Mabushi magic in The Oaks Lisa Wright
‘If anybody can give support with any soccer equipment – please help!’ That’s how Claudia Schnell first shone the spotlight on a small group of boys and young men between 8 and 22 years of age from The Oaks Village near Hoedspruit. The team call themselves the Mabushi Football Academy. Their coach: Lucas ‘Danger’ Mpe Masete told Claudia at their first meeting: ‘Claudia, these boys love to play football and I try to keep them out of trouble with our daily training so that they aren’t bored and stay away from drugs and crime!’ Claudia was inspired by the coach’s vision and mindset, she told K2C this week. She wanted to help the team realise their dream of finding a sponsor for proper soccer equipment. Originally from Germany, Claudia fell in love with South Africa when she first visited the country in 1991. In 2007, on one of her holiday trips, Claudia obtained her Field Guide qualification and found a job at a rehabilitation centre in Limpopo. And that’s it, her new life had begun! Over the next few years, Claudia gained experience in conservation and tourism and in 2011 started her own Safari-Company called 7 Senses Safaris. She also wanted to give something back to this beautiful country and its amazing people and started to support different orphanages and disability projects in the area, with her non-profit organisation Claudia Cares NPC. Before Claudia could really

get involved with the soccer team and teach the kids how to fundraise for themselves, Covid-19 hit. The boys were not allowed to go to school and even worse, not play football! Lucas and Claudia worried that during these Covid-19 times the kids would head down the wrong path,
but they came up with a fabulous idea. ‘We started a small veggie garden and the boys got special training on how to grow veggies in an area like The Oaks, with lots of rock and little water,’ says Claudia. They started mid-April with their plan, but of course with social distancing and masks.
Almost every day the soccer team came to the garden, watered the plants and put organic fertiliser like chicken and cow manure (which they collected in the village) into the garden beds. In June they started harvesting their first veggies, which Claudia Cares NPC bought from them for
the food-parcel project the non-profit organisation was running. Another thing caught Claudia’s eye in the village: the masses of rubbish strewn around The Oaks. Soon she got the boys onto the second business idea; collecting rubbish and making money out of it...cont on page8...

RABIES is 99% fatal but 100% preventable Yvette Hes World Rabies Day is 28 September, a global day of action and awareness for rabies prevention. Even though rabies kills someone every nine minutes, it is 100% preventable. Vaccinating 70% of dogs in at-risk areas can eliminate dog rabies. South Africa’s provinces Mpumalanga and Lim-
popo, the provinces where HALO conducts outreaches, are considered high risk rabies areas. Though it is a legal requirement to vaccinate your dogs against rabies, in rural communities where there is no access to veterinary state services, as in the communities where HALO conducts outreaches, dogs are rarely vaccinated against rabies and
other diseases. Let’s make a difference together! WILD DOGZ BURGER BAR has generously offered to host a HALO RABIES EVENT for HALO on Monday 28 September from 5-8 PM. Tickets are available at R120 each, this buys you a seat for the evening, a welcome drink and snacks and two raffle tickets. Only 44 entry tickets are available for the evening. All the proceeds of the tickets go directly to HALO. The evening includes a presentation on HALO and rabies, a raffle where you can win some stunning prizes, and an auction (also open for phone biddings). Wild Dogz Burger Bar has a wide selection of food and drinks to choose from (at your own expense). Raffle tickets are available at R60 each, for which HALO can vaccinate one dog in the communities. COVID-19 restrictions are in place and social distancing will be adhered to at all times. If you are unable to attend the event, you can still stand a chance to win by buying raffle tickets and bid via phone on our auction prizes.
Prizes for the raffle are (with more to follow!): • A signed copy of Karen Mitchell’s book ‘The Rhino Crash: A Memoir of Conservation, Unlikely Friendships and Self-Discovery’ • A box of fine wines, donated by Safari Wines • Two wine bags by Joen • A Wild Dogz Burger bar voucher for R250 • An essential oil package by Claire Smedley • A HALO VIP outreach day for two people, including one free T-shirt and cap • A weekend for 2 at Bushbaby River Lodge, voted South Africa’s best 4* B&B 2019-2020 • An A1 unique wildlife photo by professional photographer Villiers Steyn, printed by Postnet Next to our raffle prizes we have some exciting auction prizes you can bid on during the night (also open for phone bidding!) • A Tabby Mittens original ‘doodle’ framed drawing of a HALO dog • A HALO VIP outreach day for two people, including one free T-shirt and cap • A beautiful HALO branded pig (Bok se Bosvark Oondjie) oven Secure your seat at R120 for the evening by sending an email to: hoedspruit. halo@gmail.com. Raffle tickets are available for R60 each, which you can pay for via EFT or Paypal, reference RABIES (send proof of payment to hoedspruit.halo@gmail.com) for your raffle tickets. Details on phone biddings for the auction will be published closer to the date.

