a collective goal of a million burpees. The Hoedspruit community is right behind Bruce. Southern Cross Schools College has pledged to achieve 30 000 burpees in 10 days to help raise funds, but by the enthusiasm displayed, they are likely to surpass this goal. The Timbavati rangers are up there among the best, doing burpees to help in the difficult situation created by the lack of tourism and consequent loss of conservation levies. Among local businesses Hoedspruit Pick n Pay has its own team of about five enthusiastic ‘burpers’. Bruce’s challenge has been taken up worldwide in 29 countries: a 1st division handball team in Germany has enlisted, as well as various soccer teams, and Crossfit Gyms. The #BurpeesForConservation proceeds will be donated via Tshembo Africa Foundation to the Greater Kruger Environment Protection Foundation (GKEPF). The purpose is to raise funds to upskill anti-poaching teams in the area. Bruce also hopes to motivate 10,000 people in over 30 countries to improve their fitness levels by doing burpees collectively for a good cause. The tourism industry in South Africa suffered badly from the pandemic

Whatever will Bruce Lawson think of next? K2C readers will remember his #Walking4Hope campaign during strict lockdown, when Bruce, together with Sean Pattrick, both highly respected guides, undertook a 150 km walk around their respective home gardens in April 2020. The track in Bruce’s garden required 375 laps to make up the distance, and he did this with an 18kg backpack to raise funds for local communities in the Hoedspruit area which had been severely affected by lockdown. When Bruce found himself headed for ten days of quarantine in a hotel room in Australia, where he wouldn’t even have access to a small garden, he was not without ideas. His latest challenge is #BurpeesForConservation, during which he will perform 30,000 burpees over ten days – an average of 3000 burpees per day. He hopes to raise R1 million for the Tshembo Africa Foundation, which was created in response to the COVID 19 pandemic and of which he is a founder. Participants, local and worldwide, will join him between 15 March and 11 April, with

last year, and areas around the Kruger National Park were very severely affected. In addition to the humanitarian suffering, the loss of funding for the country’s protected areas also made it harder for parks and nature reserves to keep up their constant battle against wildlife crime. The #BurpeesForConservation campaign follows on #Walking4hope, which raised funds to assist people around the Kruger National Park who had lost their jobs due to the pandemic. When #Walking4Hope finished in May 2020, over 200 people in 22 countries had participated and R900 000 raised. Burpees may be an unusual tool for raising funds, but Bruce explains: ‘Burpees are a great exercise because they work nearly all of the body’s major muscle groups, whilst also being a cardio exercise that requires explosive energy.’ He believes that proper motivation (such as raising R1 million for a worthy cause) is much better than telling people to do something because it’s healthy. According to Bruce, ‘If people are motivated, they may as well do something that’s both difficult and good for them at the same time.’ www.burpeesforconservation.com

Where has the time gone? New beginnings David Batzofin

It is almost a year since our President uttered those fateful words “My fellow South Africans” for the first time. Oh, how we laughed…21 days, easy-peasy! We could utilize the 21 days of what we perceived as an enforced holiday to complete a variety of tasks that we had been putting off due to ‘lack-of-time’. Now we had time, but did we use it to the best of our ability? I had set myself 3 very simple tasks. Complete the novel that I had started some years ago, clear my various

hard-drives of images that were just taking up space, and finally, complete a distance learning course that I had begun with good intentions and never completed. That was on Day 1 of the 21… By Day 2, I realized that all my original notes for my novel had vanished and I was not in the mood to begin from scratch again. I did find 4 chapters and the ending, but the intervening years had obscured the core reason for the novel…and it REALLY seemed like hard work to begin again. Surely that would leave me more time to focus on the

