Bateleurs to the rescue Iconic photographer Sam Nzima has died

HOEDSPRUIT – Pangolins are the world’s most illegally traded mammals although they are a rare and protected species. The commercial trade in, and the possession of, pangolins and pangolin body parts are strictly prohibited, and these illegal activities have led to poachers receiving heavy sentences of late. These unique and beautiful animals endure extreme suffering when poached – mainly due to misguided and erroneous traditional beliefs. On February 13, Bateleurs received an urgent call from Nicci Wright, Senior Wildlife Manager for Humane Society International (HIS) - Africa, requesting air rescue for a pangolin that was confiscated from poachers by Protrack. The pangolin was kept in a paint drum without food and water for a week. Dr Peter Rogers and his team from ProVet in Hoedspruit managed to stabilise the pangolin but it needed to be flown to Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital for specialised medical intervention. Bateleur pilot Anton Millar immediately volunteered and flew Nicci and Dr Karin Lourens to Hoedspruit to collect the pangolin. The pangolin, Cirrus (named after Anton’s aircraft), received the best medical care possible. Tragically Cirrus lost the battle, ironically but perhaps significantly, on World Pangolin Day due to pneumonia. On March 5, Bateleurs received a second call from Nicci. A male pangolin, destined for trade, was confiscated from poachers in Acornhoek, Limpopo, once again by Protrack. Dr Peter Rogers again examined and stabilised the pangolin who had a broken leg from being hit. Bateleurs pilot Noel McCullough flew Nicci and Dr Karin to Hoedspruit where they took custody of the pangolin, who was named Soshangana, from ProVet Wildlife Services. Dr Karin operated on Soshangana and plated his leg, and HSI-Africa and the Johannes-

LOWVELD - Sam Nzima, the man behind one of the most famous photographs ever taken in South African history, has died at the age of 83. He was hospitalised after collapsing, and after beginning to recover he unexpectedly passed away in the Rob Ferreira hospital on Saturday evening, May 12. memorated to this day as ‘Youth Day’ in South Africa. The 13 year old Hector was not the first or the last to die that day, but it was Sam Nzima’s photograph that captured the moment, and made an international statement that made the whole world sit up and take note. It also changed his life and put an abrupt end to his career in journalism
when he had to flee from the security police in Johannesburg to hide in Lilydale near Acornhoek. Although at the time, and for years afterwards, Sam regretted having taken the picture, he came to believe that through his photography he contributed a lot towards achieving democracy in our country. Heidi Lee Smith travelled to meet Sam in 2004 to write a story about him, and a special friendship developed between them which lasted until his death. Six months after their first meeting, Sam asked Heidi to be his representative for the famous picture, as well as for the small collection of

HDS water reticulation HOEDSPRUIT TOWN WATCH - Johan Potgieter, Chairperson of the Hoedspruit Town Watch has requested that a new water reticulation infrastructure for Hoedspruit should be added to the IDP. Town Watch claims that residents of Hoedspruit call on them in order to rapport bursts in the water reticulation system in town. They in turn rapport the problem to the Maruleng Municipality Technical Department. Johan Potgieter says that although the municipality always reacts very quickly, the time, effort and money wasted to fix the reticulation system is be-

