this quality event to our city, and it is enjoyed by people from all over the metro area. The duck race enjoyed a record breaking year raising much needed funds for local groups. I appreciate your efforts, great job everyone!

Greetings to all as summer time events take the stage here in Helena! There are so many great things to do in Helena the next few weeks, here’s just a few: Helena Market Days have returned on Saturday mornings; First Friday (on a Tuesday) with Fireworks happens July 3rd, fun starts at 5 with fireworks starting at 9; Jazz in the Park also returns later in July. I’m sure there are many more things on the calendar, please check the city’s social media pages and website for updates and additions. The recent Helena Miracle League concert featuring Bo Bice and friends was a hit! Great music and fellowship helped kick-start fund raising for this great cause. If you would like to donate or help this group with their efforts to build a playing field for kids with disabilities, contact Project Director Mary Chambliss with the Helena Miracle League on Facebook or online. By the way, I would like to congratulate the Buck Creek Festival organizers and volunteers on one of the best festivals ever. This group of volunteers work tirelessly to bring

I was honored to participate in the Helena High School Graduation exercise this year. This remarkable group of graduates were part of the first class to attend HHS in its first four years of existence. Helena High spring sports had another great year: the baseball team was 6A State Runnerup, and the softball team went deep into their regional tournament. We saw Jonah Hyde place second (after winning at the indoor meet in February) and Justin Stuckey win individual state championships in high jump at the AHSAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships held in Gulf Shores last month, with Kirsen Gardner taking 2nd in discus and shot put. Congratulations to all our graduates and remember, no matter where life leads, you will always have a home in Helena! In other news, we continue work on the new youth soccer field at the Helena Sports Complex. The sod is down, and lighting will go up next. I’m so happy we are able to get this much needed field in service very soon for our youth league. It’s time for Clean Up and Clean

Out Day! Santek will assist us in continuing free oversize garbage drop off day this June 23rd. This free drop off of old household junk not ordinarily picked up with your regular pickup is provided free of charge by the City of Helena and Santek. So clean up and clean out all that oversized junk—just bring those items to the sports complex and Santek will haul it to the landfill for you free! I am very happy to see the new O’Reilly Auto Parts store begin construction on Helena Parkway (Co Rd 17) at the recently razed Trustmark Bank location. O’Reilly will bring new jobs and a retail tax boost to our local economy. O’Reilly will be a great new partner for our community.

I continue to negotiate with ALDOT for road widening on Al-261 and have scheduled regular meetings with ALDOT officials on proposed and approved projects, which include turn lanes at HES and the Trail extension project from the Hillsboro area to the Helena Sports Complex. I hope everyone has a great summer—please be safe, and remember to watch for children playing as you travel throughout our neighborhoods. Please remember to Shop Helena First—it really makes a difference in our city. Best Wishes,

Mark

TELLURIDE

The Buck Creek Festival in May is Helena’s annual “Welcome to Summer” party. A lot of money was raised for many charitable causes. Four Helena High seniors were presented a $2,000 check to split for scholarships at a recent council meeting by chairman Cris Nelson and BCF staff. The festival crowd enjoyed an outdoor food court, rides, games, face painting and hair braiding for the kids, lots of exciting vendor tents with unusual gift ideas and crafts, the Duck Race, of course, and world class entertainment on the Old Town Amphitheater stage. Thanks to all who worked the event and all who came out to support it!

Husky Track Team brings home three medals at AHSAA Outdoor Track Championship Coach Richard Anderson reports that the Husky Track program had several standouts this year, with some seniors earning scholarships and several members medaling at both the AHSAA Indoor Championship in February and the AHSAA Outdoor Championship in May. Stalwart junior shot put and discus thrower Kirsen Gardner came in 2nd this year at the State Outdoor Championship in Gulf Shores after medaling earlier this year throwing the shot put at the Indoor Championships held at the Birmingham Crossplex. In Gulf Shores last month, Helena athletes took the top two spots in the high jump. Senior Justin Stuckey took 1st place with a jump of 6'10" and Junior Jonah Hyde took 2nd with a jump of 6'8". (Jonah won the Indoor High Jump back in February.) Justin Stuckey recently earned a scholarship to continue his track career at Samford University. Congratulation to our Husky track team, and good luck next year! 8 School’s Out 2018 / www.CityOfHelena.org

