Zero tolerance stance against illegal immigrants Lucky Rapitsi HOEDSPRUIT - Recent statistics indicate that as many as five million immigrants have moved to South Africa in the last five to ten years. Hoedspruit has also seen a remarkable increase in the numbers of illegal immigrants from Mozambique, Zimbabwe and other African countries. On April 3, 2018 the Hoedspruit Farmwatch handed over a

memorandum of agreement between Hoedspruit Farmwatch, Hoedspruit SAPS and the Department of Home Affairs Inspectorate Limpopo offices. The document notes that both SAPS and Hoedspruit Farmwatch have established a direct correlation between increased crime in the area and the increased level of illegal immigrants. The Immigration Acts state that no person may employ an illegal foreigner. Section 49 (3)

of the Immigration Act also provides that anyone who knowingly employs an illegal foreigner is in violation of the Act, and shall be guilty of an offence and liable to a fine or period of imprisonment not exceeding one year for a first offence. Similarly Section 42 also states that no person shall aid or abet an illegal immigrant in any way, this also includes renting or offering of accommodation, or harbouring an illegal in any way, and as such may also be liable for a fine or period of imprisonment. The main objective of the memorandum is to initiate a Zero Tolerance stance against illegal immigrants in the region, whether on farms or in the town. The farm watchers state that this will also create more job opportunities for local residents and lessen opportunistic crime occurring during and post high immigrants season. Hoedspruit SAPS and the Department of Home Affairs Inspectorate Limpopo office together with the Farmwatch will collaborate and take action to educate locals and create public

An illegal immigrant is anyone who is in the country illegally, without the correct documentation. There is no accountability or means of tracking, monitoring or controlling illegals. Immigrants who have come here LEGALLY, with a record of their names, details, fingerprints etc. lodged with the Department of Home Affairs, are welcome. It is very important NOT to see this as a xenophobic action to get rid of foreigners, but only to get rid of the illegal individuals in the community who have no accountability here, and are able to (and often do) commit crime with impunity. awareness in favour of the Zero Tolerance stance against illegal immigrants. Together with SAPS, Farmwatch will follow up regularly on information received as regards the employment of illegal immigrants in local work forces. Illegal immigrants will be arrested and employers will be heavily fined.

Hoedspruit SAPS Station Commander Bila Sesinyana, immigration control officer Mboweni Themba and Lafras Tremper from Hoedspruit Farmwatch signed the memorandum of agreement to take action against illegal immigration in Hoedspruit town and the surrounding regions.

Appalling road conditions in the Lowveld: A threat to economic development and jobs width of it; in places the sides of the road have been eaten away, creating large cavities which you may be forced to drive into if there are cars in the opposite direction. The worst part of it is that this is the route from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit recommended by Google maps: what an introduction to our area for first time visitors! I (and my car) survived unscathed, and at least I knew not to bring our visitors back along that route. To illustrate just how bad the potholes are on the R36, owner of Lydenrust Guest

Farm, Alison Botha, published photos on Facebook of volunteer teacher Rosie Morrison taking a bath in one of the potholes. Rosie was armed with a shower cap, book, glass of wine, and shampoo. The guest farm is situated just off the R36, near the Machadodorp end, and is badly affected by the condition of the road. What makes this story even more affecting is that this photo, of the same road which I experienced a few weeks ago, was taken in 2014! According to Oupa Pilane, Mpumalanga’s tourism sector

Kerstin Nyberg Peart LOWVELD - The dire state of some of the roads in Mpumalanga has been a problem for a long time. Oupa Pilane, President of the Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism (KLCBT), is pleading with the Mpumalanga Provincial Government to take tourism seriously and to start by fixing the roads, especially on the Panorama Route which is the jewel of tourism in the province. The Panorama Route is one of the most popular tourist

routes in Mpumalanga, and the establishments along the route provide employment to thousands of young people in the area. The route has great potential for further development, creating much needed employment in the area, but this will come to nothing if the state of the roads frightens away the tourists. Who wants to risk damage to their cars’ tyres or suspension? Oupa Pilane says that the KLCBT has approached the provincial government numerous times, but their requests have fallen on deaf

ears. He adds that they continue to receive negative feedback from visitors – both domestic and international about the conditions of the roads. I had the misfortune to experience just how bad some of the roads are when driving from Hoedspruit to O.R.Tambo to meet visitors from the UK. After Lydenburg, I continued on the R36 down to the Schoemanskloof road rather than turn right towards Dullstroom. The road is practically impassable due to deep potholes covering the

has welcomed the call by the President of South Africa to join hands and work together to reduce the level of unemployment in Mpumalanga. The Panorama Route has the potential to create even more desperately needed jobs, but the infrastructure has to be addressed first. ‘We cannot do this alone and therefore urgently request the Mpumalanga Provincial Government to step up and partner with us to create a shared vision that will see our province grow and flourish,’ Pilane concludes.

