Summer is here, and that means a variety of great activities are set to begin! From All Star games, Saturday morning Market Days, First Fridays in Old Town, the annual July 3rd fireworks display along with a new addition of Jazz in the Park at the Helena Amphitheatre on July 13th. Sounds like summer is in the air! I am pleased to announce that the new Emergency Alert System, designated to provide local emergency alerts to our citizens via smart phones, email and land lines is up and running. Please note, the system is not intended to replace weather radios, public media or other services you may already use, but is designed to be an additional means for emergency communications and important information to be disseminated to our residents. Please visit www. cityofhelena.org to sign up for this

service. More info on page 10. As stated in my last update, the Helena Utility Board is in the beginning stages of approving upgrades and required improvements at our Wastewater Treatment Facility. ADEM and the EPA have mandated strict new regulatory requirements for waste water treatment, and we must make renovations and changes to the existing facility in order to comply. Brian Shannon, project engineer (and Helena resident) with Garver Engineering, presented an overview of the plan at the public meeting held at City Hall on April 24th. Due to the cost of this unfunded, government mandated regulation, needed improvements, and the rising costs of existing sewer operations, a rate study has been ordered by the Utility Board. The study will look at our current operational costs and how funding the project, possibly through the State Revolving Fund program, will affect our current customer sewer service rates. Cities surrounding us who are also in the Cahaba

River basin have been impacted by the same strict new EPA/ADEM regulations. But, beyond the EPA and ADEMâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mandated strict regulatory requirements, we are obligated to make sure our facility and processes are protecting, preserving and insuring the environmental safety and sanctity of Buck Creek and the Cahaba River waterway. We will have more on this as it continues to develop. Now, on to traffic issues. I had a personal meeting with ALDOT State Director John Cooper regarding current and planned projects in our area and again asked him to help expedite road improvements in our area. ALDOT will let bids on the Highway 261/52/17 and 91 intersection improvement in July. The construction start date will depend on how this is expedited and when bids are accepted by ALDOT. Mr. Cooper assures me that they are moving as quickly as possible, and that all construction will take place at night, so as to not interfere with daily traffic at this busy intersection. As stated in my last letter, the traffic control device (red light)

for the intersection of County road 52W and Hillsboro Parkway will be a tremendous help in moving traffic to and from the new Helena High School once it is completed. I am told that the design, bidding, and actually obtaining the devices for installation could take up to six months to complete, due to earlier difficulties in obtaining final approvals from the County Engineers. This has all been worked out. In the meantime, police will be on hand to move traffic safely at that intersection during peak school hours this fall until the light is functioning. Police officials will also be working with Helena High School administrators to help educate parents and student drivers on preferred traffic routes to use going and coming from the school during peak school traffic hours. This is certainly an exciting time as the opening of Helena High gets closer! Go Huskies! Have a safe and happy summer! Best Regards,

Birmingham Magazine readers select Oak Mountain Orthodontics  Best in Birmingham Birmingham magazine and Alabama Baby & Child magazine have come together to bring the Parents’ Choice Awards to the Birmingham area for three years. More than 5,000 people answered the online survey, entering the names of Birmingham businesses they think are the best in 81 different categories. The 2014 Parents’ Choice Award for Best Birmingham Orthodontist was given to Helena’s own Dr. Priscila Denny of Oak Mountain Orthodontics. “We told everyone who came through the office, ‘hey, vote for me’, but I didn’t think I was going to win!” Priscila laughed. “It is very exciting.” To her young clients, their parents and anyone else who knows Dr. Denny, this award comes as no surprise. Since opening her practice in Helena, she has made professional and friendly relationships across the community, given

donations to the Buck Creek Festival and bought the winning Easter baskets for the city Easter Egg Hunt for several years in a row. She also has a great ongoing partnership with Helena schools. Every year she donates 1,000 T-shirts to HMS for the students and teachers to wear on the annual end-of-the-year Husky Day. The t-shirts, emblazoned with the new Helena Husky logo on the front, are very popular with students. It’s a common sight to see friends signing their names, writing inside jokes and drawing on each other’s shirts throughout the fun day. Some students even cut fringe at the bottom of the shirts. “I wanted to do something that the kids could enjoy, that would bring good memories for a long time,” Dr. Denny said. The orthodontist herself has shirts just like these from her school when she was young, filled with fond memories. “It went over well the first year, so we’ve done it every year since. I think the kids enjoy them,” she continued. Cindy Brophy, a parent and happy HMS volunteer, said giving out these shirts year after year is only part of what Dr. Denny does in the community. “We chose Dr. Denny as our family orthodontist because of all that she does with the schools,” Cindy said. “We really appreciate it.” Cindy’s eldest son, Brooks, is a PHS student currently wearing

braces and receiving orthodontic care with Dr. Denny. Bailey, Cindy’s 6 grade HMS student, cannot wait to get her braces at Oak Mountain Orthodontics too. “The kids all want to have braces at the same time as their friends,” Cindy laughed. Priscila greatly appreciates Brooks, Bailey, Cindy and all of the many students and parents like them who support her business and trust her with something so precious as their children’s health. “I would like the people of Pelham and Helena to know that this award means a lot to me, because it is the Parent’s Choice Awards and it is the public who chooses the winners,” she said. She explains that having a child has shown her just how much trust parents put in their children’s doctors. “To know that all these parents put that trust in me, for their children, means so much to me.” Dr. Denny opened her first office in Pelham in February 2006 on Old Montgomery Highway near Riverchase Middle School. This was followed in June 2010 by the opening of her Helena office, next door to Zone 1 in the Publix shopping center, at the

