‘What’s your elephant’? Heidi Lee Smith HOEDSPRUIT – The guest speaker at Southern Cross Schools Founders Day was a great surprise for many locals who have known Alan McSmith for years, including myself. Going on Safari with Alan is one of the dreams on my lifetime bucket-list. So to hear him speak, see his images, including the world famous video of him calmly facing down a charging elephant, was just fantastic. Alan took the audience on a virtual safari that had the learners and visitors at Southern Cross focused on the subject of elephants and their innate intelligence, a subject that Alan has been observing and studying in detail for more than 30 years. Alan explained through his fascinating talk how ‘the more you understand nature, the more you will understand yourself’, and he spoke about the fears we all face, suggesting that we all have elephants in our lives, in the form of challenges we face daily. What a privilege is was to be in the audience! Cathan Moore, a learner at SCS, summed Alan up perfectly when thanking him: ‘Having grown up in the wilderness myself, I have been inspired by wilderness warriors like yourself to make a stand and fight for the last remaining natural places on this planet. My dad (Warren Moore) has known you for many years and when I asked him about you, he had this to say: ‘Alan is a man, one with nature, and a rare human being.’ He recalls you saying to him many years ago when you

were still managing Tanda Tula that if you could, you would close all the roads, take away the vehicles and only offer walking safaris to your guests. To limit our foot print on this planet was imprinted in your soul from the beginning. Your deep understanding for the need to conserve our wilderness is sadly rare in today’s world as society is driven by

egotistical desires. If we do not change our ways, there will not be a world that can support all that live on earth including our own species. Mr Smith, you can count on me to be there to take the baton onwards in the fight to protect our home, earth. I hope you all feel the same, this needs to be a team effort!’ ended Cathan earnestly.

‘Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges’ AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS - On 23 July 2018 Christine du Preez, director of the non-governmental health care organization Hlokomela, attended the 22nd International AIDS Conference. She was accompanied by M.J. du Preez, the organisation’s Media, Marketing and IGP (Income Generating Proj-

ects) Manager. The conference is the largest gathering on HIV and AIDS in the world. First convened during the peak of the AIDS epidemic in 1985, it continues to provide a unique forum for the intersection of science, advocacy, and human rights. The conference was an opportunity to strengthen policies and programmes that ensure an evidence-based response to the AIDS epidemic. The conference also served as a focal point to intensify political and financial commitments to AIDS. With this year’s theme being ‘Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges’, Christine and M.J. attended the conference in the same spirit, meeting with role players, policymakers and funders in a bid to strengthen and amplify the fight against

the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Greater Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region. Hlokomela presented two posters on research and prevention programmes conducted at Hlokomela on the subject of cervical cancer in farm and sex workers in the Hoedspruit area. The Hlokomela team attended multiple sessions on various topics, but one theme that was echoed by many of the speakers was that there is one front where we are losing the fight against HIV/AIDS, with South Africa topping the list: the fight against new infections in youth, particularly young girls. Girls aged 14-18 years make up 25% of all new infections in SA, despite the fact that they only represent 10% of the total population. Although there are compli-

cated factors playing a role in this high number, the main culprit is the ‘Blesser’ or ‘Sugar daddy’ phenomenon, where young girls seek financial support in the arms of older men. Communities in the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region need to take action against this phenomenon. Through strong partnerships with other organisations in the area, as well as with Government, we at Hlokomela are ready for the task as we aim for an even better response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Thank you to each and every individual, business and organisation for your continued support of Hlokomela and in particular to everyone who made this trip possible. For more information on Hlokomela, please visit www. hlokomela.org.za.

