POLOKWANE - A 19 squadron Oryx helicopter crashed yesterday during an air capability demonstration at Roodewal Air Force Base in Limpopo. Fortunately there were no fatalities and one person only suffered minor injuries. Officials are investigating the incident. Air Force spokesperson Colonel Eugene Motati said they are ‘thankful that there were no fatalities. It could have been worse if it was not correctly handled,’ he told ENCA yesterday.

Lilly Otto GREECE – About three years ago, my brother Troy and I were inspired to do a long distance self-assisted swim along an island. Little did we know we would be doing it to raise awareness for the Benjamin Osmers Foundation and funds for little Daniel Otto. Inspired by Daniel, we set to work planning our swim and fundraiser. We chose to swim the length of Zakynthos, a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. I’m proud to say we finished our 50km swim in only eight days; we had planned to finish it in ten, a total of 32 hours in the water. Our starting point was Akrotiri lighthouse. We swam through crystal clear waters, experiencing spectacular views and extraordinary moments all the way.

The adventure did not come without its challenges. On the first night we found a little rocky beach to set up camp, but were soon surprised by a thunderstorm. The tide came up and a wave hit our tent, and very quickly we packed up and moved to the top of the cliffs. Our second day was a setback due to strong winds and large waves, making it dangerous to swim. We took cover and spent the night in a nearby olive grove. On day three, we had a tough day of swimming roughly 8km trying to make up for lost time. The waves were still large and breaking over the raft. We had to stop and pump up the raft twice. Due to exhaustion and time constraints we often had to camp in spots we weren’t that comfortable with, but there were many ...continued on page4...

Umbabat responds to recommendations from Parliament’s Portfolio Committee

Lindsey Jones GREATER KRUGER - Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Environmental Affairs released a statement on 12 September 2018, highlighting shortfalls in the current management of protected areas

around Kruger National Park. It also commented on the relationship between private reserves and Kruger National Park. The Umbabat Private Nature Reserve (UPNR) is an 18,000 ha reserve within the Associated Private Nature Reserves (APNR) and open to the KNP. The UPNR falls within Mpumalanga Province and therefore complies with Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) regulations. Currently, certain Provinces have not adopted the Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS) regulations. However, the UPNR Management will engage with relevant authori-

ties to consider how to comply with TOPS henceforth. The Greater Kruger hunting protocol, is reviewed continuously. This protocol is governed by current legislation, including the NEM:PA Act. The UPNR Management remains committed to compliance with the latest protocol revision. Furthermore, the statement advises a revision of co-operative agreements between the Kruger National Park and the APNR. This process has commenced. An extensive consultative process has ensued, to ensure that it aligns with the Greater Limpopo TransFrontier Conservation Area (GLTFCA) vision, objectives and outcomes. The UPNR has been a part of this engagement and looks forward to the conclusion of the revised agreement. The UPNR Management remains committed to a sound co-operative relationship with neighbours, stating: “Our focus is on what is best for the biodiversity of our region, with guidance and alignment with our partners, namely the Kruger National Park, MTPA, GLTFCA and other APNR reserves. The UPNR management plan will dovetail into the management plan of the KNP and neighbouring reserves.” Lenny Willson, Chairman of the UPNR added, “through this robust engagement, reserves, such as ours, will be able to strengthen their governance structures, based on science and experience. The dream of a 6-million-hectare open area system, a partnership relationship between state and private, one country and another, should be the hope, focus and aspiration of all citizens of ours and all nations, not only the reserves.” The current UPNR Management will therefore continue to support processes that will improve biodiversity management of protected areas and will work closely with Greater Kruger role players. These processes need to account for all management dimensions, including the significant costs involved in protecting species like rhino and securing its area. The UPNR Management believe we all have a collective responsibility towards the open system, its members and its partners.

