Wild Shots student wins international competition!

Wild Shots Outreach student Kgaugelo Neville Ngomane has won The Young Environmental Photographer of the Year award in the international CIWEM (Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management) photography competition! His powerful image of a rhino dehorning, ‘Desperate Measures’, was picked from more than 4,000 international entries by the judges, who commended its storytelling and photographic merit. The judges said ‘When his photo flashed up on screen, there was a sharp intake of breath around the judging room; it’s such a powerful image’. On learning that he’d won, Neville said “Winning this competition means a lot, because I love photography. But I don’t just want to win, I want to make a difference. It is not easy to watch such an iconic animal being dehorned. I hope this picture will make a lot of people see what we have to do to save our rhinos and it will make them support conservation”. Neville, aged 19 and currently unemployed, is a graduate of Wild Shots Outreach. This Hoedspruit-based NPO’s aim is to engage young people from disadvantaged communities in wildlife and wild places through photography. The programme prioritises high school students from government schools and unemployed young people bordering the Greater Kruger Park, South Africa. Despite living right next door to a National Park, 99% of these young people have never had access to their natural heritage and have never seen Africa’s iconic wildlife. Wild Shots Outreach teaches new skills, providing a ‘focus’ and introduction to the natural world, and helps inspire and raise the aspirations of these learners – the conservationists of tomorrow. Wild Shots won South Africa’s prestigious SANParks Kudu Award for ‘Environmental education and capacity building’ in 2017. Neville Ngomane’s dramatic image of a rhino dehorning, ‘Desperate Measures’ has won him The Wild Shots Outreach founder and diYoung Environmental Photographer of the Year Award in the international CIWEM (Chartered Insti- rector Mike Kendrick says ‘This award tute of Water and Environmental Management) photography competition! is a fantastic accolade for Neville, for

Wild Shots Outreach, for the communities and all the young people I work with. Can we hope that images like Neville’s will capture the imaginations of communities like his, which border the Greater Kruger Park? And can photos like this bring people a better understanding of the drastic measures being used to conserve the iconic wildlife which we hold so precious? The young people I work with have developed pride in their images, pride in their stories, pride in themselves and a pride in their natural heritage – a natural heritage which has previously been hard for them to access.’ Mike would like to express his gratitude to Rhino Revolution, a rhino conservation charity which had the foresight and vision to invite Wild Shots Outreach students to attend and document the dehorning of their wild rhinos on a private reserve outside Hoedspuit. Although no doubt a traumatic experience for the rhino, dehorning is like cutting one’s fingernails and the horn will grow back. Desperate times call for desperate measures and dehorning is a last-ditch attempt to deter the poaching of rhinos. For more information: www.wildshotsoutreach.com

The story of little Dianné heart condition R7000 REWARD

on call assisted us. During the examination the Doctor looked a bit concerned and asked if we knew that Dianné has a murmur on her heart. She could also hear it clearly on her back – and according to the doctor we had to act quickly to see a Paediatrician. Luckily Dr. Louw Du Toit could see us the next day – after a thorough examination we were referred to a Paediatric Cardiologist at the Unitas Hospital in Pretoria who diagnosed Dianné with a Post Ductal Coarctation of the Aorta complicated with systemic hypertension (Narrowing of the Aorta) in children of her age it should have a width greater than 24mm – hers starts at 12mm and gradually goes to a low 2,8mm. We are so blessed that all other aspects of the heart functions are normal – however the Doctors are in awe that she has not shown any symptoms since birth and that Doctors and Paediatricians did not pick this up at Birth. According to the Heart Foundation of South Africa, 1 out of 100 children are born with CHD (Congenital Heart Defects) and about 64% in South Africa go undetected until the child shows significant symptoms. Thank goodness we found this out now as children bounce back quickly and we believe that she will be able to have a very normal and happy life after the surgery. We immediately spoke to our Medical Aid Broker when I returned from Pretoria (as we have just joined a new medical aid 1 week before all of this transpired). Unfortunately, due to us being on a exclusion period of 3 months they do not cover us at all and to add to this we disclosed her reports and they have now placed Dianné on a further 12 month exclusion for anything heart related. In desperation we had to start looking at all options to try and raise the funds needed

