FACT or Fiction? Ntebo Inama & Jarrod van der Westhuizen Southern Cross Learners
HOEDSPRUIT - Last year our ECAL (Eco Centred Action Learning) teacher, Mr Ian Shoebotham, set out on a mission to turn 200 square metres of the schools’ land into a hugely productive vegetable garden using permaculture techniques. His mission was to provide a practical and hands on opportunity for us to learn about what goes into producing the food that we eat and how we can do it in a sustainable way. We began by learning the processes of composting and bokashi, using all the schools’ garden and food waste, and utilising local resources like
horse manure from the stables and old thatching grass. Another goal was to remove a lot of the alien invasive plants on the school property and include these in our compost. Over time we were able to turn the dry patch of land into beautifully fertile soil. Learners, parents and teachers all pulled together to tackle the massive challenge of animal proofing the nursery before any planting could be done. We dug deeply trenched chicken wire mesh that covered the whole area, shade cloth covering for the roof, and we even planted Christ Thorn plants around the perimeter to deter animals. When choosing what to plant, Mr Shoebotham explained to us about heirloom
seeds which have been handed down through generations and how they are open pollinated. This means you can collect the seeds from your produce at the end of the year and plant it again. It’s very different from most of the fruit and vegetables that we buy today which is grown from cross bred varieties whose seeds would be sterile. Another goal was to challenge the learners’ perception of food and what it looks like; so we planted some weird and wonderful different varieties of fruit and vegetables. From Golden Zucchini, Blue Peter beans (which are bright purple) and Glass Corn (a multi-coloured mielie), we are harvesting the most amazing food that ...cont on pg4...

Vusi our K2C hero Lucky Rapitsi
HOEDSPRUIT - South Africa has numerous heroes who make it their daily tasks to protect our wildlife. Veldwagters is a TV series soon to be launched that will showcase the hard work and dedication of these committed people on the ground. On January 22 the Veldwagters team met up with Vusi Tshabalala from the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Re-
gion (K2C BR) to experience the day-to-day work he does within the Biosphere. On this day Vusi visited the Beretta Primary School in Acornhoek where he was teaching the Grade 6 class about snakes. ‘Fortunately enough, the night before I had rescued a Mozambiquan spitting cobra from someone’s home in Sigagule Village, which made my class even more exciting and the filming more fun’ Vusi explained.
Vusi told Kruger2Canyon, ‘We then went to Welverdiend where we visited a grannies’ drop in centre to film more about rhino conservation. While filming, the grannies indicated that they had never seen the big five nor been on a game drive and they were touched by the presentation given and also sad that the rhinos are being poached. Vusi explained that the film crew were so moved by the response from the grannies that they offered to sponsor a game drive to the Kruger National Park in an open game viewing vehicle, and a nice brunch. Vusi said ‘the trip was such a success and brought so much joy to the grannies in such a way that we are now looking at ways of doing this once a month with different communities’. ‘One of the grannies said that she felt very fortunate and blessed because she would have died without ever having this experience, and she always thought that game drives were only for rich people and today she felt like a VIP’, Vusi conclude. The TV series will only go on air on April 20 on DSTV channel 147.