other two? I did attempt to clean out the multitude of drives that I have lying in various drawers in my office. That too got off to a great start. However, once I realized the magnitude of the task ahead, I balked. If it was just a few hundred images it might not have been too bad, but this was more than 40000 images collected from various travels over decades. I have saved almost every good, bad or indifferent image I have ever taken and have stored them in a system that not even the Enigma machine could have deciphered. I cleared one folder before I waved the white flag and capitulated. It is easier to invest in more hard-drives. And finally, the distance learning course that has been ongoing for about 19 years (and the course should have taken 12 months) Once again, I started out brighteyed and bushy-tailed, and I did pass the first module that I attempted. But that got me thinking that I knew it all and that I could thumb-suck the multiple-choice questions in the next module. Apparently not, as I failed dismally. But did I let that affect me? Of course, I did and in keeping with projects 1 & 2, I packed in the course with almost immediate effect. In less than 21 days I had effectively achieved nothing at all! But wait, I did work out that 11 times around our garden gave me the equivalent of 1km and those ‘walks’ became important to my sanity and they lasted through the hard lockdown levels until we were allowed out of our properties to exercise in the streets and parks again. Until next time, stay safe and stay healthy.

As you may have seen in last week’s Kruger2Canyon, the time has come for me to extract myself from our beloved K2C and return as a visitor to Hoedspruit in future. March 31 will see the official hand over of Kruger2Canyon to Mark Bishop as owner, and David Batzofin as editor in chief. I wish them all the very best and hope that you will continue your valued support of K2C. The process will be a slow hand over that will take 3 to 6 months. I will be 100% involved until the new team are comfortable and confident with the running of our towns most loved rag. As you can imagine this is a process that is important not only for me, and the new team, but for the town as a whole.

ABOUT THE TEAM Mark is an entrepreneur from Johannesburg and has old ties to Hoedspruit. His Father owned a farm in the Timbavati many years ago and he was brought up spending many wonderful holidays in the bush, when Hoedspruit was merely a petrol station and railway siding! Mark was involved with a publication called Gaming for Africa some years ago, he is a keen photographer and eloquent writer. Welcome back to the newsroom Mark. David comes with a wealth of journalistic knowledge. He is working towards a FGASA qualification, is an accomplished journalist, presenter and blogger and he is no stranger to the bush. David’s writings have been published in major national newspapers as well as international magazines, he is no newcomer to the news arena. His passion for writing, is well known in the tourism, travel and hospi-

tality industry. I am excited for the future of the paper and for new ideas and fresh blood in the K2C newsroom. I wish Mark every success and I will go above and beyond to ensure a successful transition. Please support and welcome these guys as they launch forth on their adventure to make sure that Kruger2Canyon remains the best loved publication in the Lowveld! As always telling the great stories about all the incredible people and events in our area.

Meet award-winning blogger, travel writer and photographer, David Batzofin who joined our team in January, and as of April 2021 will be taking over the role as K2C’s editor in chief.

Hellos and goodbyes NEWS & VIEWS

Heidi Lee Smith ‘Like wildflowers, you must allow yourself to grow in all the places people thought you never would’. I love this quote by E.V. Rogina, and I feel it’s relevance to me right

now. Our beautiful mountains in Hoedspruit have a certain hold on me, and throughout all the numerous projects I have tackled and with their many ups and downs, I have felt the mountains’ solid sta-

bility as a firm symbol of value in my life. The mountains have been a constant lesson and reminder to me of the fact that the way light shines on a subject reveals a variety of realities and moods. Similarly, perspective will give you a point of view that none other does. Some days you will only see a two-dimensional violet cut out, and then another day the mountains will be a deep dramatic blue with clouds billowing over them, and on another day they will be almost transparent, or on fire with purples and reds of a bushveld sunset. Every day, every ray of light tells its own story, while the mountain actually always stays the same. Thank you to all, for the

many messages, each one is a testament to the way the light caught me at some particular time. As I step back and begin the process of extracting myself as an immersed and engaged participant in Hoedspruit, I feel a bit like a bird taking off, with the wind lifting me up to see a different perspective, knowing I will return from time to time to enjoy the fruits and friends, and beautiful people I have made roots with, in the area. I am reminded of an EE Cummings’ quote that has resonated with me since I was a child: ‘we are the sum total of our experiences’. So I will keep striving to experience my wonderful life to the full, and making as much of a difference as I can every step I take.