for the surgery. We decided to seek a second opinion and after a lot of research found Dr. Kenny Govendrageloo at the Sunninghill Hospital (Paediatric Cardiologist), and he has been AMAZING. When he heard that our Medical Aid would not assist, he arranged for us to get almost 300% reduction in price for the entire operation and hospital stay. Only 24hours after creating her page on Facebook: A little Help 4 a little Heart we received a whopping R120 000 towards her fund – we were absolutely moved by this and cannot thank the community, our friends and family enough! Another 48hours and more funding was received by close friends and family who rallied behind us. We need another R100 000 for the remaining costs but are in collaboration with the Hoedspruit Diepsee Hengel Club who kindly offered to join forces with us to create a fundraising evening on 27 September. South African musicians will be performing – the R50.00 cover charge or whatever guests would like to pay extra goes towards Dianné. We are also planning a small festival within the next month. Whatever funds we do not use we would like to donate to another special Heart Warrior who needs treatment. We also still require an area for our music festival (a school sport ground or similar) – with ablution facilities. We do have a lot of great sponsors such as Primos Gin who will assist with putting up a great (Woodstock) – ‘HOEDSTOCK’ vibe - we are busy trying to put this together as we speak and have a few very well-known Musicians who we are speaking to about dates and availability. The hospital is booked and she will be admitted on the 5th November to have her surgery on the morning of the 6th.

Vandalism in Kampersrus Since acquiring a property at the foot of Mariepskop, in Kampersrus, Steve and Lelanie Trollip have done all they can to remove invasive exotic plants and replant indigenous; in fact they have planted over 5000 trees since 2003. Twelve years ago, Steve planted an avenue of rare acacia burkeii (black monkey thorn) leading up to the gate of Amafu Forest Lodge. These magnificent trees were planted in concrete pots which were submerged in the ground. Due to the fact that their roots were semirestricted, the trees ended up growing into the most striking giant bonsai’s. ‘Three months ago, we noticed that four of these majestic trees had been maliciously cut off at the ground. Although devastated, we accepted the fact that this was a ‘one-off’ occurrence and whoever had done this had proved their point,’ says Steve. However, this was not the end and during the course of the night on the 17 September, the vandal returned to mow down another 15 of these beautiful acacias. Ten were cut down to the ground and the other five were cut 80% through their stems. The five, barely hanging on, are still showing signs of life and Steve is hoping to nurture them back to life. Steve is offering a R5000 reward for any information leading to an arrest and a wonderful friend from

Hoedspruit has offered an extra R2000 to the original amount increasing the reward to R7000. After some thought and discussion, Amafu would like to turn this terrible incident into a positive small community project whereby people can come and help plant trees in the not-too-distant future. As this is only in the planning stages, we will keep the community updated as to how and when this idea will come to fruition. CONTACT: Vanessa 0711902827 or Steve 0827718497 for any information regarding this terrible example of vandalism and malicious damage to property!

BIG NEWS

Climb in aid of Wild Bird Trust Ludwig Spies

Every year Campfire Academy leads a 9-Biome Overland Exploration that takes a group of FGASA students around Southern Africa to experience the full ecological richness of the region. This year, we went bigger with #Camp2Kili2019, travelling from Hoedspruit to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro. Our route took us from South Africa to Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania and Mozambique. The vision of a Kilimanjaro trek presented us with the opportunity to draw attention to a worthy cause. As direct beneficiaries of nature, poised to go on tour to enjoy Africa’s natural wonders, we decided that we had to make it count towards conservation. We considered various ideas suggested by the destinations on our route. Then, almost perchance, we came to learn of the work of the Wild Bird Trust and the Okavango Wilderness Project (OWP) through the documentary film Into the Okavango. Launched in 2014, the project seeks to assess, monitor and maintain the ecological health of the Okavango River Basin. Expeditions along the major river systems of the basin collected baseline data on water quality, flow rates and biodiversity to develop an action plan for the sustainable management of the system. In some cases, surveys were done on unbroken transects that extended hundreds of kilometres from Angola to Botswana. ‘The Delta is the ultimate wildlife heaven. We often focus on saving iconic species but that isn’t sustainable without conserving healthy habitats,’ says Emmeline Lebrun, a Campfire graduate on the tour who works in the Hoedspruit area as a na-

Hoedspruit Malaria ALERT Malaria tips shared by Drs Cleve and Belinda McIntosh 1) If you don’t get bitten, you can’t get malaria. • • •

Sleep under a mosquito net. Wear long pants and socks at dusk and dawn. Mosquitoes love ankles. Malaria mosquitoes bite most at cool times of the day. Throw out stagnant water around your home regularly.

2) Don’t ignore a fever combined with a headache and any linked symptoms of digestion such as nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea.