Eradicating malaria in Hoedspruit area port to spray the inside of their buses as a prevention of malaria precaution. The Department of Health approached the HMEC for assistance in spraying in Ward 1 and Kampersrus due to lack of resources. Patrick Jordan, Chairman of the Hoedspruit Chamber of Commerce explained: ‘The reason they have requested assistance is that Ward 1 and Kampersrus fall into a low risk area according to the statistics available, making it a low priority for the Depart-
ment. We have now taken up that challenge and we are looking into raising money to do the spraying immediately, because of the predicted spike in malaria at the end of February and in early March. We ideally need to spray over eighty percent of all residences and businesses in this area before the end of this month”. ‘The government has assisted by giving us chemicals and we have approached some private companies in Hoedspruit to join forces with
us in our spray-for-living. They have given us greatly discounted rates to be able to roll this out in a quick and efficient manner through the rest of the designated areas,’ Patrick further explained. He concluded by saying ‘this is a two-step programme, and we are looking for a quick initial response and then for a long term solution for the next five years, as part of the scientific approach from the Department of Health to monitor, check and eradicate malaria entirely in this region’.
he told anecdotes from his early life and career; how he learnt to play the guitar at the age of 14 and through a chance meeting near his home in Johannesburg with a Zulu street musician, Charlie Mzila, embarked on a musical adventure like no other. Johnny and his guitar accompanied Charlie to all the places were the Zulu migrant workers met, and he entered their world. Johnny would go on to the formation of his bands Juluka and Savuka, and bring to the world a unique brand of music mixing Western melodies with Zulu musical structures. The atmosphere throughout the concert was electric, and
the most striking part was the audience’s overwhelming love for Johnny Clegg. It was an emotional moment when his son Jesse appeared on stage to duet on a song he had written, and as they continued with Great Heart the whole audience was either standing or dancing in the aisles. A few more numbers later, Johnny announced that he wanted to finish the concert with Scatterlings of Africa, the song which made him famous enough to be able to give up his day job as an anthropology lecturer at Wits University and become a full time musician. The audience would have none of that. After resilient
applause and ‘we want more’, Johnny Clegg and his band reappeared for the biggest and most emotional hit of them all: Asimbonanga. Then, on the two screens on either side of the stage, Nelson Mandela joined us in a video from his surprise appearance on stage in Frankfurt in 1999 as Johnny opened the show with Asimbonanga as a tribute to Madiba. All good things must come to an end, even this concert, but for everyone who was there that night it will live on as a cherished memory. Siyabonga - thank you Johnny for sharing your music with us and enrichening our lives so much!
SA legend says goodbye Lucky Rapitsi HOEDSPRUIT - Hoedspruit and surrounding areas have seen an increase in malaria cases recently, and tourists visiting the area are becoming concerned about the disease. Hoedspruit falls into what is termed a ‘low risk area’ with the risk increasing the further east one goes towards the Kruger National
Park. The Hoedspruit Malaria Eradication Committee (HMEC) consists of members of the Hoedspruit community who are actively working with the Health Department, Hoedspruit Chamber of Commerce and Hlokomela to eradicate malaria locally. On February 5, the HMEC visited Great North Trans-
Barry Peart & Kerstin Nyberg Peart HOEDSPRUIT / PE - Travelling from Hoedspruit to Port Elizabeth for a concert may seem a bit extreme, but this was no ordinary concert. Johnny Clegg was finishing the South African part of his Final Journey World Tour, so if we wanted to fulfil our decades-long ambition to see him live, this was our last chance. The Boardwalk Convention Centre in Port Elizabeth was filled to the last seat, and when Johnny appeared on stage the audience just went wild. Between the musical numbers

‘Hoedspruit, Campfire & HALO through my eyes’ Charlotte Møller HOEDSPRUIT - I am sure several people will agree with me, when I say; “There must be something in the water…”. My name is Charlotte Møller and I am from Denmark. This is now the second time I am back in Hoedspruit to finish my studies in biology at Campfire Academy, but it is no coincidence. I have travelled to quite a few places myself, but this is the only place that I have chosen to come back to a second time. Being in the bush and close to the animals is one of the things I enjoy the most, so being at Campfire Academy, based in the Greater Kruger National Park, is a massive bonus for me. The mountains are also a favourite place of
mine, going from the dry bush to a scenery that reminds me of a rainforest; swimming in the waterfalls and sleeping under the stars is how I spent a lot of my weekends. But these places are just a few gems out of many… In the beginning, I got introduced to HALO (Hoedspruit Animal Outreach), and I instantly enjoyed every second of volunteering with them. Throughout my whole stay I continuously volunteered, visited all the rural areas and most important, helped the dogs! Volunteering for a period of around six months gave me a unique opportunity to see up close all the amazing transformations that the community dogs went through. The work done by this organisation is outstanding!
But all the memories I have gathered here in Hoedspruit wouldn’t have been so joyful if it wasn’t for all the amazing friends I have made – it is the locals with their welcoming arms, but also the other internationals that, like me, found themselves drawn to this amazing town.
DAKTARI impacting children Amelia McKinlay HOEDSPRUIT - DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage works in the South African bush to educate local children about the environment and ignite their passion for wildlife. Each week, DAKTARI welcomes eight new students to their camp to attend lessons, do activities, and interact with the animals in their wildlife orphanage. When the children arrive at the DAKTARI camp on Monday, they fill in a general survey that works as a level indicator. The questions are based on crucial points of their education that they may or may not have learned in school or in life as of yet. The questionnaire is used as a progression sheet as they are asked to fill out the same questions when they leave on Friday. Through mapping the results of this survey it has become evident that the progression the children are making throughout the week has decreased over the last three years (2015-2017). Although they are learning the same content as the previous years, the children posses more knowledge on these topics when they arrive. This is particularly the case with their understanding of environmental awareness. This demonstrates, that after over 12 years of working in this area, the impact DAKTARI is having on the community is becoming increasingly visible. As more children come to DAKTARI, they spread their knowledge to their family and friends making them aware of certain environmental issues. DAKTARI has now reached over 4000 children and each child that attends becomes an important ambassador to spread their knowledge into the nearby villages. DAKTARI also works in the community and the twiceweekly Eco Clubs the children attend at the local schools help them expand their knowledge after they have been to DAKTARI. Moreover, children that have never been to
DAKTARI can also attend to learn about the environment. The DAKTARI team regularly meet with the teachers and headmasters of the local schools and the schools have reported significant improve-
ments in the students who have attended DAKTARI. This includes increased concentration in the classroom, more confidence to speak up in class, an increase in politeness and self-esteem and a
higher pass rate at the end of the year. It is encouraging to see that locally based projects are having a lasting positive impact on the surrounding communities.