corner of Highway 17 and Coalmont Road. She and the Oak Mountain Orthodontics team still serve clients a full range of orthodontic services; traditional metal braces, invisible braces, ceramic braces and more from both locations. “And, in the near future, the Helena office will host movie memorabilia from Marilyn Monroe, among other great actors and actresses,” Dr. Denny excitedly announced. Caleb Randall is 14 years old and the son of Jason and Barbie Randall. He’s an only child, but has a lot of cousins and close friends. He attends Thompson Middle School in Alabaster, AL where he’s currently in the 8th grade and on the AB honor roll. He played football for TMS for the 2013 – 2014 school year. He’s a member of New Vision Christian Church where he’s a part of the youth choir, step team, drama ministry and parking ministry. Caleb has also been accepted into the UAB Teen Volunteer Program where he will perform volunteer services from June 2nd thru June 27. Community message system now working in Helena Sign up now, it’s free! Anyone who has wished for a system to alert you when roads are closed, when police or fire emergencies occur, or other goings-on of note happen in your community, rejoice! Helena now has a community-wide emergency alert system in place, provided by a company called Blackboard. According to their website, “The Blackboard Connect mass notification system gives you the ability to reach your community in minutes—whether it is a time-sensitive situation, event outreach, or attendance notification.”

“You can deliver targeted, time sensitive information to entire populations or just the personnel who serve them. Blackboard provides more effective crisis communications and keeps your citizens better informed and prepared,” it says of its local government alert system, which Helena uses. Run through Blackboard Connect, the system depends on user sign-up to work. Residents of Helena can sign up for alerts by clicking on the “sign up for Helena’s new emergency alert system” button (pictured below) on the city website at www.

cityofhelena.org . A direct link to the sign up page is https:// helenaalerts.bbcportal.com/. After creating a username and password for their account, users choose whether they would like to receive alerts by phone call, text message, email, or through all of these methods. They also choose what types of notifications they want to receive, including city, police and fire alerts. With space to add up to 10 phone numbers and 10 email addresses for alerts, entire families can be on one account. When adding phone numbers to an account, only use numbers without spaces or hyphens. Users who had already signed up for the service received the

first alert message on Monday, May 26, about a scheduled closure of Highway 52 at Lee Street in Pelham. “It was a good opportunity to do a real-time test,” Helena Mayor Mark Hall said in a meeting the following day. Anyone who was signed up for the alert system but did not receive a message needs go to the online registration site to check or change their message settings.

Poet Laureate, Fire Explorers, and city schools honored in council meeting Several exciting announcements were made at the city council meeting on May 19. The Fire Exploreres placed second in the annual Trussville Explorers Competition Room Search. Samuel Kent was named Helena Poet Laureate for 2014 after winning the National March Madness Poetry tournament. Julia Virgin (daughter of April and Shane Virgin): Julia loved the 8th grade banquet, where she won Most Friendly. “It was so much fun to get all dressed up and hang out with friends.” Her favorite teacher is Mrs. Huguley. “She loves all of her students, is so funny, and an amazing role model for everyone.” Three things she couldn’t live without are Chick-fil-a, her iPhone 4s, and her family / friends. “I am really excited and honored to be the first class that goes through HHS, because we will be making new traditions for upcoming classes.”

Chris Adams (son of Lisa and Bill Adams): His favorite HMS memory was the National Junior Honor Society induction ceremony. “My favorite teacher is Mr. Green, because he was a good teacher and I felt like he truly cared about me.” The three things he could not live without are his loving family, friends, and Jesus, his Lord and Savior. He is very proud of making all A’s at HMS and having the highest math grade in all of Mr. Brown’s classes. “I feel blessed and privileged to be the first class to go through the new and beautiful HHS.”

Hope Hodges (daughter of Tony and Wendy Hodges): Hope enjoyed being in the Destination Imagination club with Ms. Tucker. “DI is a fun extracurricular activity that involves acting and thinking,” she said. Her greatest achievement was helping her team win 1st place at state. “I love Mrs. Jenkins for being a great teacher and for her kindness, and Mr. Howland made learning fun!” She cannot live without her family, her dog Spain, and a good dessert. “I feel honored, lucky and proud to be the first class in HHS. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Emily Englezos (daughter of Costa and Amy Englezos): Emily loved cheering all three years at pep rallies and football games. “I’ve been lucky to have a few teachers that really inspired me at HMS.” Three things she can’t live without are God, family, and friends. “All three keep me going.” She is proud of getting all A’s and being an ambassador in 8th grade. “Being in the first class that goes to HHS means a lot to me. Not many students get the experience like we will and have the chance to start new traditions for years to come I can’t wait to start in the fall!”

Hallie Smith (daughter of Brian and Michelle Smith): Hallie loved being on the cheer and volleyball teams at HMS, and the 8th grade banquet was a highlight of her career there. “My favorite HMS teacher is Mrs. Brown. She was very funny while she taught us English and science.” Three things she could not live without are her best friend, family, and church. She is proud of being in the National Junoir Honor Society and playing sports. Hallie is very excited about attending HHS. “I can’t wait to meet the new teachers!”

Adam Jusino (son of José Jusino and Angelica Meléndez): Adam’s favorite memory is the 8th grade banquet. He couldn’t pick a favorite teacher, because he loves everyone who taught him. “If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t have passed 6-8th grade. I wouldn’t be ‘a great student’.” Adam cannot live without family, food, and water. His greatest achievements were being chosen for student council, student ambassador, and Outstanding 8th Grader. “I am very excited and it is an honor being the first freshman class to attend HHS. I have to thank the teachers and staﬀ for everything they have done to prepare me to go to the new high school.”

Seth Long (son of Mark and Teresa Long): Seth said his favorite Helena Middle School memories come from the competitions that he participated in, as well as the 8th grade banquet. He also did not want to pick just one favorite teacher. He is thankful for “the teachers, janitorial staﬀ, the principals, and everyone that keeps the school running. They’re all great.” Three things Seth said he could not live without are food and water, family and friends, and “something to do.” Seth thinks being part of the first students at HHS will be awesome, and wants the city to try to start a college in Helena next.

