Antoinette Ngwenya: changing lives Kerstin Nyberg Peart
Photograph supplied by Hlokomela
A job advert in Kruger2Canyon News caught Antoinette’s eye in early 2005: a new organisation called Hlokomela was looking for an HIV/AIDS coordinator. She applied, was interviewed and offered the job, and as she herself says – ‘the rest is history’. Fourteen years later Antoinette is the programme manager and a cornerstone of the organisation. She has been instrumental in bringing about a huge change in the conditions of farm workers, and especially migrants, on the fruit farms in the area. Antoinette has since her early youth been aware of the need for HIV and AIDS education as her stepmother was involved in a research programme on adolescent health in the Acornhoek area. The programme was run by the then Director of Wits Rural Facility, Professor John Gear, who by coincidence is now Deputy Chairperson of Hlokomela’s Board of Trustees. Adolescent girls and boys in her community were exposed to the research, and so Antoinette and her siblings received a sound education in sexual and reproductive health. Antoinette’s first years at Hlokomela were spent going out to farms, and educating the farm workers who had no access to health facilities, and no knowledge of contraceptive methods. The practice of transactional sex promoted the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, as did the prac-

tice of multiple partners. She had to tackle difficult social issues such as the vulnerability of women workers. The male supervisors had all the power and would often demand sex from the women in return for a job on their teams. Antoinette talked to them, and asked how they would feel if this happened to their daughters on another farm. She spread the message that women have a right to get a job like anybody else, without paying with their bodies. After three years of being at the compounds at the crack of dawn to educate the workers, Antoinette moved on to run a programme involving migrant workers, making sure that they had access to health care and were not discriminated against. Eventually she was promoted to manage five projects, each with its own coordinator. Antoinette finds it difficult to identify what is the best part of her job: there is so much. She finds the logistics of her present job a challenge which she at first was reluctant to take on, but now regards as just part of the job. The rewards are many: the impact on farm workers’ lives; the acceptance by the farmers, who now firmly believe in and support Hlokomela; the dramatic fall in the incidence of HIV. She misses the direct contact she had with people in the early days, and treasures the times when she bumps into somebody whom she had an opportunity to help then, and who still remembers her.

FarmWatch Fundraiser
The Hoedspruit Hub hosted a successful Open Day on August 24 when they were open to the public to showcase the value of the training and skills development they offer. The garden tour, which began at 08:00, was presented by the Hub team and packed with valuable agricultural information. A compost making workshop was also presented as well as a demonstration of the Hoedspruit Hub app. Hlokomela also presented their sustainable funding models that are being developed
along with their 2018 annual report. Primary schools took part in a Lego competition, and the high schools competed in an Agri Quiz that was monitored by the Hub and K2C team. Traditional Xibelana dances kept the audience entertained while the Nourish food truck and Tina’s Mozambique truck sold delicious fresh food and drinks. Organic onions, spinach and carrots were sold to the public, packaged in biodegradable plastic free packaging. The open day was an informative eye opener and enjoyed by all who attended.
Every Thursday, 30 children from local communities take part in the Green Kidz afterschool programme, run by and based at Nourish, and supported by Rhino Revolution. Many of the children know nothing about their wildlife heritage, and the weekly three-hour lessons give them an introduction to the environment and conservation. On Thursday August 15th Donald Strydom from the Kinjonga Reptile Park joined the children at Nourish to give them a lesson on Snakes,
Scorpions and Spiders. The team has previously spoken to the children about the bad reputation snakes have within the communities, and Donald kindly brought a milk snake for them to see, handle, and learn more about. Most of the children calmly handled both scorpion and spider, and bravely interacted throughout the afternoon during the snake demonstration. Rhino Revolution would like to thank Donald Strydom for joining us at Nourish. These kind of hands-on opportunities make so much of a difference when providing conservation through education!

BobBob’s road to seeing again Brass Brassett When you think you’ve reached the end of a long road and then the doctor tells you you’ve only turned a corner... On 15 August, BobBob finally underwent surgery at the Pretoria Eye Institute. As was his plan, eminent eye surgeon, Dr Neil Cornelius, took the few remaining good stem cells from BobBob’s right eye and grafted them onto his ‘good’ left eye. An amniotic membrane was then used to cover the eye to promote healing, but far from being the end of a long road, we learnt that this was just the beginning! Early next year, when the health of Bobby’s eye has improved, Dr Cornelius will, as he put it, ‘take layers off the eye, like peeing an onion, until we reach a suitably healthy layer’.
BobBob with Dr Neil Cornelius, at the Eye Institute in Pretoria on 15 August.
Once that exposed layer settles, then and only then, would Bob have a chance of success with a corneal transplant, which would give him decent vision. As more people join BobBob
on his journey we are humbled by their generosity: Ashton’s Shuttles and Transfers have been incredible in providing complimentary return travel for Bob and me, as well as Obas and Zani Geyer who have
provided free accommodation in Pretoria. Such compassion and generosity is invaluable. Thanks to everyone standing by Bobby on his journey; we have not arrived at the end station yet.