coming very expensive. In his letter to Maruleng Municipality, he reminded the municipality that residents in town actually pay for water use, which includes paying for the infrastructure. He said it is time that that money was put to good use and that the water reticulation system was upgraded and replaced as the current system is very old. He added: ‘As you can note the problems with the water reticulation system are not new and they happen constantly. It takes a lot of resources to repair these bursts, and as we all know, water provision is a problem and water is a scarce resource and will become even scarcer in future. We must do everything in our power to save water. Thousands of liters of water regularly run down our streets.’ ‘We regard this as an important priority and we request that this be included in the IDP document for the 2018/19 financial year,’ he wrote. Included in the letter was a list of recent dates of water pipe bursts that had been reported. They included: 24 July 2016; 28 July 2016; 19 March 2017; 19 December 2017, 31 December 2017; 1 January 2018; 2 January 2018; 4 January 2018; 7 March 2018; 5 April 2018; 10 April 2018; and 20 April 2018. Johan is calling upon the IDP Manager, Aubrey Shabangu to add this request in the IDP for the 2018/19 financial year.
Police officials attacked Lucky Rapitsi THE OAKS - On April 24, Hoedspruit police members were attacked by community members while they were conducting a random stop-andsearch at The Oaks Village outside Hoedspruit. According to spokesperson Livhuwani Mulaudzi: ‘It is alleged that the police spotted a man who appeared to be
armed, the man was searched and found to be in possession of an unlicensed firearm, the police attempted to arrest the suspect but they were attacked by the community instead’. ‘The two suspects Nicholas Mabilo and Isaac Molele were remanded by the police and were charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, malicious damage to property and assault’, added Livhuwani.
National bus strike ends NATIONWIDE - The crippling national bus strike that has left thousands of commuters frustrated for weeks is finally over. Last week, employers and unions reached agreement on wage increases. Labour unions in the bus sector, SATAWU, TAWUSA, NUMSA, TOWU and TASWU have accepted the latest wage offer by bus employers
to end the lengthy national bus strike. Workers officially returned to work on May 16.

Submissions can be addressed to Pat Jayiya, Committee Section, Parliament, P O Box 15, Cape Town or emailed to pjayiya@parliament.gov.za It is of the utmost importance that all, and not just property owners, make their voices heard to protect The Constitution and property rights. All property rights are in jeop-
ardy and not just land ownership and because of this, public participation is taken very seriously by the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC). Every submission will receive attention. The Democratic Alliance is represented on the CRC by Adv Glynnis Breytenbach, Mr Janes Selfe and Dr Annelie Lotriet The public participation process kicks off in Limpopo and the CRC will be in our province for the public hearings on 27 – 30 June 2018. It is important that everyone attends to safeguard The Constitution and property rights.
The general feeling is also that organisations and political parties in favour of land expropriation without compensation will mobilise their members en masse. Now is not the time to be complacent and to remain in our comfort zones. All of us have a responsibility to get actively involved in this process to make our voices heard. DURBAN – Sixteen years of attending Indaba makes Kruger2Canyon a well-known and well-loved paper amongst visitors and exhibitors alike. The primary theme of SA Tourism this year is the 100th Birthday anniversary of Nelson Mandela. SA Tourism is challenging all South Africans to find 100 parts of Madiba in themselves. The fabulous theme created a bonding atmosphere at an Indaba where numerous product owners expressed concern for the future of tourism in South Africa.
Right to Health International Nurses Day Desiré Wright HOEDSPRUIT – At Hlokomela we understand all too well the heavy workload under which our nurses operate every day. With budget cuts and retrenchments looming, the burden will not become any lighter soon. Therefore, we fully agree with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) that ‘Nurses also have a right to health’. To celebrate this year’s theme of International Nurses Day, Hlokomela’s nurses were spoilt by Anneri van Zyl from Hoedspruit Massage Therapy, Jurie Moolman and Khaki Fever Hoedspruit. Anneri helped our nurses to relax with massage and beauty treatments while Khaki Fever sponsored each
nurse with a voucher from their shop and Jurie’s donation bought each a special treat to take home. According to Sizeni Mchunu, SANC Registrar & CEO, the challenges nurses face in their line of duty is often at the cost of themselves and their own health, especially when it comes to stress and its related condition, hypertension. In the words of Florence Nightingale: ‘For the sick it is important to have the best’ and we believe that is true of our nurses here at Hlokomela! Thank you to everyone who made this day special for our nursing staff. For more info on Hlokomela, please visit www.hlokomela. org.za.

I certainly enjoyed the opportunities presented, and a highlight for me was meeting Desre Buirski, of Presidential Shirts, the lady who made all of Nelson Mandela’s famous shirts. Desre describes herself as a dreamer, and accredits this to her meeting Madiba, developing a relationship with him and getting to make many of the famous shirts he wore. She has a generous energy about her, someone you feel you could sit around a fire and chat to for hours. Taking home her beautiful book about her journey was a fantastic gift.