Know the symptoms of malaria: • • • ture guide. The OWP team’s primary mode of transport were mokoros, the iconic traditional punting canoe of the Okavango. At times, the waterflow was not sufficient to carry the mokoros, necessitating the team to drag them fully loaded with their equipment for up to two weeks. It was this determination that captured our attention and inspired us to dedicate our efforts towards making a tangible contribution to their ongoing work. We organised the Bird Nerds Quiz in May to establish a fundraising base and spark awareness within the Hoedspruit community. With assistance from Simone Oranje-De Kock and Soné Janson, marketing creatives and friends of Campfire, we then developed TWO BIRDS | ONE MOUNTAIN, a marketing-conservation exchange that took nine local

and international stakeholder brands with us across Africa on wing banners sponsored by Expand A Sign. The price for their ticket was a donation to the Wild Bird Trust via our campaign’s GoFundMe account. We are truly grateful for the participation of Imagine Africa Safaris, RE/MAX Wildlife Properties, Ambrosia Citrus Estates, Sun Destinations, African Retreats, Last Frontier Adventures, Safariresor.se and Khaki Fever Hoedspruit. Furthermore, we are exceptionally proud of our students who campaigned tirelessly through their networks of influence to raise funds and awareness across the globe. ‘It felt so special to be a voice for the Wild Bird Trust. Our banners drew a lot of attention during the tour and I cherish the opportunity we had to share the message of holistic, sustainable conversation with people

face-to-face,’ says Karen Bongrain, Campfire graduate and programme volunteer. MarieHortense Vincent, also a Campfire graduate who joined this tour, adds, ‘I felt privileged to be part of this adventure. The Okavango needs people to fight for awareness, funds and research and I’m proud to be one of them.’ At the time of writing, we had raised approximately R44 930.00 of our R100 000 target. Please visit the Trust website at www.wildbirdtrust.com to learn more about this ambitious project, and to find TWO BIRDS | ONE MOUNTAIN on GoFundMe to make a donation in support of the preservation of our natural heritage. ‘I wish that more people will experience this unique place in all its diversity,’ says Gina Backman, who completed her FGASA course on the tour.

Fever. Buy a thermometer, keep it at home and travel with it. ANY flu-like symptoms. Headache, body pain plus fever, etc... Digestive symptoms. Diarrhoea. Malaria is easily confused with infectious or traveller’s diarrhoea. Be very suspicious!

3) Test yourself or get tested as soon as possible. •

Rapid test kits are available over the counter at your local pharmacy. Always have at least one on hand – it isn’t easy to find a malaria test on a Saturday night or in a town / city / country where malaria is not prevalent! If you have visited a malaria area make sure to buy at least two tester kits and keep them in case you develop symptoms back home where treatment of malaria may not be common. They are inexpensive, less than R100/test. These tests are very reliable, if test is negative and you are in doubt, test again 12 hours later if you are still not feeling better. Testing early can make the difference between a minor illness and a life-threatening infection.

People die because they think they have something else and don’t test for malaria soon enough. Malaria symptoms will only develop about 10 days after being bitten when you may have forgotten about the threat of malaria! 4) The Hoedspruit clinic is open and available from 07:00 to 16:00 seven days a week for testing and treatment free of charge. 5) Even if you self-diagnose and test yourself, it is good to go to your doctor or local clinic to get blood tests done to check your kidney and liver function. Your haemoglobin (Hb) levels and parasite count will determine whether you need intravenous Artesunate (derived from Artemesia Annua / common name wormwood) or whether you are well enough to just take it orally as a Co-artem tablet. Co-artem is available from the clinic or pharmacy. 6) NB: If you are hospitalised for intravenous (IV) treatment, IV Artesunate has a lower mortality than IV quinine for complicated malaria. Artesunate is available in government hospitals and most private hospitals. If the hospital does not have Artesunate in stock, take IV quinine until they source IV Artesunate.

The less plastic the better: plastic bags pollute our land and water, and is harmful to wildlife and marine life. Pick n Pay is rolling out its new Green People n Planet reusable bags nationally. The bag is expected to be in all stores by mid-October. Pick n Pay has partnered with The Coca-Cola Company and Unilever, two companies who are also actively implementing waste reduction initiatives to sell the first one million green ‘People n Planet’ reusable bags for just R4 per bag, according to its media statement issued on the 20th of September 2019 by the franchise. It will take all of us to make a plastic free world become a reality.

