‘Oh to be an ass in Hoedspruit’
HOEDSPRUIT – All too often the quirkiness of the Hoed sticks its neck out and someone captures the moment on camera. This classic image is no exception to that Hoedspruit / Lowveld rule. When a donkey is allowed at the ‘Thirsty Giraffe Pub’, but no dogs are – it’s just too much for most people to fathom! All of us would agree: this is one of those ‘only in Hoedspruit’ moments. ‘I just love it that the donkey looks so smug next to the ‘no dogs’ sign!’ said photographer Harriet Nimmo.

K2C BR present new documentary Lucky Rapitsi
CAPE TOWN - ‘CARE TAKERS’ is a documentary film project about our rich natural heritage, and the dedicated people who care for it. In the face of overwhelming biodiversity loss, habitat degradation, and human induced climate change, there is a pressing need for clear calls to effective action. These films are intended to educate, advocate and inspire people to become active parts of the solution. The Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region K2C BR environmental monitors (Ems), in partnership with STEPS &

CARE TAKERS, have made a documentary called ‘Our Rhino’ that will be used for screenings within our local communities, to facilitate conversation around the issues of rhino poaching and to facilitate social change. CARE TAKERS have been awarded lottery money to make short films on biodiversity and environmentally orientated issues. STEPS has also partnered with six African countries where they have trained young peo-
ple on how to make their own documentaries and using film as a tool to bring about social change, focussing on social issues such as HIV, ritual killings of people living with albinism, and sexuality and gender based issues. The first conference, which was attended by young activists from eight countries, took place on 9 April in Cape Town. Knowledge was exchanged and K2C BR films shared. Two representatives from K2C BR, Vusi
Tshabalala and Reshoketswe Mafogo, proudly represented South Africa. Organisations from Zambia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Botswana, Germany, and Malawi attended the valuable meeting of African countries. Vusi said that the K2C BR presented at the conference their new documentary called ‘Our Sand Following Our Rhino’, about the unsustainable and unregulated harvesting of sand for construction purposes.

Gloria explains that in 2012, the centre received a donation from Hoedspruit Air Force Base AFB of forty bags of cement to start building a proper day care centre. ‘In 2014 we received twenty seven bags of cement and in 2017 a hundred bags from AFB Hoedspruit to further build onto our day care centre’ Gloria says. In 2017 Mpala Safari Lodge came on board to assist with the construction of a proper