She also managed to secure the support of top copyright attorneys Adams & Adams who ensured the proper security and legal support to put a stop to the abuse of his images. Where all of Hoedspruit meets
HOEDSPRUIT - All of Hoedspruit did indeed seem to be at the Farmers’ Market on the first Saturday of May! The car park was packed at 9 o’clock in the morning, and trading, eating, drinking and socialising were in full swing. The market moved a year ago to its new venue at the Bosveld Centre, about 2 km south of Hoedspruit on the R40, and has gone from strength to strength. The centre also houses Safari Wines with their wine bar The Venue, the Cooked restaurant and Vandi’s Deli, and several art and craft shops, making it a location well worth visiting. Tansy McLean, the main organiser of the market, was at her famous yoghurt stall right in the middle of it all. She said that there are usually between 60 and 70 stalls, but it’s quite fluid; there are some anchor stalls, but also something new and unusual at every market. Near to Tansy’s stall were Kleo and Ansophie, selling a mouth-watering selection of rusks, cookies and koeksisters, all homemade, and Ouma’s famous milk tart. Their produce was selling like proverbial hot cakes! For more substantial
bakery products you could visit Charlie and Wilma, whose ciabattas and rye breads often sell out, and Karen Tilney of The Wholefood Collection in Hoedspruit provided delicious cheeses and olives to go with them. There was far more on offer than food. Rhino Revolution regularly sell their merchandise at the market, and merchandise manager Kathie Bell said that this is a way for them to reach an international audience. Tourists are happy to buy quality while supporting a good cause, and a few months ago they sold three bronze rhinos at R4000 each to international visitors. Sophie and Kelly, both aged 10, were selling their shweshwe-covered notebooks near the Rhino Revolution stall. Both girls are from Southern Cross, and had been up late on the previous night finishing the notebooks for their big day at the market Hoedspruit Chamber of Commerce was on site to provide credit card facilities for shoppers who suddenly realised that they had used up all their cash. Joan Arnestad explained that stallholders who have signed
up with them can send their clients to pay at the HCC stall. A small percentage of the money goes to HCC, who will eventually channel it to charitable causes. The Kruger to Canyon Biosphere stall attracted attention with their unusual products. Shoki explained that they were selling products made by farm-

ers in the region to open up a market for them. The produce on sale included moringa powder, marula jam and homemade soaps, some made by Anna Selane who was there in person to help with the sales. Maureen Lahoud’s fabulous dance group Roots of Rhythm provided entertainment for vis-
itors taking a break from the ardours of shopping. A different kind of diversion was provided in the health check tent, where you could have your blood pressure, pulse and body mass index checked and receive dietary advice for a healthier living. The free health check was supervised by Drs Jaco
Blignaut and Werner Muller, and was the kick-off for Live a Fruitful Life, a month of health focus events which was advertised in the previous issue of K2C News. The next market is on Saturday, June 2. Don’t miss the next highlight of the Hoedspruit social calendar!
HOEDSPRUIT - Thank you Hoedspruit! From the bottom of our hearts, the Hoedspruit Malawi Marathon Runners (Lize Dumon, Tom and Hanlie van der Meulen, Belinda Barkas, Amber Jacobs and Cameron Jacobs) would like to thank every Hoedspruiter who supported us in raising funds towards the charity projects we will be working on in Malawi. Whether you have helped raise awareness (Heidi Lee Smith); donated funds into our fundraising account; helped us host our Malawian Evening (Blue Mountain Restaurant, Michel Girardin, Mark Blair, Tracy Den Dunnen, Patrick Green); showed your support on the evening; given your time and talent and resources; donated items for the auction (David Du Plessis, Alloway Equestrian, Patrick Green, Tom van der Meulen, Sonja Sussens Carne,
PTC Hoedspruit - Professional Therapeutic Coaching Centre, Heidi Lee Smith, Lowveld Trail Running, Michael Dickerson) or participated in Hoedspruit’s first ever online auction – you have made a difference in someone’s life, giving them hope to face tomorrow with a dream instead of despair in their hearts. Thank you! So far we have raised R42,804 of which R14,563 was from our Malawian Evening, R7890 from the online auction, R2100 from auctioning our two runners packages and the rest were private donations. That is awesome: it amounts to 2577 Pounds. The desired goal from the organisers of the charity event in Malawi was 1000 pounds per runner (6000 pounds for our group then) and our own ambitious goal was to reach R50 000. We came close with R42804. The table below
will give an idea of the impact our group will be having in Malawi: Any person who still wants to learn more about the Impact Marathon and Charity project, or who wants to donate to this worthy cause, can visit our Facebook page Hoedspruit Marathon Runners Online Charity Auction, and click on the ‘shop now’ button. Keep us in your thoughts as we leave on Sunday 20 May. We will be working on our charity projects for the whole of the week, including hosting a fun sports day for the children of the Nkope community before running our full and half marathons on Saturday May 26. We will be back in the Hoed on May 28 with lots of pictures and stories to tell! Thank you for being part of that story! Watch this space for the rest of the story.