Friends reunion... Nicola Coady

HOEDSPRUIT | IRELAND – When I left Hoedspruit, I was sad to leave my friends, including Anna Mussi. We met through horses and as she is younger, fitter and crazier than I, our friendship improved my riding. Anna visits the UK yearly, and also comes to us in Ireland, where we have rented a large house. I would love it if more of my Hoedspruit friends would visit! My first seasonal ‘Fun Ride’ was in October and immediately I wanted to tell Anna all about it. I have never been so scared or had so much fun on a horse! The ride was at Lismore Castle, a magical setting with gorgeous stone banks and walls. Over 200 riders did more than 80 jumps during the three-hour ride. It was crazy - I have NEVER seen so many people fall off - and I’ve been to rodeos. I could tell we were approaching a jump when I saw ponies running free. As we got closer I saw the ponies’ riders carpeting the ground around the jump.

When Anna heard about it, she couldn’t wait to join in. Her next UK visit was planned for the spring, and when we heard about the St. Patrick’s Day Fun Ride we made a plan. Anna suggested dressing the horses up. I wasn’t keen as I imagined falling off, in front of 200 people while dressed like an idiot, but Anna convinced me. Despite the wettest winter in 300 years we remained optimistic. Anna arrived on Thursday the 15th. She was meeting her horse on Friday and then the Fun Ride was on Saturday. Unfortunately, it continued raining but Anna was an awesome guest, she borrowed extra layers, slapped a smile on and joined me dog walking. I walk along the Atlantic Ocean in the mornings and pick up garbage, and it makes me feel closer to my friends on the other side of the Atlantic doing the same. Even in the rain Anna helped. She only skipped one walk, and honestly, I also wanted to skip walking in the sideways rain.

On Friday we learned that the Fun Ride was cancelled, but my Irish friends got together to save Anna’s holiday. On St Patrick’s Day we met Robert, who trailed his horse to us so we could ride on the beach, and Winnie found us an allweather cross-country course for Sunday. We celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in a pub watching Ireland’s Rugby grand slam and feeling that Anna’s holiday was saved – until we saw the snow outside! We hoped it would disappear overnight, but in the morning it was snowing more heavily. I phoned Winnie, expecting the worst, but she said we were going. Anna borrowed more layers and we put Vaseline inside the horses’ hooves to stop snow from building up (it works). I was nervous but it really was an allweather course, and Anna was able to cross “riding in snow” off her bucket list (it was never on mine). Now I want her come back in the autumn to do a proper fun ride and to tell me where she hid all my pots when she cleaned-up.

Let’s stop chasing our tourists away

of their trip.

Land Grabs

Another example of South Africa providing fodder for the sensationalist world media is on the topic of land reform. In the eyes of the world, we are not engaged in a necessary land reform debate. We are engaged in a land grabbing crisis, and heading down the same path as Zimbabwe.

Left: Nicola Coady behind and Anna Mussi in front, riding in the snow, a stark contrast to what they were previously used to as horse riding buddies !

Below: Scruffy, the luckiest rescue dog ever, now living like a celebrity in Ireland!

This is a crisis of confidence. Onne Vegter Daily Tourism Update SOUTH AFRICA - The last couple of months have been rather stormy for tourism in South Africa. On top of a stronger rand, which makes South Africa much more expensive for foreign tourists compared to a year ago, tourists have been very concerned about the water crisis in Cape Town and the Listeriosis outbreak. More recently, the debate about land reform and numerous incidents of illegal land grabs have hit the headlines. And for the umpteenth time, service delivery protests have blocked access roads to the Kruger National Park, disrupting people’s travel plans and scaring tourists away from our beautiful country. Tourism supports thousands of jobs and is one of the few

growing sectors of our struggling economy. If we’re serious about promoting tourism, we need to stop scoring own goals and address the issues that are chasing tourists away. Let’s look at three examples.

