Rhino Revolution rescuing pangolins Story by Harriet Nimmo Photograph Mike Kendrick HOEDSPRUIT - Rhino Revolution has formed an alliance with the African Pangolin Working Group to provide a rehabilitation service and centre for rescued pangolins. Pangolins are the world’s most illegally trafficked animal – poached for both traditional African medicines, as well as rapidly escalating demand by Asian markets for use in traditional Chinese medicine. The Lowveld is home to the little-known Temminck’s ground pangolin. Sadly more and more of these are being targeted by poachers. Rhino Revolution are now caring for and rehabilitating pangolins, rescued from the illegal poaching trade by SAPS and Hemmersbach anti -poaching unit. Our aim is to release them back into the wild. The pangolins are arriving severely compromised – very stressed, badly malnourished and dehydrated. The rescued pangolins require round the clock, 24/7 medical care and support. A very big thank you to ProVet who are helping us with veterinary care. Our veterinary and husbandry costs are escalating! If you would like to help, please see www. rhinorevolution.org/donate.

Pangolins are currently the world’s most illegally trafficked animal, these extremely rare, shy animals are under severe attack by poachers.

HOEDSPRUIT - For those of us whose dogs become family, losing one is heartbreaking, no matter how short the time they have with us. Little Angel had barely finished puppy school when tragedy struck, leaving her owners, Annamie de Bruin and Willie van Staden, mourning and at a loss for what to do with her brand new Wagworld dog bed and Rogz bowl, which arrived just days after her death. Instead of returning these items, Annamie and Willie decided to donate them to a good cause – three good causes in fact…

In the weeks that followed, it was decided that the bed and bowl would be raffled in Angel’s memory and that the proceeds would be split between Hoedspruit’s three animal charities: HALO (Hoedspruit Animal Outreach), HACI (Hoedspruit Alley Cat Initiative), and Hoedspruit Paws. Understanding the costs involved in the amazing work these charities do, Annamie set about finding sponsors to donate treats and toys to bulk up the already incredible prize and make it irresistible. Thanks to the time, effort and various donations from Annamie, Michelle de Paiva, Edenleo designs, The Pet Bar Inc, Maroela Animal Hospital, Vision Photography, Nina Kisch, Anna Mussi, and Tabby Mittins, the full prize value reached approximately R3000. All one hundred tickets were sold out at September’s farmer’s market and, including the additional generous cash donations received on the day, a whopping R3620 was collected for each of the charities! The raffle was drawn on Friday, 14 September, and a delighted Marianne Crowe received her prize soon after. Angel received more love in her short time than many animals receive in their entire lives. Thanks to the charitable spirits of those who loved her and everyone who bought tickets, made donations or got involved in this initiative in memory of Angel, many more animals in and around our bighearted town stand a chance at a better life.

HOEDSPRUIT - Hoedspruit Pick n Pay is now giving free fruit to children under the age of twelve who are shopping with their parents. The Free Fruit for Kids initiative was originally launched in selected stores but was recently rolled out to include more stores nationally after overwhelmingly positive feedback from customers. Natasha from Pick n Pay Hoedspruit told Kruger2Canyon that ‘this is a country wide initiative and community members in Hoedspruit and surrounding areas love it’. Natasha further said that ‘our senior supervisor

of fruit and vegetable, Sinky Chiloane, always packs out our best fresh fruits every morning to kick start the day for the kids who will be shopping with their parents’. To promote healthy food choices, over two hundred Pick n Pay stores across the country now offer free fruit to children under the age of twelve. Fruit and vegetables are full of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and fibre. Hoedspruit Pick n Pay store hopes that this initiative helps to keep children off the lesshealthy snacks when shopping, and helps instil a lifelong healthy eating habit.

WARD 8 - During a visit in September to Ward 8 in Maruleng, the dedicated DA team expressed their concern that an old women in the village was finding it very hard to walk and she only had 2 sticks to support her. The DA team promised to find a way to assist her with a walking ring so that she could more easily walk around. Upon request, Rose White from the Rotary Club in Hoedspruit said that she might be able to assist. A few days later she called and said the Rotary club

had found a walker frame. The DA team visited Mrs Seotlo Masehle and handed over the walker to her. She was so grateful and immediately stood more upright and began walking! ‘It was such an emotional moment for the whole team!’ said the caucus leader of the Democratic Alliance in the Mopani District Municipality (MDM), Cllr Marie Helm. She added: ‘that it is good to know that there are still organizations and people who dedicate their lives to make it better for others.’

Honeybees, elephants and trees

‘The Buzz Continues: Elephants Alive’s Honeybee Research approaches its third anniversary’

Die kompetisie was aangebied by Hoërskool Garsfontein waar daar twee leerders per provinsie deel geneem het.