Helena Middle School Outstanding 8th Graders

Rising Freshmen Huskies

AS SELECTED BY THEIR TEACHERS We asked them a few questions. Here are their replies… Kimberly Bell, daughter of Rebekah Bell: “My favorite memory of my time at Helena Middle School is all my 8th grade pep rallies, being able to be at the front at the drumline is always a lot of fun. My favorite HMS teacher is Miss Day; she is always super funny and not always serious. The most influential person in my life is my mom. She teachers me how to be a good person and to be kind. Not only does she help me when I need it, but we have a motherdaughter bond that many don’t have. My plans for high school are to be in the marching band my four years, make good grades, and just to enjoy it, plus graduate with honors. In ten years I see myself working in a hospital, a hospital for children, saving lives and making miracles happen. I have a good husband and dog, and life is great.” Trey Harless, son of Kim Harless: “My favorite Helena Middle School memory is when art and Spanish went on a field trip to the zoo. I could not be more proud of the team. My favorite HMS teacher is Mrs. Baker, because her class is always fun and I always looked forward to it. My mom is the most influential person in my life because she shows me how to love people through anything. She also shows me how to push through the hard times. In high school, I plan to be on the golf team all four years. I want to be in the honor society and have a really good relationship with God. Ten years from now, I can see myself in college in dentistry school. I can see myself hunting, fishing, and golfing on the weekends.” Sarah Breland, daughter of Teresa Champion and Bill Breland: “The most fond memory I have of Helena Middle School was when I met my best friend, Faith. The first thing she said to me was a question, that’s apparently common for her, she asked, ‘Do you watch Supernatural?’ That was the start of a long lasting friendship. My favorite teacher in HMS would have to be my band teacher Mr. Pruitt. This is mostly because sometimes he will tell really funny stories about his different experiences, but also because he pushes us to perfection with our music. The person who has influenced my life the most would be my Dad. He has taught me many things, but some of the things that really stick are about how I can ready myself for the future. He also has opened a whole new experience to me—MOVIES!!! Hopefully ten years from now I will have a successful job with a house and a dog. Obviously, if I was being more realistic I would still be in college living in a dorm with someone who snores a lot. I could be living under a rock though, you never know.” Kenny Spears, son of Cordell Spears and Melissa Spears: “My favorite memory from Helena Middle School is hanging out at the track meets with my friends. My favorite HMS teacher is Ms. Staab because she is really chill and funny ‘sometimes.’ The most influential person in my life is my step mom, because she’s super cool and I think it’s pretty lit that she works for the FBI. My plans for high school are to become a better runner in XC and track, and to get all A’s.”

Huskies for life!

Monicah Clark, daughter of Judy and Steve Clark: “My favorite Helena Middle School memory is my Spanish I class. Mrs. Wilkins would always make sure that we understand what we are learning, but we would always have fun while doing it! I will definitely miss that class. My favorite HMS teacher is Mrs. Wilkins, she is so easy going and reliable. We always have something to do that is interesting. She prepared me for Spanish II in high school and I know that she cares for me. The people that have influenced and impacted my life the most are my parents. They are the most hardworking and most caring people I know! They push me to do my best and to be a leader. My plans for high school are to be successful, make good memories, and to get on the volleyball team in the tenth grade. In ten years from this moment I see myself as a doctor or a nurse at UAB. I would love to work in the medical field and continue to cure and help God’s people.” J. “Hampton” Neugent, son of Chris and Angie Neugent: “My favorite Helena Middle School memory was the football game when I got to march up with the HHS sousaphone section because I got to experience the best of marching band. My favorite teacher in all of HMS is Ms. Day because she knows the best ways to teach history, which is often over-looked as a subject because it is unnecessary. Probably the most influential person in my life has been Braxton, my ex-youth group leader. He has really helped me get involved with my musical talents in my church and community. In high school I plan to graduate with hopefully a couple of Honors or AP classes under my belt, but those plans are worthless without the Lord’s help and approval. Ten years in the future, I hope to find myself using my talents for the Lord, but only He knows what I will eventually do with the life that he has ultimately planned for me.” Kameryn Hill, daughter of Patricia and Otis Hill: “My favorite Helena Middle School memory would have to be meeting my friends because they’ve stuck by my side the entire time and were one of the reasons I enjoyed my time here. My favorite HMS teacher is definitely Mrs. Wilkins. She is a very good teacher, and she made me become interested in Spanish and the Hispanic culture. The most influential people in my life are my parents, because they push me to be my best and they are always there for me. My plans for high school is to just make good grades and participate in a lot of events and clubs. I see myself being an ESL teacher ten years from now because it’s something I’ve always been interested in.” Lacey Moss, daughter of Michael and Kristi Moss: “My favorite memory at Helena Middle School was the Spanish I field trip because we got to go to the zoo and use our Spanish skills at Cozumel. My favorite HMS teacher is Mrs. Rich, because she is the best English teacher I have ever had. She cares about each and every student. Mrs. Rich is an amazing majorette sponsor and I am so lucky she was over the majorettes. My parents are the most influential people in my life because they always believe in me. They encourage me to do my best in everything I do. Most importantly, they have taught me to believe in God and in every thing I do, do it for the Lord. In high school I plan to continue taking Spanish thanks to Mrs. Wilkins who made Spanish I very enjoyable. I also plan to continue making all A’s so I will be inducted into honor societies. In ten years I see myself getting into medical school fulfilling my dream of becoming a pediatric orthopedic surgeon.”

