Secrets of the rare brown hyena Dr Katy Williams

SOUTH AFRICA - Although Kruger National Park is a haven for much South African wildlife, it is not an ideal home for the secretive and submissive brown hyena. Land outside of protected areas is vital to their survival, and I have been finding out why in my role as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Mpumalanga. My research is conducted in collaboration with Durham University and Panthera, an international organisation dedicated to the conservation of wild cats. We used data from 984 camera trap stations situated at sites in seven South African provinces to determine which factors affect land usage by brown hyenas. Panthera primarily ran the camera trap surveys in partnership with the South African National Biodiversity Institute and other stakeholders. Camera traps were set up in national parks, nature reserves, game farms, and cattle farms. Three of the study sites were local – Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, Makalali Private Game Reserve, and Timbavati Game Reserve. The results indicated that brown hyenas strongly avoid areas with high levels of activity by spotted hyenas. The more dominant spotted hyenas steal food from brown hyenas and may even kill them. Some protected areas like Kruger host high densities of spotted hyenas and as a result brown hyenas are largely extirpated in these areas. The majority of sites surveyed in the eastern part of South Africa, including the sites within the Kruger to Canyon Biosphere Reserve, had lower average occupancy estimates than those situated further north and west. This is likely to be attributed to higher densities...cont on pg2...

Secrets of the rare brown hyena...cont ‘Let’s fix the challenges faced by current beneficiaries of land reform, then we can move forward’ ...from pg1...of spotted hyena in this region. Human disturbance also affected the areas that brown hyenas occupy. Our research determined that brown hyenas actively try to avoid areas with high human foot traffic. This may be because humans present a threat to brown hyena survival through poaching, legal hunting, or damage causing animal control. Surprisingly, brown hyena occupancy was higher at sites with greater vehicle activity. Vehicle-based eco-tourism is conducted across many of the study sites, and in these areas vehicles do not pose a risk to hyenas. Vehicle presence may indicate preferable conditions such as low human foot traffic and high levels of prey species. The findings of this study will help to inform conservation strategies for brown hyenas across their international range. Private landowners can contribute to and benefit from brown hyena conservation as well. As predominant scavengers, brown hyenas clean up dead animals naturally and lower disease transmission. With a reliance on nonprotected areas for survival, brown hyenas need livestock

Katy Williams (setting up a camera trap in the bush) received her PhD from Durham University in the United Kingdom, although the research for her thesis was conducted in South Africa. She studied brown hyenas in and around the Southpansberg Mountains, Limpopo Province. Before that she spent several years in Zimbabwe where her husband, Sam, worked on his PhD on the subject of predators and land reform.¬ Both Katy and Sam are now doing postdoctoral work and are based in the Hoedspruit area.

LAND REFORM – Insight from Vumelana Advisory Fund: What the country needs for successful land reform is a diverse and flexible set of instruments to speed up the process. ‘The amendment of Section 25 of the Constitution will not address the current problems of land reform, said Peter Setou, Chief Executive of the Vumelana Advisory Fund speaking at the 9th Annual Rural Development Policy Conference held in Durban. Setou highlighted the high failure rate of land reform: it was estimated that in 2010, 90% of the land transferred was no longer economically active. Although the failure was reduced from 90% to 70% in 2012, this is not enough to sustain food security. ‘We need simplified restitution processes and restrictions on access to capital must be removed. District land reform

committees must be strengthened and current governance practices among Communal Property Institutions (CPIs) must be addressed,’ he cited. ‘Tenure reform must address the rights of millions of families in communal areas. Resources must be enhanced and post settlement support expanded to enable the success of land reform,’ he said. Setou argued that, while the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform has increased budgets for post settlement support substantially, funding support still needs to be further increased. ‘Our approach to addressing issues around land ownership, restitution, redistribution and reform should acknowledge the impact of historical dispossession and the need for reform. Ensuring a just and equitable process that still acknowledges the importance of property rights is vital.’

NOTICE Democratic Alliance

Re: Expropriation without compensation

He explained that the Community Private Partnership (CPP) model still presents a plausible solution to successful land reform. In a CPP model a partnership is formed between communities that acquire access to land and private parties who can support them. Typically, the communities bring their land and labour and the private partners or investors contribute resources and experience – they work together to ensure that the land received remains profitable. Leveraging the CPP model, Vumelana has facilitated 15 partnerships with a potential to mobilise an investment of R580 million, putting approximately 70 000 ha of land to productive use, and benefitting over 13 500 households. ‘Government must have a thorough look at what has worked with land reform before developing any new strategies. While there have been developments since the ANC’s land summit, it would still be fatal if the current debates around expropriation of land without compensation distract from issues requiring urgent attention within the land reform space, such as limited human and financial resources to address land reform,’ said Setou.

