Zelda de Keijzer HOEDSPRUIT - This year marks the 20th anniversary of The Bateleurs - Africa’s first private flight support programme for conservation. It is only fitting that this milestone coincides with the organisation’s relocation to

Hoedspruit, a hub of conservation activities in South Africa, where they will continue their work in the air to protect life on earth. The Bateleurs was founded in 1998 by Nora Kreher, who had a passion for wildlife and nature conservation. She died in 2008 at the age of 77, leaving

her mark on Southern Africa’s wild life and environmental conservation. The late conservationist and patron of The Bateleurs, Dr Ian Player described her as ‘one of the really great heroines in the conservation struggle in SA. She was a woman of indomitable courage, highly intuitive and

deeply motivated to save the little wilderness left in SA.’ The Bateleurs is a Non Profit Company (NPC), with over 250 volunteer pilots and aircraft. It provides its beneficiaries and the public with an aerial perspective of the environment and has coordinated several,..cont on page3....

Rotary delivering wheelchairs to those in need Lovelle Henderson HOEDSPRUIT - ‘The great protector of those less advantaged persons, acts in weird and wonderful ways’, says Rotarian Christine du Preez. Rotary Hoedspruit recently received a consignment of wheelchairs from overseas Rotarians, delivered to Middleburg Rotary, with no possible way of getting them to Hoedspruit when out of the blue a Samaritan arrived on

our doorstep. Stinus Breedt, a friend of Rotary, upon hearing of their plight immediately and generously offered Christine and Wynand de Bruyn, also a Hoedspruit Rotarian, the use of his truck and workers to load the vehicle which arrived in Hoedspruit on Monday. One of the astonishing plusses of having a Rotary Club in your area is their huge ability to rally the whole community around. Rotary is getting the

Hoedspruit public involved in their mission to deliver as many wheelchairs as they can obtain to those in need.

ACORNHOEK - Little Roxanne Shubane (4) who lives in Acornhoek has cerebral palsy (CP). Kgatetso Lovejoy Sadiq, her mother, noticed that something was not quite as it should be with Roxanne’s development when the baby was about 4 months old. “Her neck was very floppy” says Lovejoy. Roxanne was taken for tests and diagnosed with CP at the rehabilitation center at Tintswalo Hospital. ‘Roxanne is like a breath of fresh air whenever she visits Hlokomela’, which is run by Christine du Preez. ‘Her friendly, vibrant smile makes us all love her even more every time we see her.’ observe the staff of Hlokomela, which is the family’s care center of preference. As the saying goes: ‘children grow with love, and the same was true for Roxanne’ - until she got too heavy for her mom to carry her on her back anymore. Roxanne needed a wheelchair so Middelburg Rotary Club and Hoedspruit Rotary Club generously donated a pink and black coloured wheelchair to this beautiful little girl. ‘This has made my life so much easier, as my little girl is growing so fast’ says Lovejoy. Roxanne can now sit comfortably and well postured in her new wheelchair. The smile on her and her mommy’s faces was priceless.

There is no charge to beneficiaries for the missions flown by The Bateleurs. Missions are made possible through the philanthropy of our volunteer pilot members and the free use of their aircraft and time, which constitutes around 70% of the ‘value’ of The Bateleurs. The organisation relies solely

on funding to cover their operational costs that includes ad hoc payments to volunteer pilots for fuel and other mission-related expenses. Nature writer James Clarke once described the Bateleurs as ‘an environmental air force which has had profound effect on conservation tactics in southern Africa.’ Missions flown have varied from exposing illegal activities, monitoring proposed developments (mining, toll roads, housing); tracking animals with telemetry equipment; conducting surveys of animal populations (such as 14 microlights counting elephants in the Maputo Elephant reserve); identifying Wattled Crane nests and counting eggs (for reclamation and artificial incubation of the second egg); transporting endangered wildlife between conservation areas to documenting vulnerable wetlands adjacent to urban sprawl. Volunteer pilots frequently fly rhino anti-poaching patrols and provide support for crime scene investigators in the Kruger National Park. The list of missions goes on, with well over 600 missions flown to date, many of which involved several aircraft and many days spent in the air. ‘If ever there was an eagle that symbolises complete mastery of the sky, it’s the bateleur.