Good day Hoedspruit Today we appeal to every resident of Hoedspruit – for Jozua, the voice behind ‘Oom Draadloos’ at Hoedspruit FM, who

has been a part of our community for almost 30 years. With your help, Uncle Jozua’s pain while walking could very soon be something of the past. Over the past months, we have managed to secure the services of a number of medical practitioners and we can now confirm that we have been privileged enough to find an orthopaedic surgeon, anaesthetist, physiotherapist and hospital, who are all willing to make Jozua’s knee replacement a reality, at a highly affordable rate. Attorney Anton Smit also came to the table by offering the use of a trust banking account. After Jozua’s operation has been paid for, all surplus funds will be made available for the next deserving medical case among the residents of Hoedspruit.

Katy on the The inspiration of road to recovery a special boy... Kerstin Nyberg Peart

HOEDSPRUIT - Local resident and mother, Dr Katy Williams, who together with her three year old son Finn was critically injured in a freak attack by a giraffe earlier this month, is recovering well. It is hoped that she could be back home next week. Little Finn still has a long road to recovery, and at the moment the extent of his injuries are not known. Katy and Finn were trampled

by a giraffe just outside their home on the Blyde Wildlife Estate. The giraffe had given birth shortly before and the reason for the attack is likely to have been that she felt her calf was threatened. Katy is an experienced wildlife scientist and would have known how to handle the situation, but animals with young can be very unpredictable. Blyde Wildlife Estate decided to relocate the giraffe and her calf, but to Katy’s great sadness

the calf did not survive the relocation. In response to the news of the calf’s death, Dr Sam Williams said: ‘Katy and I are deeply saddened to hear the news about the unfortunate death of the giraffe calf during the translocation operation. We understand the translocation team took every possible safety precaution, and it is a shame that accidents such as this can occur during even the most meticulously planned procedures.’

Above a photograph of Dr Katy Williams showing off her story on the front page of Kruger2Canyon on 26 June 2018, Volume 16 issue 16. The article covered her unusual research into Brown Hyena.

HOEDSPRUIT - Marina and Neels Otto, the parents of Daniël Otto, a special needs child in Hoedspruit who was diagnosed with Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (CMD), can truly testify to the spirit of the Hoedspruit community! Michael Dickerson, who is relatively new to Hoedspruit, has fast become part and parcel in the Hoed, and has offered to run a 100 miles for Daniël to raise funds for his specialized equipment. As with everyone else in this world, the more active Daniël is, the healthier he will stay for longer. As he cannot stand and walk by himself, keeping him active presents a major challenge. We are blessed by living in an era where technology is far advanced and specialised equipment is available, but it comes at a price! Neels and Marina have set up a special trust to raise funds in order to meet as many of Daniël’s needs as possible and to keep him as active as possible. Marina and Neels are grateful beyond words to Michael for offering to run for their Lion Hearted son! As they have seen what it takes to do something like this. Preparing for a run like this entails a lot of sacrifice and organisation. It’s not just the 161km that has to be run on the day, it’s also the 2300km of training that has gone in and the support of a wonderful team behind him. It’s is not only Michael that has to prepare, there is a full crew as well. Michael will start on Friday the 21 September at 8pm at night, which means he will be running in complete darkness for approximately 10 hours, he will most probably run the entire next day and complete his run either on Saturday evening

or Sunday morning. What this means is that he will need a support crew working around the clock to make sure he has enough nutrition, liquids equipment and all of the right stuff to keep him going. The crew will also have to run, yes run, as he needs pacers for the last 50miles. The Pacers can run in relays of 8km sections and will be essential in keeping him going and making sure he is OK. Besides Michael’s family travelling from JHB and Kokstad to provide logistics and food for the crew, the wonderful team comprising of Lindsey Dickerson, Marius de Jager, Steven Lownie and Francois Botha, who are travelling from Hoedspruit and Durban, will man the aid stations and act as pacers for him. ‘100 miles non-stop on foot, is a near impossibility for somebody suffering from CMD. For others, all it takes is a goal and putting one foot in front of the other,’ says a passionate Michael. ‘A 100 Mile race is by no means easy, but it cannot compare to the struggle that young Daniël Otto will have to face his entire life. Daniël was born

