100 Cyclists Ride 100 km in the 4th Annual Rotary K2C Cycle Tour Lovelle Henderson ONLY IN HOEDSPRUIT – ‘We take a limited field of 100 cyclists through 100km of Big 5 safari reserves in the Kruger to Canyon Biosphere area around Hoedspruit’, says Wilna Mew, President of Hoedspruit Rotary, who are the organisers of the annual event. The cyclists, many of whom have participated in all previous events, are organised into five pelotons of twenty cyclists. Each peloton is accompanied by two armed guides (local rangers who volunteer their services) on their bikes, carrying enough ammunition to stop an elephant or anything else; a support rider at the back; and finally a support vehicle bringing up the rear of each peloton. Very strictly, and for obvious safety reasons, the group has to ride closely together and are only able to go as fast as the guides up front allow. It is a tour, not a race after all, and so the peloton moves as fast as they feel that it is safe to ride, looking out ahead for potential game or problems. Should the cyclists ride into anything that is feeling a little ‘grumpy’, the guides need to be able to stop the group quickly, keep everyone together and take whatever precautions are necessary as a single group. In addition, local GP Dr Scheepers moves back and forth between pelotons to ensure that everyone is happy and well hydrated. The riders feel very privileged to be given the opportunity to ride in such a pristine area through Timbavati, Thorny-
Mark Lotwis Ryan Thomson and Tim Parker seen heading up one of the pelotons of riders in the annual Kruger 2 Canyon Cycle Tour 2018.
bush, Kapama and Blue Canyon reserves. Each peloton is accompanied by a dedicated photographer ensuring that every exciting and eventful moment is captured during the tour. This year’s tour was very successful and all the pelo-
tons had a number of elephant and buffalo sightings, while two of the pelotons were fortunate enough to see rhino females with their calves. There is always lovely relaxed game along the route such as impala, warthog, zebra, giraffe, hippos and the
occasional crocs. The breakfast stop is hugely popular and operated by Rotary Haenertsburg, who this year produced scrumptious fresh scrambled egg and avocado pear rolls with lamb sausage in the middle of the bush.

The cyclists once again all immensely enjoyed the experience, and left the field raving about every minute of the day, despite some of them having spent 11 hours in the saddle. Once again Rotary Hoedspruit successfully reached
their fundraising goals towards new club social upliftment projects for the coming year, and a tidy contribution to each of the four reserves’ anti-poaching funds. The 2019 tour takes place on Saturday 20 July and booking opens in September 2018.