Exciting changes at Southern Cross Schools
SA MUSIC - Mariska Dreyer believes that music speaks to the heart in ways that words alone cannot. Incidentally, this is an accurate assessment of this newcomer’s striking first album. Dankie, the title track and first single of the album, was written by Johan Oberholzer and has a catchy rhythm complemented by meaningful lyrics. It’s about being grateful to be alive. “Do we ever say thank you enough? I feel compelled to give thanks for so many things in my life,’ says the singer. The single will hit radio stations nationwide during mid May 2018 and a music video is also on the cards for this beautiful song. Mariska grew up on a farm just outside Hoedspruit and has been passionate about classical music from the age of five. She started taking singing lessons in grade 1, and
soon she also mastered instruments such as the piano, violin and keyboard, for which she raked in a string of awards at the Eisteddfod in her matric year. At the age of seventeen, she released her own demo album, Optelmeisiekind, which consisted of 36 tracks in Afrikaans and English. This led to
the release of two music videos in 2011, Reënboog Hart and Alles Vir Liefde – a duet with Rian Ungerer – which was chosen to represent Africa at the Eurovision music video contest. The track is also included in Select Music’s album and DVD compilation, Ons Sing Duet.
HOEDSPRUIT - It’s been a very long, tough journey for my family and many people from the Hoedspruit community have been a part of it. Back in 2010, aged just 25 and mother to a toddler and a new-born, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer. Our GP at the time, Dr Mark Blair, was the one who spotted serious alarm bells and sent me off to hospital. For more than seven years since, I have been battling through endless chemotherapy and full body radiation treatment plans. Bouncing between hospitals and doctors rooms in Hoedspruit, in Nelspruit and Pretoria. In 2014 I received a stem cell transplant, donating my own cells back into my body in an attempt to “reboot”. In 2016 I became very sick again with fatigue and chronic back pain that prevented me from continuing my work as a teacher. Tests revealed the pain was from fast growing tumours and I was put back onto chemotherapy as a matter of great urgency. After 12 rounds of chemo, I was back in remission again, but my Clinical Haematologist in Pretoria assured us that the only way to remain in remission was to have another transplant, but
this time for a donor. The search for a donor who was the perfect tissue type match for me, began. My elder brother in England was tested as the most likely match, however, sadly he was not. Through the Sunflower Fund we searched every donor listed in South Africa – none of them were a match. Your chances of a perfect match are 1 in 100 000, so the only option was to begin fund raising again to pay for an international data base search for a donor. Hoedspruit rallied together and hosted the most amazing fund raisers – and a donor match was found, in Germany. Sadly, in the time it took to find a donor, I had already relapsed again. The cancer was back and spreading fast. By this point, treatment options are few and far between, but my Oncologist suggested we try a new chemotherapy drug, not yet licensed in South Africa. The catch? Medical aid won’t assist at all with financing. So once again, Hoedspruit came to our aid with financial help from Silent Discos to Shaveathons, art exhibitions, prizes for events, countless donations of time, services and money. Alas, the new chemotherapy
did not work and on my 32nd birthday last year in September, we received the news that the cancer was not only back, but that it had metastasised to my liver, lungs and bones. I was no longer eligible to receive a transplant and my donor was informed that he was no longer needed. By December things went from bad to worse, very quickly. Just before Christmas, I was nearly dead. My family all came to stay with us and I was rushed to hospital by ambulance three separate times for chronic pain and liver failure. My GP Dr Immy Llewellyn and the Hoedspruit Medical Rescue ambulance were phenomenal. Immy has been on call and available to me at any hour of the day for months and I cannot thank her enough for everything she does. The paramedics saw me at my worst, screaming in the most horrific pain, and remained so calm, offering me immense comfort – I’m so grateful! In hospital I was put in an isolation ward and told the only option was Immunotherapy. Immunotherapy works by making your own immune system over active, to fight the cancer without chemotherapy. There was a clinical