On 11 April 2018 Mmakadi day care centre hosted a fundraiser to raise funds so that they can build a little kitchen for their centre. No end in sight What’s a Wothamanga? for road issues Its a RUNNER!!!
Kerstin Nyberg Peart HOEDSPRUIT - The previous issue of K2C News featured an article about the state of the roads in Mpumalanga province, including some of the most popular tourist routes. An article on the same topic was front page news in the Lowvelder recently, and the media exposure seems to have prompted the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport (DPWRT) to respond to the claims made by the President of Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism (KLCBT), Oupa Pilane. DPWRT says that they realise the importance of tourism as a key economic driver, and the province has invested in roads leading to tourism infrastructure. According to KLCBT, this is the first time ever that there has been an acknowledgement from the DPWRT that tourism is a key economic driver in the province. The R36 between Bambi and Mashishing received attention for its very poor state, but the department claims that Phase 1 of its reconstruction has already been completed, Phase 2 is at an advanced stage, whilst Phase 3 is planned to have started by the 2020/21financial year. KLCBT is critical of this; given the state of the road, ‘this is not soon enough’ says Oupa. DPWRT lists other roads which will be repaired, but the response from KLCBT is ‘too little, too late’: for example, the R536 between Sabie and Hazyview needs much more than the light rehabilitation the department is planning. The department
Wendy Blair, Amber Jacobs, Belinda Barkas and Lize Dumon at the event
claims to have invested over R1 million on the R537 between White River and Sabie, but according to KLCBT the quality of the repairs is so poor that the road is in a worse condition than before they were done. The list goes on. The department has an Annual Maintenance Programme which includes both routine and major maintenance activities, but according to KLCBT this maintenance is simply not being done. The department also claims that the province has begun a series of engagements with tourism chambers in the province to ensure that government planning takes into consideration their priorities. KLCBT insists that they have been driving this agenda, ‘trying for many months to schedule meetings with DPWRT to address the roads crisis, simply to be fobbed off at every occasion’; when they finally secured a meeting ‘nobody from the relevant departments attended,’ they say. The agenda that KLCBT is trying to get onto the table is that the conditions of the tourism (and other) roads are so bad that they face a crisis situation. DPWRT blames limited resources, but this cuts no ice with KLCBT. They point out that the first response to criticism about the road network is always about a lack of resources; but they have been led to believe that many road-related contracts are issued at inflated prices, that no quality checks are done on the contracted work, and that expensive outsourced systems do not deliver the required outcomes. Kruger2Canyon will continue to follow this story as it unfolds.
Lize Dumon HOEDSPRUIT - After the ‘What’s a Wothamanga’ evening last Saturday, there are a few things that I need to share with Hoedspruit: If you have never attended one of Michel Girardin’s quiz events, you had better make sure you NEVER miss one again! This man is a genius, and he had 150 Hoedspruiters scratching their heads, totally engaged in trying to win the Golden Hoedspruit Barbies. He was brilliant in using his questions to shine light on great Hoedspruit initiatives, stretching our brains and at the same time having us laugh and have the best time ever. When we advertised our event there were quite a few people who said they didn’t know that Tracy den Dunnen sings….let me tell you…we all now know that this lady SINGS – she blew us away with her amazing voice and performance. Mark Blair and Patrick Green once again totally mesmerised us with their music. Mark’s interpretation of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ gave us all goose bumps! Thank you to all of them! Furthermore we would like to thank Spar for sponsoring gifts for our quiz winners, as well as taking a table to participate in the quiz, and to Buco who also took a table.
Thanks also to Andre Nel from Blue Mountain Restaurant for the excellent Malawian cuisine and beautiful venue, and also taking a table to participate in the quiz. Congratulations to Tom van der Meulen’s table who won the quiz, and Mark Blair’s table who came second. After receiving their Hoedspruit Barbie Oscars, all dressed Malawian style, the dolls were presented to Wendy Blair as a donation to the Ekurhuleni Center for Orphan Children in Acornhoek. Sonja Sussens won a bottle of wine, compliments of SPAR, for her beautiful Malawian outfit, and Tom Gelletich won the ‘What’s a Wothamanga’ lucky draw prize of three nights for four adults and two children at Little Carthage in the Ndlovumzi Nature Reserve, compliments of Heather Wagner. Due to time restraints, the auctioning of some wonderful items donated by various people could not take place. We would like to thank these donors and inform everybody that the auctioning will now take place on social media to further raise funds for the charities we will be supporting in Malawi. It is assumed that the animal was chopped up and made into a meal. by the Department of Nature Conservation officials. Ignitious said that he has been told that ‘eight more lion are still roaming around and community members are scared for their lives and for their cattle in the area’. ‘The brave people of Finale still go out into the bushveld to look for their livestock. Even though they know that they are not safe and have already lost some of their cattle to a lion, they are still risking their lives for the wellbeing of their beloved livestock’ Ignitious ended.

Lucky Rapitsi FINALE - On April 17, police were called to the scene of crime in Finale Village. Although their response was fast, destruction of government property worth millions of Rands took place before they arrived. Preliminary investigations indicated that violence erupted in the village when members of the community went on a rampage and attacked the site of a water project which is contracted to the Department of Water and Sanitation. It is alleged that community members started throwing stones at workers, and also at the equipment on site. The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, said that one bus was burnt to ashes, and windows and windscreens of three bakkies, one excavator, one front loader, four mixer trucks and two Bell tippers, as

week begin. Die Riepies bedank graag elke toerorganiseerder, afrigter, borg
en ouer wat die ongelooflike geleentheid aan die leerders gebied het. #lekkerplek

The police will continue to hunt down all those responsible for this destruction’. The suspects in this matter are still unknown and no arrests have been made. The police are pleading with the public to come forward with information that can lead to the arrest of the perpetrators. Please contact Captain Cobra Moriri on 082 573 4773.

HOEDSPRUIT – Laerskool Drakensig se 1ste rugby span het die vakansie in Utrecht gaan toer. Hulle het deelge-
neem in ʼn drie dag rugbytoernooi.

HOEDSPRUIT – Thando Moyo has qualified in 100m to compete at a National Level in Cape Town. Thando, Lowveld Academy’s Headboy and one of the school’s first matric pupils has a friendly and engaging personality, which makes him a favourite among students and teachers alike. Sadly he recently suffered from a leg injury, but still achieved an outstanding time of 00:11.60 against local schools in Tzaneen. After re-
covering, he trained and improved his time to 00:10.94 which he ran at Limpopo SA Electronic time. This excellent time has allowed Thando to qualify for and compete in the National Secondary School athletics championships in Cape Town. Thando feels very excited and happy but a little bit scared of the competition. Lowveld Academy is immensely proud of Thando, and the whole school congratulates him on his accomplishment and his attitude of diligence and perseverance.