with CMD in 2013 but was only diagnosed in early 2016. Daniël lost the ability to walk and stand in that same year and in fact cannot run, jump, climb or crawl, many of the things we take for granted.’ Michael will be running the Karkloof 100 (www.karkloof100.co.za) on 21 Sept 2018, a 100-mile (161 km) trail run in the heart of the Midlands in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa to raise funds for Daniël. He aims to raise R161 000.00 (USD 11950.00) for the 161 km that will be covered. ‘Daniël really does have the courage of a Lion. I told him that I was scared for the run so I needed some of his bravery, his response ‘Don’t be scared, I am not scared at all’. He also chose the photo because he says his hand looks like a Lion Claw,’ Michael says. ‘Although Daniël faces many challenges, his greatest desire is to play just like the other kids! Join me on my 100 Mile journey to help Daniël on his journey through life.’ Please visit https://www.backabuddy.co.za/ and search for “lion heart” to make a donation.

Photos at an Exhibition in Ludlow

LUDLOW - Wild Shots Outreach recently partnered with Canon SA to deliver their Canon Young People’s Programme. This culminated in an exhibition of students’ photographs in Ludlow on 18 August. This is part of a global drive by Canon to enable young people in disadvantaged areas to tell their stories through photography. For the South African chapter, the two participating schools,

Frank Maghinyana High and Madizi High, were chosen because of their proximity to the Greater Kruger Park and their existing relationship with Wild Shots Outreach. Over 300 people from the Ludlow and White City communities attended to view the 60 photographs on display. Mike Kendrick, founder and director of Wild Shots Outreach, said ‘Though they live so close to the reserves, none

of the young people had visited them before, let alone seen or photographed a lion or an elephant. By engaging and sharing with the local communities we hope to reduce poaching and other forms of human wildlife conflict and conserve these magnificent animals and their habitat for future generations.’ The programme is supported by Cheetah Plains Lodge in Sabi Sand, Pungwe Safari

...from page1...memorable moments. One of the highlights was a beautiful moon lit night spent exploring old church ruins on St. Nikoloas Island. Our journey that day had taken us over a very deep and dangerous channel. We both had our unspoken reservations and swam with our eyes closed, only opening them when taking a breath to check the direction. Laughing at our fears later on. At the famous blue caves, a strong ocean current pulled us out to sea and loads of tourist boats made waves which made it extremely difficult to swim. None the less, it was still a beautiful swim. It was a breathtaking experience to swim with the turtles in Laganas Bay on our last two days. Laganas, in the southern part of Zakynthos, is known as the place where the endangered Caretta-Caretta turtles lay their eggs, and the beach is a part of the National Maritime Park of Zakynthos. This life changing experience has been extremely exciting and challenging, we have had

our ups and downs, but our most rewarding gift is to be able to help Daniel. Troy and I are extremely grateful for all the support, the sponsors and donations we received during this challenge. We have raised our target of R50 000 to get Daniel a much needed standing frame. Thank you to Tony Smith from the

Great Outdoor shop, the Pam Golding Team and Remax Hoedspruit for their sponsorship of our equipment. Marina Otto, a huge thank you for the constant support, help and love you have shown us. Troy, I could have never done this challenge without you. Thank you for showing me how to be brave.