HOEDSPRUIT – As of April 9, Southern Cross Schools embarked on a new and exciting journey. Under the leadership of Mickey Viegas, there is an electrifying vibe and positive energy resonating throughout the school. Mickey joined Southern Cross Schools in 2013 as Head of the Pre and Preparatory schools. Both schools have grown in numbers and strength under his leadership over the last six years. With the resignation of Ant de Boer, who moved on to head up a school in Giyani, Mickey has been appointed as overall Headmaster of all three schools – Pre and Prep-school and the College. Mickey did his schooling in Middleburg, completed his Diploma in Secondary Education to pursue a career in Johannesburg, and later progressed to working in Botswana. He and his wife Liesl, also a teacher, decided to move closer to family and amenities needed for the bringing up of two young children and relocated to Hoedspruit. Mickey’s favourite quote is ‘life is a journey and only you hold the map’. It is not surprising that Mickey
accepted the new challenge as Head of Southern Cross Schools! On taking up the position, other positions were put in place to ensure Mickey would be supported in his challenging role. Pauline Blunden continues as the HOD of the Pre-school. Pauline aspires to make a difference in children’s lives and feels this is all that matters in the teaching profession. Inneke Esterhuizen, who joined Southern Cross Schools in 2016, is the Grade 6 class teacher and has been appointed as the HOD in the Preparatory School. Inneke says that the best day in a teacher’s life is when you see a child’s face light up when they learn something new and exciting. In the College, Greg Gibbs remains a HOD. Greg is responsible for all academic matters and his mission as a teacher is to lay a foundation for young adults to build a successful career and be a productive member of society. Sophia du Preez, who has been at Southern Cross Schools since 2010, has also been appointed as a College HOD. Sophia teaches Afrikaans and Life Orientation and her new
portfolio includes all learner and staff affairs. Sophia has been in teaching for 26 years and is still loving it! Louis du Preez remains HOD of the two boarding houses at Southern Cross Schools. Tamboti Lodge is for girls and Jackalberry Lodge for boys from Grade 6 - 12. Along with these appointments, there have been other supporting roles implemented in the administration of the school: Pauline Naudé is the Pre and Prep School Secretary, Mitzi Janse van Rensburg is the College Secretary and Shayne Hingle is the Administration Secretary responsible for school admissions, Human Resources and staff and learner welfare. Tracey Larmont has been appointed as the school’s Marketing Liaison. The new infrastructure has been put in place to polish and add to the gems Southern Cross Schools already has on their staff. SCS is the local IEB School, providing a forward thinking and modern education for the local community. With all these new developments, the positive energy is tangible and we look forward to a very exciting journey.

trial being conducted with the drug in Pretoria, but I did not qualify for it. The list of unknowns and things that can go wrong was huge and massively scary. Not only that, but the drug is again unlicensed in South Africa and would cost far more than chemo. People around the world and in our amazing little town, once again, began fund raising. In January, I had my first dose, and every two weeks since have been back for more. Today, I am feeling so strong. My blood work looks great and all of my organ functions are back to normal! The transformation has been quite simply remarkable. I am once again eligible for donor stem cells which should save my life. Next week I have a PET Scan in Pretoria and plan the route ahead to transplant. This little town in the middle of the bush that we all call home, has proven to be the community responsible for a huge role in saving my life. Hoedspruit, with every ounce of my being, I thank you!

