“When I was invited to perform and direct in Aloha on a Mission, I was more than happy to accept. Not only is my heart aligned with the Aloha Medical Mission and what it stands for, but the play is exciting, moving, and captivating. And the songs we’ll be performing ties in beautifully with this inspiring storyline.”
Elizabeth Ignacio Dr. Elizabeth Igancio is an orthopedic surgeon and managing partner of IMUA Orthopedics, Sports, & Health. She is surgical director of The Queen’s Medical Center Sports Medicine Program, and is an assistant professor at the John A. Burns School of Medicine Department of Surgery. As for theater, she hasn’t been onstage since the role of Velma in the show Chicago as a Georgetown undergrad “just a few” years ago.
“To be onstage now at the Hawai‘i Theater amongst such incredible talent is a midlife middle-age dream! To be doing this in support of AMM, and to be able to because of loving family and friends, is an immeasurable Blessing. Since lacking in talent, please applaud the courage, the effort, and my intent! As I wish for you, from my one heart, Love, Joy, and LIGHT!”
Nicole Velasco Nicole Velasco has never acted on stage before. She hopes you enjoy what will be her first and last performance providing comic relief amidst the incredible talents of her fellow cast members. When not rehearsing for this play, Nicole serves as the lead for business development in Hawai‘i for NORESCO, an energy efficiency company. Nicole has held numerous leadership roles in city and state government, and is an active member of our community. Aloha Medical Mission
Dr. Ramon Sy Aloha Medical Mission Board Member and Co-Founder Good evening and welcome. Thirty-four years ago, six doctors from Hawai‘i and a plastic surgeon from Chicago travelled to Bicol, a rural area in the Philippines, to conduct our first medical mission. After working for two weeks and seeing close to 2000 patients and performing almost 200 plastic and reconstructive procedures, we were somewhat exhausted but inspired by the unforgettable experience that changed our lives tremendously and in remarkable ways. Tonight, I would like to share some of the key achievements of the Aloha Medical Mission. For the past 34 years since 1983, over 5,486 volunteer doctors, dentists, nurses and lay people have traveled to 22 countries and have conducted over 180 medical missions. Together they have performed over 22,045 minor and major surgical procedures, and we are proud to report that in total, close to 285,779 patients have been served. This is a major milestone for the organization. In 2001 we established a dental clinic in Kalihi for our local community. This clinic is unique, as it is the only free
dental clinic that serves the uninsured folks in Hawai‘i. It is staffed by paid and volunteer dentists and others donating their time and effort. These 5,486 volunteer doctors, dentists, nurses and lay people are the invaluable contributors to Aloha Medical Mission’s legacy and they represent the foundation of our organization. They have sacrificed their time and money to help others. It’s critical that I acknowledge that these volunteers are the true Heroes of AMM. We also have people who work behind the scene to make our project possible. These invaluable volunteers help us in preparation with mission supplies, they handle logistics, and work tirelessly to achieve the objectives of the mission. These are the true Angels of the organization. Tonight, I would like to highlight some of those Heroes and Angels that likely may not be known to you. The first individual I want to recognize is William Wong, Jr. who was in college in 1991 when he traveled with me to the city Cagayan de Oro of Mindanao,
Philippines for our mission. After the mission, he decided to become doctor. After medical school he was trained as an ophthalmologist and served for 8 years in the US Army and did a tour of duty in Iraq. He later returned to Hawai‘i and established his own thriving practice. Last year he was elected as President of Hawai‘i Medical Association and three weeks ago, Dr. William Wong Jr. was installed as its President. We acknowledge and thank you for your invaluable contributions, Dr. Wong. We have other young people, high school and college student volunteers who decided to become doctors after their medical mission with us. To name few of them, we have Dr. Genevieve Ley, Dr. Brandon Wong, Dr. Julie Henais, Dr. Natalie Parsa and Dr. Alan Parsa, Dr. Racquel Bueno, and many more. This student program creates opportunities and inspires young volunteers to become doctors that are now leaders serving in our community. Other notable volunteers are the Watanabe family. In early 1990’s, Jeff Watanabe used to put on his shorts
Aloha Medical Mission
and t-shirt on Sunday afternoon to help pack our medical supplies and equipment at his brother-in-law’s warehouse in Kalihi. His late brotherin-law, Jack Manildi was a wonderful person. Jack used to go to hospital to pick up donated supplies and equipment, and store or ship them to various areas. Jack also has traveled with us at least 18 times. He usually worked as advanced staff visiting the mission site, checking the lodging facilities, setting up the supplies, and even buying our paper goods, napkins, bottled water and other necessary little things we need for our operation. Jack was an incredible person and will be always in our hearts. We also want to recognize Jack’s sister, Lynn Watanabe. I met Lynn in 1989 in our mission in Cebu, Philippines where there was a coup d’état with President Corazon Aquino. Since then, Lynn has done incredible works for us. Lynn’s son, Bobby, then 12 years old, helped his mother to pick up a donated bulky surgical equipment from Queen’s Medical Center. Three of us hauled this piece of equipment to the Hawai‘i Electric Company warehouse on Ward Avenue.
Lynn is also being honored tonight for her Lifetime Achievement. It was a lot of hard work and we’re forever grateful and appreciative of the entire Watanabe family’s support. Another volunteer we want to recognize is Rev. Alex Vergara, a Chaplain of the Honolulu Police Department, who in 1993 travelled with us to Vietnam. He has traveled with us on over 20 missions. Not to promote religion but to help us with our supplies, do the logistics and take pictures to document our work. Alex is very good hearted person and lately organized 2 missions to the Philippines. He even brought his family of 8 to help his mission in 2015. Thank you Reverend Alex Vergara. We are also fortunate to have a lawyer from Los Angeles, Arthur Fine. I want to acknowledge Art and his wife, Margie, who is a general surgeon and professor at UCLA. Art and Margie helped us established the LA unit of AMM and they have organized 13 missions over the past seven years, and recruited volunteers from west coast areas and other mainland states.
They traveled to Asia, Central and South America. Art Fine also helps us with the program for amputee patients who have lost their arms by fitting them with prostheses. More than 500 people have benefited from this program. We are grateful to have them. All of our efforts become possible because of these 5,486 wonderful and awesome volunteers’ hard work and sacrifices, and with your donations and support. Not to pay for our volunteers’ travel expense, but to buy our medical and surgical supplies and equipment for our missions. We hope to continue our work to assist the poor people at home and overseas to help their medical and surgical ailments. Again, a warm thank you to all the volunteers, our supporters, and the donors of Aloha Medical Mission.