BIG NEWS
Hoedspruit’s Protected Area Expansion Project at risk Open letter by Concerned Stakeholders Concerned stakeholders are up in arms about a 120ha citrus farm that has been approved by LEDET (Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism) on the border of the Klaserie and Timbavati private reserves. Why is the bigger picture for the region so blatantly disregarded in favour of an
inappropriate agricultural development? How would a citrus farm, which not only falls within a Protected Areas Buffer Zone, borders a Protected Area, occurs on an important river, but also occurs on land classified as a Critical Biodiversity Area (CBA) benefit the surrounding landscape? How will a citrus farm equip the landscape in order to survive several years of severe drought? How can the deliberate degradation of a protected
area through the cumulative impacts of excessive water extraction and the addition of pesticides, chemicals and other pollutants be justified? This water thirsty development which has been approved on the drought sensitive Klaserie River is not only going to have a direct negative impact on the aquatic ecosystem, but also change animal movements within the reserve. Furthermore, an attractant such as citrus will most certainly

result in conflict with wildlife such as elephants, porcupines, warthogs and baboons, which will end up becoming ‘problem animals’. We should be asking ourselves if small scale economic gain should override the importance of protecting South Africa’s largest intact protected area, the Greater Kruger. Despite the environmental concerns highlighted during the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process,
the citrus farm development has been authorised. LEDET clearly appears to be disregarding its mandate to secure an ecologically functional landscape, and this is a real threat to vital ecosystem goods and services necessary for human well-being in the region. The development will surely derail the plan of expanding the APNR to Hoedspruit and reduce the opportunity for the region to become a cornerstone for conservation. The EIA is incorrect in claiming that the 120ha piece of land that is about to be irreversibly destroyed by planting citrus trees is not unique. Although similar land types are relatively widespread throughout the Lowveld, any damage to these areas highlights the lack of understanding of the urgency to protect them and keep them intact. For an ecosystem to function properly it must not be fragmented as this reduces its resilience and leads to environmental collapse. This approval shows a general lack of understanding of how the environmental impacts of one development at a time will figuratively chip away at the value system of the Greater Kruger and the APNR. This cumulative effect of negative impacts is equivalent to ‘death by a thousand cuts’ for our environment. There has to come a time when the importance of safeguarding our natural environ-