Letters Rock on wonderful woman! Dearest Heidi It is with an emotional lump in my throat that I write a few words to say THANK YOU. Thank You for being there for the community, Thank You for being brave, Thank You for being fair and consistent in your reporting and Thank You for always having

time to support conservation. I wish you well, you created something wonderfully local and I have no doubt that the K2C paper will grow from strength to strength. All the best my friend. Lots of love Sharon Haussmann

From the editor @Kruger2Canyon News... Dear Heidi, What an adventure it’s been – starting on the day almost exactly 10 years ago when I, newly arrived in Hoedspruit, contacted you to see if you wanted any help with the newspaper. Your reply – “yes, yes, and yes please” – opened a new world to me. How would I have met and got to know the exciting people I have interviewed,

visited places, and attended events tourists would pay a fortune for, if it wasn’t for you and K2C? Ten years is a long time to collaborate and we have got to know and respect each other despite having such totally different backgrounds. But, as they say, opposites attract, and I have enjoyed every issuew! You have become a real friend

Kerstin Nyberg Peart (left) and Barry Peart (right) with Michele Merrifield at DAKTARI

to both my husband Barry and me, and he is proud to have been the “K2C photographer”! We wish you all the best and we know we’ll see you when you’re next in Hoedspruit. Kerstin Nyberg Peart Dearest Kerstin There are people you meet who step into your life through a side door and then embed themselves deep in your heart... and that for sure is what you and Barry have done. I so clearly remember meeting you at Tshukudu when you were still a tourist, visiting Hoedspruit. You had become a great friend of Ala Sussens after many years of visiting Hoedspruit. I had come to Tshukudu to interview Ala for the imminent launch of her new autobiography: ‘There’s an elephant in my window’. I remember discovering that

Heidi, we wish you a new journey of success and happiness as you turn a new page in the book of life. Thank you for always supporting our business, we enjoyed working with you tremendously.

you were headed to see the gorillas in Rwanda, and I asked you to write us a story for Kruger2Canyon, it was the closest I was going to get to seeing them in person. If I remember correctly you wrote us two or three articles and so our connection began. Little did I know that you and Barry would return as residents to Hoedspruit, and then come and volunteer to be my ‘best editor’ and free-spirited journalist ever. Thank you!

Yes, we are very different, you are a scientist, and I am a dizzy arty-wanna-be journalist. Thank you for the scientist in you and thank you for your patience with all my typos and terrible spelling, not to mention grammar and punctuation. I must have pushed you to the limit on many occasions, but you just stayed calm and focused and ensured that I didn’t drop more balls than necessary in the process of the deadline frenzy.

You and Barry have played a huge part in ensuring we have a quality product ‘on the shelf’ each week. I can never thank you enough for the dedication you have committed to over the past ten years. You made a huge difference to my sanity and assurance that I could be confident in publishing Kruger2Canyon each time. I am grateful for the day our paths crossed. Heidi

Dear Heidi, A big thank you from Wild Shots Outreach and all our students. You have always been incredibly supportive of our programme and our students. To give just two examples: You have featured articles and photos by two of our graduates: Rifumo Mathebula and Wisani Ngwenya. K2C was also kind enough to offer them work experience and they grabbed this amazing opportunity.

