Environmental Education value HOEDSPRUIT - DAKTARI Bush School and Wildlife Orphanage provides supplementary environmental and life skills education to Grade 8 learners in the nearby underprivileged communities. But DAKTARI is also a wildlife orphanage for animals that have no possibility of being released into the wild. The wildlife orphanage started with a blind donkey and a bushbuck. Today, more than 80 animals call DAKTARI home, including that same blind donkey and bushbuck. They regularly welcome baby animals such as: meer-

kat, mongoose, squirrels, various antelope or bush-babys, which play a large role in the children’s education about the environment. The children get to interact daily with the animals at DAKTARI’s wildlife orphanage. The animals live in enclosures throughout the camp or live free in the bush surrounding the camp. Twice a day, the children assist volunteers and staff with animal feeding and care. Sometimes the children and volunteers are able to raise the babies successfully enough that they can be released back into the bush. The facility offers the opportu-
nity for the students to experience rare animals like cheetah, and jackal in person. Unfortunately, many of children have never seen the local wildlife even if they live near the Kruger National Park. The cost of entering these game reserves,
both national and private, is too high for their families to afford. Their faces light up when they arrive and see a cheetah have a meal or have a squirrel jump on their shoulder. This experience inspires the children to want to protect these animals them!

MoU to improve conservation training

Dianne Tipping-Woods ORPEN - On 24 April the Southern African Wildlife College (SAWC) and the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) signed a memorandum of understanding to formalize their collaboration as leading institutions in conservation education, training and skills development in southern Africa. The MoU allows students from the UMP to be immersed in understanding and solving real conservation issues thanks to the physical positioning of the SAWC campus in a wildlife area, with neighbouring communities, and its commitment to applied learning. From SAWC’s perspective it will increase the College’s capacity to carry out research to improve conservation practices. ‘We have many mutual objectives when it comes to building the skills, knowledge and capacity of the conservation leaders of the future. Working together, we believe that our respective students will benefit from our complementary approaches to higher
education in the conservation sector and the opportunities these afford students,’ noted Vice Councellor of the UMP, Professor Thoko Mayekiso and CEO and Vice Chancellor of SAWC, Theresa Sowry in a joint statement. UMP offers high quality educational and training opportunities that foster the holistic development of students through teaching and learning, research and scholarship, and engagement, in collaboration with strategic
partners. SAWC’s hands-on training programmes have a 20 year track-record of producing highly competent and motivated conservation practitioners who ‘learn-bydoing’. ‘In signing this MoU, it is the aim of both the SAWC and the UMP to apply our respective skills and resources to improve the many aspects of conservation training on offer in southern Africa. Working together will positively impact the roll-out of our teaching, learning and research objectives, to the end benefit of conservation,’ noted Thoko and Theresa. The institutions’ collaboration may extend to jointly developing funding proposals, or seeking funding, for both on-going and new projects that have potential for collaboration. It will also allow for better benchmarking of each institutions’ programmes for best practice purposes. This will include examining opportunities for qualification articulation, recognition of prior learning and credit and accumulation, as well as transfer schemes for the institutions’ qualifications. Closer alignment on qualifications will also mean that SAWC Advanced Certificate students can seamlessly transition to the university’s second year of their Diploma in Nature Conservation (DIPCON) qualification. It will also open up post-graduate studies opportunities with the SAWC campus in the Greater Kruger area as a practical, applied learning site for the UMP.

HOEDSPRUIT – Southern Cross Schools are getting serious about making a difference and doing something positive for the planet by reducing plastic waste. An impressionable presentation on how our rubbish, aka ‘trash’, is affecting the world kick-started our annual Earth Day programme and motivated both learners and staff to take action for the benefit of humanity and the environment. College learners headed out with this positive attitude to sweep our town for litter that was then brought back to school for separation. Plastic, food packaging, tinfoil, polystyrene and cling film was sought out as suitable waste for the packing of the innovative Eco Bricks, which the younger learners of our school began to eagerly fill. This is but the start of this project, to be continued by every child over the course of the year. Our intention, as a school, is to use Eco Bricks for various building projects. SOUTH AFRICA - On Monday, 23 April 2018 – almost exactly a year to the day since winning the landmark nuclear court case against the South African government – it was announced that the two women who were the driving force behind the victory were Africa’s winners of the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize in San Francisco, USA. Liziwe McDaid from the Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI) and Makoma Lekalakala from Earthlife Africa Johannesburg (ELA-JHB), were honoured for their efforts to successfully mobilise South Africans against the government’s secret R1-trillion nuclear deal. The two courageous grassroots activists, have been recognised for leading a broad
coalition of like-minded citizens and NGOs – from around South Africa – to successfully expose government’s unlawful and unconstitutional nuclear deal with Russia, and restoring some faith that justice was still possible in South Africa.

Retha Redlinghuys HOEDSPRUIT – Drakensig Primary School, once again, successfully hosted its annual golf day this past Saturday, with 19 four ball teams participating. Trail run series takes off
Michael Dickerson HOEDSPRUIT – April 21 saw the first trail run of its kind hit the Lowveld. The inaugural Pam Golding Wildlife Estate Series, hosted by Lowveld Trail Running, kicked off with the first run at Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate,
and was the perfect start to the series with some magical stories being told. The 5km section was dominated by the youngsters, with Brian Mangena and Jorja Harwood winning their sections. Both are learners, but it was the fact that Jorga, being only 12 years old, won the woman’s
section which made it very special. The 10km event was no exception, it was the ladies that showed how things should be done. First and second place overall went to two talented ladies, Molly Hove and Claudia Slattery respectively. What an awesome achieve-
ment. The story of the day however emerged out of the 20km event, where sponsored runner Alloise Mdhlovu ran an absolute blinder. Alloise, a local security guard who works at the actual event venue, Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate gate, did a 12 hour

night-shift, slept for one hour and then came in first with a blistering time of 1:23:29. Although there was a racing element to the event, many people turned up to just walk and enjoy being out in nature on a beautiful estate. It was a fantastic start to the series with local businesses
and individuals pulling out all the stops to support the event. We hope to see this momentum continue with the second even taking place this weekend on May 6, at the Zandspruit Bush & Aero Estate. We hope to see you there. www.loveldtrailrunnning. co.za for more info.
