MOPANI - According to The Citizen newspaper, senior officials in Limpopo are accused of siphoning off cash by drilling fake boreholes and issuing invoices to family, friends and cronies. A Limpopo district municipality has suspended two senior officials amid allegations of the irregular awarding of borehole tenders, fraud and theft to the tune of R100 million. This comes after the portfolio committee on water and sanitation led by chairperson Lulu Johnson discovered that some service providers had charged the Mopani district municipality R2 million per borehole earlier this year. The committee, which visited water-related projects in the district, also found that three-quarters of the 4,820 boreholes drilled in Tzaneen, Giyani, Phalaborwa, Hoedspruit and Modjadjiskloof have not produced a drop of water. The municipality announced yesterday it had suspended two satellite managers, Solomon Rasethe of Letaba and Emanuel Ratshitanga of Tzaneen. “They will face internal disciplinary hearings in no time. We have appointed two other satellite managers so service delivery does not suffer,” said municipality spokesperson Witness Tiva, who could not divulge the nature of the charges as the matter was sub judice. However, sources privy to the details of the suspensions said they were accused of siphoning off cash by fabricating the drilling of boreholes and issuing invoices to their families, friends and political cronies for a total of more than R100 million. A three-week investigation by The Citizen revealed that, in June 2010, R25 million from the municipality’s op-

erational budget was paid among 25 companies for the maintenance and repair of dysfunctional boreholes in specified villages. But the awarding of the tenders was queried by some service providers, which said that only those with political links to the ANC Mopani regional leaders were

awarded tenders. Then R16 million was spent on repairing 4,000 nonfunctioning boreholes. This week, DA caucus leader in the Mopani District Municipality Marie Helm confirmed the district had serious water problems. She said residents of the Turkey and Butswana vil-

lages in Maruleng haven’t had water since 2013. ‘During the visit to the municipality last week, we were baffled to find that of the 16 boreholes drilled in the past five years, 15 were dry and only one had water in drips and drabs,’ she said. Helm added that the only water

pump, which had supplied several villages with water, had been stolen. EFF leader in Lephepane Sanco Madia accused the ANC of treating Mopani residents ‘like a kind of incurable disease when it comes to basic human needs’.

Suspect arrested in possession of a pangolin

LOCAL NEWS

Demands on Maruleng Municipality

Lucky Rapitsi THE OAKS – According to a statement from Hoedspruit SAPS, the police received information on 27 June 2018 about three people who were allegedly selling a pangolin at the tunnel plaza Total Garage in The Oaks. Hoedspruit Police acted swiftly upon the information and soon discovered a Polo Vivo which had been described to them, but when they tried to stop the vehicle the driver continued driving. According to the statement, while chasing after the vehicle they saw a passenger throwing a box out of the left hand window. The police stopped to pick up the box and found that a pangolin had fallen from the box. They picked up the injured pangolin and continued chasing the vehicle. They later found the vehicle abandoned, hidden in the bush at Ga-mametja village. The police waited for the driver to return, and he was immediately arrested. The pangolin was taken to a Hoedspruit vet, but due to its serious injuries it was transferred to Pretoria.

The suspect, Schoeman Douglas Thobejane, appeared in Hoedspruit periodical court on 3 July 2018 and was remanded in custody. He will appear again on 9 July 2018 in Hoedspruit.

‘By the most conservative estimates, 10,000 pangolins are trafficked illegally each year. No one knows how many pangolins are left in the wild. But scientists and activists say the number is shrinking fast. Some experts say the pangolin is likely the most trafficked mammal in the world. It’s impossible to say for certain, of course, because poachers don’t exactly submit spreadsheets on their activities” - CNN

