Wild Shots students #IamStaying head to Cape Town!
Saturday’s rugby result and all the stories that followed have gone more than a long way towards cementing a previously wavering South African spirit. Messages flew around the globe as South African supporters revelled in what might have been the victory of the century. Led by Siya Kolisi, a most humble leader with endless stories to tell about his life. Who could have dreamt of a better team, a better coach, a better captain, right now right here in this South African situation we find ourselves. As it has been said: England didn’t stand a chance, because they weren’t playing a team, they were playing a nation. Hoedspruiters were right there in full force and support! What a great moment – to be cherished forever... more on page3... Michael Poliza and Neville Ngomane - the legend and the future, seen at the Wild Shots Wildlife Photography Conference in Cape Town last week.
Ten Wild Shots outreach students from the Acorns to Oaks High School had the trip of a lifetime, spending the weekend in Cape Town. They attended the Wild Shots Wildlife Photography Conference. Now in its eighth year, this is Africa’s foremost gathering of wildlife photographers and its aim is to explore the power of nature imagery. It is a day of inspiration, story-telling and stunning images and was founded and run by Hoedspruit resident Harriet Nimmo. The Wild Shots outreach programme was catalysed by the conference’s struggle
over the years to find any South African photographers of colour to join the line-up. This year’s keynote was given by renowned German photographer, Michael Poliza, who made sure he spent time with the students. Hoedspruit photographer Villiers Steyn also joined the speakers’ line-up this year, with a brilliant presentation entitled ‘The five mistakes even the pros make’. After the conference, the students spent the following day touring the Cape Peninsula – the first time they had ever seen the sea. The high school students were also joined by two of Wild Shots Outreach’s most talented graduates – Queen Manyike, now
working as a qualified FGASA guide and Neville Ngomane, winner of the International Young Environmental Photographer of the Year Competition. Wild Shots Outreach founder, Mike Kendrick explained ‘Spending the weekend in Cape Town is an inspirational, rewarding and uplifting experience for these students from rural Mpumalanga. It helps boost their ambition and self-esteem and I hope it will help them develop into Africa’s conservationists of tomorrow…’ A big shout and huge thank you to Nick Coetzer of Buya Buya Travel for his help and generous support transporting the students from Acornhoek to ORT, there and back.