HOEDSPRUIT - Anton is considered the father of Afrikaans rock with a music career spanning six decades. Hoedspruit is just about to host this
legendary musician at the Rhino Convention Centre on 11 August 2018 at 7pm. In 1963, Goosen was expelled from boarding school after being
caught in a bath playing guitar and smoking. His guitar was confiscated and its case filled with bricks. Despite this, Anton persevered and formed his high school’s first rock band that same year. Goosen wrote the music for 2 movies which he directed ‘n Brief vir Simone and Sing vir die Harlekyn (1980) He also wrote the theme music for Die Laaste Tango (2013), ‘n Pawpaw vir my Darling (2016) and Seimbamba (Lullaby) (2017). HOEDSPRUIT – There have been numerous letters and articles published in the early days of Kruger2Canyon (around 2003 to 2004) about the signage clutter that existed along the access roads leading into Hoedspruit. The end result was that official help was called in and all the excess signs were removed. Hoedspruit has grown enormously since those days and suddenly the complaints about signage are beginning to surface again, as the road verges become more and more stacked with signage once again. Patrick Green of Joburg Online has posted a video of himself removing his own sign, in protest to the number of signs up in town, calling his protest: #signsmustfall. Kruger2Canyon invites you to send us your opinions and photographs or videos, of signs in and around the Hoedspruit area. AFB Hoedspruit receives Opening of Moletele packhouse freedom of entry to town
HOEDSPRUIT - On 21 July, soldiers from Air Force Base Hoedspruit marched through the street of Hoedspruit to receive a key /certificate as a symbol of entry to Hoedspruit town from the Mayor of Maruleng Municipality, Councillor Happy Thobejane. Anton Nel, Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) and Master Warrant Officer (MWO) says that the Freedom of the Town Parade is an ancient honour granted to military/ martial organisations allowing them the privilege to march into the town with drums beating, colours flying and carrying rifles. It dates back to ancient Rome, which regarded the boundary of the City/Town, as sacred. Promagistrates and Generals were forbidden from entering it, but an exception was made for victory celebrations. Government soldiers lost their status when entering, and weapons were also banned inside the boundary. This tradition is still practised in United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and in South Africa. The freedom of the town parade coincided with the 40th anniversary of the Base, which was opened on 1 July 1978. The Mayor of Maruleng Municipality commended members of Air Force Base Hoedspruit for their unwavering support of the Municipality and for their countless successes in humani-
HOEDSPRUIT - On 26 July, Department of Rural Development and Land Reform officials in Limpopo visited farms owned and operated by Dinaledi Farming Enterprises (Pty) Ltd, a 50/50 joint venture between the strategic partner, New Vision Farming Trust and the Moletele Communal Property Association (CPA). The venture started in October 2008, and consists of three farming units, totalling 700ha, of which 500.5 ha are under intensive citrus cultivation under the Blyde River Irrigation Scheme. The executive and elders of the Moletele CPA attended the event which included the grand opening of a new pack house, which was completed in March this year at a cost of over R38 mil-
lion. The farms have employed 887 people this year, including 311 people in the packing facility. Many of these workers are members and beneficiaries of the Moleteli CPA. The Department has spent R255m on acquiring and restoring 7,000 hectares of prime citrus and eco-tourism land through the restitution programme on behalf of the Moletele Community. The land boasts some of the best citrus, mango and vegetable produce which is being exported. The CPA executive committee showcased the farming successes to the department and other neighbouring CPAs as another success story of land restitution. Chief Lickson Abuti Chiloane from the Moletele tribe cut the red ribbon for the grand opening of the pack house. The com-
pany Remoon (Pty) Ltd SA, who supplied the state of the art packing equipment was represented by Pierneef Smit. The business has developed 60ha of highly sought after Late Mandarins, and also boasts over 220 ha of lemons in its varietal mix. In total the business has over 500 ha of citrus, with over a million cartons exported in 2017. According to Martin Mentis, MD of Dinaledi Farming Enterprises, “What is most commendable, is that the expansion of 169 ha in citrus orchards and new varieties, the investment in this new facility and new technology has all been achieved without the assistance of Government grants or other institutional finance and programmes.” This is truly a success story for Land Transformation for the region and the country.

The Mayor urged all the stakeholders within the Municipality to join hands and work together as a team in order to achieve more. She made a plea for all to emulate the work done and legacy left by Madiba. Let us make every day a Mandela Day; we should not wait for July each year to show compassion and care. She also thanked all who were behind the scene in ensuring that the parade went well, including Officer Commanding Air Force Base Hoedspruit, Colonel Jingles Kereeditse,

Powerful Mandela Month at Hlokomela
Desiré Wright HOEDSPRUIT – Never mind only 67 minutes to make an impact and start changing the world in the name of Nelson Mandela. In celebration of what would have been Madiba’s 100th birthday this year, Hlokomela was blessed with local men, women and children donating hours, and some even days, of their time to lend us a helping hand. Over the course of a few days in July, would-be philanthropists from Hoedspruit and abroad overhauled some of Hlokomela’s gardens and painted and fixed just about everything that was in need of repair at the Hlokomela Main Clinic and Hlokomela Market. Amber and Tansy,
two students from the UK, also spoilt our staff and the children at Richmond Crèche with delicious cupcakes. In conjunction with Rotary Club Hoedspruit, Hlokomela hosted a very successful outreach at Kgoana High School in Mabins A Village. We reached more than 300 girls and created awareness amongst them about breast cancer, feminine hygiene and gender based violence. We are overwhelmed by the generosity we have received this year! The spirit of Madiba is indeed alive and strong in this special community. Thank you to each and every one who made Mandela Day 2018 (and Month!) so powerful for us here at Hlokomela. Thank you to Southern Cross