HOEDSPRUIT - On June 28, the Civic Warriors of Maruleng and their supporters marched on the Maruleng Municipality to hand over a memorandum listing their demands. The Civic Warriors claim

that at Maruleng Municipality people are given jobs, tenders, RDP houses and other municipal services on the basis of their political affiliation or family connection, through bribery, and via various other corrupt means. They insisted that those who are not mem-

bers of the ruling party are totally discriminated against. The memorandum of demand stated that all people must be given equal opportunity. Angry community members of Civic Warriors and supporters, including the elderly, claim that they are tired of the matters that are taking place in Maruleng Municipality. They demanded that no one shall be appointed to the post of CFO and Corporate Services Director as per the unlawful resolution taken by Maruleng Municipal representatives on May 17, at Blyde Canyon Aventura. The memorandum stated that no unanimous agreement was achieved on this resolution, and that three months did not expire in relation to the previous council resolution to readvertise these posts, and they demanded that the post should be re-advertised. Members of the Civic Warriors of Maruleng gave the Municipality fourteen working days to respond to them with regards to the above mentioned grievances and demands. The Mayor of Maruleng Municipality, Happy Thobejane, signed for the memorandum detailing the demands from Civic Warriors of Maruleng. Lion translocation HOEDSPRUIT – On recieving an urgent request from Dr Joel Alves of WildlifeVets to assist with the translocation of two sub-adult lionesses from a reserve in Limpopo, The Bateleurs sprang into action. The reserve’s carrying capacity for lions had been exceeded as a result of the drought and population increase. Euthanasia was unfortunately the only alternative to translocation. An urgent call for a pilot was sent out and Jaco Scheepers volunteered to fly the lionesses from Hoedspruit civil airfield to a temporary, specialised isolation boma in KwaZulu-Natal. From there they would be transported to Mozambique to form part of a greater re-introduction of lions to Moamba Game Reserve. On the morning of 8 June, Dr Joel Alves and Dr Ben Muller from WildlifeVets made their way to a reserve in Limpopo, in the greater Hoedspruit area, where they were met by Zelda de Keijzer, General Manager of the Bateleurs, and the reserve’s warden. The two young lionesses in the boma appeared to be more interested in playing with the bait and chasing each other around than in eating it, which made darting them fun and games. After about an hour the two young ladies were fast asleep and were processed rapidly, with all their injections given and dart sites treated. They were transported by road with Joel in the back with them to ensure they remained asleep for the start of their journey. Hoedspruit Civil was teeming with photographers and excited

members of the community upon arrival. The lionesses, weighing approximately 110kg each, were loaded into the aircraft rapidly and efficiently thanks to all the willing hands. The aircraft, a C206, was off and away after a short radiocheck from Jaco and instructions to hang on to the lions so that they didn’t slide back during take-off. The flight went smoothly and the aircraft landed on Mkuze airstrip within two hours of departure. The lionesses needed a few top-ups and they happily slept throughout the flight. They arrived to the smiling faces of the receiving team and were off-loaded into

capable hands to complete the first section of their journey to Moamba. That evening it was reported that the lionesses had woken up smoothly from their immobilisation and were safely in their temporary new home. The next section of their journey will see their safe release in Moamba followed by them thriving there and establishing a new lion population. Thank you to all parties involved for your exceptional professionalism. Our thanks to Jaco Scheepers especially, for not only flying this mission but also for sponsoring the fuel, and to Martin den Dunnen who provided his aircraft.

World Heritage status for Barberton Mountains BARBERTON - The Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains in Mpumalanga have officially been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS) after being on the tentative list for a number of years. The mountain range contains some of the world’s best preserved, oldest and most diverse sequence of volcanic and sedimentary rock, dating back 3.5 billion years. The World Heritage Committee took the decision at its 42nd session in Manama, Bahrain, in late June. This is the tenth South African site to be inscribed by the world heritage body since the country became a member in 1997. The project was put forward for nomination in 2009 as part of the efforts to conserve the natural inheritance and to boost tourism in the province, according to the Department of Eco-

nomic Development and Tourism for Mpumalanga. The MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism for the region, Sikhumbuzo Kholwane, said that the inscription of the Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains would be a constant reminder of the value of nature and its connection to

the people. ‘We have been afforded a single most compelling reason to preserve all natural endowments so that future generations can also experience the connection that we have with our mountains, our wetland and many other unique geological inheritances found in the province,’ he emphasised.