The Democratic Alliance in Limpopo urges all citizens to participate in the public hearing at the Lenyenye Community hall, Tzaneen local municipality, on 29 June 2018. This is the only public hearing in Mopani District. Anyone who values property can attend and make representations. The DA wants South Africans to own their land and are against the ANC’s and EFF’s proposal to change The Constitution, and more specifically section 25, also known as the property clause, to allow government to expropriate land without compensation so that all property and land is owned by state, and make citizens rent their homes and land from state. Historically South Africa suffers from a history of black people being denied land ownership. We do not need to change The Constitution to address this. We need government action. Under the DA’s plan, we will return land to the people through the biggest land redistribution in South African history. We put the people first. Under a DA government: You will own land, not rent it. Your property rights will be protected. You will own your RDP house. Your land claim will be settled. You will receive the support to farm successfully Desiree van Der Walt MP Political head: Hoedspruit, Phalaborwa, Modjadjiskloof, Tzaneen. Cell: 082 452 0444

Two children of Africa meet again

Tippi with Jessica and Sonja at Sausage Tree Safari Camp, where she is staying with camp owners Sonja and her husband James Carne

Kerstin Nyberg Peart HOEDSPRUIT - In 2002, two girls who had both experienced an extraordinary childhood met, and bonded immediately. In 2018 they met again: it was as if time had stood still and they took up where they left off 16 years earlier. Tippi Degré was born in Namibia and grew up among wild animals in the southern African bush. Her parents were wildlife photographers and filmmakers, and she spent her first nine years in remote camps with no other children for companions, only wild animals. Jessica Sussens grew up at Tshukudu Game Lodge,

a grandchild in the pioneering Sussens family, where orphaned lion cubs and other young wild orphans were hand reared by the family members. Tippi’s life in the bush ended when she moved to France at the age of ten. In 2002, she came back to South Africa to take part in a documentary for Discovery Channel. The filming was done at various reserves in the Hoedspruit area, with a large part at Tshukudu. Here Tippi and Jessica met and immediately became friends. They would disappear into the bush for hours on end, but Jessica’s mother, Sonja Sussens – Carne, was not worried. She

knew that the “wild children” were bush wise and could look after themselves. They shared a common background; what for most people sounds like The Jungle Book was normal life for them. Jessica stayed in Hoedspruit, and Tippi went back to Paris. Tippi tried to adjust to a totally different existence, and as life moved fast forward she tried not to look back too much. She studied cinematography, audiovisuals and editing, hoping to become a documentary film maker. When she was ten she wrote My Book of Africa, which tells the story of the first ten years of her life and which has been published in 14 countries. In 2013, Tippi joined FICMA, an international environmental film festival based in Barcelona in Spain, and in 2014 she was made Director of their children’s section El Petit FICMA. Tippi never felt at home in France, and the time came when she decided to come back to southern Africa. She had been back for short visits, but this time it would be with the possibility of returning for good, and was worried that she – but not Africa – had changed so much that she no longer felt that she belonged. She now knows that she is ready to move back and is looking for her niche in life. Educating children and reconnecting people with nature and wild animals are Tippi’s real passions. Her dream is to set up her own foundation and develop projects similar to Daktari Bush School in different parts of Africa, where children can bond with animals and learn to appreciate nature and wildlife. Tippi is aware that to succeed everything must be done in an ethically sound way; she feels that many organisations are failing because they cross ethical lines and push boundaries too far, although their intentions and purposes are good. Tippi and Jessica, wild children of the African bush, want to be ambassadors for nature and help others find the delicate solutions which the world needs, and they are well qualified for this task. The girls are at long last reunited and the story continues.....