Rifumo is now employed as Media Team Leader with Conservation South Africa and among his duties is leading WSO courses. Wisani has just started his second year at AFDA Media College in Johannesburg having last year deliv-ered a huge public awareness campaign “Play Your Part” with PR firm Ebony and Ivory, and Brand SA. Celebrating 10 years in business Loreen McDonald

In 2011 Deon & Dina de Waal moved to Hoedspruit and started Mantis Pest Control. With a handful of clients and a load of perseverance, their business quickly expanded as they provided excellent and affordable solutions in the field of pest control. They soon expanded into the lodge industry and their name has become synonymous with quality, personalised service. Deon chose the praying mantis as a symbol, as the mantis is an extraordinary insect, humble yet highly efficient at killing its prey — a perfect pest controller. Now, 10 years later, they are so blessed by all the support from their customers in and around Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa. They serve clients in Timbavati, Klaserie, Balule, Kampersrus, in residential properties in the numerous wildlife estates, and in the Thornybush and Guernsey area. Several years ago Mantis was approached

‘n Hoedspruit boodskap

Gerrie Kruger

Farewell to one of our Founders We have all seen and faced so much change in the last year and have become stronger and learnt how to adapt and live with the constant ebb and flow. The changes around us have also given many people the confidence to challenge themselves, follow their dreams and take on new journeys. Heidi Lee Smith, one of the founding mothers of Southern Cross Schools, has embarked on one such journey. Although she no longer has children at our school she is still a large part of our school and its community. People who know her, and have worked alongside her, will always hold this brave, determined woman in high regard. It was her vision and determination, along with a handful of others, that got Southern Cross Schools off the ground and allowed a dream to become an amazing reality. We are forever indebted for the energy and enthusiasm she invested in Southern Cross Schools. We are so fortunate to have had her in Hoedspruit for so long and are incredibly grateful for all the work she put into our little town, but as with all things, nothing lasts forever. The weekly newspaper Kruger2Canyon, which Heidi founded over 18 years ago, is ready for a new leader and she feels now is the time to step aside and let in new blood. Heidi, you will be missed, but we know you will be back even if it is just to visit us. We wish you well on your exciting new adventures and will always hold you close to our hearts. Hamba Khale. Zanne in Australia Dear Heidi I’ve always wondered if there will ever come a day when you will be able to let your K2C baby go - and here we are. It is both a sad and an exciting time! I guess it is like raising kids - giving it your all for so long, and then, suddenly - they’re all grown up! You’ve done well, my friend! You have impacted so many lives with your tireless efforts to promote and showcase the good, the beauty, the amazing people and everything else that the Greater Hoedspruit area has to offer! An impact I believe, will in some cases, last forever. I can’t help but wonder if the community will ever truly understand and appreciate just how much you have invested of yourself - everything you are and have (and your family!) - into Hoedspruit and the Kruger2Canyon week after week, year after year. I had the privilege of walking a short way alongside you on your journey. I’ve experience first-hand just how much it took and how incredibly driven and passionate you are. I have learned so much from you, experienced incredible things with you, and learned to love and share your passion for the ‘little Rag’ as you refer to it. In the words of Norman Vincent Peale, you can think excitement, talk excitement, act out excitement, and you are bound to become an excited person. Or, you can think, talk and act yourself into dullness, monotony or into unhappiness. Heidi has always chosen the former. Building inspiration, excitement and a surging depth of joy regardless of the circumstances. This, coupled with perseverance, tenacity, love and care is what Heidi is all about. You started out as the ‘annoying’ - very determined English lady wanting me to work for you to becoming my boss and eventually ended up being one of my best and closest friends. I will always be grateful for that! I have often said you are one of the most mis-understood people I know. Your fierce passion and out-of-the box thinking often landed you in very interesting situations but somehow, you’ve always managed to turn a bad situation around! The Kruger2Canyon is indeed a unique publication because of you, and I know you will be dearly missed. I know that wherever you go from here, you will keep on impacting people’s lives for the better. Mark and David, I wish you both all the best for your new venture. I am sure you will add your own colour and flair to K2C but I hope that you will keep the sense of community spirit, humour and passion for people that everybody came to love. My best wishes and prayers be with all of you. Zanne Kruger lished Southern African Wildlife College in 1996. Our boys, now 28, and who were inseparable, are the ones that introduced us when in Grade R at Mariepskop. We went on to chat through many a project, including the start-up of a local wildlife-based school, which thanks to Heidi’s and Sue Godding’s perseverance became Southern Cross. I also recall when Heidi decided to take on the start-up of the local newspaper, now the much-loved and read Kruger2Canyon. Talk about blood, sweat and tears…hats off to Heidi, as anyone that works on newspaper deadlines certainly knows what it takes to get each edition out. It is difficult to fledge a child, in this case your beloved newspaper, but Heidi you have given it wings, big wings, and we wish its new caretakers the absolute best. It’s so sad to hear you won’t be steering the K2C ship anymore, but I know that your new life at the coast is so full and rewarding that you have to let go of some things to make space for more on that side. How you managed to publish our weekly paper without fail for 18 years (even through Covid) astounds me, as it wasn’t the only thing on your plate living in this town! You started a school! You raised four children. You got involved in every Bush Banquet, school event, fundraiser, flood and crisis that this town had. You backed every new little