Hoedspruit Dance Eisteddfod 2018

HOEDSPRUIT - Proud parents, family members, teachers and friends gathered together on Friday August 31, to enjoy watching the children dance in the last of the Hoedspruit Eisteddfod 2018 categories. Many thanks go firstly to Coen Potgieter, Headmaster of the Drakensig Primary School, for providing a perfect venue to host the Hoedspruit Dance Eisteddfod. On the beautiful stage and auditorium, over 150 children presented dance choreographies that covered a kaleidoscope of genres including hip hop, ballet, modern dance, contemporary and self choreographies. Most importantly, all schools in the area participated, including Acorn to Oaks, Christian School, Hoedspruit High, Lowveld Academy, Laerskool Mariepskop, Laerskool Drakensig, Homeschoolers and Southern Cross Prep and College students. Their performances were outstanding with several commendable results that made parents and teach-

ers beam with pride. Special thanks to Mark Hawkins who travelled down from Johannesburg to adjudicate the children and motivate them to develop their strengths in their performance and more especially in themselves. Special mention must be made that Mark is currently the Artistic Director of both the Contemporary Dance Company “Moving into Dance” Mophatong, based in Newtown, and also of the Johannesburg Youth Ballet. He danced with CAPAB, PACT Ballet and NAPAC Dance Company before travelling abroad where he worked as principal dancer with London City Ballet and Hong Kong Ballet. The dancers and teachers were truly honoured to have someone with such extensive knowledge and experience in the dance field. Maureen Lahoud, who is also a Vice Chairperson on the Hoedspruit Eisteddfod Executive committee, organised the Hoedspruit Dance Eistedd-

fod programme and says she would not have managed without the help of two essential people. Thank you to Chairperson and Treasurer of the board, Belinda Blignaut, who works fastidiously in the background, preparing certificates, communication, setup and all the arrangements that go unnoticed, but make the cogs turn in the right direction. Helping Mark with the tedious and intensely stressful job of scribe, Karen Randall managed the table and Mark’s dry sense of humour with an excellence that only a perfectionist can achieve. Thank you to all of those teachers and parents who got their children safely to the venue, to Reinhold Deacon for his perfect control of the music and to Nandi Burger, our resident Ballet teacher, and Jamie Lee Language, our resident Hip Hop teacher, for helping with the organisation. The day went off with a minimum of hitches and was enjoyed by all.

NEWS & VIEWS

Dela Casa’s first Annual Spring Fever Experience Lucky Rapitsi ACORNHOEK - South Africa celebrates Spring Day on the 1st of September every year. This is the time when people come out of their reclusive state and get out to celebrate nature and a new season. In South Africa, spring means many different things, and there are various outdoor festivals and events lined up to take advantage of the fantastic weather. On September 8 the wellknown Delacasa Pub & Grill hosted its first annual Spring Fever Experience with the famous South African singer, songwriter and poet Busiswa and other local DJs and artists in Acornhoek. Community members of Acornhoek and surrounding areas had the great experience of celebrating the spring fever experience without any incidents. Clive Maoko and Thulani Dilibe of Tihosi Events said that ‘the event was a success on all fronts; no incidents of violence took place’. Clive and Thulani further said ‘people came in large numbers to support the event and the main act Busiswa’. Owner of Delacasa Pub & Grill Caswell Mnisi was very impressed by the work done by the team and support from the people of Acornhoek and surrounding area. Caswell said ‘I just want to give a big hand to the great turn out of the people of Bushbuckridge and surrounding areas’. Caswell further said: ‘You were so good to us and it was easy for us to do our job’. ‘The warm excitement that you have shown to our guests really meant a lot to me, thank you once again, and lastly I would like to give a special thanks to my team and my partners Tihosi Event, I salute you for the efforts you have put into the event. HESC partners with Black Mambas HOEDSPRUIT - The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC) is delighted to announce a new partnership with the Black Mamba AntiPoaching Unit, the first majority female anti-poaching unit in South Africa. Founded in 2013 by Transfrontier Africa NPC, the Black Mamba Ani-Poaching unit was formed to protect the Olifants West Region of Balule Nature Reserve. Within the first year of operation the Black Mambas were invited to expand into other regions, and now protect all boundaries of the 52,000ha Balule Nature Reserve, which forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park. Two Black Mambas have joined the HESC anti-poaching team. These two ladies will work hand in hand with our current K9 unit to put more boots (and paws), on the ground at HESC, to further strengthen the security of the wildlife in our care. The partnership will create an opportunity to learn from each other, as we join forces not only to protect, but to also focus on conservation and the sustainability of endangered species. ‘There is a natural synergy between us, as both HESC and the Black Mamba’s are driven by like-minded women, passionate about wildlife, and our communities,’ says Adine Roode, Director at HESC. Both parties are committed to protecting our environment, but also in taking it a step fur-

