Cape Town South-Africa 10.09.2014 - 18.09.2014
This is a photo album of my study trip to Cape Town. In September 2014 we, four architects and one urban designer, chose to do a design project in Cape Town, South Africa. Two lecturers accompanied us during field research: Jeroen Mensink & Gert Breugem. This trip became a really inspirational and fascinating journey I will never forget. This is a small photo collection of a week of fieldwork. We tried to found out the culture, challenges and urgent topics of the city. Besides the field work we picked up a lot of knowledge about the city by visiting Rashiq Fataar (Future Cape Town), Annelise de Bruin (Metropolitan Spatial Planning, City of Cape Town), Simone Le Grange (University of Cape Town), Guy Briggs and Jacqui Barhouch (DHK architects), Uno Pereira (Noero Architects) and by just talking to the really helpful Capetonians. From now on I will follow the events and developments in Cape Town. I fell in love with its beauty and ugliness. It is a beautiful city with a rich nature, in the city as well as near it. Still, only a few residents and a lot of tourist can enjoy this side of Cape Town. After 20 years of apartheid, the city is still fragmented, divided and it has an unhealthy urban fabric. The urban sprawl is getting bigger year by year. Unbelievable if you see how much space there is within the city to densify, which should be in my opinion a tool to heal the urban fabric. I tried to show whole of Cape Town we visited, with this photo album. Enjoy! Hein