A hard copy of K2C
Heidi Lee Smith The effects of #LockDown have not excluded us! But we are changing with the times and evolving by the day. Thanks to the determined efforts of one of Kruger2Canyon’s most avid supporters over the years you can now get Kruger2Canyon in print once again! Margaret Grafton lives out of town and has poor internet signal, but she has persisted at getting her Kruger2Canyon come hell or high water. Margaret’s persistence resulted in us arranging with MJ’s Photographic @ Kamogelo Tourism Centre, to have the Kruger2Canyon available in a printed hard copy. Back issues are also available from the beginning of 2020 #LockDown – so if you would like a page or the full copy – just pop in and get it printed in colour or black and white! Black and white cost: R3 per page and colour cost: R10 per page For those of you who may have featured in the paper and wish to keep the hard copy – here is your solution.
One very happy Kruger2Canyon fan, Margaret Grafton, seen at MJ’s collecting her batch of four back issues of K2C.

SCS 2020 OnlineAuction Mobile clinic 5 LOTS – WEEK 3 takes health care La Lucia Escape 3 Nights for 8 people to rural women Stargazing ‘If you can dream it you can do it’ says Christine du Preez, director of Hlokomela. ‘In 1995 my father helped me to prepare a proposal for a mobile clinic so that I could go out to the farms around Hoedspruit. We got the quotes and everything ready but it never happened. Since that time, and especially after Hlokomela was born in 2005, I have always dreamt about having a mobile clinic to offer quality health care services to people in hard to reach locations’. On 7 September 2020 this dream became a reality for the Hlokomela team when we received our very own mobile clinic from the Embassy of Japan in South Africa and the Japanese people. The Grant Assistance for Grass Roots Human Security Project will enable Hlokomela to reach more women in rural areas through our fully equipped mobile clinic. This is a game changer especially for women’s health care services in our area. No more doing 40 Pap smears in taverns, or breast examinations behind car doors on the side of the road! Now we can see our patients in a clean, air-conditioned mobile clinic offering them quality, comfort and dignity. For our staff, and especially

Southern Cross Schools Parents’ Association hosts an annual auction to raise funds for the school. This has in past years, always been a very successful and enjoyable evening. In 2020, the auction has to take on a different format due to Covid-19 regulations and the decision was made to run the annual auction online. The SCS PA 2020 auction is not only about being a fundraiser for Southern Cross Schools, it is also inspired by the emotion called ‘kindness’. The 2020 auction is about supporting and promoting local and national industries and individuals. We are all aware that our town and tourism in general, has had to navigate a long and winding road through the Covid-19 pandemic. The aim of this year’s SCS PA Auction is to promote and advertise the various businesses and individuals who have kindly donated lots for the auction.
By posting and repeating a number of adverts with varying information about a specific donor over a 10-day period, the ongoing exposure will hopefully result in their names being imprinted on the reader’s mind. SCS aims to assist all businesses and individuals over the next 7 weeks by using various social media platforms to reach as many people, towns, cities and countries as possible. The auction is currently in week 3. Interestingly, since the launch of the online auction, a number of donors have contacted the school with the offer to sponsor further lots. The 2020 Online Auction certainly speaks to the founding motto of the auction which is: ‘Motho ke Motho ka Batho’ meaning ‘A person is a person through people.’ To view Southern Cross Schools adverts on Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp, log onto www.auctionroom.co.za/scs