Alfredo J. Guzman (son of Mairiz and Alfredo L. Guzman): Alfredo loved riding all the fun roller coasters on the school Six Flags trip with his friends. His favorite teacher is Ms. Tucker, “because of all the encouragement and inspiration she gave us in Destination Imagination and in class.” Three things Alfredo could not live without are music, friends, and family. “Without their support, I wouldn’t be where I am now.” His greatest achievement was getting into the National Junior Honor Society. “I was so happy and honored to see my hard work pay oﬀ.” He is looking forward to making new memories with his friends in band and in class at Helena High School.

Write Your Own Success Story With Snap Fitness! It will be three years in July since Melissa Sumners became a member at SNAP Fitness and over that time she has lost 120 lbs! Melissa, a social worker who works at Gateway, says she is proof that persistence pays! Her support team at SNAP has made the difference for her. Working with trainers Anna Reimers and Jackie Droxler, as well as taking advantage of Boot Camp classes, Melissa says, “My exercise regime has become a part of my life, now. I have come too far to turn around now and I so appreciate the friendly atmosphere I have found here.” Melissa also participates in cardio dance classes and has added running to her fitness program. She has run a 5K and has her eye

set on running a half or full marathon. “In the past I tried Weight Watchers, I tried counting calories. I would make a resolution to change my eating habits, but somehow never followed through. I now avoid fast food. I drink a lot of green tea and pack my diet with salmon, turkey, chicken and carrots, green beans and broccoli. I’m not perfect; I do give myself (food) rewards at times.” “I have certainly had plateaus along the way, but I keep on keeping on. I tell myself it’s downhill from here.” “When I achieve my

goal of 170 pounds,” Melissa adds, “I will be consulting with a surgeon to have the remaining excess skin removed.” “A balanced perspective is very important,” says Anna Reimers. “And your support team can help carry you past times of challenge or beyond a plateau.” “Weight loss in not always a quick thing,” notes manager Sam Stuart. “We are here to lend encouragement to our members in every way possible.” “We offer our congratulations to Melissa and know that she is an inspiration to others.”

Destination Imagination teams win Destination Imagination is in its 2nd year at HMS. All seven teams placed in the top three in the regional tournament and advanced to the state tournament. At the state level, three teams earned third place and two teams placed first, thus qualifying them for the DI Global Tournament. Taking first place at the ID state tournament were the HMS teams SCATZA and Kafka, Inc. “The SCATZA team name,” Alec Tilton pointed out, “contains the first letter from each of our last names.” Team members were Alaynna Surcouf, Alec Tilton, Santiago Vaqueiro, Chloe Bullock, Zac Fuller and Taylor Causey. “Our theme was a game show where the contestants detected hidden objects,” Alec explained. Team Kafka, Inc., which also placed first, included students Mary Beth Oehrlein, Hope

Hodges, Noah Yawn and Amelia Brannon. “We told the story of a super hero that everyone loves to hate,” explained Mary Beth, “and our skit was full of jokes and puns.” “We placed first against six other teams. We played up some of the traits that we observe in each other, rather than creating fake personas, which is why I think we did so well,” she added. Destination Imagination was created to inspire and equip students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders. It teaches critical thinking, collaboration, communication, citizenship and courage. “DI is the ultimate expression for all the performing and visual arts,” said Team Manager and School Coordinator Luci Tucker. “They design the scenery and the costumes; they write the skits and the music.”

From March through September, students work on their concepts before heading first to regional, then to state competition. The Global Competition is held in Knoxville, Tenn., but the HMS teams will not be attending, a fact Tucker hopes to change by next year. “The cost per child is $650 to go to the Global Competition. We never take just part of a team,

so we are counting on raising funds in the coming year so that everyone who has earned a place can attend and participate,” Tucker said. The Destination Imagination Global Competition brings 8,000 students from 15 countries. Next year, Ms. Tucker will sponsor one all-high school team at the new HHS and two teams of 8th and 9th graders together.

HES art teacher Alice Lobell retires “We’re not saying farewell, but from all your grateful friends and colleagues and all the boys and girls whose lives you have touched, you’re something else!” said Helena Elementary School Principal Mary Cooper to retiring art teacher Alice Lobell.

Dr. Cooper presented Alice with a framed drawing of a tree with a heart carved into it. The tree’s leaves were made up of children’s fingerprints, and it was signed with well-wishes from all of the faculty and staff. Amidst flowing tears, Alice

said, “I really appreciate all of you so much— in all the ways you have helped me. Thank you all, and my parent volunteers for making time in your schedules to help with our art fair.” Tears were transformed to smiles with her son, Jonathan Hollabaugh, daughter, Thea Lobell, and granddaughter, Riley Hollabaugh, standing by as former student Jordan Narkates appeared to sing Jailhouse Rock for her. Alice shared that she is retiring to take care of her 91-year-old

mother who is moving to Helena. She will continue to teach summer art camp and some other art classes, so she is not really saying goodbye. Dr. Cooper added, “Ms. Alice is a legend in her own time at Helena Elementary School!”