business that started with an introduction to the community (including ours 11 years ago). You sacrificed family time by staying in Hoedspruit when Alan moved to White River to start a business there during dire times. You faced awful backlash from some community members over the years when you reported on the truth. You continued to run our town paper long after you had moved to the coast to start a new life with your family all in one place. And you did it all with grace, empathy, care and a smile on your face! I’m glad you still have a house here, which means bush holidays are still on the cards. Thank you for everything! Colleen Wall

Wishes from Caryn Wishing you all the best, Heidi and family, you guys are an inspiration to us, you are a special person and wonderful friend, love from The Fisher-Bowie family Mantis Heidi, very nice farewell article!! Thank you for your effort, always. We would also like to thank you from Moov to Move and Mantis for all the news your brought into

Hi Heidi, This is really sad. Louise and I have only been in Hoedspruit for a year yet from our observations you are a pillar of the community and it is going to be considerably poorer for you leaving. Louise and I hope that you re-

know, that is what you have always strived for. We will miss you and your amazing energy but thank goodness we still have you and your family as a part of the Hoedspruit team! Wishing Mark and David all the best with their new adventure and we are looking forward to reading the new Kruger2Canyon newspaper! Traci Thomson

Rhino Revolution

A rhino-sized thank you from the team at Rhino Revolution for all the coverage you have given this Hoedspruit NPO over the last five years. We are so grateful for your support, publishing our stories and images and

promoting our fundraising events. Thank you for also helping to raise awareness about the threats that rhino and pangolin face from poaching, and how this community can help get involved and make a difference. Anna Mussi, Manager, RR Team Rhino Revolution

Hi Heidi Congratulations on all that you’ve achieved with K2C and good luck for the next exciting adventure. We look forward to seeing you and the family next time you’re in Hoedspruit. Thanks Ryan Thomson turn to visit us in the future. We are firm believers in one good turn deserves another, so our offer still stands. Please do come and stay when you return to this neck of the woods. Give us some warning so that we can clear the calendar for you. Kind Regards Frans and Louise

A Personal NOTE Dear HeidI Hoedspruit is not so much a small town, but a big community; making Kruger2Canyon the most unique local newspaper because you know the people featured and have a keen and personal interest in their story. Your heartfelt support of BobBob over his epic two-year journey to regain some sight was not just a fantastic asset in trying to raise funds but was the most incredible boost for Bob who was continuously thrilled to be featured in the newspaper - twice on the front cover! - and thoroughly enjoyed his ‘celebrity’ status. Often on his long journey, it was just the boost he needed. Immense thanks and appreciation to you Heidi, from Brass and BobBob xx Brass Brassett

Above: Rhino Revolution’s “Lucky Five” orphans, now living wild and free, and whose stories the K2C community has followed over the past five years. NB these rhino are dehorned.