ment takes preference to the weconomic benefit of a selected few. Hoedspruit, as a community who knows the true value of the veld and all that it entails, it is time you stand up to help protect it. Make your voices heard in this and future EIAs. Let your dedication to the cause help fuel the passionate individuals who are at the forefront of safeguarding our fragile environment by preventing its destruction and fragmentation. Without your voices, inappropriate developments will destroy South Africa’s last remaining natural area. Let your dedication be the campfire stories for generations to come. CELEBRATING
Celebrating Women’s Month
Jeannie de Beer Vorster & Fruitful Living Health Shop Tinyiko Makhubela
Born in Zimbabwe and raised in Hoedspruit. Jeanie showed an interest in health from a young age. By the age of 12 she had already chosen to eliminate several unhealthy items from her diet, due to meeting someone who was a good example of healthy living. After high school Jeanie joined a Christian touring group for two years. She then studied health promotion at Helderberg College in Somerset West for four years, where she opened a plant based eatery for a few years. On a two-year stint to South Korea to teach English as missionary work with her husband, Jeanie pursued her health food passion despite the many obstacles of being in a foreign country. On returning to South Africa they moved back to Hoedspruit. She dabbled a bit in the printing business, then she
and her best friend from high school started Elly Elly Nice (gifts, bath products and lingerie etc), however her heart was always into health and she finally returned to what she was called to do. Jeannie is the owner of the local Hoedspruit health shop - Fruitful Living. The shop is fully plant based and has everything you can find in the cities and more. She says she wants people to be as healthy as possible and have access to health no matter where they live. She currently employs four assistants in her shop and manufacturing kitchen. The health shop serves Hoedspruit town and extends to surrounding areas. Over the last few years she has extended her training abroad by doing Raw Chef intensives in California USA, as well as in Thailand and online.
Fruitful Living serves takeaways on Thursdays and Fridays and has an outdoor seated area for patrons to utilise on these days if desired. Jeannie does health talks and plant based cooking demos across the country, and does consultations as well to train chefs in plant based cooking and menus. Last year she assisted Balducci’s at the Cape Town waterfront to do just that. She is currently working towards opening a pop-up cooking school that will provide morning and afternoon classes for all levels of learners. The cooking school will also provide training for lodges who want to introduce or expand into plant based cuisine for their guests. Fruitful Living Health Shop - helping you be healthy by choice and not by chance.
DAKTARI is Michèle’s entire purpose and priority were dismayed by the lack of concern for the environment these children displayed. An opportunity to do more opened up when their friends, owners of Wait A Little Horseback Safaris, offered them the use of a bush camp and adjacent land for their project. They contacted local schools, and began by inviting children to the bush camp for weekends to find out what was missing in their education. On the basis of this, they built an education programme: the DAKTARI bush school was born. Most of the children not only had no knowledge of animals but were scared of them. Michèle had experience of hand raising orphaned animals, and an animal orphanage was added to the bush school to give the children an opportunity to interact with animals. Michèle and Ian contacted the Department of Education and LEDET to formalise the arrangement, and with their approval arranged a programme for children to spend a week at DAKTARI
for nature education. The bush school started in 2006 and during that year 100 children attended. This has grown to 350 per year, and by now nearly 5000 children have received exposure to wildlife and nature education. DAKTARI also mentors eco-clubs in the schools to reach more children and extend their knowledge. 2000 volunteers from all over the world have come to DAKTARI to teach, and there are now six long term volunteers and four Environmental Monitors from the K2C Biosphere working in different capacities at DAKTARI. Michèle is very aware of the responsibility of running a charity. You are dealing with other people’s money and can’t allow yourself to fail. She has plans for ways of having a bigger impact and doing more work with the community. Michèle’s priority in life is DAKTARI, everything else comes second.
Geraldine Tintinger - a colourful one Cynthia Fagan
Kerstin Nyberg Peart ‘I am DAKTARI, rather than Michèle Merrifield’. Michèle was initially reluctant to be interviewed as she didn’t want to take centre stage: her life, purpose and priority is the charity she and her husband Ian started over 10 years ago. Michèle came from her native France to South Africa in 1998, little knowing that this visit would change her life. She caught a bad dose of khaki fever, but as well as a husband she also found kindness, another country and culture, a different way of living. Ian and Michèle married in early 2000; a new millennium and a totally new life. It took a few years for Michèle to find her true purpose in life, but now she knows that she came here for a reason, and feels she has been guided all the way. The turning point came when Michèle and Ian met a local boy who knew nothing about his wildlife heritage, and this triggered the idea of starting a bush school for children in the area. They began by taking children to Moholoholo and the Snake Park, and
Geraldine is a born-and-bred Hoedspruit girl, who grew up in this vibrant cosmopolitan town. She comes from an artistic family and has developed her own strong artistic talents. She is a hands-on mother of four girls and currently works at Suncatchers Hot Air Ballooning. On a visit to the Philippines last year she came across many new and interesting arty ideas. One idea that she found particularly intriguing is the art of hair wrapping. Being a perfectionist in everything she does Geraldine researched and practiced hair wrapping until she mastered the art, which she is now ready to share with us. Hair wrapping is a means to add colour and individuality to your own hair without doing any damage. Geraldine will be practicing her art at the Hoedspruit Farmers’ Market and other local outlets. Using natural cotton, bamboo threads and beads, each wrap is individual, and Geraldine’s wraps are washable and easy to maintain. Be sure to keep up with this trend, popular in Cape Town and Johannesburg, by visiting Geraldine at the Farmers’ Market in September.