Great South African corporate support! HOEDSPRUIT - DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage wants to acknowledge the support they received from generous South African corporates. L’OREAL donated some beauty and body care products. They will be given to the children who come to DAKTARI as a reward after their accomplishment of the week. It is a wonderful way to encourage them and to learn about hygiene. The leader of the Pet Industry, Marltons, donated some products such as water bottles, dishes, and games. This will contribute to the good care and enrichment of our animals. The Rotary Club of Middleburg donated stationary and school furniture for DAKTARI and the schools we are working with. All have been received with a lot of gratitude. A leading food producer, RCL FOOD, donated Maize meal, flour and peanut butter which are all part of the children’s meals. The directors Ian and Michele Merrifield commented: ‘These donations not only reduce our day to day running costs but also shows the enthusiasm of our local corporates toward the protection

of the environment and the work we are doing with the community. Emotionally and psychologically, as Directors and leaders of a team, we

GREATER KRUGER Martial eagles are classified as “Vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List of threatened species, because of the suspected drop in numbers across much of their African range. Locally within South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland the species is classified as ‘Endangered’, as here the decrease is even more worrying. In South Africa, it has been estimated that there could be up to 800 pairs of this magnificent eagle, but recent findings by researchers at the University of Cape Town’s FitzPatrick Institute of Ornithology suggest that their numbers have gone down by up to 60% over the last 20 years. This is also the case inside the Kruger National Park, the largest protected area in the country, where the estimated loss in population is as high as 54%. These declines are very worrying and highlight the need for increased conservation efforts to save large raptors. In response to these declines, the FitzPatrick Institute of Ornithology set up The Martial Eagle Project in 2013. It is now run in collaboration with the

Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Birds of Prey Programme and a registered SANParks project. The project aims to help us understand the threats faced by the martial eagles and how these threats can lead to their loss. The project focuses in particular on the declines seen within Kruger, where species are usually expected to be most protected. This research is important to help us understand the role of protected areas and to understand the specific threats and the environmental requirements for the conservation of martial eagles. At the outset of the project, it was thought that one possible reason for the population declines was the increased mortality of immature martial eagles outside of protected areas, as inexperienced birds were known to range into areas with increased human pressures. This would cause a reduction in the number of adult birds in the breeding population in Kruger. The good news is that contrary to

this supposition, GPS tracking data collected since 2013 did not find evidence for low survival during these early life stages despite ranging widely beyond protected area boundaries. However, through GPS tracking of adult birds and nest monitoring, two possible factors that may be contributing to the loss of populations have been found: low adult survival and poor breeding productivity. Adult mortalities, including from persecution and collisions with power lines during unexpected wideranging movements outside of Kruger, might be a major factor contributing to population decline. The poor breeding productivity recorded by the project since 2013 comes in two forms: both a lower than average number of pairs trying to breed, and low success of those pairs which do try. The project has recently been installing time-lapse cameras at nests, which will record the actual causes of nest failure. Cameras are currently installed at active nests, and at the end of the breeding season in November they will be recovered so we can learn something more about this year’s nesting attempts. Alongside this, the project is continuing to follow the movements and survival of individual eagles in Kruger using GPS tracking. In order to conserve a species we need to understand its requirements, how it interacts with the environment and the threats that it faces. The information gathered by the Martial Eagle Project will contribute to the goal of long-term conservation of this wide-ranging top predator. Want to find out more? Follow the project’s Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/ MartialEagleConservation/

MICA - When Hoedspruit was merely a collection of farms, Mica was the thriving centre of the region. The trading store started in the 1890s, and Mica continued as the local hub long into the following century. Molly Lowe bought the trading post from her father in the mid 1960’s, and together with her husband Arthur developed Mica Village. In its heyday Mica had a post office and telephone exchange, a general dealer, a butcher and a petrol station. The trading post was thriving in the 40’s to 80’s as the only one available to the 800 – 1000 people working in the mines at the time. The petrol station was eventually closed by Shell in the 90’s, and, as many of the smaller mines closed, Mica Village was gradually left behind by the fast growing Hoedspruit.

