‘Flower Folklore’ A magical collection
by Heidi Vilkman Enchanting flora, fauna and folklore come together in this beautiful collection, full of foxes, blossoms and shapeshifting hares! My love for nature, flowers and fairytales is embedded in each beguiling pattern, inspired by my childhood in Finland and my adulthood in England.
I was born in Finland in the 70s, and spent my childhood playing with gnomes and faeries in the woods next to my home; building dens and making magic spells with the aid of my cat and a large aspen, my very special wishing tree. I enjoyed inventing things, playing with natural materials and picking petals for my own perfume concoctions. I studied and pressed wildflowers, and loved drawing, whilst dreaming about becoming an artist one day. My mother worked in an upholstery factory during day and in the evenings she was frequently sewing custom quilts for friends and family. Our house was full of Italian fabric off cuts and I often fell asleep to the sound of my mother’s semi-industrial sewing machine going: ‘Brrrrrrr..... brrrrr.....brrrrr.’, on the other side of the wall. Fast forward 30+ years, and you find me in England, by the Yorkshire moors and meadows, still collecting flowers, chasing butterflies and trying to track fairy footprints with my 6-year old daughter, who coincidentally also loves fairies and adores drawing. My patterns are full of childlike wonder, mixed with flora, fauna and stories from the places I have lived, worked and loved in. Nature - and fairytales - are among my biggest sources of inspiration. So, I wanted my first fabric collection to convey that place of enchantment. I hope you can see the fairy dust sprinkled on these pages!