The butterfly effect Anri Smit HOEDSPRUIT - In chaos theory, the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state can result in a large difference in a later state. This butterfly effect started with one ordinary but very dedicated teacher at Hoedspruit High. Marina Otto started as Maths and Physical Sciences teacher at Hoedspruit High in 2017, and since day one her positive attitude has influenced learners and other teachers. Marina’s son was born in 2013 with Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (CMD). Little Daniel lost his ability to walk and stand in July 2016, but despite of all of that Marina is probably one of the most engaged and dedicated teachers. Early every Saturday morning she gets up and picks up her Cross Country learners from their homes and takes them to events, whether it is the Park Run or Trail Runs. Marina’s selflessness, generosity and kindness has inspired many and in my heart I believe she has set this butterfly motion in effect. In March we decided to start the Daniel’s Lion Heart

Challenge Facebook page, with the aim to raise funds for Daniel and other children with similar challenges to buy the equipment they so desperately need. The main event is a tailormade obstacle course on 1 September 2018 which consists of a 400m Little Hero Race (ages 4-10), a 5km race with 10 obstacles (ages 11+) and then for the brave the 10km race with 20 obstacles (ages 14+). Now this is where the greatness begins: Blyde Adventure Camp offered their facilities for FREE for the event! Since then the Benjamin Osmers foundation joined the cause by taking on the Greek Island Swim Challenge. They will swim 80km self-assisted along the Zakinthos and Kefalonia’s eastern shorelines. All funds raised in this swim will go to Daniel Otto. The fundraising target is R36 000; donations to date stand at R1578.46 on www.backabuddy.co.za. Gerber Staalwerke donated a custom made ramp for Daniels wheelchair; Mr R Oosthuizen of Special Forces donated a wheelchair; Rotary Hoedspruit donated a commode; and Jahara Treatment Centre offered

their help with building the course and marshalling on the day. Lore Collet donated the special spa-bed Daniel needs for his physio treatments, and Mariepskop Pre-primary raised over R3000 towards Daniel’s physio treatments. Pieter Papsdorf from Hoedspruit Medical Rescue also offered his services on the day of the main event. So many amazing people have come forward to offer their help. I feel confident that with the backing of this astonishing community we can raise all the funds needed to assist the children that have been identified in our area with similar needs. On Saturday 26 May 2018 one of Marina’s Cross Country learners competed in the 2018 Rhino Warrior Challenge in honour of little Daniel. Not only did Jode Satsie win the Elite Singles race on the day, but he also set a new course record! Amazing how the dedication of a teacher can inspire the youth to get involved with charity and make a difference.

What is small and insignificant to you might mean the world to someone else… you do not have to be rich, powerful or influential to make a difference.

Where what & HOW Kerstin Nyberg Peart

HOEDSPRUIT - Recycling in Hoedspruit got off to an enthusiastic start a few years ago but seems now to have stalled. There is still a lot of interest, judging by the many questions being asked, and K2C News contacted Nico van Vuuren, who was one of the early drivers of the project. Nico tells us that he has sold 51% of his recycling company to his former manager, Happiness Lubisi, but that he is still involved in various projects at the facility. He says that more doors are opening for recycling through the involvement of Happiness, but that the stumbling block is that nobody in Hoedspruit is prepared to allocate an area for a recycling drop off in town. The only remaining collection site is next to the Bidvest car rental offices, near the bus station. The company already handles the recycling from all the wildlife estates, as well as lodges and private reserves around Hoedspruit. In addition to this they collect from several businesses, both in

Hoedspruit and Acornhoek. All municipality collections from town are taken to the London landfill site where sorters are recycling town waste. Nico is keen for anybody interested in recycling to call him. Unfortunately, they can’t do collections for just one or two households in town, but anybody is welcome to drop off recyclable items in Acornhoek. He is also looking into the option of parking a trailer somewhere in town once a week for people to drop off recycling. Please call Nico on: 083 6806341 if you want to discuss this further.

What to do this holiday: The Blyde Adventure Centre has a lot to offer HOEDSPRUIT - Did you know about these hidden gems near Hoedspruit? Have you seen the Kadishi Tufa Waterfall on the Blyde dam, within the third largest canyon in the world? The Blyde Canyon Nature Reserve is on the doorstep of Hoedspruit and there is no need to drive 120 km to the Panorama route to view the Thee Rondavels and the Kadishi Tufa waterfall, you can see them on one of our boat trips on the Blyde dam. You can enter the reserve from the Swadini, Forever resort side, just 43 km from Hoedspruit. Relax and unwind while the boat cruises towards the most beautiful spot in South Africa. One of the stops is at Hippo Valley where our resident hippos bask in the sun. Winter time is good for spotting the crocodiles on the sandbanks where they are catching some of the Hoedspruit heat. When the boat stops at the waterfall you will have the falls on one side while the Three Rondavels stand guard on the other. You may even be lucky enough to hear a fish eagle call out to his mate. If you are in the mood for something more dramatic and adventurous join us on one of our other activities. Choose from paintball, kloofing, quad bike trails, micro-light flights and hot air balloon rides. Kloofing