The young photographers range in age from 17 to 25 years and are mentored by the programme’s founder and director Mike Kendrick. Wild Shots Outreach aims to engage young people from local communities in wildlife and conservation through photography. Wisani Ngwenya, Vusi Mathe, Rifumo Mathebula and Thulani Nghonyama are all graduates of the Wild Shots Outreach schools programme. They have continued to study and practise their photography with donated second-hand cameras. They have started a mini-enterprise providing photographic services in Ludlow and formed a conservation organisation called Protect and Conserve in White City. The young photographers were keen to get “down and dirty” and “high and mighty” to capture the intrepid cyclists from a range of angles and to provide the best images possible of this amazing event. Thanks to Hoedspruit Rotary for organising the event, to Kapama for allowing access to their section of the tour, and to Sharon Haussman of Khaki Fever for allowing the team to photograph at her water point. www.wildshotsoutreach.org

Bushveld Bird Club gets counting
KLASERIE - On Monday 30 July 2018, 16 members of the Bushveld Bird Club went to the Klaserie Dam for the 1st ever CWAC count on the dam. Co-ordinated WAterbird Count (CWAC) forms part of the citizen scientist projects undertaken
by members of the public and members of bird clubs throughout South Africa. The information which is gathered is then sent to the ADU (Animal Demographic Unit) of the University of Cape Town who use all the bits of data to map South Af-
rican’s biodiversity over time. Counts are done twice a year, one in summer and one in winter. The ADU provide the necessary list of birds that are included in the count, and the records are kept for each count and notes made of what birds are breed-
ing, and if the numbers increase or decrease year on year. Other CWAC’s in the area include the Swadini Dam which is undertaken by the Mpumalanga Parks Board. The Bushveld Bird Club arranged four teams; three teams walked on the western shoreline of the dam and one team used a small boat to count the inaccessible areas on the eastern shoreline. 25 different species on the CWAC list were recorded. The Bushveld Bird Club would like to thank Hannes Potgieter of Klaserie Dam for allowing the club to do the count, Carl Van Den Berg from Ndabushi Bushveld Retreat for supplying the boat and Louwtjie Roux for giving the club access to the dam at the Klaserie Caravan Park for the refreshments after the count.

Seventh Eco Village opens Many years at Motswari Kerstin Nyberg Peart
ACORNHOEK - The nonprofit organisation Eco Children recently completed yet another Eco Village at a local school and handed over the facility to Mapalane Primary School at a colourful and joyous occasion. This is the seventh Eco Village established by Eco Children as they strive to build communities while building foundations for the future. The Eco Village consists of an Eco Garden where senior learners will plant and grow vegetables to contribute to the school’s feeding scheme; and an Eco Classroom, where learners will receive ecologybased lessons. The Eco Village project has proved successful at six other primary schools in the region and thousands of children and teachers have benefited from this drive. The programme is sponsored by the Make a Difference Leadership Foundation, Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, Classic Wallabies Indigenous Exchange (CWIE), Australian Volunteers International and the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. This year another six indigenous Australian volunteers travelled to Hoedspruit to help build the facility. Corné Havenga, CEO of Eco Children, said she was impressed
as always by the willingness and hard work of the young Australians. Project Manager Robert le Brun was also full of praise for everyone involved and said: ‘So much was achieved in such a small space of time. To be a part of a project that makes a genuine sustainable difference is so special.’ Comments from the CWIE volunteers were overwhelmingly positive, and it was clear that a feeling of ubuntu was established during their short visit. Said CWIE volunteer, Alkira Edwards: ‘I’ve met the most beautiful and strongest people and have been so inspired by each and every one, working with the community has been nothing but fun and I have loved every moment of it.’ Another volunteer, Leilani Knight echoed her feelings and
said her visit was nothing short of life-changing. ‘I found that I was deeply moved by the people here and as I came to learn more about them and their history, I gained an empathy for them.’ Now that the infrastructure is complete, the local community will take ownership of the project as they plant and grow vegetables in the gardens under the guidance of the Eco Children team. Almost 4,000 learners and community members will benefit from the Eco Village programme at six schools in 2018, and this number is set to grow even more as more schools are adopted and more Eco Villages built. For more info on this project or to find out more about Eco Children’s activities in the area and how you can get involved, please contact corne@ecochildren.co.za.

