Old friends meet

ShowMe Hoedspruit is here...

HOEDSPRUIT - It’s a small world when old Rotarians from far afield find themselves at the Rotary/Buco Hoedspruit Beer Fest. Guy Braas, a former Captain with Luxair, (Luxembourg Airline), known to his friends as Speedy, spent all his free time in his much loved Lowveld. He was born in the Belgian Congo, and his love of Africa remained intact during his career in Europe. Speedy is a member of the Echternach & Moselle Rotary Club in a medieval city in Luxembourg, and he would visit Sabie and later the White River Rotary Club (where he eventually became President) when in South Africa. It is here that he and Don Priest became firm friends. In 1988 he visited Koka

HOEDSPRUIT - ShowMe Hoedspruit is a brand new venture which was launched on January 23. Shannon Rombi has recently purchased and will be operating the ShowMe Hoedspruit franchise, which has opened next to the Cooked Restaurant just two kilometres south of Hoedspruit on the R40 at Bosveld Centre. ShowMe is a one-stop online destination for anything and everything around Hoedspruit. They take pride in offering local businesses a platform to get exposure to the franchise’s million plus unique users from around the globe every month. This online destination currently has twenty eight franchises in South Africa and abroad, all sharing the same network, which means you get exposed to the entire global network by listing on the franchise in Hoedspruit. Sales representative of ShowMe Hoedspruit, James Fourie, explained that it is now common that most people use internet for business. James said ‘to research holiday destinations, to get news, to advertise and promote events and much more, this is why ShowMe offers an easy to use platform that facilitates all of these aspects and more’. ‘Being Hoedspruiters ourselves, we care about the town and the environment, ShowMe offers all non-profits and charities free feature listings on our website to generate more awareness for wor-

Moyà near Orpen gate, run by Bruce and Judy Meeser from Hoedspruit, and he loved it so much that he bought a plot on Raptors View with the intention of retiring here. His wife passed away and he never fulfilled that dream, but comes to stay in Balule with Richard van Schalkwijk from Imagine Africa, two to three times a year. In October he and his fellow Rotarian from Einsiedlen (Switzerland), Reinard Pascher, also a fanatic bush lover, were invited to the Hoedspruit Beer Fest only to find that it was organised by Hoedspruit Rotary which he did not know existed, as it is a fairly new club. Here he met his old friend Don with whom he had lost touch; it had been nearly 20 years since they last met. The amazing fact is that on that day in October 2017, there were at least nine worldwide Rotary Clubs sharing a beer at the Hoedspruit/ Buco Beer Fest - where all the old friends meet. Rotary and Buco will be hosting another rousing beer fest on 5th October this year, and the proceeds will again go to Farm Watch in recognition of the fantastic work they do in keeping our community safe.

increase our service area and make this beautiful part of South Africa easily accessible to locals and tourists alike, so let us work together to

tive communication to Hoedspruit residents when the town was without water due to non-payment to the Blyde pipeline scheme. Various issues were raised by community members, and have been taken on by the ward committee. One of the many success stories that we have been involved with is the repair of most of the potholes on the R527. Our Ward Councillor, Christine du Preez, tirelessly followed up on the repair issue until it was done towards the end of last year. The streetlights at Le Bamba fall within the Maruleng municipal area. Officials are regularly reminded when these lights do not work, and as such there are always some street lights not working in town. The Great North bus ticket sales office was also without power for a long time. This issue was reported and resolved. The Ward 1 Councillor at-

tended all meetings related to the repair of the Guernsey Bridge that washed away in 2012. This bridge was repaired at the end of 2017, not without a fair amount of challenges. The Ward 1 Committee also took note of other concerns raised by community members, such as issues related to Jayzees and the informal housing at the bus station. A survey was done at the informal housing and a database was created of the individuals residing there. Byron Wright also compiled a report on all the boreholes in Hoedspruit. Chris Dreyer repaired the toilets at the hawker stalls several times. The Ward 1 Committee calls for a town clean-up almost monthly. We believe that Hoedspruit is a great town, and through community action, we can keep this town on the map. We look forward to a busy 2018!