"This is the first year Shelby County has had summer enrichment programs offered county-wide," Gifted Resource teacher Amanda Miller said. The expansion of these programs was spearheaded by Janet Gulledge, Youth Enrichment Manager in the Community Education

and Afterschool Care Services department of the Shelby County School System. "She came out to the schools begging for teachers to run programs this summer," said Gifted Resource teacher Shelli Abernathy. "She won me over when she said we don't have to have lesson plans, that the classes could be more loose and fun." Gym teacher Tim Genry is excited about leading his classes. "It's kind of an experiment, to see how much participation we get

"The kids are very interested in LEGO, so I decided to base my class around that," she explained. Her class is offered 9am12pm June 23-27 and July 21-25. Participating children will learn the mechanics of and how to make everything from paper airplanes to kites to coke bottle rockets (all of which they can take home afterward). A tournament will decide who is the speediest stacker on the final day of camp. This camp is offered 1-3pm July 14-18 and 9-11am July 21-25. Prayers for Baby Bea The adorable, happy Beatrix Katherine Snowden was born to Thomas and Laura Snowden July 23, 2013 with a rare series of complex birth defects called VACTERL Association. This stands for Vertebral anomalies, Anal atresia, Cardiac defects, Tracheoesophageal fistula and/ or Esophageal atresia, Renal & Radial anomalies and Limb defects. Only approximately 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 40,000 infants are born with this condition. Beatrix spent the first 8 months of her life at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where she endured many major surgeries and procedures, along with numerous complications. Two months ago, her doctors in Atlanta determined that they could not be of further help to her and she was flown by private jet to Boston Children’s Hospital. In Boston, she has undergone

over 18 hours of surgery, including the groundbreaking “Fokker Method” of esophageal growth and repair. Bea’s progress in Boston has been remarkable, although she was diagnosed this month with a blood infection. The doctors say that when the infection clears, she can return home. Bea’s family is raising money to help with medical costs not covered by insurance and expenses incurred during her parents’ lengthy stay in Boston. Kim Bailey named head counselor at Helena High

Helena High School’s head counselor Kim Bailey has a lot on her plate: helping set up the processes necessary for the school to open, working on student schedules, looking over building details and budgeting."We're doing everything from ordering paper clips and pens to starting a school from scratch," she laughs. HHS Principal Jay Peoples has nothing but respect for the counselor and all her hard work. "Kim Bailey, the best

school counselor I’ve ever been around, has been onsite at Pelham High School making sure that students coming to Helena learn what their options are and have the opportunity to choose courses,” he said. Kim explained on that front, she had a lot of help from the PHS and HMS counselors, who have made sure she has access to the upcoming students. Although she currently works with incoming students, her joy is outgoing students. "It's an honor and a privilege to see the students during that transitional phase, as they get ready to graduate and head off to college," she said. In Kim's own college career, she achieved her Bachelor's Degree at The University of Alabama in Secondary Language Arts and her Master's of Education at the University

of Montevallo in Counseling. Following graduation from The University of Alabama, she taught 10th grade honors English and psychology at Minor High School for eight years. While there, she became involved in Peer Helpers, training upperclassmen in mentoring, tutoring and conflict resolution. "I also worked with Peer Helpers at Oak Mountain and Chelsea, and I look forward to doing it at Helena too," she said. "I want to help juniors and seniors become confidants for the younger students, which may be especially necessary in a new school setting." After obtaining her master’s, Kim taught English for a year at Oak Mountain before becoming a counselor there under Marc Wright, who she credits as her mentor. She was also a counselor at Chelsea. At the Montevallo, Thompson and Shelby County High Schools, she worked

as a gifted students' college advisor, where she became knowledgeable about college admission policies and where to help students find scholarships. Oak Mountain and Chelsea were her introduction to Dual Enrollment courses, which HHS has big plans for in the coming years. Kim has already helped the school set up courses through Jefferson State Community College, and they are looking into working with the University of Montevallo as well as other area colleges. At HHS, Kim looks forward to helping the students name their yearbook, the annual pageant (similar to Miss PHS), help brainstorm sports' chants and mottos, among many other fun details that will become traditions in the school. "We're gonna make sure the students feel welcome at Helena High School, like they are a part of something big," she said.

Shark Tank comes to HIS Shelli Abernathy teaches the 3rd-5th grade Gifted Resource Classes at HIS. After three years, she puts together a big, fun project to send off the 5th graders to middle school. This year, she organized a Shark Tank program–like the one on ABC. The TV show Sharks are "tough, selfmade, multi-millionaire and billionaire tycoons" who listen to entrepreneurs give product or service pitches. If a Sharks like what they see, they provide funds. Shelli enjoys how the show inspires people to make their own inventions and decided to do an HIS Shark Tank for that very reason. "We were just studying inventions and coding, and

what better way to end the year than with a culmination of these things?" she said. Thirty-six student teams competed in a preliminary teacher-judged round on Monday, May 19 to earn a position in the Top 10 – which gave them the opportunity to present in front of the “Sharks” and potentially earn part of the $100 prize money. There was a tie between two teams, so 11 student teams presented to the sharks on Tuesday, May 20. SCISC Elementary Lead Gifted Teacher Laurie Sherrell was selected as one of the Sharks, along with Middle School Lead Gifted Teacher Sherri Spears, parents Michael Kennedy,

“Every time you get a power bill, change your air filters. You know they won’t forget to send you a bill.” Hidey-ho good neighbors. It has been a beautiful spring and now on to the hot summer. Your air conditioner units will be working a lot, so do not forget to change out those filters. The leading cause of HVAC break downs is a dirty air filter. We carry a wide selection of different size filters and also have some hypo-allergenic ones. I personally recommend flat panel fiberglass filters, which you should change out every month. They put less restrictions on your fan motor, which means more air flow and less stress on the motor. I have trouble remembering to change my filter every month, but my pawpaw taught me a trick: every time you get a power bill, change the filter. You know they won’t forget to send you a bill. Are you into saving money? Meg and I started making our

own laundry detergent about three years ago, before we had our son. We realized we were spending around $10 every two weeks on detergent. Meg found a recipe to make our own detergent on the Duggar’s website. It calls for one bar of Fels-naptha, one cup of Arm and Hammer washing soda, and half a cup of Borax. Their directions tell you to grate the bar of Fels-naptha into a saucepan. I grate it with a knife, which works a lot better than anything else I have found. Then put about 4 cups of water over the grated soap and heat it until the soap dissolves. Then put the washing soda and borax into a five gallon bucket and pour the melted soap over it. Fill the bucket to the top with water, stir, and the next day you have a lot of laundry soap. The Duggars say they

put theirs in an old laundry detergent bottle half and half with water and use a cup every load. We just keep the bucket in our laundry room and use half a cup a load. Check out the Duggars website under recipes for the detergent recipe. The washing soda and borax go a long way, and also can be used for other cleaning projects. HMS 7th graders scoring high on ACTs in Duke TIP program