TIMBAVATI - There must be something special about a game lodge where a quarter of the staff have been employed for over fifteen years. Motswari Private Game Reserve recently held a special awards ceremony to celebrate their 17 longestserving members of staff - four for 25 years, eight for 20 years and five for 15 years - a testament to an atmosphere where owners, managers and staff are as one family. The familyowned camp has been in operation since 1976; it was purchased in 1979 by Paul Geiger and has been a “family love affair” ever since, now into its third generation. Passing the Motswari heritage from one generation to the next has always been at the heart of this reserve. Godfrey Mathebula has been at Motswari for 20 years, and is intrinsic to the Motswari family; his story is deeply rooted in the camp. His parents looked after the Geigers’ original property in the Timbavati, Java, and he was born and raised there. Godfrey assisted his father with duties around the camp, and worked in the workshop at Motswari’s main camp after school. Being a guide was what Godfrey really wanted, and he spent hours studying late at night and eventually became a qualified guide. He excelled in the role, and made it to the top eight in the FGASA Guide of the Year competition in 2011. Godfrey is now Assistant General Manager and an immeasurable asset to the team; a core figure in the Motswari family. Happy Sibuyi, who works in the laundry, started in December 1993 and is among the longest serving staff members. Those were exciting times everywhere in South Africa, Motswari not excepted. Happy remembers how the lodge management arranged for all their staff to be taken to vote for the first time in April the following year. A taxi took them to Hoedspruit in the morning where they joined the long queues. Ephraim Marule, who started in 1993 fixing vehicles in the workshop, also remembers how the voting process was explained to them in advance as first time voters, so they were confident to do the right thing on the day. Ephraim has since moved to work in maintenance, and enjoys both working in the bush and the friendly atmosphere and feeling of being appreciated by owners and management. Happy is indeed happy work-

ing at Motswari. She has brought up two children since she started work there, and until they reached school age they were allowed to stay with her in the staff accommodation. Older children can stay with their parents – or even grandparents - during school holidays, and it was a turning point in the life of Grace Mnisi when she visited her grandfather, then head chef at the lodge. She was given a temporary job in the kitchen, and with one thing leading to another, after 20 years at Motswari she is now herself the head chef, both for the main camp and the smaller private Geiger’s Camp. Grace has been headhunted by many other lodges but she stays at Motswari. She is comfortable there, and she feels deep gratitude to the owners and management. She says that she grew up in a very poor family, but is no longer poor; she is now able to look after her family – all thanks to the people at Motswari who gave her a chance. Lisbeth Manyike and Ina Nziyane have worked for 25 and 20 years, respectively, at the lodge, and have experience of most aspects of housekeeping. Lisbeth is very happy working there, and especially happy with the management; she says that “if the management is not good, guests won’t come”, and the occupation rates prove her point. Difference Hlophe started his career at Motswari in maintenance in 1999, but has tried being both a waiter and a barman. He soon discovered that what he really wanted was working close to nature, and trained to be a tracker. His tracking career didn’t start well, as during his
first week he was nearly attacked by a leopard. With two guests in the vehicle, he spotted leopard tracks and together with the guide started to track on foot. They certainly found the leopard as it came running towards them, ready to attack! Difference says that his instinct told him to run, but the guide told him to face the leopard which turned around and ran away, and Difference lived to tell the tale. Being a gardener at Motswari is not quite the same as being a gardener in a town: this is what Cyril Makhubela has discovered during his 15 years at the lodge. He started in the workshop but was soon moved to the garden, where part of his job is to chase away elephants and warthogs. Like Difference, he’s had a too-close-for-comfort encounter with a wild animal, when the elephant he was trying to chase away followed him to his house and started hitting the door with his trunk. Animals notwithstanding, Cyril stays at Motswari because he ‘just enjoys his work’! Godfrey, Happy, Ephraim, Grace, Lisbeth, Ina, Difference and Cyril all feel part of the Motswari family. When the owners visit, they know each staff member by name and greet them with smiles and hugs. The managers have changed, but have all been good, and the long-serving staff members remember the training courses at different levels – including basic literacy – arranged by Kathy Bergs when she and her husband Steve were managers. There is no doubt that they are happy at Motswari, as their combined 170 years of service bear evidence!