Personal Morning Heidi, I know you wanted this to happen for some time! I am so grateful that K2C can go on with competent people at the helm. Your influence will be missed but your work and your footprint will stay. You have such an amazing legacy!! Your involvement

in our community is well known. We will miss your positive inspiration every week but we hope that we will see you around. You have set a high bar for community involvement and community building!! Now we are looking forward to see you excel in future. Kindest regards Marie Helm

our homes every week and especially all the ads you placed for Moov, it is much appreciated! May your journey be a blessed one and the best one ever! Have a great week! Kind regards Dina deWaal DAKTARI Dear Heidi, I did not read the previous K2C I must admit so I did not know. I am sad in a way that you are leaving your K2C baby but so excited for you!!! I think there is always a time coming when we have to step back and give ourselves new directions and purpose in life. I personally think it is very courageous of you and it takes some “balls” to make such a decision. Well done! I admire you. Hopefully we will have the opportunity to see more of you when you will come back to Hoedspruit. I was so happy to see you when you came with Barry and Kerstin. Michelle and Ian Merrifield

..more letters and more wish- The Ginger Jar es, thank you for each one! Enomis Designs cc Thank you Heidi, We met Heidi when we first bought property in Hoedspruit in 2001. When we arrived in Hoedspruit we thought that for such a small town like Hoedspruit to have its own Newspaper, let alone a thriving one, was magic. From the start, Heidi has asked me if I had any story that I bring it to her, so that she could write something about it. Your commitment to reporting stories about the people of Hoedspruit and surroundings, and what our town has to offer, is something that is to be applauded. Heidi has always supported me, may it be through publishing stories on my children’s school careers (academic or sport), on my business or on my private endeavours such as the Hoedspruit Golf Clinic. We absolutely love this little newspaper. It has kept our community in touch with one another, which is something that is truly special, especially because Hoedspruit is a small town. Thank you Heidi for being so passionate about what you do- we will miss you tons! Simone Braun Hoedspruit Reptile Centre

A personal note

HI Heidi This is very sad news indeed! We know the paper will be in good hands. Thank you for working with us this last year and giving us the much-needed exposure. Good luck and farewell. Chris Cooke

Hi Heidi Aaaaaah, next adventure. Go girl! Thanks for the part you played in my story. You wouldn’t believe how much I needed it and to have you as a friend. For me, a new has already come in play and I have the strength I need to get through it. Until we meet again, best of luck! Carina Nel

Kind regards Kjell Bismeyer A personal note Morning Heidi, I agree, sometimes one just needs to do what’s best for oneself. I envy you; I would like to see the turtles! Alan McSmith Safaris Dear Heidi, It’s unreal to believe that 18 years ago, our first community newspaper was born. Hoedspruit has gone through a metamorphosis since then but as they say, some things change and some stay the same. K2C has seen and lived it all, shared many wonderful events and platformed some incredible achievements from so many colourful and dedicated people that call this town home. I n many ways K2C has been the integral community rock that has seen it all and then some ... with you at the wheel, ever diligent, dedicated and fearlessly committed to environmental and community issues. Our lioness. We wish continued success for K2C going forward… and for the Smith herd, lots of blessed health, prosperity and quality turtle-time with your amazing family! You will be missed! Go well Heids… Alan & Sarah mcSmith

Selati Game Reserve Hi Heidi That is incredibly sad to hear. You have nurtured and grown your “baby” that has been the newspaper to really be our one-stop news centre and I wish you all the best in future. Warmest regards Lindsey Jones A personal note Morning Heidi, I agree, sometimes one just needs to do what’s best for oneself. I envy you; I would like to see the turtles! Good luck, I and I know the community will surely miss you. Love, Mitzi van Rensburg

Zingelaulwazi Dear Heidi. Makes me so sad to lose you from our community. But I KNOW you will be successful and continue learning through your new profession. We all must go when God calls, no matter how it looks or what our objections are. That is the only way to truly live a life in synch with our Divine plan. So go with much love and many blessings for the road ahead. It was a true pleasure working with you and I really appreciate the high quality standards you upheld with the paper all these years. Ask the guys to do a feature on you from time to time, to let us know how you are doing and what is happening in your life. Stay well, stay safe. All the best. Becky Harmon

