Elephants Alive has been ‘on fire’ with news of the tracking and collaring of emerging tusker Mondzweni (Kilimanjaro) in the Greater Kruger during early November 2020. Both Michelle Henley, CEO, co-founder and principal researcher of Elephants Alive, and the experienced wilderness guide and legendary elephant conservationist Alan McSmith, who assisted in tracking Mondzweni (Kilimanjaro), have written moving accounts about the experience. In his post on Facebook titled ‘Tracking a super-tusker’, Alan McSmith wrote: ‘When Michelle Henley of Elephants Alive asked me to assist in tracking a unique elephant bull, I thought long and hard about it for half a second. The elephant, known to SANParks as ‘Mondzweni’, or to Elephants Alive as ‘Kilimanjaro’, is one of the largest emerging tuskers in the Kruger lowveld. This makes him incredibly valuable for tourism, conservation and research purposes. As a result, Elephants Alive arranged a collaring operation so that Mondzewni could be followed by satellite monitors. Monitoring a bull like this is crucial to determine his range and movement patterns. And, of course, to preserve his unique bloodline by keeping him safe. The day before the collaring I scouted for the elephant with the Elephants Alive team. It’s perhaps worth mentioning here that an elephant, the largest ...cont on pg6...

Yummy MANGO, fresh frozen or dried visit Hoedspruit, you have to have dried mango! Well, not everyone knows what it takes to produce dried mangoes. Mango is a seasonal fruit and is only available for about four months of the year. There are different mango varieties or cultivars. The season kicks off with the beautifully redskinned Tommy Atkins cultivar, which is sweet and tangy but has a fibrous mouthfeel. However, some of the best tasting, non-fibrous mango varieties are Kent and Keitt. These cultivars are immensely popular among mango processors for their ease of handling, size, and the quality of the end product. The skin is green and is not as attractive as Tommy Atkins. But, it is the inside that counts, and most locals know what to look for. Other popular

Carina Nel Nothing beats the taste of a sweet and tangy mango. With the mango season around the corner, this is definitely something to look forward to this summer. Mangoes can be enjoyed fresh or processed. There

are several methods classified as mango processing, including drying, juicing, or purĂŠeing, freezing, preserving, and canning. Dried mangoes have become a distinctive South African produced snack that has been consumed for centuries and, still to-

day, maintains a widely held popularity. There are several mango drying factories in Hoedspruit that service both local and international clientele. Many local residents make the best of the abundance of dried mango in Hoedspruit. It is a given – if you

Spicy mango & pineapple smoothie INGREDIENTS: 1 cup freshly chopped mangoes 200ml pineapple juice 100ml cold water 1/2 tsp chopped red chilli METHOD: Blend all the ingredients together and serve cold. (Garnish with a fresh chilli or fresh mint leaves)

Creamy mango smoothie INGREDIENTS: 1 cup freshly chopped mangoes 1 banana (medium sized) 200ml double cream or full fat plain yoghurt 100ml cold water METHOD: Blend all the ingredients together and serve cold. cultivars include Joa, Isis, Sensation and the sweetest of all - Heidi. Mangoes go through several processes, and in the end only between 8 to 10% of the fresh mango ends up in the dried product. In other words, 1 kilogram of fresh mango will give you about a handful of dried mango and 10 kilograms of fresh mango only gives you 1 kilogram. Most mangoes are tunnel or air dried. This technique involves using hot air that is circulated through driers for a certain period of time to remove the moisture. Dried mangoes are a convenient and delicious snack. By producing dried mangoes, these factories allow us to enjoy this tropical treat throughout the year and not just for a season.

he was instrumental in organising. The concept of the ACC was handed over to Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) Andre Nortje, who became the driving force behind the project and whose tenacity saw it through to the end. ‘The official opening was a huge success,’ says Andre. ‘Guests arrived at 17h30 for 18h00, and gathered in the main display area where the opening ceremony took place.’ The event was attended by numerous Airforce members including Col NG Kereerditse the AFB Hoedspruit Commanding Officer and SAAFA President Col Mike Louw, who were present when Melanie Wright, Pierre’s

wife, did the appropriate official opening. Pierre’s vision to build an Aviation Awareness Centre for the youth, especially in the rural areas of Limpopo, has finally come to fruition and is already being enjoyed by people of all ages and all walks of life. An auction of some select wines and a bar-bell ended off the cheese and wine evening in high spirits. Andre ended off with a note of thanks to the sponsors who have supported AAC over the past 15 years which include: NTT Hoedspruit, MD Alarms, Leading Edge Flying School, Dunlop, Safari Wines and finally the committee members and helpers on the opening evening.