ther, by educating and becoming respected role models in their local communities. The HESC team has likewise been actively involved in the surrounding areas and schools, for many years. The Black Mambas (consisting of 32 young women and one man), strive to create an understanding in communities, that the benefits of rhino conservation are far greater than the benefits of poaching – an objective shared by both parties. ‘Transfrontier Africa and the Black Mambas are very excited to be able to partner with HESC and lend assistance in a small way. HESC has always carried our support and has never hesitated to assist us with orphaned and injured animals that need treatment and rehabilitation. We see this as a wonderful opportunity to strengthen our relationship with HESC, and offer something small in return for all the effort and dedication that they have shown to the animals in need,’ says Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit Founder, Craig Spencer. ‘HESC is very optimistic about this new partnership’, says Lente Roode, founding Director of HESC. ‘We are confident that this initiative will create a firm a lasting foundation to further the conservation goals of both ourselves and the Black Mambas, contributing to eradicating poaching and ensure that our animals and our staff; remain protected and safe at all times,’ she added.

C&C Kids Cycling Academy

HOEDSPRUIT – ‘Getting Kids on Bikes. That’s what our aim is. We want kids to play, we want kids to have freedom, we want the lives we had, for our kids. Times have changed and kids generally do not have the freedom we had,’ says Claudia Slattery. ‘We have been planning this academy for years.’ Claudia and her hubby Cormac, or C&C Sports Coaching, have been getting kids on

bikes in JHB for years with their skills training days, and since moving to Hoedspruit they have once again started kids cycle days. The goal of these days is to give children cycling skills so that they learn the fundamental principles of how to ride a bike. How to face obstacles. How to change gears, when to change. ‘A lot goes into getting kids confident on bikes and that is what we do,’ says Claudia. ‘Howev-

er, we wanted more than just cycling days and the academy was the next step. The academy is set up for kids who have gone through our training weekends (three in total) so that we as coaches are confident that we have taught the kids correctly. We know the ability of all the riders and we know that when we take them on an outride they will love it and want to come back for more,’ enthuses Claudia.

Once the kids have progressed through the skills sessions they are able to join the more advanced academy. This academy will go out once a month riding around the Hoedspruit and surrounding areas. The cyclists will be exposed to various terrains so that they can really test their skills. Hopefully the young cyclists will be able to participate in local races and join C&C on the family fun races, as well as the more serious ones that Claudia – sponsored by Liv Giant Bikes and Greer’s Sports - enters. ‘As of 2019 C&C will be getting the kids involved in the Schools SPUR Series so that they can enjoy the freedom, the competitive part, and the adrenalin rush of playing on bikes just like us,’ ends Cormac. Hoedspruit Vlakvark MTB 2018 a tremendous success

HOEDSPRUIT - Even at a time when the market is saturated with many other sports events the Hoedspruit Vlakvark MTB was able to lure cycling enthusiasts from as far afield as Pretoria and Komatipoort. A 150 avid cyclists, young and old, took up this unique opportunity to cycle on the exclusive Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate. There was much applause at the quality of the track and exhilarating environment: ‘we saw kudu, zebra and giraffe!’ was not an uncommon exclamation on the day. Organizer of this growing event, Pierre Diederichs, would like to extend his gratitude to all the loyal sponsors who make the Vlakvark MTB possible every year. It most certainly is a fabulous family and community event, which can only grow from strength to strength and help make Hoedspruit the #cyclingdestination it is!