Day Zero The Day Zero message that helped Cape Town achieve the necessary water savings to finally avoid Day Zero, initially had the unintended consequence of scaring tourists away. The headlines abroad painted a picture of dry dams, people lining up for water rations, and a city in crisis with no water. Scaring the citizens into saving water seems to have worked, but it came at a price. The headlines abroad caused many tourists to cancel their bookings, or at least cancel the Cape Town portion

Protests and Road Blocks

Another common and very destructive example of an own goal that destroys our reputation as a tourist-friendly country, is when key tourist roads are blocked due to protest action. In South Africa, everyone has the right to peaceful protest. But nobody has the right to violent protest that infringes on the rights of others. Service delivery protests are common in South Africa, and usually do not impact tourism much. But when the main access roads to O R Tambo airport or to the Kruger National Park are regularly blocked by protestors, the authorities need to step in quickly and deal with it firmly. Tourists pay thousands of rands to come to South Africa and visit the Kruger National Park or Sabi Sand Game Reserve. If the road is blocked and tourists cannot get to their destination, or are turned around and instructed to take a detour, nothing good can come from that. If their itinerary is disrupted, they will go home and never come back to SA, and warn others never to come to SA The fear of crime probably scares away the most tourists. South Africa has a reputation as an unsafe country where you run a high risk of getting mugged, robbed, or hijacked. Our failure to address our high crime rate is costing us many thousands of jobs in the tourism sector. The fact that we are still seeing increased arrivals from certain markets bears testimony to the fantastic destination that South Africa is, and the resilience of our industry to march ahead in spite of all these challenges. I tip my hat to you all.

What’s a Wothamanga? A Malawian evening filled with Hoedspruit fun! Lucky Rapitsi

MESA is a fresh approach embracing change to contests in this age. Now everybody who meets the requirements can apply easily and begin campaigning effectively. According to Renuka Kalidin, MESA co-founder and visionary, the main objective of this initiative is to bring about a revolutionary change in the mind-sets of our young women. MESA is looking for an eagle who will not only represent South Africa, but who will do great things in our country. Former Miss Mega City Acornhoek 2016-2017 and Lil Miss-Glam modelling academy founder, Vonani Shikwambana from Nkoawankova near Tzaneen has always aimed high in showing off the beauty of Limpopo and taking the province to another level in this field. Vonani has entered Miss Eagle South Africa 2018, with the hope of empowering young women to feel comfortable with themselves. ‘It is not about the colour of your skin or how you look, I want to empower all women to know that they are beautiful just the way they are, they don’t need to change a thing in them, beauty is not everything but beauty with brilliance and purpose is everything’ Vonani says. She is also the founder of Greener Heart Development Project which has been running for just over a year. This is a project that aims to teach the public about the importance of the earth we live on and the value of having trees and plants in our areas. The public can help Vonani bring the crown home by simply voting for her, sms Vonani to 35334.

The goal of the evening is to raise funds towards the various projects the marathoners will be working on during their seven day stay in Malawi in May this year. Tom and Hanlie van der Meulen, Belinda Barkas, Cameron and Amber Jacobs, and Lize Dumon will be pitching their tents in the athletes’ village at Mangochi whilst each day visiting and working hands-on at various charity projects. ‘The funds will go directly towards the projects. We have all paid for our own packages to participate in the marathon. One of the projects we are fundraising for, which really gripped my heart, is the provision of bicycle-ambulances,’ says Lize Dumon. ‘We don’t

realise the lack of infrastructure existing in places like this. These people live in such remote areas and are so poor that providing them with a normal bicycle pulling a cart on which a patient can be laid and cycled to the nearest town is a huge help to them! Can you imagine that?’ Other projects the marathoners will be working on include pre-school feeding schemes, installing energy-efficient stoves, providing vocational skills training and starting an initiative to provide emergency transport for those in critical medical need. ‘I think the idea of harvesting the love of running to positively impact a community is brilliant and I have already raised the possibility with the Impact team of perhaps bringing it to our part of the world,’ adds a passionate Lize.

Join Tom and Hanlie van der Meulen, Belinda Barkas, Cameron and Amber Jacobs, and Lize Dumon on 14 April, 16:30 at Blue Mountain Restaurant. Buffing up the herd Anaële Madic HOEDSPRUIT - DAKTARI recently welcomed Chimoya, a baby buffalo, whose mother rejected her after being injured

in the wild. Our neighbour, a local farmer, asked us to look after this chubby baby and we are all excited about her! Chimoya has now settled very well into her new enclo-

sure with Tango who is very happy to have a new friend. Tango is a baby sable antelope brought to DAKTARI from a nearby farm at the beginning of March. DAKTARI took in Tango when he was only two days old as his mother, probably too old, could not produce enough milk to feed him. The DAKTARI volunteers who come from all over the word are enjoying the two new babies! They are doing an amazing job in providing food and care for them, between teaching two lessons to the local children. It is also a great opportunity for these kids to admire a baby big 5 as they do not get this chance very often if ever.

JUMBO ADS ARE affordable and effective

RIEPIE WENNERS. Agrochem, die wenspan by Laerskool Mariepskop se gholfdag.

Lekkerste lekker: die span van Pips het die gholfdag die meeste geniet.

NAASWENNERS. Die naaswenners by Riepies se gholfdag, Bermacon.

Die span van Blydevallei/Bavaria/Clemengold was gekies as die bes geklede span van die dag.