Above: It would have been the greatest joy for Lt. Col Pierre Wright to see children visiting the museum and enjoying the experience of sitting in an Impala aircraft exhibited at the AAC.

Finally - the grand opening of the Aviation Awareness Centre (AAC) at AFB Hoedspruit took place. It was only a 15 year project, the brainchild and dream of the late, but still very much loved Lieutenant Colonel Pierre Wright, after whom the ACC is named. Pierre was a collector of memorabilia and a history enthusiast. He was actually interested in almost anything, but the Airforce and its flying machines were certainly at the core of what he loved, and he enjoyed nothing more than sharing this knowledge at every opportunity, including some spectacular air shows that

made the under 15 Puma rugby team and went on to win a silver medal in the 300m hurdles, and placed fourth in the 100m hurdles at the SA Junior Athletics Champs in Potchefstroom. At the end of Grade9, family tradition and the will to compete on a higher level drew him to Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies), exactly 90 years after his grandfather attended the school. In addition to being chosen for the Blue Bulls under 16B rugby team, Van Reenen achieved gold in 400m and 110m hurdles at the Super

Interhigh, as well as at the Pretoria Interhigh, where all the top schools in Gauteng compete. He held the best time for his age group and was also part of the Affies relay team that broke the standing record. He continued to hold the best time for 400m hurdles in the country, winning both 400m and 110m hurdles during his u/17 year (2020), but sadly the SA Championships never materialised due to Covid. As Gerrie, Van Reenen’s dad says: his son is caught between two fires and will soon have to choose be-

tween rugby and athletics. ‘It is Van Reenen’s dream to be able to study for a BCom in America where he hopes to pursue a future in athletics, possibly focusing on 400m hurdles,’ says Gerrie. A tribute to Van Reenen’s character was to be chosen as Prefect of his boarding house, as well as being selected as one of four Deputy Headboys that form part of the Affies’ prefect body for next year. This well-grounded young man says he feels ‘exceptionally privileged and proud to represent his school’.

We all know our dentist, but there’s a lot more to repairing a good-looking set of teeth than meets the eye. Dental restoration is a whole separate world of skill. Kruger2Canyon investigated what goes into producing new dentures, veneers, crowns or orthodontic appliances at Skea Studio, owned and run by Angela (Skea) Dennis. Hoedspruiters may not realise how fortunate they are to have such a highly qualified and skilled dental technologist on their doorstep. Dental technology is a branch of dentistry that specialises in the art and science of recreating missing oral anatomy, and the manufacture of functional or therapeutic appliances for correcting oral discrepancies. This work is conducted by a dental technician in a dental laboratory. Each restoration or appliance is

custom crafted, especially for you! Skea Studio is a registered dental lab which serves the Hoedspruit area. The lab first opened in 2011 to 2012. In 2013 Angela accepted a position as dental prosthetics lecturer at Durban University of Technology, where she was later appointed as Head of the Dental Science Department. During her lecturing career Angie attend specialized prosthetic training in Germany and has developed a keen interest in creating highly aesthetic and functional dental prosthetics. In mid-2019 Angela, who describes herself as ‘a returning Hoedspruit addict’ re-opened her lab in Hoedspruit and is currently working with the talented Dentists at the Hoedspruit Family Medical Centre. Skea Studio is a small traditional lab that hand crafts each individual prosthesis to create the best custom result for their patient. One of the many benefits of having a local lab is enjoying fast service in emergency cases. Patients can receive while-you-wait denture repairs and no longer have to go without their teeth while the prosthesis is sent away for repairs. Angie is also

available to attend clinical consultations with patients on request to discuss treatment plans for the ideal end result. ‘I love seeing and getting to know the patients I’m making a prosthesis for. Restoring a patient’s facial structure, oral function and smile is a complicated process. Being part of a great team and speaking to patients about what they want or are struggling with makes a huge difference in delivering the best result,’ says Angie. ‘Recreating the function and aesthetics of

lost oral structure is a team effort. Together with the clinical dental team, specialised techniques are used to accurately record patients jaw relationships to restore the ideal chewing function. In addition, the patient’s facial anatomical features are recorded and used to select the ideal shape and size of prosthetic teeth to best suit the patient’. Angela’s keen interest in fine art realism naturally extends to her prosthetic work, giving her work a very personal and realistic touch.