Robin Cook JEJANE - The summer months have arrived and with them a hive of activity at Elephants Alive’s Elephants, Bees, Trees & People Project. For almost three years, Elephants Alive have monitored whether beehives can be used to protect iconic marula trees against elephant impact. This research is centred in Jejane Private Nature Reserve, a reserve within the Associated Private Nature Reserves of the Greater Kruger National Park. The study focuses on 150 marula trees, of which 50 contain beehives, 50 have been wire-netted (wrapping chicken-mesh around the main trunk to prevent bark-stripping), and 50 are left as control trees. Following the two-year assessment in 2017, 66% of the control and 44% of the wire-netted trees had received elephant impact, versus only 6% of the beehive trees. It is fantastic to see that even during the drought years, the beehives have continued successfully to protect their selected trees. Whilst the usage of the beehive mitigation method would not be encouraged on a large-scale across the private reserves, it does provide managers with an option of protecting certain iconic species within their properties. Additionally, Elephants Alive have now produced a manual to aid managers in setting up a beehive in a tree, and this can be downloaded from our website. With the expectations of rainfall in the upcoming weeks, our staff have been very busy on the study site cleaning out old hives and ensuring that they are ready to catch any travelling swarms. We have also turned our attention to the next stage of the project which focuses on honey production. Currently, the bees’ honey is predominantly knobthorn-based and it’s delicious! We plan to conduct more harvests after the rains to give Hoedspruit a taste of our bees’ wild honey. Keep your eyes peeled for this elephantfriendly honey coming soon! Building on our elephant-bee research, we have also collaborated with Professor Mark Wright (University of Hawaii at Manoa), Dr Agenor Mafra-Neto (ISCA Technologies) and Transfrontier Africa to explore how elephants respond to the honeybee attack pheromone. Compounds within the bee attack pheromone have been isolated and developed into a slow-releasing paste substance. We found encouraging deterrent results when exposing wild elephants to this pheromone, especially those within Jejane Private Nature Reserve (the location of the beehive study site). We do suspect that elephants require exposure to real honeybees in order to know what the smell stands for. However, if elephants can associate the smell of the attack pheromone with the event of a real honeybee attack, could this be the next tool in mitigating human-elephant conflict? Only time and more research will tell! We are very excited about the upcoming months with the beehive research. The three-year tree assessments are coming up, as well as more pheromone research in collaboration with Camp Jabulani and Human Wildlife Solutions. We will be sure to keep you in the know, on how everything progresses and would to thank all of our collaborators and supporters of this every-expanding project.

Eco Club trip to Moholoholo for the DAKTARI children

Marie Brouzeng

KAMPERSRUS - They say the best learning comes from experience rather than from books. Even though we still believe in the power of the written word, DAKTARI’s main focus is on making changes through action and first-hand involvement. That is why this September we gave 12 underprivileged children the opportunity to visit and discover the impressive Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre and all its amazing animals. The trip was organised as a reward for the most involved students of our Eco Clubs, which were created as after-school environmental classes for the children who were eager to learn and who wanted to continue their lessons after staying at DAKTARI. Every week a team of volunteers visits our two partnering schools to give those children different interactive lessons on various environmental topics, showing them interesting experiments and inspiring them to become passionate about preserving the natural environment. We wanted to give the students who regularly attended these voluntary Eco Club lessons an additional incentive to learn and discover another important reason for protecting our nature: the animals. And the Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre was the perfect place for showing them the importance of caring for wild animals, and all the challenges the wildlife is facing today. The children got a complete tour of the centre by a professional guide, who told them about the significance of every animal, how to protect them, why they are kept at the centre, along with many interesting facts about the different species. They were all very impressed by the various animals they were able to see with their own eyes, especially by the rare and impressive black leopard. So far, DAKTARI has been organising these trips once per year, but seeing the sparkles in the children’s eyes after visiting the Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre, we decided we’ll try to organise two or three excursions in the coming year.

The cutting edge, a personal journey

Michel Zwaan PHALABORWA - I have always been interested in knives but purely as an end-user. But the bug bit me when I joined a knife group for collectors and makers on Facebook. There were a few knifemakers that made the most amazing products in all different kind of styles. Some in straight forward steel and some made out of the most amazing Damascus steels produced by themselves. Damascus is a laminated steel of 2 different steel types fused together to make one piece of steel with the most amazing patterns. In 2017 I had to go to Holland for a few months to sort some

personal stuff out and there I had all the time in the world to explore the world of knifemaking via the internet and when I got back I bought myself some hand tools and just started. The knifemaking community is very close-knit but extremely helpful when asking newbie questions and I made good use of them by picking their brains for knowledge and tips& tricks and eventually made my first knife in March 2017 (actually 4 of them) which I sold to somebody in Italy. The income from that first sale went into my first machine, a belt grinder, and has served me very well since. By making and selling I was able to save enough money to

fit out a complete workshop with knife making machines and now, just over a year later, I have a fantastic workshop in a great place where I can indulge in a hobby I came to love and enjoy. The great part of this hobby is not only in making and producing the knives. It also has a big design element in it. Designing a knife together with a client is great to do. To just let go of your ridged thoughts and let the “flow guide you to a great design is one of the things I love. Then see it come true in front of your eyes while making it. Living in a Nature Reserve close to Phalaborwa has provided me with the opportunity to source and use materials beyond my wildest dreams. I only

use what is laying around in the veld and there is more than enough. Horns, bones, hardwoods and even beautiful pieces of stone. Over this short period I have build up a small fanbase from all over the world and they have been great by supporting me. The appreciation for the knives I produce has been above ex-

pectation and every day I enjoy the comments of satisfied customers. So great has the appreciation been, in fact, that I have let me lure them to exhibit in the biggest knife show of Southern African on 30-11-2018, 1 & 2-12-2018 at Brooklyn Mall, Brooklyn Pretoria. All my knives come with a