Gifted teacher Luci Tucker knows many smart students come through HMS, and feels privileged to help them further their own knowledge and capacity to learn. Last month, several of her 7th graders were recognized for their latest academic achievement: scoring well on the ACT. How would a 7th grader take

the SAT? Through the Duke University Talent Identification Program, or TIP, which takes pride in helping students reach their highest potential. The program picks students who have “demonstrated advanced aptitudes on grade-level assignments” to take the SAT or ACT along with high school students qualifying for college.

But why would a 7th grader take the ACT? “I wanted to take it for the experience,” said Caroline Locke, one of Luci’s students. “Now I know I need to study math and science more before I take it in high school.” Out of the 25 HMS students who took the test through Duke this year, Carolyn, Zoie Angle, Schuyler Arn, Austin Folsom, Christopher Moon, Justin Ritondo and Kaitlyn Suttles scored high enough to qualify for state recognition. In order to receive State Recognition, students needed to earn scores equal to or better than half of the college-bound seniors who took the same tests. Christopher actually scored

higher than 90% of the collegebound seniors, which qualified him for grand recognition. “It makes you feel kinda happy to be on the level of these older students,” said Schuyler. Justin agreed, “It makes you feel smart.” After taking the test, the students have been receiving information about academic enrichment programs they could take in the summer and advanced classes they could take when they get to Helena High School. No matter what they choose to do from here on out, Luci has faith in her students. “We have a lot of really smart kids here and I’m really proud of them and their achievements.”

Christopher Moon receives Grand Recognition for ACT score of 28 in Duke TIP program

Not only is Christopher Moon in the Gifted and Advanced English Language Arts classes at HMS, but he was also one of the nearly 25 hardworking 7th graders chosen to take the ACT early through the Duke University Talent Identification

Program (TIP) this year. Chris scored high enough to qualify for Duke TIP’s grand recognition. In order to receive Grand Recognition, students need to earn a score equal to or better than 90% of college-bound seniors who took the same tests. With a composite score of 28 on his first time taking the ACT, it’s clear that Chris deserves it. Now that he has taken the ACT, is Chris done until high school? “My parents don’t think I should have to take the test every year,” he explained, but that doesn’t mean he’ll stop studying. Quite the contrary, he said,

“I would like to make a 36 next time.” We think he can do it! With the scores from each individual section of the test, now he knows which subjects to focus on as he continues his school career at HMS and then HHS. “I studied mostly for the math section, but science was harder,” he said. It’s only fitting that’s what subject he will study more intently, as computer science and programming is what Chris wants to do for his career. He may even look into the ACT and SAT prep courses that a lot of high schools offer to students as a crash course for the best way to take these sometimes

tedious standardized tests. “My dad has been researching what colleges look for, and he says they really like the SAT right now, so I’m probably going to take practice SAT tests as well,” said Chris, explaining that he often studies for an hour or more each night on top of his regular homework. But for now, he wants to enjoy his summer and relish in the feeling of achievement from doing so well on the test and recognition from the Duke TIP Grand Recognition Ceremony held at the university the weekend of May 16. Matthew “Chilly”Davis earns swimming scholarship Matthew “Chilly” Davis of Helena has received a scholarship to Birmingham Southern College and will be swimming on their swim team. He is part of the 2014 graduating class at Pelham High School. Matthew started swimming competitively at the age of 10, when he joined Gobblers Knob for what he thought would just be a summer swim. But he immediately showed promise. Being new to the sport, he often had trouble with his goggles, and would stop at the end of the pool during the race to make adjustments– and was still able to win! After enjoying summer league swimming, Matthew decided he wanted to swim year round, so he joined the Magic City Aquatic League (MCAL). January swim practices often took their toll on the young, thin swimmer. Since he was often cold, blue and shivering,

he picked up the nickname “Chilly” and it stuck. Sticking it out only made him a stronger swimmer, and by the end of his first year in the league, his times were fast enough for him to swim in the Southeastern finals in Nashville—while many other swimmers swim for years and never reach that mark. Matthew has competed on several teams during his 9 years of year-round swimming, including MCAL, Hoover Blue Thunder, Greystone YMCA and now Lifetime Swim South. Through the years, he has enjoyed his share of success. He was a part of the swim team that represented Alabama at the US Youth games in Florida, California, and Wisconsin. He was able to bring home Gold metals from all three states. He has also qualified to swim in the Alabama high school state swim meet every year since he was in the 7th grade.

His greatest achievement to date was being asked to join the Birmingham Southern Panthers swim team. He said he will spend his summer before going

Tim completed his undergraduate studies in Sports Medicine from Samford University in 2009. He went on to attend UAB School of Optometry where he was a member of Beta Sigma Kappa National

Optometric Honor Society, VP of the American Optometric Student Association (AOSA), and founder and president of UABSO’s sports vision club. Tim completed his training at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center, Retina Consultants of Alabama, Eye Care Associates of Hoover, and Cool Springs Eye Care of Franklin, TN.