The food supplies our boarding house, is shared amongst the school community and enjoyed by the students with plans for pumpkin fritter making and popcorn movie nights. The nursery is designed to combat the big issue of water wastage, so we only water in the early morning or late at night to avoid any mid-day sun evaporation. We have also learnt about mulching and use thatching grass and leaves around the plants to retain as much water as possible. From the Pre-school to the college, all learners at Southern Cross have been involved in this exciting project and we have all learnt so much about healthy and sustainable living. Time spent getting our hands dirty in the nursery is always exciting, inspiring and lots of fun!

Create an invisible shield around your property HOEDSPRUIT - With the increase in crime over recent years, property and business owners are struggling to stay one step ahead of the criminals when it comes to protecting themselves and their assets. Sandfire Defence has just launched a new product on the South African market that can assist in the early warning of breeches in perimeter security. Underground seismic sensors are the latest in military grade technology and are used along the Israeli and Egyptian borders, as well as by US Border Patrol. The system is used to protect critical infrastructure such as prisons abroad, and now Sandfire Defence is pleased to be able to offer this innovative product to the South African security industry. How does it work? UGS or unattended ground sensors are buried approximately 50 cm below the surface and the UGS learns the environment by monitoring the normal ground vibrations. When the sensor detects an abnormal ground vibration it sends a signal to the receiver which can be linked to an alarm panel or other device depend-
ing on the application. Each sensor has an average coverage of approx. 100m2. The sensors run on batteries which last between 8 to 19 months, depending on the usage. With seven levels of sensitivity the sensors can be adjusted to suit the environment. They are designed not to trigger for animals weighing less than 30kg and can be used in gardens
with small to medium sized pets. The product is fully imported and of premium quality, it has a proven track record and is now available on order from Sandfire Defence, a division of Sandstream Investments Pty Ltd. For more information or for a quote please contact Alon on alon@sandtream.co.za or visit www.sandfire.co.za

Die afgelope Saterdag, 3 Februarie was daar weer opgewondenheid op en langs die atletiekbaan toe Laerskool Drakesig hul jaarlike Prestige atletiekbyeenkoms aangebied het. It was a pleasure to welcome the athletes from Fauna Park, Burgersfort, Mariepskop, Ohrigstad, Phalaborwa, Steelpoort, Southern Cross and Meridian College. Ons is baie trots op die atle-
tiekspan wat hul beste gelewer het en Laerskool Drakensig se naam hoog gehou het. Die Drakie ‘mascot’ het atlete kom ondersteun en aangemoedig om hul beste te doen. Congratulation to Thapelo Malatji who was the Senior Victrix Ludorum and Best Trek athlete of the day. We are very proud of you. #riepietrots