Kyra Girardin is a 15-yearold scholar at Southern Cross School who loves wildlife photography. ‘It’s one of my passions at the moment’, she told Kruger2Canyon after being announced the winner of the World Wide Predators NPC Carnivore ID photography competition for the month of August ‘When I took this photo I was at Djuma in the Sabi Sands with a group of friends. A funny story actually, we were following a female lioness and her cubs into a drainage line. As they slunk too deep into the bush for us to follow, this stunning male leopard appeared. He was only eight meters from our vehicle’, explained an ecstatic Kyra. ‘It was a very cool sighting indeed! And to add to that, I did not expect to win this competition at all!’ ‘With a phenomenal selection of photos that had been entered, I felt I had no chance of winning. It was a very pleasant surprise!’ In the future Kyra ‘hopes to one day see one of her photos in the Kruger Magazine’s top 10’. ‘This has definitely inspired me to keep taking photos and stay true to my passion. But I don’t do photography to enter competitions, I entered this one to help Worldwide Predators NPO with their data monitoring. I enjoy taking photos and sharing them on my social media pages. (Instagram: kyragirardinphotography) and every now and then I enter a competition, but I am mostly focused on just capturing these animals for myself.

Steve’s challenge:Karkloof 100 miler for Michaela

‘Definitely the toughest thing I’ve ever done, but what an adventure! I’m very humbled by the comradery I experienced at the event and the support I’ve had from friends and family. Special thanks to my wife and daughter for the nine months leading up to this,’ says Steve Lownie.

STEVES CHALLENGE TO YOU: ‘Please help me make the 100 Miler count by making a donation to help raise funds for Michaela Shoebotham’s alternative therapy.’ Recently, Michaela’s doctors advised her to stop chemo, radiation etc. for a while to give her body a chance to heal. In

her own words: ‘My recent relapse has stirred up some big emotions and some deep reflections. It’s likely that we will never be able to completely close the book on cancer. We were thrilled to hear the results from my biopsies, which show that the lymphoma has not spread to my liver. My liver is hurting though... it’s enlarged, full of fat and shows damage from previous liver failure; nine years of chemotherapy, radiation and cocktails of drugs mean that it has some serious healing to do. Hence the active lymphoma I currently have in my nodes and throughout my bones cannot simply be attacked with more chemo this time, because the effects on my body would be too severe. Moving forward, we’ve given it a lot of thought and I’ve decided on what it is I really want to do. I need to support my body in healing and repairing as well as keep

it fit and strong enough to fight the malignant cells. I’ve got three months until I’m scanned again and I’d like to embrace many of the ‘alternative’ treatments that are available close

Karkloof 50 Miler Megan Loftie-Eaton On Saturday, 21 September 2019, I took on the Karkloof 50 Miler trail run in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal. I ran this 80 km trail race in support of bat conservation and to raise funds for ReWild NPC. ReWild NPC is a wildlife rehabilitation centre based in Phalaborwa. They help wild animals that have been injured or orphaned and, when they are ready, return them to the wild. But they do far more than that! They specialize in bat rehabilitation while working hard to educate the public on the importance of bats. They help with human-bat

conflict resolution, they help farmers to use bats to control crop pests and they make bat houses and apply many other bat conservation measures. Bats around the world play vital ecological roles that support ecosystem health and human economies. Many bat species consume vast amounts of insects, including some of the most damaging agricultural pests. Others pollinate many valuable plants, ensuring the production of fruits that support local economies, as well as diverse animal populations. We have a lot to be grateful for because of the existence of bats. The Karkloof 50 Miler was an amazing experience! I am still trying to wrap my head around it all. It was challenging, but absolutely incredible and the scenery was stunning! It was a hot day, we struggled with the 35 degree heat and I even got lost for a bit, but luckily managed to find the route again. I was thrilled to come in, in third place for the women and 12th overall, in a field of more than 100 runners. Half of the field did not finish the race because of the hot weather. All I want to do now is enter for the 2020 Karkloof event and see if I can do better and improve my time. Thank you to the incredible Hoedspruit community, Belinda Barkas and Alloise Mdhlovu, it was a privilege to run the 50 Miler with you. Steve Lownie, you are a real

champion for completing the 100 Miler! Julia Williams, Carl du Toit, Terry and Sylvia Papadopoulos, Anthony Rance, you have no idea how much it meant to have you guys out on the course keeping an eye on all us Hoedspruiters. To my family and my dog, you are best. Thank you for all your love and support. A big thank you also has to go to the wonderful volunteers at the aid stations, they were so friendly and caring. Every aid station was like a little oasis of awesomeness. Thank you for the peanut butter sandwiches. And of course Mike and Lindsey Dickerson, all the way in New Zealand, thank you for inspiring all of us to enter for Karkloof! We miss you big time! Come back! .... and I have to thank the random stranger that handed me a small bottle of ice cold water 3 km from the finish, I don’t know who you were, but you were a real lifesaver! I have managed to raise over R28,000 for ReWild NPC to date. I have been overwhelmed by the incredible support from everyone. Thank you for showing love for bats, every bit helps. A special thank you has to go to EcoTraining, WildArk, Warren Carey and Sable Tours for their wonderful donations. I cannot express my gratitude enough. Thank you.