Chamber of Commerce on Signage in the Hoed Dear K2C

As the Municipal Portfolio Chairperson for the Hoedspruit Chamber of Commerce, I would like to comment on your article last week. I would be grateful if you could publish my response. You and I have been on a mission going back many years regarding excessive signage in town. The Chamber has, until recently, tried to meet with the Municipality on a regular basis. Signage has been on the list of points for discussion for at least

four years that our Chamber President can verify. Even during a meeting with the Limpopo Premier’s office, when that office was asked to intervene, promises were made by the acting MM to the effect that it would be ‘resolved’. In subsequent reports she states that it is being ‘attended to’. Actually, a quick analysis of whose signs are ‘legal and paid for’ as opposed to those that are not, should not take any competent person more than a few hours to ascertain. We are not even sure if a person has been tasked, let along carried out the quick survey! On the subject of signs, has anyone noticed the shabby state of the “Welcome to Hoedspruit” signs as one enters town? Two years ago, an undertaking was given to the Chamber that they

would be repaired. In the meeting with the Limpopo Premier’s office, the representative was told that “the material has been ordered”, in May. Then we heard that the material could not be paid for because someone had resigned and the signatures at the bank had not been changed in order to authorise the payment. As a Chamber we decided to escalate our growing concerns to President Ramaphosa’s office and he tasked the Premier’s office. It is the intention of the Chamber of Commerce to start highlighting the various issues that people may not be aware of that are going on in our amazing town – the hub of Limpopo Tourism and Agriculture. Thank you Joan Arnestad

Signage letter from 2004 Dear editor Let me tell you a story. It’s about tourism and this great natural resource of ours and how, well, read on.... ‘The year 2010. The Jones family has just landed at Johannesburg International Airport. Their long awaited African Safari is about to begin! As they collect their hired car Mr Jones asks the assistant whether they have a map of the Lowveld area and a route map of how to get there, perhaps?’ ‘Don’t worry,’ says the assistant, ‘you’ll find your way quite easily. Direction signs start at the airport exist!’ A little uncertainly the Jones’

set off. As they reach the exit they slow down, and then stop, in amazement. There are hundreds of sign boards, as far as the eye can see, each board with the same name of fifty or sixty lodges and B+B establishment from as far afield as Cape Town, Durban, Pofadder and Hoedspruit. After twenty minutes of reading signs they find a name they recognise: Aah, Baobab Lodge, Hoedspruit’! The next ten boards are filled with Hoedspruit lodges. They follow the direction arrows. At each intersection the same process is repeated, speeded up now in the knowledge that each area’s boards are grouped together. By...continued on pg7...

Timbavati Officially Welcomes New Warden TIMBAVATI - The Timbavati Private Nature Reserve is delighted to formally welcome their new Warden, Edwin Pierce, who joined them on 1 May 2018. Edwin wasted no time in sharing his energy, passion and valuable experience, and this has had an immediate positive impact on the management team and the reserve as a whole. Edwin holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Nature Conservation and a Master’s Degree in Environmental Management. Interestingly, he studied with Fundisele Mketemi, the CEO of South African National Parks, and has continued to forge valuable relationships with other key figures in the South African conservation network over the years. His career spans more than ten years in the Kruger Lowveld Conservation Network, mostly in the Sabi Sand Wildtuin, with work also undertaken in a section of the Kruger National Park neighbouring the Sabi Sands. Edwin began his time at Sabi Sands as the reserve ecologist, dealing with all of the environmental management issues of the reserve. In 2015, he was promoted to Infrastructure and Environment Manager – effectively fulfilling the role of an assistant warden for the Sabi Sands. One of the vital roles in which Edwin gained experience was that of reserve security. Added to this was his participation in the lowveld-wide reserve security network, which continues to grow today to protect the lowveld reserves from the ever-present threat of wildlife poaching. Edwin has contributed to many of the regional forums hosted by the Kruger National Park in collaboration with its private reserve partners on the

western side of the Greater Kruger. Edwin brings with him valuable experience in a wide variety of conservation and security disciplines, as well as a vital understanding of the importance of collaboration between the Kruger National Park and the private reserves that form a part of the Greater Kruger National Park. In his own words: ‘I have always wanted to work in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, ever since I experienced this incredible reserve, working as a conservation student in 2005. I have always kept in touch with the management,

Your total donation will be calculated at the end of August by multiplying the number of camera trap photos taken of your species by the ‘price’ from the list. The ‘price’ varies from R5 for

field rangers and general staff, and after every visit to the TPNR I felt like I left a little bit of myself behind. Finally, now I can honestly say that I feel that I am home.’ The Timbavati Private Nature Reserve is one of the original members of the Associated Private Nature Reserves (APNR). The APNR is comprised of the Timbavati, Klaserie, Umbabat, Balule and Thornybush Private Nature Reserves. Collectively these reserves represent 187 500 hectares of land dedicated to conservation, and they form an important western cluster of the Greater Kruger National Park.