Ward 1 highlights of 2017 HOEDSPRUIT - 2017 was certainly an interesting year for the Ward 1 Committee of Maruleng Municipality. For the first time in a long time, the DA elected Ward 1 Councillor of Maruleng has a functional, legally compliant ward committee, consisting of ten members selected by the community. These members are from all walks of life and bring diversity to the table. The function of the ward committee is mainly to be the voice of the community and to act as a communication medium between the community and the municipality. Communication greatly improved during 2017, and is done via social media as well as through other forums on which committee members also serve. Hoedspruit FM also contributed to our improved communication. A great example was the effec-

Caps off to the Cap Co

HOEDSPRUIT - Leaving city life behind was an easy choice for the team at The Cap Company. ‘We needed to get away from the hustle and bustle of Joburg,’ says owner David Waghorn, who has been visiting Hoedspruit for many years. Eventually the lure of the bush got the better of him. Together with his wife Donya, and his business partner Erik van der Merwe with wife Bo, they took the plunge just over a year ago and haven’t looked back. The two families left Joburg to open a sales office in Hoedspruit in December 2016. The Cap Company was established in 2000, and still has a branch in JHB. The company specialises in embroidery, silk screen printing onto all textiles, and pad printing onto corporate gifts etc… and have

been well received by the lodges and various businesses in and around town. ‘Tammy, our daughter, works for Southern Cross Schools’ new Sabi Sands satellite school, our son Dean is currently working on a yacht off shore, while the van der Merwe boys Regan, Reilly and Rowan have settled in at Southern Cross in Hoedspruit. The move has been amazing and we are all loving life in the bush,’ says David Back at the office, you will find David and Erik in the clothing and gift, sales department while Bo handles all the litho printing and signage and Donya keeps a check on the accounts. ‘We strive to offer a really good quality product, delivered with a very good service,’ David ends.

HOEDSPRUIT – The strike at the Maruleng Municipal Offices that took place on January 22 was instigated primarily in protest against the Municipal Manager, Mr S.J. Lethole, who is accused of being corrupt. Members of the Civic Warriors of Maruleng and other opposition parties insisted on the MM stepping down from his position due to the alleged corruption and nepotism taking place in the municipality. Strikers claim they are tired of the scandals that have been taking place within Maruleng. Angry community members from The Oaks vandalised the Municipality, over-throwing files and paperwork, and upturning dustbins in and outside the offices of the municipality. President of the Civic Warriors of Maruleng, Bob Mohlabe, explained to Kruger2Canyon that: ‘there was a traffic officer job position advertised somewhere last year where they (the Municipality) were looking for ten traffic officers in Maruleng Municipality, and during the process of the applications there was an sms circulating from higher places that explains who has been appointed for the positions’. ‘On November 1, 2017, I wrote a letter to the MM questioning what he knows about the sms that has been circulating and the names of the peo-

Rotary raises R150 000 for good causes HOEDSPRUIT - For the third year running, Rotary Hoedspruit have raised a substantial amount of money for anti-poaching and a local children’s development project. It has handed over considerable donations to the reserves traversed during the Rotary 2017 K2C Cycle Tour, these include Kapama, Thornybush, Timbavati and Blue Canyon Reserves who so generously allow the cyclists to pass through their properties. The hand-over ceremony was held at the Safari Wine Club this year and was attended by all the hard working supporters of the 2017 event. The next cycle tour is scheduled for Saturday 21 July 2018 and once again we will be aiming high and raising even more for anti-poaching and another development project still to be identified. 2018 will see 100 cyclists riding 100km!