HMS Band wins ﬁrst place at Orlandofest

Band Director Lance Pruitt took the Helena Middle School Band on a trip to Orlando, Florida the weekend of April 24

-27 to compete in the annual Orlandofest Band and Choral competition. The HMS band performed

very well, taking first place in the middle school band division. In the six years the school has existed, the HMS band has

Hanging baskets are back The members of Helena's Beautification Committee convened with Darlene Webb, who represented Myers Nursery, and instructed everyone how to create the hanging baskets that beautify the city's main corridor. Chris Van Cleve, president of the committee, asked the council for funds to reinstate the hanging basket program as part of the committee's annual budget request.

Jacob Rozycki’s Eagle Scout project goes to the dogs After addressing the city council a few weeks back about his planned Eagle Scout project to clean up and improve conditions at the Helena dog shelter, Scout Jacob Rozycki noted, “My family has been working with this shelter for about 3 1/2 years and we have gotten to know the dogs pretty well. We know that they deserve better than what they have now.” The facility, used primarily by Two by Two rescue, currently

houses five to ten dogs. Jacob will expand the pen areas and possibly create a new one. “The current fences are made of different kinds of wire; it has been rigged as best possible for safety for the dogs but is in dire need of improvement.” Working with his dad, Jeff Rozycki and other anticipated volunteers, new poles will be set in concrete to create more stability in the fences. It will also be more uniform and taller. Some accumulated fencing materials are on standby and Jacob says, in the end, the pens will be weeded and he would like to put down hay to keep the

It helps to socialize them and makes it more likely they will be adopted.” The two Australian Shepherd mix dogs pictured with Jacob are believed to be twins. The city has agreed to run electricity to the area, and Jacob plans to add a light inside the storage shed as well as a taller light pole that will illuminate front of the kennel. An accumulation of trash and old plastic tubs from behind the storage shed will be cleaned out. Jacob will need volunteers help first to clean around the area and then extra hands to erect the fence. “The kennels have grown from whatever can be put together; this is a perfect project that is near and dear to our hearts,” added his father. “Our family has fostered over 30 dogs, including several litters of puppies.” Two by Two rescue takes their animals them to PetSmart every Saturday in anticipation of finding new and loving homes. “We bring donated food to

Senior Spotlight — Charles Grifﬁn avid collector of native american artifacts Charles Griffin has been collecting arrowheads and projectile points since he was seven years old. Within a single two-foot expanse on one of his glass display shelves are flint tools that were once used as hammers, awls made from the jawbone of deer, a bone needle in the shape of a hook, and assorted amulets, likely worn as jewelry or good luck charms.

“There is so much to find—like these little bitty pieces of bone tools,” he explained. “People key into looking for the arrowhead shape and they walk over so much, oblivious.” He spoke of the beautiful yellow sandy soil down behind Helena Amphitheater, where many relics have been found along Buck Creek, and said he hunted on one piece of land in Bibb and Chilton County for over forty years. “First I followed the cow trails and plowed fields. When I got on down into Bibb County, I was plowing up thousands of arrowheads in old campsites.” “That was with the blessing of the landowner,” Charles emphasized. “That is about as good as it gets in this part of the country.” This piece of land was shaped “just like an old frying pan” and made a horseshoe that led to thirty acres. “Going down the rocky ridge, the creek is on both sides. On the knoll in the center, which was about 100 yards long, I would come across a fire pit about every twenty feet. I realized this was a long lodge,” he said. “The more you fool with this kind of thing, the more you are forced to learn. There’s no book that can substitute for hands on experience.” Charles’ top acquisitions are fluted Paleo

points, Clovis points, Redstone points, which are very rare, and Cumberland points. He pointed to a Passenger Pigeon feather (the species of which has been extinct for 100 years) and said if he tried to remove it from its protective frame, it would now disintegrate. He has also come across animals that he had preserved by taxidermy, like a baby fawn and an albino squirrel that his mother fed for years. “I’ve always been one to look at the teeth in skulls and jawbones I find,” Charles said. “You’ll see some of the most awful cavities in these skulls. I had to wonder how they treated the pain that must have gone with those cavities—did they smoke or drink something or apply herbs?” He continued, “my most unusual find was a child’s jaw that showed both the baby teeth and adult teeth beneath the gum.

He or she died when both levels of teeth were visible.” Charles is happy that his childhood dream of having a Native American artifact museum has indeed been truly realized over his sixty-five years of collecting.

committees and debated on several resolutions. At the final meeting of the Grand Assembly, the remaining resolutions were introduced and every country

represented had the chance to ask questions. After several minutes, each country voiced a vote of “yes,” “no,” or “abstain” for each resolution.

Overall, the experience provided Helena’s students an opportunity to hone their critical thinking and public speaking skills while having fun!

Scozzaro Law – Helena’s newest hometown attorney Attorney Emmanuel Scozzaro, his wife Kristi and their three children are Helena residents who have decided to relocate their law practice from Bessemer to Old Town Helena. “As you know, Helena is a true gem within our state,” Emmanuel said. “Proudly, my family has called Helena home

for seven years, and we have chosen to locate our business here as well.” He is excited that their two daughters, Josie and Trinity will be a freshman and sophomore, respectively, at the new Helena High School. Their son Kolt is excited to be in his first year playing Helena youth sports, and attends a local Helena preschool. “As a family, we are actively involved in our local church. Our family life is dynamically invested in Helena, and with that as a backdrop we have made the decision to re-locate my law practice to our growing, vibrant city,” he continued. Emmanuel has practiced law for

over 10 years, and also served as an Assistant Attorney General with the State of Alabama from 2007 to 2010. His areas of expertise are adoption, divorce, and other family matters. He also handles general civil and criminal litigation as well as appellate litigation. “For over a decade, I have represented individuals and businesses in times of crisis and success. I will bring strong legal skill and counsel to our community while being accessible to anyone in a comfortable, hometown setting.” Along with the “courtfocused” side of his practice, Emmanuel also has experience in probate matters, estate planning and issues related to a business or

business counsel. Undergraduate Research Helena resident Gregory Roth joined almost 40 students who participated in the University of Montevallo’s 17th annual Undergraduate Research Day,

held recently in Harman Hall on the UM campus. Students across UM were invited to engage in research, scholarship and creative activity with faculty mentors,

demonstrating their research via posters, PowerPoint and oral presentations. The goal of Undergraduate Research is to involve students in their own learning; to develop teamwork and pride; to enhance

interdisciplinary learning; and to share in the exhilaration of discovery. Gregory’s addition to this showcase of research projects was “The History of the Taiwan Relations Act.”