Free range is the rage Go local, go Limpopo
Heidi Lee Smith The combination of lockdown and the opening of the Bush Basket shop at Kamogelo has led to financial solutions that certainly fit the ‘out of the box’ criteria. The Hen House’s free-range eggs is no exception to this ‘new normal’ rule. ‘The idea of getting laying hens started when I was thinking of ways to cut costs for all the households on the farm. We have four houses on the farm and during the
COVID period I knew that we would all struggle without a steady income. Along with starting a veggie garden to support the houses I decided to start with laying hens,’ says the innovative Tayla Roodt. ‘I started off with ten hens and soon realised that the eggs we got were definitely more than what the four households would use. That’s when I thought of selling my eggs to make an income, as eggs are a part of most people’s everyday diet’.
Fortunately for Tayla the Bush Basket was opening just as she launched her egg business giving her the perfect outlet for Hen House eggs in town. ‘It was the best decision I ever made’, says Tayla. ‘The support I’ve received from the community has been amazing and I couldn’t be more grateful. Due to the this I was lucky enough to be able to buy more hens and I currently have 48 free range happy layers walking around,’ she ends.

owns EcoProducts and who supplies me with baobab powder. The baobab powder is sourced ethically by local Venda women as part of a community empower-
ment project. It’s naturally nutrient rich, super high in calcium, and has fantastic properties for gut health. Although the Bao Mayo is a vegan product, it is proving equally popular with non-vegans; it is not only used as a standard mayonnaise but has great versatility. By gently heating the mayo on the stove, it can be used as a delicious hollandaise sauce. Its natural tartness pairs well with seafood as a tartar sauce. It can be used as a dip on a cheese board, or thinned down to create a healthy salad dressing. Bao Mayo currently comes in two flavours; natural and chilli, and we are working on a herb flavoured variety. I also own a business called Cicadas Local. We supply locally grown produce and homemade products to guests visiting Magoebaskloof by offering a fridge stock service to local accommodation, as well as picnic baskets and gift boxes. We are trying to change the way people shop, encourage the support of local businesses, and showcase the incredible array of products the mountain has to offer. People can pre-order on my website (www.cicadas-local.co.za) and everything will be delivered to their accommodation prior to their arrival. I also deliver non-perishable items as far afield as Cape Town. My husband and I are also micro-farmers, we grow microgreens, oyster mushrooms, chestnuts and gooseberries. Bao Mayo is available in the fridge section at both Le Bamba and Hoed Rock Café.
MAKING OPPORTUNITIES
Art from an old drum, a fridge or an iron
Kerstin Nyberg Peart If you approach Hoedspruit from the south for the first time, there’s a surprise in store for you by the roadside: striking metal sculptures of elephants and rhinos, kings, warriors and dancing ladies that will catch your eye as you pass the Bosveld Centre. If you stop to investigate, you will find even more. Garden seats, chairs made from the shelves of discarded fridges, tribal masks, bird baths, small ornaments depicting dung beetles pushing their dung balls, warthogs, you name it! You can expect to pay R150 for a dung beetle and R15 000 for a garden seat, and anything in between. The man behind all this is Emmanuel Karuweni, metal
artist, electric arc and gas welder, who arrived in South Africa in 2000 and started to sell his products around the country. This changed when the owners of the Bosveld Centre, Trevor Jordan and Lisa Harris, met Emmanuel in Harare and were fascinated by his work. They wanted him to come and work for them at the Bosveld Centre, where he would also have the opportunity to do his own art, while helping them with building up the Centre. It’s easy to see why – his sculptures give the Centre a unique African image, and make it an attraction that visitors to the area must see. Emmanuel can make art out of just about any scrap metal: oil drums, old fridges, metal cupboards, horse shoes, and he lets the scrap

