s participation in the past four tours, and the hype at the end of his ride at the finishing line at Swadini where the whole wildlife community of Hoedspruit comes together. “I knew implicitly then, that was how I wanted to end our journey - riding with 100 riders and my dad, all contributing to saving the rhino.”
Christophe Adam and Kayla Parker spotted at the end of the Rotary K2C Cycle Tour.
The tour traverses the private reserves Timbavati, Thornybush and Kapama, and Blue Canyon Conservancy, and this completed her dream. I asked her to explain what lessons she had learnt along the route and she said that kindness was foremost -“people living in absolute poverty welcomed us and shared their lives and homes with us. I was overwhelmed.” Her second lesson was perseverance and endurance. She said “because of my commitment I had no choice but to get packing and up and riding in the morning in the rain, the wind and the cold and the wet. If I lost my cool, I had to remind myself that each step I took was towards my objective and Christophe was my support rider.” “The most amazing thing I experienced on the trip was that many people along the way did not see poaching as wrong and this was the first time they had heard it. I know we left many thinking after our talk of the disastrous damage caused by rhino poaching”. Kayla certainly displays all the qualities we seek in a friend of Rotary. What an amazing experience and Hoedspruit Rotary are proud to have shared it with Kayla and Christophe.

HOEDSPRUIT - In both the Prep School and the College, our learners participate in a variety of clubs and cultural activities. There is a guide as to what happens each term but it is never set in stone. We believe it is important to offer a variety of activities and new opportunities for our learners. Greer Leo Smith, a local resident, has recently earned her 3rd South African blazer. She has played tennis, participated in horse riding and recently fly fishing has been added to her South African accolades. With such talent right on our doorstep, we asked her if she would be interested in teaching some of our Prep School learners how to fly fish, and hence our Fly Fishing Club was founded. The Club has had an exciting time so far. They have been concentrating on learning how to cast, take care of their equipment, technique and even learning how to tie their own flies. Greer kindly gave up her time and knowledge and walked them through the processes. The learners have enjoyed every minute and have learnt a great deal. Thank you Greer. With the basics in place, the Fly Fishing Club is putting all they have learnt into practice. Our young experienced and

Give it all you’ve got #lionheart !
Daniel and ‘Super Dad’ Neels Otto took part with everything they had in the intrepid obstacle race!
Warrior Ric ORIGSTADT - We all know the saying, ‘It is better to give, than to receive’. After last Saturday’s Farm Obstacle Race at Marlotti Farm Venue, I finally got it: ‘You receive a whole lot more when you give’. Last Saturday was what I call a ‘game changer’ – for many reasons. It was not the first time Marina and Neels Otto, the Van Heerden family, and their friends from the Lydenburg to Hoedspruit farming communities, put on a fundraiser to help six year old Daniel Otto, who suffers from congenital muscular dystrophy. However, the Farm Obstacle Race was the first ever of its kind that used farm elements like bales of hay, irrigation dams, tractors and animals! The first batch was due to start at 9am but some Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) enthusiasts and supporters of the Lion Heart Challenge arrived from 6am wearing big jackets and hoodies. With a paper take-away cup filled with strong black coffee, I enjoyed the pre-event beats played by Lydenburg DJ, Graham, who was warming up in the winter morning as he began to pump up the volume into the morning air. Thirty minutes before the start of the race, Course Director, Koos van Heerden, called me over to jump onto the back of his quad bike for a reconnaissance of the routes and
obstacles. Because we were pressed for time, Koos guided me through the farm in record speed to show me some of the trails and premier obstacles. There were the usual OCR log carries, tyre pulls and treacherous mountain climbs for the 10km racers. Koos showed me the 200 m x 50 m dam that racers would need to swim across, and two additional river crossings that each participant would have to endure in the cold. The temperatures made me respect how resilient our Warriors in this OCR sport are. We jumped back on the quad bike, and zipped back to the start with five minutes to spare. The first batch represented our 10km individuals followed
by our 10km teams. My next batch was the only batch leaving from a unique location on the farm about 150 meters from the established start. It was Daniel’s batch. All of our young soldiers from 2-10 years old were making their way to the kiddies section of the race venue where I had the privilege to send them off, but not before a motivational talk on the power of faith. It’s always special for me to speak to the young ones because they are willing and able, even though they may have never attempted anything like this before. The first two young warrior soldiers to set off were Daniel and his younger brother Marcus. With Daniel screaming ‘Be Brave,’ ‘Warrior’ and ‘Right Here’, he took off with his dad, Neels, who cradled him in his arms like a sergeant with his recruit ready for battle. I’ll never forget that moment as Neels helped his brave son, Daniel, over the first obstacle with his brother Marcus in tow. The other children followed two-by-two over obstacles in a 500 meter loop, and I headed back to send off the 10km Teams, and the 5km and 2km Individuals and Teams, in the subsequent morning batches with temperatures quickly rising above 15 degrees. We ended the Farm Obstacle Race like no other OCR event. Besides the ciders, homemade ginger beer, “brandewynne”, Yankees (corn dogs) and hamburgers, there were several tear jerking moments of ad hoc donations, special prizes from sponsors and individuals, including a homemade knife from one of the participants from Lydenburg that was auctioned for R3,500! The
clincher was when Daniel’s mother, Marina Otto, accepted the challenge to share her gratitude to all of the people and organisations that supported the event. She barely got through the long list, but managed to mention everyone while each of us warriors (men and women) listening to her with tears rolling down our faces. The farm communities from Lydenburg to Hoedspruit, even White River showed up last Saturday for the Farm Obstacle Race in support of the Lion Heart Challenge for Daniel because they know that you always receive more when you give it all you’ve got! And then there were more obstacles!