Tammy’s art is an experience

HOEDSPRUIT - A must see when visiting the Hoedspruit area is the destination 24 Degrees South. A hidden gem of interesting things to see and do, situated 25km out of Hoedspruit, in the prime tourist region of the Blyde River Canyon, Moholoholo and the Blyde Dam. 24 Degrees South has an eclectic collection of classic cars and motorbikes, a silk factory,

good restaurants, a day spa and numerous shops selling truly unique hand crafted items. Not to mention the creative wall art, passionately painted by Tammy Godding. No wall at 24 Degrees is safe from Tammy, as you will see: her works of art are creatively scattered around the place. From a beautiful big butterfly, to the major rivers of Africa; an old windsurfer that was ‘pimped’ to a portion of a

VW beetle that was rescued at a scrap metal dump – Tammy has transformed the ordinary into the extraordinary. Her latest piece that has just been completed is an awesome, life size, Indian Scout motorcycle that can be viewed in the Classic Motorbike showroom. This piece has been done especially for her father, who kept saying the bike showroom needed a little ‘something’ on the walls. Tammy’s art passion began when she was tiny – she would draw for hours on end while other kids played with toys. She spent her entire school career at Southern Cross, where she began as a founding kid at the age of four. She did visual art at school and matriculated in 2015. Since then she has travelled parts of Europe, Indonesia and has spent a lot of time in Mozambique working for a marine biologist. Tammy has two passions in life – art and the environment. She is desperate to make a difference in this world environmentally and is currently doing her degree in Environmental Management through UNISA. She has also completed a few art commissions and whenever she is back home at 24 Degrees, she always looks forward to embarking on a new art project. More of her artwork may be seen on her Instagram account - @tammyrae_art. She is open to any work and may be contacted by email on info@24degreessouth.co.za.

Discovering art and nature Kerstin Nyberg Peart

MOHOLOHOLO - If you love nature, you will infuse this love into your work as an artist. This is certainly true of David Johnson, one of South Africa’s most popular chalk pastel artists, known for his bushveld scenes and wildlife paintings. He also imparts this love of the natural world to the students at his workshops. A tree is a living thing, and David teaches his students not only how to paint it but also about the tree itself, so it is not just an object but something which they truly understand. David is passionate about art

and wants to impart this passion to his students. He teaches on average two workshops every month, with a maximum of eight participants. He recently held a workshop at Moholoholo Mountain View, for the first time in our area. He is a selftaught professional artist whose preferred medium is soft pastels, and his paintings of wildlife, bushveld scenes and cattle have been exhibited throughout Southern Africa and as far afield as in Germany. The six keen participants at the Mountain View workshop spent their first day painting a knobthorn, and on the second day when K2C News visited

had moved on to a baobab. David teaches step by step as some of the participants are beginners, but even those who never held a brush before will go home with three paintings at the end of the workshop. So what did the participants think about it so far? The unanimous verdict was that they were having great fun, not only while being taught to paint, but the whole experience of staying at Moholoholo Mountain View: the food, the scenery, the peace and quiet. Everyone agreed when one of the participants, Cecilie Bertram, said ‘We want David to come back in November’!

What is happening to Maruleng’s water? Lucky Rapitsi HOEDSPRUIT – At a meeting hosted by the Association for Water and Rural Development (AWARD), water security in Maruleng was highlighted. Water resources in the region are under threat and the municipality is facing an increasingly precarious situation with greater water insecurity and growing inequity. Recent work by the Department of Water and Sanitation indicates that water consumption in the catchment area is extremely high and losses are in excess of 50% in some municipalities. All municipalities, including Maruleng, need to develop a Water Conservation and Water Demand Management (WCWDM) strategy to address potential water shortages, reduce losses and increase security of supply. AWARD invited residents of Hoedspruit and the surrounding area to a public meeting on what is happening to Maruleng’s water, and to an overview of water provision and water supply efficiency in Maruleng local municipality, at the Rhino convention centre on July 24th. Guest speaker was Willem Wegelin of WRP Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd. Willem Wegelin explained