67 Minutes Sterna Marx
HOEDSPRUIT - On Wednesday, 18 July 2018, Hoërskool Hoedspruit High School embarked on the school’s first ’67 minutes for Mandela’ venture. The school make use of the Drakensig Sport Complex during the year. The Principal and staff thought it a good gesture to return the favour by spending the 67 minutes of goodwill, cleaning up the sport grounds and surrounding areas and to fill 67 refuse bags – 12 learners were chosen by merits. Lt. Col. Philip
Oosthuizen (SAAF) hearty welcomed the helpers. He emphasized the importance of the impact of Mandela Day and that these learners were an example to the community. He continued that this service was for this generation and the next and that Nelson Mandela had an enormous love for children. This help – cleaning up the area- creates awareness of the important role that the surrounding area plays in our society. Without this kind of initiatives our town and environment would not maintain its beauty and legacy.

HOEDSPRUIT - Come and join HALO in our most innovative and unusual fundraising campaign yet! Villiers Steyn of Vision Photography will be placing camera traps on Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate for the whole of August. Each time a camera’s sensor is triggered, a photo will be taken, and the animal’s identity revealed. You can support HALO by choosing one or more species from a list, and pledge your sponsorship. For every animal of “your” species that is photographed, you donate the agreed sum. Your total donation will be calculated at the end of August by multiplying the number of camera trap photos taken of your species
(the number of individual animals in the photo doesn’t matter) by the “price” from the list. The ‘price’ varies from R5 for impala to R2000 for pangolin – a species never caught on a camera trap in HWE before! For the complete list, please see the HALO Facebook page, https://www.facebook. com/Hoedspruit.HALO/. Pledge your support and book your species either on Facebook or by emailing hoedspruit.halo@gmail.com. HALO recently joined the Mandela Day celebrations by trying to raise 67 bags of dog food. The target wasn’t just reached, but exceeded: 75 bags of dog food were donated! A big Thank You to all our wonderful supporters and followers!

Bringing hope and food security on Mandela Day MADIBA DAY - Each year on 18 July, Mandela Day encourages South Africans to put aside 67 minutes of their day to give back to society. The goal, however, is far greater: to instil a sense of community and selflessness in the everyday lives of South Africans, to uphold the legacy of Madiba. This year the efforts of Southern Cross College definitely honoured Madiba’s love of community and the environment, as we spent our 67 minutes planting vegetable seeds in our school food garden. We used old newspaper and toilet rolls to shape small seedling containers that, when ready, can be planted directly into the ground. 2,500 seeds were planted, but thanks to generous parents, we received enough seeds to repeat this another five times! Once the seeds germinate and are ready to be planted, we will hand over the seedlings to Trygive Nxumalo, from A
Spring of Hope. Trygive assists a number of NGOs in the Acornhoek area, and his speciality is permaculture. His energy, passion and enthusiasm are remarkable, so we hope our donation will assist him to establish a few more household food gardens (we are eager to help!). It was also fantastic to have
our German Exchange visitors involved in the seed planting. They had had the opportunity to spend a day with Mr Nxumalo in his personal garden, as well as visit three homes that he supports. Thanks to all the learners and staff who put in the effort to give back to our greater community!