A magic world made from clay

Saturday in September. In addition to selling his beautiful craft, Simbi has come up with a new attraction at the Bosveld Centre. He noticed that many families with children would come out there for a meal, and had the idea to entertain the children so the parents can enjoy their meal in peace. All children love modelling, and Simbi will give them small pieces of clay which they can shape on the potter’s wheel into mugs or plates, or shape them free hand by ‘coiling, slabbing and pinching’, to quote Simbi. The kids then paint their creations and have them glazed in the kiln. A two hour lesson costs R150, and the children go home with their very own pottery. Simbi runs classes on Thursday afternoons, and on Saturdays and Sundays. You can buy Simbi’s ceramic art at the Bosveld Centre, and if you have been a regular at the Farmers Markets you will recognise it immediately. Go and see the magic world which has come from his creative hands and fired and finished in his kiln!
tell him what he should use it for. He has an open air workshop behind the Centre, where two wild dog sculptures were waiting for the next step. The big pieces you can see from the road were a long time in making; the elephant took a year and the rhino around six months. Smaller pieces are obviously quicker, but sometimes the work is held up by the lack of suitable material, and Emmanuel gratefully accepts any old metal – especially oil drums. The tourists who visit the Bosveld Centre are fascinated by his work, but limited by what they can fit into their suitcases. Many dung beetles have been wrapped up to fit into a bag, and can now be found in their new homes all over the world. Kerstin Nyberg Peart Teapots with a zebra’s head for a spout or a peacock for a lid, urns with leopards dancing on the brim, vases with elephants’ heads and trunks for handles. To describe the work of Simplicio Zulu – or Simbi, as he is usually called – just as pottery would be doing it an injustice; it is ceramic art, magic made from clay and glaze. Simbi came to South Africa from his hometown Bulawayo nine years ago. He started in Johannesburg, where he used his training in fine arts not just to produce ceramics but also to teach others. He worked for the international organisation Oxfam, which together with local municipalities ran courses to empower youths by teaching skills that would help them get ahead in life. Teaching also brought Sim-
bi to this part of South Africa when he was asked by a friend to come and train local people to use the kilns he had built in Tulamahashe. He stayed on to start a project in Bushbuckridge, where he still has his main workshop. Two years ago Simbi discovered the Hoedspruit Farmers Market, and started selling his products there, and just before the lockdown started in March he moved to the Bosveld Centre full time. He is very grateful to the owners, Trevor Jordan and Lisa Harris, for helping him and providing him with both commercial space and somewhere to live, free of charge. Simbi says that the lockdown period has been very difficult, but slowly the numbers of visitors have started to grow, and there was a very well attended Farmers Market on the first

A bird guide’s story: from humble beginnings to the world
Birding in the mountain forests on Mariepskop Cape Batis
Enrique Badenhorst A glimpse into the makings of an accomplished bird guide and now owner of an international birding company; Casper Badenhorst’s aspirations would never have been realised without the support of the Hoedspruit community. Casper grew up in a family addicted to visiting the Kruger National Park. Casper had his first birding experience at the age of twelve, when during a blistering hot December school holiday Casper’s exasperated Mum got tired of keeping the peace between her three sons on the backseat of the car. She ran into the shop in Skukuza and returned with a Newman’s bird field guide which she tossed over her shoulder into the back seat.
Casper caught the book. Later that day he successfully identified his first lilac-breasted roller. Not only did this change his life but also the Kruger holiday for everyone else in the car. A constant exclamation of ‘STOP! There’s a bird!’ from the back seat almost had Casper’s father throwing the book out the window. He discovered a whole new world, full of birds, where every moment was an opportunity to identify a new species. Family holidays became opportunities to broaden his birding skills and species count. The grasslands around Belfast and Dullstroom where he grew up became his birding backyard. During his time at university and the first years of his working career, Casper would be the designated organiser of the holiday and long-weekend trips he and his friends made to Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana and Mozambique. Writing up itineraries, planning routes and calculating costs for food, fuel and park fees came naturally to him, skills that would become very valuable later in life. He enjoyed sharing his passion for birding and turned holidays into excit-

ing excursions travelling from one birding hotspot to the next. After university, Casper travelled abroad, binoculars ready as he explored North Africa, Europe and Central America over the next decade. Chasing anything from hummingbirds and toucans in Guatemala to goldfinches and wheatears in Tunisia, birding became a lifestyle, a constant birding journey. In 2003, when Casper and his wife were doing poverty relief work in Swaziland, he was asked to lead the Swaziland Bird Club. A year later they moved to Sekororo, a rural area 60km outside Hoedspruit, where they established a non-profit organisation. Soon after arriving, Casper unknowingly started his future guiding
career when he registered himself on the Birdingpal website as a local birder. A constant flow of birders and birding groups from all over the world came to stay with them and Casper hosted numerous birding trips into the Kruger, Lekgalameetse, up Mariepskop, across the Panorama route, and into Magoebaskloof. Guiding birders became a part of his life. Six years later he moved his family to Hoedspruit. He was asked by a Hoedspruit lodge owner, Mattie van Rooyen, to become their full-time bird guide, and she funded his FGASA qualification. More and more birders requested his guiding skills and he established Birding Limpopo, a small birding company. Heidi Smith encouraged Casper and kindly promoted his new company on K2C News and in Hoedspruit-info. Accommodation establishments around town happily accepted his business cards and he found some of his first and long-term clients. Along with Tony and Glenda Sparkes and Erle Alsworth-Elvey, Casper started the Bushveld Bird Club in Hoedspruit. Club member Derek Solomon saw potential in Casper and rec-