cial networks and knowledge exchange.’ The Hoedspruit PGS assesses its members against the South African Organic Standard, which is benchmarked against the IFOAM – Organics International standard and is held by SAOSO (South African Organic Sector Organisation). The Hoedspruit Hub, with funding from GIZ, has supported the launch of the Hoedspruit PGS, along with Hlokomela, Soil with Soul, AWARD, the Mahlathini Development Foundation, Zingela Ulwazi, as well as a few independent growers and market representatives. Organic producers and processors seeking endorsement for local food systems will be able to access 2nd party organic certification through the Hoedspruit PGS. The various areas of assessment included the history of land use and the duration of zero-chemical processes adopted; soil fertility and the various methods used to increase the health of our soils; water management practices; plant management and pest management strategies; and storage, packaging and processing facilities and the maintenance thereof. With a group of nine as-
sessors, the panel spent four hours delving deep into the Hlokomela Herb Garden story. Understanding the full history of the land and the current situation allowed the panel to appreciate how far the Hlokomela Herb Garden, with the help of all the current and past staff, has come to ensure quality production and an ever-increasing biodiversity that has set the scene for a thriving, sustainable natural system. This system emulates the diversity seen in the most secure natural systems on our planet, one form of biomimicry that is evident in the Herb Garden. The Hlokomela Herb Garden has more than 100 species of plants, ranging from culinary herbs, some vegetable varieties, medicinal, soil building and insect repellent plants, as well as a whole host of indigenous species aimed at either providing habitat for beneficial insects or creating quality biomass for their composting system. Look out for the Hoedspruit PGS logo in stores soon. Also lookout for the other PGS members who will be assessed in the near future to get their Hoedspruit PGS certification. The Right to Water Permaculture Explorers, a group of twenty women from RDP Village in Acornhoek, had a break from their usual permaculture and business development classes last Saturday. December Ndholvu, Community Gardener and Water Activist, delivered a class about the water crisis in the Bushbuckridge area, which is severely affecting communities and putting the women’s food gardens and livelihoods, and thus the wellbeing of their families, at risk. RDP Village is off of the Orpen Road, close to the R40, and is in the grip of a prolonged water shortage. The community gets water once or twice a fortnight from communal taps. The municipality turns the water on at midnight, or 3 or 4am, so people have to set their alarm clocks and go and queue in the darkness. Often the water comes out in just a trickle, or runs dry before everyone has access. When confronted about this state of
Comments from some of our locals include Maja Prinsloo: ‘We work at such a special place with the best family in the world... and our cleints, wow what a place to live, there are no words to describe Saturday’. Shannon Hancock: ‘Proudly South African! And always will be!’ Traci Thomson: ‘I love my country I love my people ... I am a proud South African!’ Denise and Jurie van Vuuren: #OnsBly! Sleepers staff: DEFINITELY STAYING!
World Youth Wildlife Summit 2019
Wisani Ngwenya What a wonderful four-day gathering of about 150 youth conservation leaders at Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre From 21-24 September, young people from all around the world gathered to discuss critical issues and solutions to the wildlife crime which we are facing today everywhere in the world. Young people aged 15-18 were engaged in
discussion with conservationist experts, and given a chance to speak their minds about the issue of wildlife crime and help them understand and increase their knowledge. This gathering was initiated with a mission to engage youth conservation leaders in wildlife conservation and protection strategies, to empower delegates to become local, national and international ambassadors for wildlife and conservation, and to encour-
3
age them to influence policy at every level. It was an inspiring four days with daily routines of empowering, engaging, equipping and educating young people from across the world. All the participants walked out of Kruger Park motivated and energized to fight wildlife crimes. Every day passed with smiles, tranquillity and peace among the participants, with Wild Shots Out-
reach graduates capturing it all on photographs. The final day quickly approached as if there was a catalyst added. Such a gathering is an opportunity to learn how other countries or states deal and manage wildlife crimes. It is with high hopes that in the next coming years, we will be having more young people from local communities, in South Africa and worldwide, leading and addressing issues of wildlife.
affairs, municipal officials allegedly simply shrug and say that there is no water, which is incorrect as other parts of Acornhoek do have water. December started by describing the catchment area that supplies water to Bushbuckridge, and then explained that historically, Bushbuckridge Water Board, and then Rand Water, managed potable water supply to Bushbuckridge. Rand Water’s services were recently terminated, leaving water management to the municipality, which has resulted in a drastic decline in services. Further, December explained that the gum tree plantations on Mariepskop are a huge part of the problem, with each tree sucking up over 120 litres of water per day – multiply that by millions of trees and you will understand why Acornhoek and Bushbuckridge are bone dry. Government committed as far back as 2001 to eradicating these plantations but progress has been slow. As a graduate and facilitator of Changing Practice, a training programme for environmental and water activists presented by the Environmental Monitoring Group and Rhodes University, December co-authored a booklet called “Saving Moholoholo”
which details the situation. Each South African citizen has a constitutional right to water, 25 liters a day at a minimum. December guided Permaculture Explorers participants through the process of taking action about water shortages, by contacting local civic organisations first, then municipalities. Should the municipality fail to remedy the problem, he advised contacting Department of Water and Sanitation at the Provincial level. In short, the situation in RDP Village is unacceptable and an infringement of citizens’ constitutional rights. Communities that do not follow proper procedures of communicating with relevant authorities and registering their complaint will most likely remain without services. The women of Permaculture Explorers were appreciative of December’s insights and suggestions, and also noted that borehole pumps in RDP are being vandalized, further contributing to the crisis. December thanked NPO Zingela Ulwazi for inviting him, and we in turn thank him for his generosity. Rotarians in action against polio
24 October is World Polio Day, when Rotarians worldwide recognize the progress that has been made so far in the eradication of polio. Rotary is totally committed to the eradication of polio and they are in it to the
end and intend to conquer this terrible disease which impacts on individuals and families. Gary Huang, the Chair of Rotary Foundation states ‘we are fortunate to have great friends in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative – including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which continues to match every dollar donation 2 to 1. We have already eradicated wild poliovirus type 2 and type 3 is soon to be wiped out. India is free from polio and all of Africa may soon be certified polio free.’ Bill and Melinda Gates foundation has taken the unusual step of absorbing a $76 million IOU owed by Nigeria to Japan, for money they had borrowed to fund their polio eradica-