Honor Roll students at Montevallo The University of Montevallo recently named 18 Helena students to the honor roll for the spring semester. To make the President’s List, a student must earn at least a 3.8 grade point average on a 4.0 scale

and be a full-time student at the university. To make the Dean’s List, a student must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and be a full-time student at the university.

Professional Storyteller Delores Hydock After postponement due to weather, Delores Hydock’s free program at the Jane Holmes Public Library was rescheduled on May 8. She told three stories around the theme of money prefacing these by saying, “the best financial advice I can give you is, ‘don’t be a professional storyteller!’” Establishing immediate audience rapport, she asked them to tell what their first jobs were. Replies included Baskin Robbins, Sears Credit

Department, Fannie Mae Candies, and one gentleman who worked as an usher at Harvard’s Symphony Hall. Hydock herself recalls she was paid three cents a day to make up her sisters bed. But, her first real paying job was at Luden’s Candy Factory in Reading, PA (where she grew up) putting the eyes on chocolate bunnies. Tediously boring work, she illustrated to the audience with her signature smile and wrinkled nose. Another story educated the audience about turn-of-thecentury author Bess Streeter Aldridge who wrote short stories and novels, among them one about the bank in her hometown of Elmwood, Nebraska. When asked, “how do you remember your stories?” she revealed: “My house is papered with yellow sticky notes to remind me of what

Maegan Vick awarded Outstanding School Counseling Alumni Award by Montevallo Maegan Vick, the full-time kindergarten and first grade guidance counselor for Helena Elementary School, received accolades last month when she was awarded the Outstanding School Counseling Alumni Award from the University of

Montevallo Alumni Association. This is the second time Meagan has received accolades this school year, as she was also named Elementary Counselor of the Year for 2013 by the Alabama School Counselor Association a few months ago.

City crews, volunteers, businesses help fix and clean up amphitheater playground after flood damage After the April 7 floodwaters subsided in Amphitheater Park, the city saw that the playground equipment had been swept into Buck Creek. City employee Billy Benton retrieved the playground equipment from the point of devastation, and hauled it back to its former location mid-park. Jim Wathen, owner of Jimsco

(handyman services), evaluated the damage as he prepared to make repairs. “I have always offered to take care of the playground equipment since it was installed,” Jim said. “During a normal year, I go down and check it—tighten nuts and bolts and such—several times and keep parts and pieces on hand for small repairs. Fortunately, I have equipment and can also fabricate new pieces, which

was necessary this year.” Jim rebuilt one side of the fort ladder and replaced the bar that held up swings and a rope; now there are three swings it its place. He also got talked to Outdoor Adventures and was able to obtain a slide to replace the former non-repairable plastic one. “This playground was started with funds from Movies in the Park and also money from the tips jar from the beer tent at Buck Creek Festival. Equipment has been added as permitted; now there’s about $20,000 worth for our children to enjoy,” he said. Jim pointed out that over $1000 in mulch and landscaping for the stage front at Buck Creek Festival is donated annually by Greg Eddings at Helena Landscape Supply and Nursery. “During the festival, adults and children

walked right over those plantings trying to get close to the stage.” “I feel people in Helena often do not respect what the small businesses contribute to this community,” Jim said. “And I would ask that those who enjoy its use to keep in mind this playground is for children and not for adults.” The dozen or so picnic tables that also washed away and are now “maybe somewhere in the Cahaba River” were replaced at no cost to the city. “Lowes on Valleydale sold us new picnic tables at cost, and through the contributions of small Helena businesses such as Jay Modi at Helena Chevron,

Helena Landscaping, Helena Mercantile, Bead Biz and The Depot, the tables were paid for and in place soon after the park was usable again.” Some small repairs are still scheduled, according to Wathen and he added that the community can also look forward to future new additions on the Amphitheater park playground. We also commend city crews and volunteers for their cleanup efforts. Those pictured below and many others came down to clean up the park, concession stand, bathrooms and market equipment over two work days.

Shelby County Schools recognize three outstanding digital-age teachers Crystal Watford of Helena Middle School was one of the three first recipients of the new Shelby County Schools OwensYoung Memorial Technology Innovation Award, which recognizes teachers who excel at using technology to improve teaching and learning. Each winner will receive an iPad and a trip to the International Society for Technology in Education Convention in Atlanta this summer. The district will also submit nominations on their behalf for the state’s Chiquita Marbry Memorial Technology

Innovation Award. The Owens-Young Memorial Technology Innovation Award honors two former employees whose work paved the way for teachers to use technology in the classroom. Denise Owens became one of the District’s first Technology Resource Teachers in 1998. Michael Young was a computer programmer who came to work for Shelby County Schools in 2007 as a network technician. “Denise and Michael contributed greatly to our technology program. We’re happy

to establish this award to recognize their past contributions, the hard work our teachers put into being 21st Century educators, and the

ach year, the senior counselor selects six Pelham High School seniors who embody traits making them ideal representatives of their graduating class as well as their community. This year, Laura Cochran is at the helm as the new senior counselor, and she chose the following students share their favorite high school memories and future plans. The day has finally arrived, and we want to commend each and every graduate on this milestone in their lives. Most importantly, we wish the Class of 2014 a future filled with happiness, good health and much success! Our caps are off to each and every member of the Pelham High School Class of 2014!