is an extreme hiking trail which is done at the Abel Erasmus pass, where you will jump into pools, walk over streams and do some caving. With a hike of about 3-4 hours, you need to be fit and mobile. You can also join us for a one hour quad bike trail in Franklyn Park at the foothills of the Mariepskop mountain. The Blyde Adventure Centre has been working hard to reopen Franklyn Park after it was closed a few years ago. We want to establish an Adventure Farm with activities to keep everyone busy. Currently you can do quad bike trails, hiking trails, paintball and archery. Three forest trails of varying difficulty take you through mountainous wilderness with breathtaking views. The bird list has 67 species, and you might come across species such as the Narina trogon and Knysna turaco, making the trails a bird and nature lover’s paradise. You can just get out and into the bush with family and friends, relax and unwind on the rolling lawns of the picnic site, or next to Sunshine dam with views towards Mariepskop Mountain. Dogs are welcome. On special occasions such as Mother’s and Father’s Day catering will be provided. For updates on Franklyn Park join us on Facebook / Franklyn Park

Are you planning to build a new house or lodge in the area? HOEDSPRUIT - This is how Construction Cost Consultants can reduce your building costs on new or ex-isting buildings. Hoedspruit has some of the highest building construction costs in the country. Sometimes the owners are overseas and have to trust the builder to look after their interest, but there are local building professionals who can help. Selection of designer and consultants: Once you decide to build, use specialist architects, engineers, project managers and other professionals. There are cheaper options of draughtsmen or others less qualified practitioners, but the savings can result in inferior designs with an eventual lower resale price. Most contracts have a provision for a person to look after your interests. It’s your right to choose your own, in terms of the agreement. These consultants can also check construction quality and conformity to the design, as well as monitor monthly claims and variations and negotiate the Final Account on your behalf. Drawings: Review the drawings yourself to get exactly what you want. Revise them as often as neces-sary. All complex work should be detailed, and all details and specifications shown on the drawings or contract documentation. Subsequent changes cost money

and delays. Get a minimum of three quotes. Five is even better. The cheapest may not be the best for you in terms of workmanship and quality. Get independent references of the contractor’s previous work. Contractors will only give you names of satisfied clients. Ask if the final price was reasonable. Visit houses and look for bad workmanship. Did the contractor repair defects quickly without argument? Prime cost and provisional sums: Make sure that these allowances are specified in the tender. Low allowances for prime costs and provisional sums can reduce the quote, but you cannot get the quality which you expected, and the net cost may be similar in the end. Type of Contract: Is the contact approved by any of the professional bodies? Many types of contracts can be used, and all have pros and cons, so get professional advice. Monthly Claims by the contractor: Don’t pay for any work not done at the date of the claim. Get con-firmation of the progress, and proof of material deliveries. Don’t pay for prime costs and provisional sums without backup documentation and invoices. Variations and site instructions: Confirm the cost effect of variations in writing before

you approve them. Ask for full details of costs claimed with all the extras or omissions to ensure that everything is covered and reasonable rates used. Quantities and work required should also accurately reflect the changes. Final Account: This cost shouldn’t be a surprise, if the above work has been carried out properly. Check for formulae errors, as all mistakes tend to be on the high side - obviously! Following these steps and review procedures should save 10% to 20% of your final construction cost. This document was prepared by Construction Cost Consultants – Quantity Surveyors, Project Manag-ers, Principal Agents, Cost Managers and Estimators, based in Hoedspruit. A Cost-Plus Construction Development service is also provided. Contact them for more detailed information and services. We can also advise on partially completed buildings.

Wild Olive Tree Camp ~ history in making ~

...from page5...when he met Henk and heard about their concept of community based training, the idea “caught like wild fire” between them, and they decided that he should bring his extensive background in the area to the project. The training courses will open up new opportunities to the local community by allowing young people to qualify as nature guides in the community, and without the sometimes prohibitive costs charged by the major training establishments. The courses are accredited by CATHSSETA as level 2, and equivalent to the FGASA level 1, and will open up employment opportunities both in private reserves and Kruger National Park, boost-

ing the economy not only of the local community but of the whole country. The first course is due to start on June 27, and is targeted primarily for professional people who want to add a guiding qualification to their skill set. The training is partly home based, with specific periods spent at the training camp adjacent to and part of the Wild Olive Tree Camp. Here the students will learn hands-on, and go out on drives with camp guests, gaining valuable practical experience. The course ends with an exam at a national level, and for successful trainees with a certificate issued by the national authority. The second course, starting on August 1, is funded

by CATHSSETA and gives 22 students the opportunity to gain the certificate free of charge. The course has been widely advertised in Welverdient and neighbouring communities, and Trust expects to receive around 400 applications for the 22 places. The Wild Olive Tree Camp and its Directors want to put an end to the idea that conservation is predominantly practised by non-black people, and want to show that local communities are as concerned about the environment, and can be as professional. They believe that community based courses will take training to new levels and the initiative is making historical forward steps.