Sue, silk and Southern Cross Kerstin Nyberg Peart
Sue Godding came to Hoedspruit with her husband 25 years ago to manage Jackalberry Lodge in the Thornybush Reserve, but she has made a huge impact on our community in completely different fields. Godding&Godding silk products is an established local brand, known by locals and tourists alike. Sue was also a driving force in taking Southern Cross Schools from a far-flung dream into the successful establishment it is today. Sue and Kevin managed Jackalberry Lodge for nine years, by which time they had started a family and needed to think about schooling for their two daughters. In 1999, Sue called a meeting to discuss establishing an English medium school in the area and was surprised by the response: about 60 families turned up. Heidi Lee Smith was among them and offered her support, a few more ladies joined in, as well as Jumbo Williams, who was to be the first headmaster. Sue’s employers, Alan Mansfield and Arnold Fair, provided seed capital; Sue and Heidi worked round the clock for months, and the school opened in 2002 with 43 children. Although Sue was never involved in the running of the school she is still on the Board of Trustees. The school is a unique asset to the community and numerous people from across southern Africa and even the world have moved to Hoedspruit to bring their children to this unique and successful nature-based school with its environmental ethos. Managing an upmarket lodge and having a family was complicated, and together with a friend who was involved in silkworm farming Sue started looking for other options. They bought the farm which is now 24° South and started the silk business there, but silkworm farming turned out to be problematic, and the silk was instead imported. The first products were silk filled duvets and other bedroom items, but Sue became interested in other uses for silk and discovered its beneficial properties in skin care. She wanted to ‘Africanise’ the silk by pairing it with marula, rooibos, aloe and baobab, and with the help of a small company in Johannesburg she got the skin care products off the ground, and her staff trained to manufacture everything on site. Eight years ago the silk products were rebranded as Godding&Godding, with their present image. She now employs 24 ladies in the shops, factory and spa, the products are sold in three dedicated shops, as well as in various gift shops, and she also supplies hospitality items to lodges and spas. Sue is a keen naturalist and conservationist, and she believes that you should ‘walk the talk’. Skin care is a wasteful industry, she is conscious of its footprint, and is introducing a new range packaged in refillable glass containers: Godding&Godding Gold. The range covers everything needed for daily use, and is suitable for all skin types and ages. The face cream is already available, and the other products will be rolled out over the next two months and launched country wide. A good, natural, environmentally friendly option!
CelebratingWomen’s Month Lend me your ears - Sele Komana
Tinyiko Makhubela Maselesele Komana was raised in Ga-Sekororo, and educated at Hoedspruit Christian School and Uplands College in White River prior to completing her matric in Modjadjieskloof. In 2013, she was accepted at the University of Cape Town to study audiology, and obtained her degree in 2017. Sele has
always had a heart for Limpopo, but there is currently no budget to create posts for allied professionals such as audiologists, which creates a gap and shortage in the health sector. ‘I am so excited to announce the opening of SELMED Audiology private practice. We are a semi - mobile practice, which allows us to bring our services to isolated communities in and around the region. We aim to provide excellent service to our clients at affordable prices. Our goal is also to educate caregivers and children on ear care and hygiene, and to educate parents on the importance of early childhood hearing loss detection and intervention,’ says Sele. ‘Caregivers and teachers are truly the biggest asset to the health profession and we believe that if we educate caregivers to know what to look for and how to support their child, only then can we truly start making a difference in the lives of children’. Sele is passionate about paediatrics as she believes that children are the most vulnerable and exposed to environments and situations that they often can’t understand yet. SELMED Audiology will be working with BGM Audiologists in Polokwane to bring Good Ears For Future Leaders to schools in and around Tzaneen, Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa. Children with listening difficulties due to hearing loss or auditory processing problems continue to be under-identified. What Sele looks forward to most is making a difference in the lives of people living with a hearing impairment. NEWS & VIEWS
Trees in Landscapes - Paint Night at SCS The 13 painters who explored and took up new challenges at this year’s Southern Cross Schools ‘Paint Night’ had a superb evening. Last year the theme was ‘painting water in landscapes’. This year, the theme was ‘Trees in Landscapes’ which was a little more intricate and detailed. With Alexander Bradford’s guidance, instruction and advice, some great art works were produced by the painters. Each budding artist was given a blank canvas, equipment and they selected an idea which they chose to replicate. Alexander is the College Art teacher and her introduction at the beginning of the evening, her keen eye for detail, and her creative flair, really makes the evening not only a fun one, but also informative and educational. Lots of chatter, laughter and talking about how ‘Paint Night’ needs to be held more often, was heard around the art tables. A glass of good wine or a cup of coffee while painting, is also very therapeutic. It will be interesting to see what the 2020 theme is and we look forward to yet another entertaining evening. We have only 20 spots available, so look out for the advert on Facebook and other social media platforms and come and join us.
Paint night results seen here with lots of smiles from all the artists.

Do you love mangoes, bananas and coffee? You have bats to thank for that! Bats are unsung heroes of nature, often misunderstood and feared by people, they play a vital role in keeping ecosystems healthy. From pollination and seed dispersal to keeping insect populations in check, we have bats to thank for all of that. Bats around the world play crucial ecological roles that support ecosystem health and human economies. Many bat species consume vast amounts of insects, including some of the most damaging agricultural pests. A single bat can eat up to 1,200 mosquito-sized insects every hour, and each bat usually eats 6,000 to 8,000 insects every night! Fruit eating bats pollinate many valuable plants, ensuring the production of fruits that support not just local economies, but diverse animal populations too. We have a lot to be grateful for because of the existence of bats. Due to their diet, fruit eating bats also act as seed dispersers, which they do through their faeces. Overall, these animals are irreplaceable in sustaining their forest habitats, which would simply disappear without them. So, I have decided to run 50 miles for bat conservation and to raise awareness about the importance of bats. I’m batty enough to run the Karkloof 50 Miler on 21 September 2019 in support of bats! But I need your help. I’m raising money for ReWild NPC, a local NGO in Phalaborwa. They do amazing work to rescue and rehabilitate bats, as well as to educate the public on the importance of bats. ReWild NPC helps wildlife that have been injured or orphaned and, when they are ready, return them to the wild. But they do far more than this!
They help with human-bat conflict resolution, they help farmers to use bats to control crop pests, they make bat houses
