Ranger survives elephant attack Lucky Rapitsi

TIMBAVATI - On February 1, Protrack ranger Jacobus Breedt, known as Vaatjie to his team members, was gored by an elephant on the Avoca road, a public road within the Greater Kruger National Park which services Thornybush, Sandringham and Timbavati Game Reserves. ‘Vaatjie and his tracking partner were heading back to the Avoca boom gate after completing a fence check when they spotted a herd of elephants ahead of them’ Protrack General Manager Shane Tintinger explained. Shane said that the pair had turned back with the intention to circle around the herd and return to the boom gate to do their regular patrol when a few elephants approached them from behind. The elephants came towards them causing the pair to split up, with one elephant chasing Vaatjie’s partner and some of the other elephants going after Vaatjie. Shane said that the elephant bulldozed him about ten metres along the ground and pinned him against the fork of a small tree where he sustained multiple injuries.

His injuries included a broken ankle and also a broken jaw, which was the most significant injury to his face, while his throat and cheek were lacerated and his vocal chords and trachea severed. Jacobus was rushed to Tzaneen Mediclinic for treatment and was then transferred to Johannesburg Milpark Hospital. The decision to transfer him was made by his family,

so that he could be closer to them and receive more emotional support during his recovery. On February 20, K2C News contacted his family and spoke to Annelie Jordaan, his mother. According to Annelie, more injuries had been diagnosed on Vaatjie’s arrival at Milpark, included a collapsed left lung which is still being treated, and she added that he had had operations to

fix his ankle and facial fractures. Annelie said that Vaatjie was doing well given the circumstances, but was still in ICU and is expected to remain there for another two to three weeks. ‘Damage to his throat could not be assessed as it is still too swollen, and it is still a long road ahead to full recovery’ his mother concluded.

Funding success

Brass Brassett BALULE - Bob Bob is a worker at Campfire Academy on Balule Nature Reserve. At 48, he is one of the most hard-working, diligent people around, which made the discovery that his eye sight was so poor that he could register as legally blind all the more shocking. To find out what was wrong with Bob Bob’s sight, he was taken to see Dr Thompson, an eye specialist in Tzaneen. There he was diagnosed with corneal scarring in both eyes and his vision was determined as 2% in his left eye, while he could see up to about 25m with his right eye. Dr Thompson said this condition could have been cleared when it began with simple eye drops. Although Bobby sought help for his eyes over 25 years ago, eye drops were not available to him. The only hope now for Bob Bob was corneal transplants, but these are neither cheap nor is the success guaranteed. But who could just stand by and watch a man go blind without trying to help? Dr Thompson very kindly charged half his normal fee for the consultation, which raised the possibility that if he could reduce his fee then there was a chance to raise the rest of the money through crowd funding. The crowd funding was started in September 2017

to try and raise R77 000 for one corneal transplant and the additional costs involved. It was daunting to think that people might contribute to a fundraiser for such a massive amount of money! Once half the sum was there, people would be more likely to donate as they could see that the total was achievable, and that their money would make a difference. Running a student destination goes hand-in-hand with social media, and soon students and ex-students from all over the world were donating - and then their friends - and then their friends’ friends. This week, the total was reached, in fact overreached: R79 973.80. I really am overwhelmed, humbled and at a loss for words. A simple Thank You does not seem enough to cover it. To all of you who donated, to all of you who shared the fund-raising posts: you rock my overwhelmed world. You are compassionate, generous and just all-round decent human beings. You guys are Ubuntu: a person is a person through other people - I am because of you. I live by the saying, ‘Don’t ask, Don’t get’. If you need help, if you need something, don’t ever be shy of asking. The worst that could happen is that someone may say ‘no’, but maybe, just maybe, kindness and humanity may surprise you.

HOEDSPRUIT / PTA - So often there is a pivotal moment in our lives, and this was the shared experience of a group of parents and therapists who attended a seminar presented by The Family Hope Center (FHC). The seminar was presented in Pretoria by an international team of doctors and therapists devoted to teaching and helping parents understand the neuro-developmental stages of their children and improve their children’s outcome. I felt humbled as I sat amongst parents whom I consider to be modern-day heroes. Their children all face varying challenges, from mild to severe: autism, ADD, ADHD, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, paralysis, blindness, holoprosencephaly and dyslexia (to mention only a few) The Family Hope Center has given back hope to thousands of families. It was founded by Matthew and Carol Neuwell, who teach that the problems are caused by injuries to very specific parts of the brain. With proper therapy, training, and nutrition, the brain can be healed and restored. They have travelled around the world to teach and assist families and professionals in many other countries. A group of over 50 parents and practitioners attended the three-day intensive training entitled ‘How to Help Your Child with Special Needs’, with an optional two-day appointment for an individual evaluation of your child. It was a delight to see familiar faces from Hoedspruit, parents seeking help for their children. Thanks go to Hannes Viljoen, who brought the team from the USA to South Africa. Hannes is a South African father, now living in the USA, who was seeking help for his children, and who wished to share with other parents the successes he found through FHC. Thank you to Heidi Lee Smith, Nina van Eeden, and Veronica Nel for being relentless in their fundraising. The people of Hoedspruit have the biggest hearts, and a big thank you to those who contributed to the ‘Pay Hope Forward’ fund. For the duration of the course, I was privileged to stay

DEAT applauds Environmental Monitors Lucky Rapitsi

HOEDSPRUIT - The department of Environment Affairs (DEA) has praised a group of Environmental Monitors (EMs) from Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region, also

known as Maeba (Doves), for their work in the Biosphere area. Their programme is geared towards fighting the scourge of rhino poaching as well as a host of other environmental issues in the Greater Kruger area.

On 20 February 2018 the Department of Environmental Affairs showcased the work of the EM’s to a group of media houses around Limpopo, including a crew from the SABC. The media houses visited four sites where they had

the opportunity to interview the EMs about their work and environmental engagements. Recently the minister of Environmental Affairs Dr Edna Molewa has commended and praised the EMs, saying they continue to play an instrumental role in fighting the scourge of rhino poaching. With at least 1620 young South Africans participating in the Environmental Monitors programme across the country, the initiative aims to increase conservation capacity within the South African National Parks (SANParks), and provincial and private nature reserves, through patrols, biodiversity monitoring and environmental education and awareness within the affected communities. They operate throughout South Africa in 32 host institutions which include seven public entities and 25 private nature reserves, with SANParks’ Biodiversity Social Projects (BSP) as the implementing agent.

Hlokomela Employee of the Year 2017

Desiré Wright

HOEDSPRUIT - Congratulations to Fortunate Khumalo for being the 2017 Hlokomela Employee of the Year! This lady excelled in her position in the Finance Department last year and consistently delivered high quality work. Besides exceeding expectations in the work environment, Fortunate also became a mother for the first time. Her healthy baby boy is now 8 months old. ‘I am extremely honoured and I am earnestly grateful for the recognition I have received for my work’ says Fortunate. ‘I have faced several challenges on my

way here, but each one of them has only strengthened me and made me the person I am today; a professional who knows exactly what she wants; someone who sets her eyes on a goal and does not lose sight of it. Achieving this would not have been possible without the inspiration I have received from my seniors, my colleagues and family for whom I have the deepest respect, and from whom I have derived the strength to challenge myself and perform better at each stage. I sincerely thank each one of you for helping me reach a stage where I can proudly hold up this award as a mark of my achievement’.

Motswari Game Lodge will be sponsoring a weekend away for the employee of the year!