Sam and her twin sister Lauren have been baking their own birthday cakes since they were 9 years old- not because they had to, but because they have always loved baking – a skill they learned from both of their grandmothers. Fast forward to today, and Sam has opened up her own baking business - The Ginger Jar a small operation using her mom’s kitchen as HQ. In years gone by the only time she baked, iced and decorated cookies was around Christmas, and after years of friends and family suggesting that she sell them, she finally started selling in December 2020. After a fairly successful festive season, she decided to invest in some more cookie cutters – a collection that’s grown to over 160 shapes. Having always been a leftbrain oriented person, and with a BSc Honours background - Sam enjoys icing and decorating cookies as

a creative outlet, learning as she goes along having had no formal training. Through word of mouth, selling through the Bush Basket at Kamogelo Centre and her social media, she has manged to get her little business going - focusing on cookies, cakes and cupcakes. Baking in Hoedspruit has its challenges - rolling out cookie dough in 40 degree weather is no joke! Having always loved the heat - for the first time in her life she is looking forward to winter - when her icing won’t melt and there will be no swimming pool dips required during baking. Sam’s extensive collection of cutters allows her to cater for any event- from kids’ birthday parties to baby showers to Valentine’s day, Easter, Christmas and a whole lot of other whacky events which could include dinosaurs, sail boats, pineapples or flamingos!

Wildebeest, an animal designed by a committee David Batzofin ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’, was an adage that had been drummed into me as a youngster. However, during my years of spending time in the bush, I had come to be judgmental of this particular species. Wildebeest give the impression that they have been assembled by a committee. Think about it. They have the horns of a buffalo, the stripes of a zebra, the slope of a hyena, the tail of a horse, and the brain of a guinea fowl. However, all that was about to change with a herd that I had regularly spent time with for almost 40 years. It started out innocently enough with a walk on a property that I have called home since 1977. Although there was free roaming plains game, guests were allowed to wander around, unaccompanied by a staff member, interacting with giraffe, zebra, and this herd of wildebeest. I had decided that I needed images of the wildebeest for upcoming articles that I was working on and I walked off in search of the herd. Now you, dear reader, have to

understand that wildebeest are not known for their intelligence, or so I had been lead to believe. It, therefore, came as a shock that in this particular instance I had totally underrated them and the manoeuver that they were about to employ to get me out into the open and in a position where they could inflict harm should they wish to. Walking towards where the herd was grazing out in the open, I did notice that it seemed to have split into two, with a few animals to my right and left, while the main portion, together with the herd bull, was ahead of me in the distance. Although the animals on either side of me seemed to pose no threat, the herd bull and I had never seen eye to eye and I was always cautious and respectful when I was in his presence. However, in this particular instance, he seemed to be far away enough so as not to pose a threat. But it turned out that not only had I misjudged the distance, but I had also misjudged his intent and the relevance of the animals that were following on either side of me. I was so busy tak-

w ing pictures that when I next looked up, the main herd was much closer than I felt comfortable with and the animals on either side of me had begun starting to move towards me. I am uncertain if I had a ‘lightbulb’ moment where I realized that I had been manipulated, but there was a moment when I realized that most of my escape routes had effectively been blocked by the herd. If you go into the bush often enough it will be drummed into you “DO NOT RUN, NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS”. Now that is certainly true for the predator species, run and you are considered prey. For the large dangerous game, like elephants, rhino, and hippo, they can all out-

run a human so it is best to either stand still and scream or head for the closest tree. But wildebeest? I would not have given them a second thought. Seeing that they are a prey species, I figured that they would turn tail if I made myself big and noisy, so that is what I did. I stood my ground, waved my arms, and shouted. Then realizing that this was not going to work, I hitched up my shorts and with all my bushcraft heading out of the window, I took off toward the closest place of safety that I knew, a space that was about 100m from where I started running. I did not look back, I did not take my eyes off my end goal. I made it to safety and it was at that point that,