Onder11’s wen Kampioenskap! Lowveld Running Fever

Chantelle Redelinghuys

Comrades marathon 2018 Lucky Rapitsi

HOEDSPRUIT - Jacky Mahlatse Bango from Portion 7 of Welverdiend Farm is proud

to have run the Comrades marathon on June 10. The race kicked off at 5:30am from the Pietermaritzburg City Hall with the finish at the Moses Mabhida

Stadium in Durban. Last year Jacky ran the marathon finishing in 11 hours and 24 minutes, just making it ahead of the 12 hour cut off time, and this year he improved by an hour with a finish time of 10 hours and 23 minutes. Jacky told Kruger2Canyon that he does not have a trainer or any diet guidance, and he would love to have someone to help him with his diet and training because he hopes to one day win the Comrades marathon. Jacky said ‘I would like to thank Djuma Private Game Reserve for the big support and the effort to encourage me to participate in the Comrades marathon’. He further said ‘Djuma, you are working so hard for me and Alloise, we really appreciate you support’. ‘I will also like to thank Hi-Q for allowing me to go and participate in the marathon and I am so proud of the support from the Hoedspruit community. I love you so much and I will never give up on running, running is my future’ said Jacky. ‘Lastly a thank you to Kruger2Canyon: all the best, I really appreciate the work being done - keep it up’ concluded Jacky.

HOEDSPRUIT – the Pam Golding Wildlife Estate Trail Run Series has come to an end much to the disappointment for those who were taking part. It was a great success for the local community and has laid the perfect platform for trail running in the Lowveld for the future. The Series, run by Lowveld Trail Running, took place on Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, Zandspruit Bush & Aero Estate, Blyde Wildlife Estate and Ndlovumzi Nature Reserve., allowing participants to have a taste of this ‘little bit of magic’ and allowed the estates to showcase what is on offer. The series was community focused and geared to getting the people to the trails, and did the community deliver! From the title sponsors to volunteers, it was amazing how many people put up their hands to jump on board. Funds were raised for specific conservancy needs and schools via a portion of runners’ fees and various donations, and a total of R11 052.00 was raised for conservancy and R10 165.00 for various schools and their athletes. A donation box was also available at each event where runners donated running equipment to those in need. A trail run however would not be a trail run without the competitive element. There were over 600 entrants throughout the series and each run delivered some unbelievable individual results. Good running and consistency however saw runners taking the overall series podiums. Winners of the series were as follows 5km Ladies - Jorja Harwood, 5km Men – Brian Mangena, 10km ladies – Molly Hove, 10km Men – Rob Severin, 20km Ladies – Julie Bryden, 20km Men – Alloise Mdholvu. Special mention should go to Jorja Harwood who at the age of 12 dominated the ladies’ section, and to Alloise Mdhlovu who won the Runners-Runner award for his great spirit and effort. Well done to all our trail heroes, we will see you for the next series in 2019. Keep a look out on www. lowveldtrailrunning.co.za for trail running events in the area.

Although this trail run series came to an end, the Lowveld running fever continues! Southern Cross Schools have a stunning 5km trail route in their school grounds, and make regular use of it during cross country training. When they heard that Hoedspruit was going to be the location for a Trail series, they encouraged Hoedspruit High and Lowveld Academy to participate to create a local inter-high school trail league. What talent we have in our little town! The schools enjoyed many podium finishes with Brian Mangena and Jorja Harwood, both learners from Southern Cross Schools, winning the series for the 5km men’s and 5km

ladies’ events respectively. It was a hard-fought series, but in the end, Southern Cross Schools managed to squeeze in with an overall win, with Hoedspruit High second and Lowveld Academy coming in third. A big thank you to Marina Otto and Elmarie van Heerden for their amazing support and commitment. The Southern Cross Schools look forward to participating in future events with your schools. The organisers would also like to make special mention of Jurie Moolman from Djuma Private Game Reserve for his generous sponsorship of our runner’s entry fees. Thank you Jurie, your continuous support is greatly appreciated.