Against all odds HOEDSPRUIT - Leonie and JP waited seven long years for their beautiful baby girl. They finally had their pigeon pair and could not have been happier. But moments after Leandra was born, she was rushed to the NICU and their world was shattered. She had no voice, her face was asymmetrical and she had an extra thumb. Within the next two days she went into heart failure and they were told to expect the worst. Within a week she went from 3.3 kilograms to a mere 1.8 kilograms and was extremely weak. After a gruelling six hour operation to repair her heart, she was finally discharged from the hospital at five weeks old, only to return two days later due to paralysed vocal chords and feeding issues. She had a feeding tube inserted into her tummy and they were told that she would never be able to eat or drink, and that the feeding tube would be a lifelong commitment. At eight weeks old their baby girl was finally allowed to go home. Her diagnosis - CHARGE syndrome. Her prognosis - she would be profoundly mentally handicapped, deaf and blind, never walk or talk, and many other complications. But Leonie and JP refused to believe what the doctors said, and they told them so! At one year old, Leandra had a suspected hiatus hernia and during the barium swallow they discovered that her swallowing reflex had somehow corrected itself! She had no problem taking to food, but she had developed an oral aversion to liquid substances because she wasn’t used to drinking. It took Leonie five years to train her to drink, but she finally won the battle and Leandra has been tube free for the past three years. Leonie spent hours teaching

Leandra to walk, and at seven years old, she finally got up and walked by herself! This mom’s determination against all odds is absolutely astounding! Leandra is now eleven years old and she is walking, eating and drinking - things the doctors said she would never do. She is on the autism spectrum, has low muscle tone and has had four major operations in her short life time. Although she is near-sighted, she can see. She is deaf and mute, but she hugs, kisses and laughs out loud. She has extreme behavioural issues and cannot be left alone for a second, because she will break everything in sight. JP and Leonie have had to fix many a broken window at the hand of Leandra, not because of a lack of supervision, but because she will be fine the one moment and then suddenly explode the next. She also hurts herself during these outbursts. She cries all day and night for no reason and sleeps for only about three hours at night with no nap during the day, a tiring regime for her mom. She is on a very strong anti-psychotic drug and mood

stabilizer which isn’t really making much of a difference. Sedatives don’t work for her either. Leandra is also incontinent, needing to wear diapers, and will often end up with poo smeared all over the place. While Leonie has been trying to get her potty trained, but so far, she has been fighting a losing battle. Leandra brings a new meaning to being a ‘full-time job’. Leonie cannot work and spends her days looking after Leandra every second of the day. ‘I am always tired, but then she looks at me with those beautiful brown eyes, I get a huge smile or a pat on my back, and my heart melts!’ says Leonie. Leonie and JP heard about the Family Hope Centre through a bizarre set of events and while circumstances are such that they will not be able to attend this year, they would really like to attend the PTC and evaluations next year for Leandra. This is a special family, with humble hearts and broken hope. We hope to be able to assist them next year to get to the PTC and evaluations.

Pay Hope Forward to the Rethabile Centre HOEDSPRUIT / ACORNHOEK - Stepping into someone else’s life can be an uncomfortable thing to do, but daring to step into the shoes of parents with special needs children is guaranteed to be challenging for most of us. The situation in our town and rural community regarding special needs children is very real and very uncomfortable, with very limited resources. A few years ago 2 mothers of children with cerebral palsy, Jennifer and Princess, were sent on a course to be trained to run workshops for mothers with cerebral palsied children, to help them understand and manage their children’s condition better. This initial training and subsequent training and support was done by the NGO ‘Malamulele Onwards’. Jennifer and Princess have been running training workshops for parents of children with cerebral palsy ever since. As a result of her training, Jennifer started a stimulation centre for children with disabilities, Rethabile Centre, based in Arthurseat, close to Acornhoek, in 2016. Local Kampersrus residents, Ulrike and Juergen, have donated specialised wheelchairs and ‘Madiba-Buggies’ to families with Cerebral Palsy children in and around Acornhoek. ‘Our vision is to make it easier for the parents and caregivers to take care of these special children, to make them more mobile,’ says Ulrike who has a love for these children. Ulrike also helps fund the workshops that Jennifer and Princess run for parents of children with disabilities. As of next week, these dedicated moms will also be involved in a weekly program at Tintswalo Hospital where they give valuable advice and assistance to other parents with Cerebral Palsy children. The Pay Hope Forward initiative is currently raising funds to be able to support mothers and children with disabilities, by sending local therapists from Hoedspruit and Tintswalo on The Family Hope Center Parent Training Conference. The conference is being held in Pretoria during February and funds are urgently needed to facilitate the attendance. This valuable training conference will bring the expertise of a team of Doctors and brain development specialists, who will train parents, caregivers and therapists in techniques which have had measurable results in children with all sorts of neuro related challenges. For more information visit www.familyhopecenter.com or www.brainchildfund.org.