Things to do this holiday HOEDSPRUIT - Did you know about these hidden gems near Hoedspruit? Have you seen the Kadishi Tufa Waterfall on the Blyde dam, within the third largest canyon in the world? The Blyde Canyon Nature Reserve is on the doorstep of Hoedspruit. View the Thee Rondavels and the Kadishi Tufa waterfall, on one of our boat trips on the Blyde dam. Relax and unwind while the boat cruises towards the most beautiful spot in South Africa. Winter time is good for spotting the crocodiles on the sandbanks where they are catching some Hoedspruit sunshine while a fish eagle calls out to his mate. Blyde Adventure also offer paintball, kloofing, quad bike trails, micro-light flights and hot air balloon rides. Quad bike trails are situated in Franklyn Park at the foothills of the Mariepskop Mountain. Three forest trails of varying difficulty take you through mountainous wilderness with breath-taking views. 67 bird species have been listed, and you might come across species such as the Narina trogon and Knysna turaco, making the trails a bird and nature lover’s paradise. In 1995 the Gelletich family bought Mica Village from the Lowes, and spent over R1m trying to restore it to its former glory. The family ran it for some time, and although the general store closed around 2004, the coffee shop, tavern, accommodation and curio shop kept turning over. The Gelletich family are firmly a part of the history of the area. Dr John Gelletich and his wife Catherine had been asked to start the mining operations and prospecting in Phalaborwa in 1938 by Hans Merenski, and their son Gionni was the first white male child in Phalaborwa. The family made their mark in the mining industry, providing the South African industry with 80% of its demand for mica, feldspar and silica. In recent years Mica Village was dormant until the Gelletich family decided to give it a new lease of life, in the belief that a heritage site of such im-

portance should be treasured and enjoyed by everybody. Andrie Buys recently took over the coffee shop and pub, and welcomes you for a delicious meal or to sample his wonderful selection of cakes in the beautiful surroundings of the village. He also sells his hand made glass articles in the adjacent gallery where other local artists can also exhibit their work. The gallery is a multi-functional space

which can be converted into a conference venue or a private function room for a special occasion. The accommodation at Mica Village has also been updated, but the buildings are old and the architecture would be destroyed by too much modernisation. The 40’s and 50’s style and old charm have been retained; the rooms are simple and comfortable, and also affordable. Mica Village is less

than an hour’s drive from the Kruger National Park, and an ideal place to stop over. The village has also been revitalised by the presence of Elephants Alive. Developing the village as a scientific and intellectual centre for use by academic institutions is an aspiration of the Gelletich family, and having the Elephants Alive head office on site is a fulfilment of that dream. The organisation utilises office and accommodation space to facilitate several researchers in their field. Further plans to enhance the Mica Village experience include monthly events of wildlife presentations or films for those who are interested. Mica Village is not just a heritage site worth preserving, but a beautiful oasis well worth a visit, and it’s now definitely open to visitors!

IoDSA’s training session with K2CBR Godding & Godding sunscreen SPF 40

Lucky Rapitsi HOEDSPRUIT - On 2 July 2018 the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region board, K2C GEF Stewardship facilitator, SANparks and conservationists, Mopani District Municipality and LEDET attended a training session on corporate governance. The training was facilitated by Joe Lesejane from the Institute of Directors Southern Africa (IoDSA) at the K2C BR office. IoDSA is a professional body representing all entities entrusted with governance du-

ties. They are also the custodians of all the King Reports on good governance. The purpose of the training was to be able to properly establish the key role of a board of directors, establishing corporate governance challenges in the 21st century, going through Kruger To Canyons strategic risks and using governance as a way to ensure sustainability. K2C BR stewardship facilitator Shoki Mafogo had the privilege of attending the training session and she said ‘The training was very effec-

tive, we learned a lot about the King I, II, III and IV reports, and the term “conflict of interest” was broadly explained in the context of corporate governance’. ‘We also learned how to avoid certain challenges as a board governing structure such as political interference, deterioration of ethics’ Shoki concluded. IoDSA membership community represents prestigious and diverse South African business leaders, providing a unique opportunity for learning, networking and support in all sectors.