5

sheath and a 10 year guarantee. The sheaths are made from vegetable tanned cow hide and are completely handmade. They are made from the best materials available and are produced to a high standard of quality. For more see my Facebook page: Penga nDlovu Customs or call 071 9033 270.

Khomotso kry 2de kornea-oorplanting

6106: HELDER TOEKOMS. Karkloof 100

Catching up a story of an epic adventure with Daniël Michael Dickerson KWAZULU NATAL - It was a week since my Karkloof100 journey when I decided to write this, and the emotions were still running strong. From the prerace doubts and nerves, to the lows and amazing highs during the race, and to the postrace elation, it was an amazing emotional roller coaster of a journey. I learnt so much during the race that is extremely hard to put into words. I learnt a lot about myself, about running 100 miles, but most of all I learnt about the beauty of the human spirit. I just want to remind everybody about the bigger picture. Raising funds for Daniël Otto was the main driving force behind this journey and so far we have raised over R32 000.00. We have a long way to go, so keep donating and keep Daniël in your thoughts and prayers! Lining up at the start at 8pm was a daunting moment but running in the dark was surprisingly pleasant. I will admit there were a few moments when I was alone running through some plantations where I expected a Bigfoot or the Blair Witch to pop out. The first half of the race was extremely pleasant and boringly I have nothing to tell. Approaching the half-way point was an amazing experience as the sun had now risen, a large crowd was waiting, and I received an amazing welcome reception. It was also my first low point, having been on my legs for over 11 hours and 80km, I did not know how I was going to do it all over again. Thank goodness Steve Lownie would now run with me as a pacer for the first section. All was going well until about the 123km mark. Marius de Jager had now taken over as pacer and we were on the toughest climb of the race. The wind picked up, lightning bolts were shooting out of the sky and we were suddenly being pelted by heavy rain and hail which caused the temperature to drop drastically, my legs started to seize. Marius could see I was struggling and constantly reminded me to just keep going and remember why I was doing this. Arriving at the next aid station I was extremely emotional, and I could not help

HOEDSPRUIT - Since his return to Hoedspruit, Michael took some time out to catch up with Daniël, and give him and update about his run at the Karkloof100. Michael showed him all the kit he ran with, Daniël was most fascinated by his poles. He said: ‘they will be good for warding off snakes and wild animals on the trails’. ‘Thank you so much to all of

but have a bit of a cry. The next couple of sections passed by without incident but I was now running with Francois Botha as my pacer. My knees and ankles were now taking strain, but Francois’s sense of humour kept my mind off the pain and the time whizzed by. The last check point was a huge spirit lifter as the whole crew, family as well as a bunch of KZN trail friends, were there to welcome me and see me off. It was now the last stretch, it started to rain again, the mist rolled in and the sun set which made going extremely tough. Taking a couple of wrong turns and the difficult conditions made it the longest 16km of my life, but I was now running with Lindsey, my wife, which made it all the more bearable. We finally ran down the home stretch and through the finish line after 164km, 3400m of elevation gain and 24hours and 20 minutes, to unbelievable applause and the best beer I have ever tasted in my life. My heartfelt thanks go to KZN Trail Running, Trail Lab and Southern Loadstar Foundation; to Andrew and Lauren Booth from KZN Trail Running; and to all of you who made my race so memorable - I cannot thank you enough.

What were the most important things I learnt? • Do it for something bigger than yourself. It is far harder to let other people down than just yourself. • Prepare, plan, prepare then plan again. You will obviously need a lot of training, but also advice from people who have run races like this before. • Expect the unexpected. No matter how much you prepare, nothing can prepare you for certain things, so be ready to adjust along the way. • Choose your crew wisely. I am still extremely emotional, not about the actual run, but about how amazing people are, and about the amount of people wanting to help. During the race the number of messages of encouragement that I received from people back home and around the world is still something that I cannot get my head around. You will never know how much that meant to me and kept me going. • You will get through the bad patches and you can do it. When my wife Lindsey asked me if there was ever a time I wanted to quit, I instantly said yes. Upon reflection I want to change that answer. What I can say is that there were many, many times when I asked myself ‘How am I going to carry on, how am I going to do this?’

you who provided such amazing support for Michael and for the contributions towards Daniël. The money raised from the run will fully fund Daniëls new AFO’s (Ankle foot orthosis), which cost R30 000.00. He was in desperate need of new ones as he had outgrown the old ones and they had to be modified to fit him,’ said Marina Otto, Daniël’s mom.