...from Page 1...land mammal on earth, can leave a surprisingly subtle trail when they move! An out-ofplace leaf, a sand covered tuft of grass, a change in birdsong, or the sound of a dung beetle may be your only clues. At times there may be no clues at all. It was a challenge to find Mondzweni in dense bush, but after a few hours we were royally rewarded. A grassy verge was a perfect vantage point to approach the magnificent elephant. He knew we were there but showed no sign of apprehension or aggression whatsoever. We were sitting now, and slowly he drifted closer and closer, gently watching us while he fed, stopping at seven metres from us. The moments were overwhelming.

It’s during encounters like this that the boundaries of our own fear, understanding, projections and limitations fade, and blur with those of the elephant. Like him, we became part of the landscape, bound by a seminal sense of wonder. It was a long while after he silently ghosted into the bush that we chose to move, and we walked back to the vehicle awakened in our thoughts and time. Or timelessness.’ Kilimanjaro got his name after being sighted by Michelle for the first time in 2005. A few years later, he was also named Mondzweni by SANParks officials. In her post on the Elephants Alive page, Michelle wrote: ‘It has been a week of privilege. Some memories in life will linger with

you forever. How do you put in words an experience combining the vitality of nature with the peaceful powerfulness of sitting at the feet of an elephant like Kilimanjaro? We sat in a small circle in the open with the experienced guide Alan McSmith. No weapon, no talking, little movement while he chose to come and inspect us from seven meters away. Time stood still as his magnificent tusks raked through the verdant green bush, pretending to feed as his curiosity got the better of him. The air was thick with the scent of many wild blossoms while various bird calls rippled like water across the silence. We savoured the moment and were absorbed by the peace the elephant conveyed. No fear, only mutual respect

as it must have been many years ago before elephants came to know the dark side of man. Gratitude, for the timeless moment and the magnificence of such a bull, is all that comes to mind.

Long may he linger and leave his leafy footprints in ancient soils… The mutual respect between Alan and Michelle who both have years of experience with elephants, is tangible. As Alan aptly put it, it was: ‘bushcraft and science combined’. Numerous thanks are due to various players who have allowed Elephants Alive the opportunity to not only safeguard this invaluable elephant, but also watch and monitor his journey. Oom

LA Grade 12 Valediction

LA Matric Dance ‘A Bedouin Night’

Aadilah Razak The LA Matric Dance of 2020 was almost cancelled! The day was saved once lockdown regulations eased up and the wheels were set in motion to give the matrics a proper farewell. Learners arrived at Moholoho Ya Mati from 17:00 on Friday October 23, dressed in their best. The evening started with a few words of encouragement and praise from the principal, Mr Rautenbach, after

which learners took their seats for a short prize giving and farewell speeches by Mr Deacon, Mrs Strydom and the head boy and girl. Dinner was then served and the learners hit the dance floor.

On November 2 the Grade 12 class of 2020 was honoured during Lowveld Academy’s first official Valediction Ceremony. Despite the many tribulations of 2020 and COVID-19, this group has proved to be one of the

strongest academic groups Lowveld Academy has seen, producing six of the top 20 academic students in the Lepelle Circuit and maintaining a current pass rate of close to 98%. The ceremony was held

to honour these and many more successes this group has achieved during their academic career at Lowveld Academy, and to wish them well as they embark on their final milestone in the NSC 2020 Examinations.

On November 2, Lowveld Academy announced their Leader Council for 2021 alongside the grade 12 valediction ceremony. Nominat-

ed by their fellow leaders and educators, these four individuals were selected to lead the class of 2021. As is a LA tradition, they will take

the lead in maintaining discipline, as intermediaries between teachers and students, and setting an example to ‘Strive for Excellence’.

LA new Head Leaders 2021

Tshologo Maile (Head Boy), Nicole van der Merwe (Head Girl), Obeilwe Chiloane (Deputy Head Girl), and Kyle Pretorius (Deputy Head Boy).

Thanks to Moholoholo Ya Mati for hosting the event, and to all the staff and helpers of the evening. You made it a night to remember!