FOOD FAIR

Sunday 22 July from 10am to 3pm - Come hungry and enjoy a fun day out -

HOEDSPRUIT - Godding & Godding are excited to announce that they have finally introduced their new SPF 40 Sunscreen Lotion. The sunscreen is enriched with the anti-oxidant properties of vitamins A, C and E, as well as having the numerous benefits of pure silk and the soothing qualities of Bulbinella plant extract. The formulation has been care-

fully created for Godding & Godding by sun and skin care experts who have successfully eliminated, where possible, the cocktail of hazardous chemicals usually found in most sunscreens while ensuring maximum skin care and protection from sun exposure. The main UV blocking ingredient in the sun cream product is rutile (titanium dioxide) and zin-

cite (zinc oxide). Both are naturally occurring clay-like mineral components of most soil. Thanks to the advent of nanotechnology, the minerals leave a transparent coating on your skin, ensuring broad spectrum UV A and UV B sun protection, without white streaks and marks on your body or clothes. Other organic UV absorbent chemicals are added for their water resistant qualities, but the usage has been kept to a minimum in order to provide you with as natural a product as is possible, while still protecting you from sun exposure. The sunscreen base is a vitamin enriched moisturizing cream, giving added benefit by providing after sun skin nourishing effects. The Godding & Godding policy is to have as few chemicals as possible, to stick with their philosophy of as natural as possible. They have been very particular in creating a light and non-greasy sunscreen so as to encourage young teenagers to wear sunscreen and not worry about a possible pimple breakout. The sunscreen is formulated to be hypoallergenic and is fine for daily use, safe to use on babies, and has been approved by CANSA. You can buy your sunscreen lotion from Godding & Godding at the Rock Fig Center, 24 Degrees South, G&G Dullstroom, G&G Lifestyle Garden Center JHB or order it online - Goddingandgodding.com

SCS 2019 Namibia Cricket Tour

NAMIBIA - Southern Cross Schools are excited to be taking their College cricket first teams (boys and girls) on tour to Namibia in September 2019. Both teams consist of talented players and have a history of achieving amazing results! In 2016, the boys’ team was undefeated in the U19C league and was rewarded by

being fast-tracked to the U19A league. In 2017, they were again unbeaten, with their final game sadly not played due to calendar logistics. The girls’ team also performed exceptionally well in 2016 - they played in the U19A Limpopo league of which they were champions! In 2017, the girls succeeded to the finals, losing to Petersburg

High School but managing to attain runner up status for the Limpopo U19A league. Regardless of the scoreboard, our teams will always be successful because of the time, effort and hard work put into training and every game. As a team, they are committed to one other and approach all elements of the game as one. We are certain that while on tour in

Namibia, they will portray this spirit, passion and camaraderie and do Southern Cross Schools proud. We are deeply appreciative of everyone’s help throughout our fundraising efforts to get our teams to Namibia in 2019. There are many more fundraising events planned and we hope for continued assistance and support.

Kruger2Canyon 2018 – 2 day stage trail race KAMPERSRUS – Things are hotting up on the mountain in anticipation of the Kruger2Canyon 2018 two day stage trail race. In 2015 and 2016 the Kruger2Canyon trail race was hosted under the Wild Series banner. In 2017 it was hosted by KZN Trail Running and Kruger2Canyons Biosphere successfully, and has quickly earned itself iconic status on

the South African Trail Running Scene. The route offers an incredible opportunity to explore the most northern reaches of the Drakensberg, in and around the Blyde River Canyon, as well as the bushveld adjacent to the Kruger National Park. The Blue Canyon Conservancy, in which the second stage is laid out, has all of the Big 5 except buffalo within

its bounds. In 2016 a number of runners got to view African Wild Dog while on route, whereas in 2017 a herd of elephants watched on as the runners made their way along the course. For an exceptional South African trail running experience, make sure you enter Kruger2Canyon 2018, taking place on 14 and 15 July 2018 (Registration takes place on 13 July)