tion effort. In 2012 Nigeria had more than half the worldwide cases of this paralyzing disease; that number has now been cut to zero and Nigeria has not reported a case of polio in nearly 3 years. The progress made was striking. Ole Ahrens, President of Rotary Hoedspruit, goes on to say ‘we understand the meaning of Service Above Self and we take a stand together with our fellow Rotarians, like minded brothers and sisters around the world who will not give up until we have rid the world of this disease forever’. Rotary Hoedspruit has become part of the history of polio eradication with our weekly popcorn campaign. We make popcorn and provide it to our members and guests at our weekly meetings at Fig and Bean. You fill your bowl with popcorn and place your donation into the red plastic polio eradication container. Alan Partington our Treasurer banks these donations regularly. Mark Daniel Maloney, President of Rotary, International, confirms confidently ‘when we reach our goal, polio will become only the second human disease eradicated on the planet and Rotary will receive international acclaim’. But what matters most he says ‘is the children who will never again have to face this terrible, disabling virus. It is up to us, so let us finish the job’. Donations can be made directly to endpolio.org/donate or you can contact Rotary Hoedspruit President, Ole Ahrens: ole.ahrens@t-online.de Leaders working together to connect, inspire and transform communities.

A brave young man!
Our son, Hannes Labuschagne, is almost 6 years old and he has been a type 1 diabetic from the age of two and a half years. Interestingly enough, he didn’t get diabetes from living an unhealthy lifestyle. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the body’s pancreas. This is where insulin is produced. Without insulin, he would die. With too much he can also die. He is on a Medtronic insulin pump with a sensor which monitors him 24 hours a day. We do carb counting for everything that he eats. This is a battle every single day trying not to allow his blood glucose levels to go high or too low. It doesn’t matter how well this is managed; it remains a risk. Although he can do the same things as any other child, he needs to be monitored constantly. This will remain a battle, for the rest of his life or until a cure is found. We have a diabetes awareness day on the 14th of November 2019 at Mariepskop Primary School, which is also World Diabetes day. At the awareness day we are going to plant a tree called: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow and from there we will do the same in November of each year.

Jaunli Huddle By Laerskool Mariepskop is daar ‘n jare lange tradisie waar die Riepie-plaaskinders stadliggies toe gevat word.
Ten pin bowling was gevolg deur
2 rondtes Lazertag.

Ford Phalaborwa was crowned Hoedspruit Touchies Champs 2019
With all the celebrations and excitement of the World Cup it seemed the perfect time to host a Touch Rugby Tournament in our town! The enthusiasm was amazing, the community jumped in and entered their teams, and 128 players registered. Some teams came only for a day of fun, but the majority took the competition very seriously. The fundraiser in aid of the local Hockey Club was such a huge success that we are already planning a league for next year. Hopefully this event will grow and become one of the big sport days in the Hoedspruit calendar! Century 21 was our main sponsor for the day, but a lot more companies joined in to make the day possible. We raised a large amount for the hockey, to help us with next year’s funding, and a small amount also for the ground hornbill project in Hoed-
spruit. Right from the first round the big dogs, like Black Stars and Tzaneen Rugby Club, stamped their authority on the event. Team Congo Rockets stood out as one with the most spirited and well-behaved teams on the pitch and won the title Team of the Day. In the semi finals Tzaneen Rugby club met Black Stars, and the two Phalaborwa teams, Phalaborwa Ford and Phalaborwa Padhonde pitted against each other. The tournament continued late into the night, and at 22.30 the finals kicked off. Phalaborwa Ford lost to the Black Stars who were out to prove a point and kept the ball in hand most of the game. Their try scoring machine Dayan Webb scoried his 10th try, making him the player of the tournament, but also giving Ford the Trophy in the end.