Graeme has a passion for English and when asked why he decided to become a teacher after exploring many other career options his response was: ‘I have always been fascinated by people’s ideas, and I love engaging with others, whether in discussion or through books or films, to try and understand and question their point of view, ideas, arguments, or opinions. For me, that along with the effective communication of those ideas, is what English is all about. Through teaching I get to share this interest with others, and hopefully pass on a similar love of critical thinking and creativity and the various ways it is communicated.’ Southern Cross College is very excited to welcome these two gentlemen onto the staff, a great team, a great school and a great community!

Drakie mini-sport day a huge success! Wouter Vos
HOEDSPRUIT – On Saturday, 28 July 2018, Drakensig Primary School hosted our an-
nual Mini-hockey and Minicricket. Schools around the district were represented. It was a pleasure to see u/6 boys and girls participating in their first
hockey and cricket matches. It was a most enjoyable day supported by many parents. Thank you to Thea Lombaard, Mellanie Wright and Wouter Vos for
organising this event as well as all the teachers, staffmembers and parents of Drakensig who worked very hard to ensure a successful event.
(CMD) when he was two and a half years old. This means he cannot run, jump, walk, stand, climb or crawl… everyday actions that most of us take for granted and see as a given, he may never be able to do. CMD is a group of muscle diseases that occur at birth (congenital) or during early infancy. There is currently no cure for CMD. However, this condition has not hindered Daniël’s
cognitive ability or his playful spirit. This certainly presents many challenges because of his physical limitations, but his family tries to help him do just about anything, going above and beyond to help him to be involved and have fun! Thankfully the support for Daniël has been amazing by family, friends, his school and teachers, the Lowveld community, and sometimes Godsent angels….
To help the family give Daniël as normal a life as possible, and at the same time improve his mobility, make his life a little easier and avoid medical complications, a special trust has been set up for him. The aim of the trust is to fund the equipment he needs as medical aids cover very little to none of his equipment or treatments. The goal is to generate money for his needs through fundraisers. One of these fundraisers is Daniël’s Lion Heart Challenge. It is an obstacle course race that will be held on Spring Day 1 September 2018 at the Blyde Adventure Camp. It is sure to be a breathtaking experience! Community involvement from local businesses has been overwhelming: thank you to the following businesses or individuals who have already played a vital role in the preparation of Daniëls Lion Heart Challenge: Blyde Adventure Camp, Hi-Q, Hoffman’s Thatching, Tshukudu Decking, Letaba Timbers, Hoedspruit Medical Rescue, Little Bush, Bundox Bush Camp, Blydevallei, Hoedspruit NTT Toyota, Leopardo Electrical, Pieter Papsdorf, Michael Dickerson, Jahara and Kruger2Canyon News.w. Come and share your Lion Heart on Saturday 1 September, like little Daniël does every day! Join us for a day of fun, friends, family, challenges and obstacles. The event will consist of a Little Hero Race of 400m with mini obstacles (4 – 10 years), a 5km race with ten obstacles for teams of 4 to 6 (11+ years), and a 10km race with 20 obstacles for individuals or teams of 2 or 4. Pre-registrations will be open until 29 August 2018. The event will start at 7am, but late registrations will be done on the day from 6am. All proceeds will go towards equipment for Daniël as well as other special needs children identified in the area with physical challenges. For more info visit www. entryninja.com/events/ event/31202 or Daniël’s Lion Heart Challenge’s Facebook page. Email: m.vanheerden2@ gmail.com or call 082 823 8414 for entry forms. #letsdothis

BLYDE ADVENTURE CAMP - This is the story of little Daniël Otto - a courageous, strong, happy little dude who wants nothing more than just to be one of the kids! Almost exactly two years ago, at the tender age of three, Daniël lost his ability to walk. He had been diagnosed with Congenital Muscular Dystrophy