that findings revealed extremely high water use in the Hoedspruit to Kampersrus area, with an average of 573 l per person per day, compared to the national average of 235 l, and that the average billed consumption is 84 m3 per month per account. Results indicate high water losses of 44.2% which is well above international standards for well-managed systems and the national average of 35.9%. The high non-revenue water and water losses suggest a lack of effective metering, reading, billing and cost recovery systems. WCWDM interventions will lead to a more sustainable and

reliable water supply and offer a great opportunity to create sustainable employment opportunities in the region. The strategy should eliminate the need for intermittent supply, which leads to major infrastructure problems and water quality issues. It will also ensure significant financial savings by postponing capital infrastructure projects and can reduce wastewater pumping cost and capacity problems in wastewater treatment plants. It is clear that there is significant scope for WCWDM in municipalities, which will result in both a reduction of non-revenue water and the total system input volume.

SignCity letter from 2004 ...from pag2...slowing down to no more than 20 Km an hour they are able to read the sign, which stretch for two or three km before each turn off, as they drive. After five hours, and over two million signs later, they reach Belfast. Exhausted, they decide to take their first stop. Driving in South Africa, they have found, is extremely dangerous. There are so many direction signs that people don’t see road signs (like stop and yield signs) anymore and simply drive through intersections at will. They are also so busy reading that their cars tend to wander all over the roads and less vigilant drivers often find themselves in accidents. Finally the Jones family passes through the Strijdom tunnel. Up to now their South African adventure has not lived up to their expectations - all they have seen are signs, with a few glimpses of countryside in-between. Now as

they drive they look, in wonder, at the mountain. Unfortunately they can’t see down the hill to the Olifants River, it’s obscured by signs: ‘NOW SELLING! MARIEPSKOP MOUNTAIN RESORT- 40 km AHEAD’, ‘30 KM AHEAD’ ‘20km AHEAD’, ‘10km AHEAD’, ‘STOP YOU’VE MISSED IT! GO BACK!’, ‘Nelspruit Tourism Centre, only 200 km away – left at the next gap between the signs’, ‘Punda-Punda Game Reserve – where nature is unspoiled, 157 km’ ...” Thank goodness it’s not quite that bad ... yet! 2010 is still six years away. I remember Hoedspruit in the mid-eighties. There were probably about 20 lodges’, three ‘private game reserves’ and a smattering of game farms. Today there are over 250 such institutions, I believe, and if each one wants to put up just three or four signs (let alone eight or ten), and don’t forget

every ‘wildlife estate’, tourism centre, shopping centre to attract people to our unspoiled area ... Each establishment in those days had guests who were intelligent enough to read road signs and follow maps, so it wasn’t necessary to tell them where to go from 30, 20, 50 or more kilometres away. A simple sign at their entrance was quite adequate. Apparently guests aren’t that intelligent any more. Certainly all lodges and B+Bs work for profit (why else would we allow hundreds of strangers to traipse through our houses?) but in those days they were also considerate of the environment. Now it looks like we don’t give a damn. Make money at all costs, regardless, and buy property/stay on my pristine bit of unspoiled wilderness and expect that my environmental ethics there will be exemplary. The fact that I am prepared to litter the area with aesthetically offensive signs has absolutely no bearing on my environmental sensitivity.... as you will see when you come to my fine establishment!” Someone asked me recently: ‘why don’t we just bulldoze down all the trees on the roadsides to make space for more signs?’ Perhaps he was serious. Rumble restaurant is situated in the heart of Hoedspruit, at Kamogelo Tourism Centre. This little piece of African culture is serving a variety of meals including steaks, seafood, pasta, pizza, burgers and

some of South Africa’s most loved foods as regular specials. Cultural dishes include tripe, Durban mbilas and nyama, amadumbe, umngqusho, Cape Malay mutton curry, morogo amanqina, boerekos lunch, mopani worms and biriyani. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with waitrons showcasing modern African cultural attire. A variety of events will be held at the restaurant, from drumming circles to live contemporary music.