ommended him to a birding company in Nelspruit, which took him on as a freelance bird guide while he continued developing his company with private clients. Two years later, Birding Limpopo transformed into Birding and Wildlife Safaris, running tours throughout South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. As birding holidays had become one of the fastest growing tourism sectors worldwide, his international clients inspired Casper to expand his operations overseas. Over the last sixteen years he has arranged and led a multitude of birding trips and tours in Southern Africa and stretching as far as Colombia, Ecuador and Costa Rica in South and Central America, Uganda and Kenya in East Africa, and Thailand and Malaysia in South-east Asia, with more destinations being constantly added. Casper’s dream of sharing his passion for birds with other birders and nature lovers from all over the world is coming true – but it would not have been possible without the Hoedspruit community’s generosity and support as well as his local clients who have
helped him along the way, something for which he is forever grateful. Mabushi magic in The Oaks cont... ...from page1...One Wednesday morning, Claudia got the kids together and they all started collecting plastic, glass bottles, tins and cans and any other rubbish they could find. In just one morning, they had over 100 rubbish bags full of garbage collected which they brought to the collection point at SkipGo in Hoedspruit. The message
was set: Ones person’s trash is another person’s treasure! Claudia was thrilled to get these two initiatives off the ground. Two small businesses were started, in the midst of lockdown, and the kids and their parents learned a lot. Not just being a backyard farmer and working in the garden, but also how to become an entrepreneur and produce a sellable product
or make money out of rubbish. The income went back into the veggie garden and into the community, and a kitty was established for new soccer equipment and soccer shirts, shorts and socks for future tournaments. ‘Yay!’ says Claudia. Mission Impossible (like some people called her idea) had become Mission Success! Despite not having any in-
ternational guests booking her 7 Senses Safaris, Claudia sees Covid-19 as a chance to change things in her life and in the lives of others. She managed to get support from a friend in Germany who runs an NPO called ‘Voice of Women Foundation’ who wants to support Claudia’s newest idea, to start a little Eco-Village at The Oaks, since there is nothing like this in the community,
HOEDSPRUIT DOES JARUSALEMA DANCE
the #JerusalemaDanceChallenge. The dance moves are a fun and simple dance routine that anyone can master with ease. So wherever you are and whoever you are, put on your dancing shoes and dance to Jerusalema.
Mpho Lavhengwa On Friday 04 September 2020 the Mayor of Maruleng Municipality Councillor Dipuo Thobejane invited Hoedspruit residents to join her and other councillors on the dance floor to celebrate after the hit song ‘Jerusalema’ by Kgaugelo Moagi AKA Master KG went viral
around the world. Master KG comes from Calais Village just outside Hoedspruit town. To celebrate the ‘homeboys’ success young and old residence of Hoedspruit came out in numbers to take up the #JerusalemaDanceChallenge and danced up a storm in the blazing Hoedspruit sun. In South Africa alone
different towns, families, hospital staff, schools and even the SAPS have shared videos online of them breaking a sweat to the hitsong. After the song went viral and became a universal anthem people from different countries like Angola, Nigeria, Jamaica, Italy and Canada just to name a few also took up
which is just on her doorstep. This new project aims to help women and their families in The Oaks Village by building, maintaining, and exploiting a vegetable farm within the community. In the short term, typical regional South African vegetables and fruits will be grown. In the long term they are also concentrating on growing Moringa trees. Moringa grows relatively fast and can easily be converted into Moringa powder and can be sold to local and national stores. Since many women have to take care of disabled relatives
or sick children, this farm is intended as a sustainable self-helping and independent project to give women an opportunity to earn their own income. With the Mabushi soccer team taking on the ‘Jerusalema Dance Challenge’ as a fundraiser at the first Hoedspruit Farmers Market since Lockdown began, they have proved they can do more than just sit and wait until the world returns to normal. With enthusiasm like this, we can look forward to more magic with the new project at The Oaks Eco Village!