THULAMAHASHE - One of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Reserves active programmes is the establishment of various Environmental Monitors within the region, each focussing on a wide range of support activities leading towards a more sustainable community. The EM groups include the Rhino Ambassadors, who are involved not only in promoting positive rhino conservation messages within the greater communities, but also involved in broader education for sustainable development (ESD) both within the schools and within general community organisations in the villages surrounding the Kruger National Park and the adjacent private nature reserves. On January 16, the K2C BR Rhino Ambassadors EMs were all smiling as they received their NQF level four environmental education certificate from WESSA (the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa) under the Timbavati Foundation. This took place at Vukuzenzela Nursery in Thula-

Rhino ambassador EM Cosatu Nxumalo told Kruger2Canyon News that he was very excited to have attained this great achievement. breed dogs. According to Anri, people are very keen to have a working dog, without understanding the commitment and hard work that goes into being a working dog owner. The i-WORK project is here to inform people about these dogs, and to make sure people choose the right breed for their situation and their family. Anri also wants to show people that working dogs do not have a bad life, but actually love what they do: the dogs see “working” as play, and enjoy it very much. She points out what an important role working dogs can play in many situations. It was Herkie, one of her pointers, who found the bullet casing in the dark at the murder scene of Hoedspruit farmer Christo Redelinghuys, and this can be used as evidence in court. The i-WORK project is also a platform for the rehoming of working breed dogs. Anri and her partner Divan Oosthuizen take in dogs in need of a new home, and start basic training with them, training each dog as far as the dog is capable. Working with Hoedspruit Paws, Anri has seen that dogs with basic training get rehomed easier and faster, because not everyone knows or understands how important it is to train a dog. She only started the project at the beginning of 2018, and seven dogs are already in the programme. The dogs are not only from the Hoedspruit region, but from as far as Naboomspruit, Thabazimbi and Phalaborwa, emphasising the need for this project.

One of the dogs has already found its “forever home”! The project receives no funding at the moment apart from Anri’s own support. The training is in professional hands: Anri’s partner, Divan, is a SASSETA (Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority) Dog Handling Level 1 to 5 dog handler. Divan is currently busy training one of their own dogs in drug detection, and, once trained, the dog will be made available to the Hoedspruit community and schools to help with the rising drug problem in our town. At the moment the closest working dogs in this field are in Giyani. Anri also wants to tell the dog owners of Hoedspruit that she now does the Must Love Dogs dog grooming in the clients’ own homes, for the owners’ and dogs’ convenience. She says that the response has been amazing, as people love not having to drive their dogs to get grooming done. Most of the clients aren’t even at home when Anri comes to do the grooming, making it very easy for every dog owner to get their dog groomed, so no more excuses of “I don’t have time”! It is the 1st service of its kind in Hoedspruit, says Anri our little town is growing! The i-WORK project is in the process of registering as an NPO. They already have their Facebook page: https:// www.facebook.com/I-work1767191706922797/ You can also contact Anri on 083 843 0331 if you are interested in adopting a dog.

Good morning, Hoedspruit

Villiers Steyn HOEDSPRUIT - Every Saturday morning at 7am, a group of early birds gather at the Thirsty Giraffe just north of town to partake in the Hoedspruit park run. In fact, park runs happen all over the world every single Saturday of the year and are always exactly 5km long. Taking part won’t cost you a cent and you can either sprint, jog or even walk the lovely bushveld route.

You do, however, have to register, which is also free and very easy. Once registered, you get sent a bar code that you have to print out and bring with when you run/ walk. It will then be scanned at the end of the race so that your official time can be recorded and posted on the parkrun website. To register, please visit https://www. parkrun.co.za/register. The very first Hoedspruit parkrun on the 26th of August 2017 still holds the attendance

record of 229 participants, but with a little bit of motivation, I believe we can break it! Remind all your friends and family who are already park runners to commit this coming Saturday and challenge those who aren’t to register and join. Please remember that young children need to be accompanied by adults the whole time and unfortunately no dogs are allowed. See you all on Saturday at 7am for more running fun!