An inspired freedom challenge
Angela Green
HOEDSPRUIT - My Freedom Challenge journey started when my husband Patrick told me we were moving to Hoedspruit. My life felt out of control, so I started training hard on my mountain bike and took the plunge to enter Ride Across South Africa (fondly known as Freedom Challenge RASA). After moving to Hoedspruit (now the best place in the world) my training went to a new level because I could leave home in the early hours of the morning and train amongst the wildlife in a safe environment. This was freedom. With a radio interview pending I started searching my heart and realised that if this ride is only about me it is an empty pursuit. Long story short, Michaela Shoebotham and I have miraculously crossed paths and now the journey is bigger than us both. What is this Freedom Challenge RASA about? Imagine arriving at a game fence that is 2.4-metre-high (7.87 foot)
and the maps and the narratives instruct you to get to the other side. The only problem is you have a mountain bike with you, you are a metre shorter than the fence and the equipment you are carrying adds 20kg to your body weight. This is just one of the obstacles you will encounter on the 2300 kilometres (1429 miles) of Freedom Challenge adventure. The fitter you are the more you will enjoy the ride. An average day on the trail will be at least 8 hours of riding, carrying in your backpack everything you need to survive, be it fruit cake, warm clothing, bicycle spares . . . Parts of the trail are too steep, rough, overgrown or indistinct to ride on, so you will be forced to either push your bike or carry it. Often you will need to navigate with your map and compass at the same time. RASA is held in June/July each year. It is our winter time and in the mountains and the valleys temperatures range from freezing -15 degrees to roasting 35 degrees. Bad weather means
all riders during the race. We are riding from “kitchen table to kitchen table” enjoying the abundant hospitality of the support station hosts. To give you an example Mr Ndlovu sleeps by the door so that as the riders arrive at all hours of the night the door nudges him awake. He then prepares warm food for the riders. It is a non-stop event so riders do not have to spend the night at support stations they just need to check in and check out. Every rider has a tracker so you will be able to watch their dot as they move along the trail. You can log onto www. freedomchallenge.org.za for live tracking. On a personal note: I am very aware that anything can happen on this challenge but I am no longer riding for the finishers blanket, I am riding for my teammate Michaela. I hope you will join hands with us and donate to her Stem Cell Transplant https://www.justgiving. com/crowdfunding/michshoes so Michaela can finish her race and walk healed.

cold, wet, muddy or windy conditions, which can slow you down. If you get lost you are not allowed to ask for food, water or shelter except from designated emergency stops as arranged by the race director. You are not allowed to make a fire so you need to be sure you are carrying the right gear to survive the night. I am in Batch 2 and leave from Pietermaritzburg on the 13th of June 2018. Maximum time allowed for the event is 26 days to reach Wellington in the Cape. To give you a taste of the first 3 days (which are some of the toughest): Day 1 we ride 98 km and climb 2515 metres. Day 2 we ride 96km and climb 2480 metres. Day 3 we ride 96 km and climb 1635 metres. There are 24 support stations which also serve as compulsory check points. The support stations occur every 80-100km along the route and provide food and accommodation to

KZN -Samantha Sanders and Amy Mc Dougall can be extremely proud of their win at the three day annual MTB Sani2c. Sam and Amy have both participated in a number of Sani2c’s but a win eluded them until this past weekend. Sam signed on with Team dormakaba in Decmeber 2017 for the 2018 season and Amy recently signed with the team for the remainder of the 2018 season. While Sam and Amy are no strangers to racing as a team, having paired up in 2017, they finished 2nd at Sani2c and 2nd at the FNB Wines2whales, this was their first win as Team dormakaba cementing their status as a formidable duo. We look forward to watching them at the upcoming SA Champs.
Amy Mc Dougal and Samantha Sanders, win Sani2c. Amy originally from JHB and Sam from Hoedspruit.