Breanna Baker Baker: Breanna said her favorite PHS memory was the Senior Night football game. “Most of our senior class came together to cheer on our football team. At the end of the game we ran onto the field together in celebration of our win. It was the first of many last moments with my class.” The person who had the biggest influence on her life is her older sister Britney. “I have watched her graduate from high school and college. She was very successful in school and has inspired me to be the same way.” Her favorite class was AP Environmental Science. “It was fun because it is very interactive–we don’t just learn the material by taking notes, we have labs and go on field trips too. Ms. Essman is my favorite teacher because I know she genuinely cares for her students and prepares us for the future.” She will attend Hampton University and major in business. “I want to go into business management and be in a leadership position in which I oversee companies and their activities.” If Breanna could change anything about high school, she would expose students to different careers. “Most students are uncertain about what to do for the rest of their lives, so I think this class would be very beneficial.” Her advise to freshmen: ‘High school is what you want it to be. You can choose to do well in school by putting forth the effort and hard work.” In 20 years, she wants to be well established in her career, married and with a family. Javier Canales Canales: Javier said, “My most momentous occasion at PHS was being able to play on the Pelham soccer team.” The people who have had the biggest influence on his life are his parents. “My favorite class and teacher was calculus with Mrs. Creel,” he said. He will attend Auburn University and major in architecture. “I envision myself being an architect.” He says, “If I could change anything about high school, I would go back and take classes that would help me out in the future.” Javier’s advice to those students just beginning their high school careers is to study hard and never give up on anything. “In 20 years, I see myself working with my dad in the construction business.” Tristin Sharp Sharp: Tristin loved PHS Friday night football games. “Being able to dance on the football field for halftime is something I will always hold in my heart. I was lucky to be able to do what I love with all the people I love by my side.” Her dance team teammates have had a huge influence on her. “The friendship of every one of my teammates has formed me into the young woman I am today. Being their captain was one of my biggest blessings while in high school.” This year she took a competitive writing class that really improved her writing skills and gave her many scholarship opportunities. “My two favorite teachers are my dance sponsor, Mrs. Russell and my counselor, Mrs. Cochran. They have been amazing role models to me throughout high school.” I will attend the University of Alabama and will major in Human Development and Family Studies, to pursue a career in Marriage and Family Counseling. “I honestly wouldn’t change anything about my high school years. I am thankful for everything that has happened through these four years and I feel blessed to have so many wonderful memories to take with me.” Her advice to freshmen is to take advantage of school while it lasts. “These four years of high school are filled with so many amazing people and memories that I will treasure forever. I am sad that it is coming to an end, but I am excited for what my future holds.” In 20 years, she hopes to be still loving life as much as she does now, with her extraordinary family and friends by her side.

Blake Dunaway Dunaway: Blake said his most momentous memories at PHS were made while playing PHS football on Friday nights. “The people who have had the biggest influence on my life are my parents,” he said. His favorite class and teacher was AP calculus with Mrs. Creel. “I will be attending the University of Alabama and pursuing a degree in chemical engineering, and I envision myself becoming an orthopedic doctor,” Blake said. “If I could change anything about high school, I would create the opportunity for students to take classes that are more career-oriented.” His advice to those starting their high school carrers is to get involved and make all of the small grades count. “In 20 years, I see myself having a family and successful career,” Blake said. Hunter Savage Savage: Hunter said her most momentous occasion at PHS was the last play. “It was so emotional. It was the last play for most of the seniors here, and it really reflected all the hard work we’ve run into this year.” The person with the biggest influence on my life is her mother. “She has been the backbone of everything I do, and she supports every decision of mine.” Hunter has been in theater all four years of high school, so Mrs. Stephenson is her favorite teacher. “She has shaped me into the person I am today.” She will attend Vanderbilt University and major in Psychology, and envisions herself as a psychiatrist. “If I could change anything about high school, I wish I could have been more involved in the beginning of high school; every experience counts.” Her advice to freshmen is ‘Don’t get overwhelmed your first year. It’s a big transition, but every year counts, so don’t get behind early on.” In 20 years, Hunter wants to be a successful psychiatrist, living in a big city, helping the most people she can. Matt McGinnis McGinnis: Matt said, “My most momentous occasion at PHS was the first day of freshman year, because I learned quite a bit that day. While I knew that responsibility was huge in high school, I hadn’t realized the extent of academic competition that would be present at this new place. I’d like to think it made me a better student.” The people who have had the biggest influence on Matt’s life are his parents. “Without my parents, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I hate to admit it, but their influence will play an intricate part in my future. Their lessons and life experiences will prepare me for the tough road ahead. Life isn’t easy, but with their help, I am confident I will be able to work through anything.” Matt says he can’t just name one favorite class or teacher, because there are so many classes and teachers that have positively influenced him over the years. “If I had to choose one teacher, I would choose Mrs. Ross. Every once in a while you come across a teacher who is not only a phenomenal teacher, but also invests her time and focus into her students’ lives. You can tell she teaches to make a difference and she does. Because of her, my favorite class was AP U.S. History,” he said. Matt will be attending the University of North Alabama as a history major. “At this point, I am not sure what career I will choose. All I know is that I love my country and my God, and I want to serve them in any way possible,” he said. If he could change anything about high school, he would try to ensure that all classes use their time wisely and fully. “So much time is wasted in school these days, and time is valuable.” His advise to freshmen is to work hard, work smart, and know that stress is just a distraction. “In 20 years, I hope to have a family and a stable job doing what I love,” Matt said.