Dr. Bradley Wong
Colleen Minami
Lynn Watanabe
Dr. Brad Wong has been the guiding force of Aloha Medical Mission, the Dental Clinic, and the overseas missions during his tenure as President of the Board. He has ensured the evolution of AMM into the next millennium in spite of adversities but also opening doors to opportunities for AMM to expand and be recognized in the community. His love and passion is the overseas mission, which he has masterfully navigated through the years but he has also been an advocate of the Hawai‘i mission, which is the free dental clinic, because it is AMM’s legacy in Hawai‘i. Brad has ensured that the future of AMM is left in the hands of new, forward-thinking, experienced Board of Directors, some of whom he has personally recruited due to his vast relationships with other professionals, other community agencies, and the volunteers of the overseas missions.
Colleen Minami is a committed and conscientious volunteer who will do anything to help the organization from the smallest laborious task to her extremely generous constant flow of personal monetary donations. Fortunately, she has many valuable skills coming from a medical background which constantly helped her support AMM’s efforts in so many ways to bring medical and dental care to needy members of Hawai‘i’s community. One of her most valuable assets is her ability to write successful grants and she has done many for AMM making it possible to help thousands of people in need both here in Hawai‘i and in the Pacific Region. As Lynn Watanabe wrote, “I think the single most valuable thing I ever did for AMM was to get Colleen involved.”
Without Lynn Watanabe, there would be no AMM. It is clear that her continuing and dedicated efforts to fundraise have been key to maintaining AMM’s mission. She has been personally generous and also the kingpin of a host of friends and associates who have responded to her cheerleading for donations and support, including the late Senator Daniel K. Inouye. She has been intimately involved in numerous major and minor fundraising events on behalf of AMM. Lynn and Colleen Minami were also staunch supporters of AMM’s free medical and dental clinics, looking for opportunities to promote the mission of AMM. Lynn also helped implement the Welcome Smile Program in 2011.

Dr. Kerry Ishihara
Susan Scott, RN & Dr. Craig Thomas
Dr. Kerry Ishihara has been AMM’s staunch supporter and volunteer since 1995 when AMM first opened its free dental clinic at the Institute for Human Services. He has demonstrated his commitment and dedication to the mission of AMM as he has continued to volunteer at the clinic once or twice a month, is the credentialing coordinator for the clinic, and currently serves on the Board of Directors. In spite of his practice being in Wahiawa, he has managed to attend Board meetings throughout the year and has participated on the Hawai‘i Program Committee, which oversees and guides the dental clinic during difficult times but also stimulates the clinic to embrace challenges.
Dr. Craig Thomas & Susan Scott, RN had the persistence and vision to guide the partnership between AMM with the local Bangladesh medical clinic sponsors. Since 1999, the clinic and social service organization has served more than 40,000 clients and they have been passionate about their endorsement and involvement with the Bangladesh Clinic. They both love the ocean and take their ship, the Honu, out on adventurous trips to the South Pacific with Susan, an accomplished captain, writing interesting articles on marine life that they come across.

“Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things.” —The Shawshank Redemption
Thank you for allowing us to share our story, “Aloha on a Mission” — inspired after two recent journeys to the Philippines, as part of the Consuelo Foundation’s Project Hope in 2014 and Aloha Medical Mission in 2016. From these experiences, I witnessed real life heroes saving lives and giving hope, and reaffirming my belief in the human spirit. Each song in this musical is special to me, as I’ve listened to them — over and over again — with Marissa and Jordan, my greatest gifts. Mahalo for reading, revising and improving my script, and giving it life. Maraming salamat to an amazingly talented cast and crew, led by Kristian Lei, Elizabeth Ignacio and Nicole Velasco. Their strength, passion and beauty reminds me of the women in my life: my wife Patricia, and my sisters, Arleen, Amanda, Rachele and Martha. And to all of you, thank you for sharing your aloha towards our mission.
In memory of my sister, Anna Maria.