In his speech, Minister of Tourism Derek Hanekom said ‘there is huge potential in tourism’ quoting from what the President of South Africa Cyrill Ramaphosa said during the state of the nation address. The Minister applauded the work done by tourist guides as destination representatives, as it contributes to the success and sustainability of the industry. He emphasised that guides must commit to passion, pride

The minister further said ‘that tourist guides are critical to the success and sustainability of the industry, and that the industry’s success ride on the coat-tails of the memorable experiences shaped by tourist guides as they usher local and international visitors through our beautiful country’. ‘Tourism has the potential to double the number of jobs it creates in the economy’, he added. ‘To this end, we have invested in capacity building programmes at our World Heritage Sites to up-skill tourist guides in customer care, interpretation and other areas as well as to train new entrants into the field of adventure and

Hoedspruit women care for vulnerable children

Lovelle Henderson HOEDSPRUIT - A group of committed women from Hoedspruit Rotary has become involved in a new project at the Ekuruleni (Place of Peace) centre for orphans and vulnerable children in Tintswalo village. The centre caters for 226 children between the ages of five and eighteen, who are orphans and considered vulnerable. The children attend local schools during the morning and go to the centre for lunch and spend their afternoons and weekends there. Sadly only fifty of the children benefit from Government funding. At the request of the centre management, a sewing skills outreach project has been started by Rotarians and volunteers to develop sewing skills for the carers, so they in turn can pass these skills on to the children, ultimately enabling them to gain simple life skills such as sewing on buttons and turning up hems. Rotary has been able to donate some sewing machines, fabric and essential equipment and the plan is now for the group

Trail Run Series – a first for the Hoed Heidi Lee Smith

HOEDSPRUIT – Exciting times lie ahead for fitness fiends, as Lowveld Trail Running launches the first Pam Golding Wildlife Estate Trail Run Series in Hoedspruit. Michael Dickerson, who also brought the Parkrun to Hoedspruit, together with Andrew Booth of KZN Trail Running are the brains behind the series. The series will comprise of four trail runs to be held on Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, Zandspruit Bush & Aero Estate, Blyde Wildlife Estate and Ndlovumzi Nature Reserve. Each event will have three distances available 5km, 10km and approximately 20km. Participants can enter the full series or each individual event where they can enjoy the unique experience of running or walking with wildlife on these exclusive estates. The series is primarily focused on the community and has been geared to bring trail running to the people and get the people to the trails. This has all been made possible by the commitment of Pam Golding Properties Hoedspruit, the title sponsors, and the open arms of the estates that are willing to share their beautiful properties.

Participants are able to give back, just by entering, as with each event, a portion of the entrance fees will go towards a worthwhile cause. The estates have earmarked the funds to go towards either a conservation fund or a school in need. At each event there will also be a ‘Shoe Box’ which will be used to collect donated shoes from runners. These shoes will be donated to runners from the community who are not able to purchase their own. Lowveld Trail Running has made a facility available, where individuals or companies, are able to sponsor participants entrance fees from pre-selected schools. Often these runners, no matter how talented they are, have never had the opportunity to take part in these type of events before. This series offers a double edged sword, in not only getting these children to participate, but also getting them into the wild. ‘Being community focused we want the whole family to come and join in the fun. With that in mind we welcome runners, joggers, walkers and people of all ages and abilities. Even parents with little ones who do not have baby sitters can take advantage of the KidZone’s that will be made available. Parents can

leave their toddlers (over two years old) with qualified caregivers allowing parents peace of mind whilst they enjoy the trails. We really look forward to hosting visitors and locals

to this exciting series where you will get to experience some really unique trails,’ says Michael Dickerson of Lowveld Trail Running. Save these dates: Hoedspruit