Building A Field of Dreams Takes a Whole Community There is something extra special about a community that comes together for the good of its people. Former (and soon to be again) Helena resident, lead singer and front man for the musical group, Blood Sweat & Tears (and American Idol rock star), Bo Bice, helped ignite this comeraderie during June Jam at the Old Town Amphitheater June 1st. The Jam benefitted the Helena Miracle League and was held after Helena’s June First Friday. Helena Miracle League is a 501(c)(3) that was formed last December, and Bo was officially named the goodwill ambassador earlier this year to support the group’s efforts to raise the funds needed to pay for a special needs ball field at Joe Tucker Park. June Jam was the official kick start for what is sure to be an awesome and successful year for the Helena Miracle League. June’s First Friday showcased local vendors on Main Street in Old Town and in Amphitheater Park. JQ’s One Man Big Band and the Old Paints serenaded patrons as they passed through various vendor tents that lined Main Street, while food trucks stacked along each side of the path leading into the amphitheater filled everyone’s tummy. At one point, the threat of heavy rains approached Helena, but the night was saved as the clouds eventually passed without dropping any of the wet stuff. After the sun went down, local musicians Jordan Narkates, Sanchez Tanniehill, and 7 STONE RIOT all showcased their talents for the crowd before Bo Bice joined 7 STONE RIOT’s band to keep the crowd rockin’ through the night. The evening was marked as a success by Mary Chambliss of the Helena Miracle League and Kristi Scozarro, one of the organizers for First Friday. With donations still coming in, over $7,000 was raised for Helena Miracle League. There will be several more events this year to help benefit Helena Miracle League including a celebrity softball tournament on June 23rd at 4 p.m. at UAB’s Mary Bowers Field. There is also a bowling tournament at Oak Mountain Lanes in Pelham on August 25th, a golf tournament at Timberline Golf Club in

Calera on October 9th, and a Christmas party next December. The Helena Miracle League will have the opportunity to apply for matching grants once they raise the first $250K, so all proceeds and donations are much needed and greatly appreciated! For more information about how you can help, please visit the Helena Miracle League on Facebook at Helena Miracle League.

Celebrate the 4th on the 3rd in July with Fun & Fireworks in Old Town Helena! The next First Friday event is scheduled for Tuesday, July 3rd (that’s right, First Friday on a Tuesday) and will showcase the annual fireworks show to celebrate the 4th of July holiday. Stop by By George Screen Printing (Alterations by George) at 102 Gunner Lane, behind El Tejano, on CR 52W or at Market Days each Saturday from 8-Noon in Old Town to pick up a commemorative t-shirt for the event. Sales of the t-shirts provide funds to pay for the fireworks! They’re just $20 each, and with every one sold, the fireworks show gets that much bigger! May Helena Beautification Award Winner The Helena Beautification Award for May was awarded to 100 River Crest Circle South, home of Victoria Graham and Zulfi Merchant. What began five years ago as a new home with just two saplings has now been transformed into a lush garden space full of both color and structure. This charming corner lot has become a focal point along the street with the array of stone borders brought in by Zulfi himself. The borders form flower beds that are filled with colorful roses and other perennials. As you stroll through the garden your eye is taken with the color of over sixty roses. “I was inspired by the city’s use of roses throughout Helena, and just had to add some to my own garden” says Victoria. “They are much easier to grow than I ever imagined.” Arborvitaes line the back fence and create a striking backdrop alongside plantings of dogwoods, crepe myrtles and river birch trees. The arbors and trellises are lined with climbing roses, confederate jasmine and an inviting grape arbor. Along the shady side of the house is a collection of low growing Japanese maples. Victoria says they love to use containers and statues in the garden and as you walk through, you see many planted with colorful annuals. “This garden is definitely a labor of love” says Victoria. For more pictures and a full list of the plants at the home, visit www. helenabeautiful.com/award.html.

June Helena Beautification Award Winner Larry and Vickie Bozeman moved to 100 Chestnut Forest Circle eight years ago after Larry promised his grandson they’d move closer to them after he retired. “I originally found Helena while helping my daughter and her family find a home in the Birmingham area. They moved up on South Shades Crest and when I retired and my grandson reminded me of my promise, I knew Helena was the place for us,” said Larry. Once settled in, the couple began building a beautiful landscape with a lush lawn, trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals and even installed a pond. With a mix of sun and shade, they planted the right plants in the right place for maximum impact. From the street, you notice a lovely mailbox planting that draws your eye up to the front entry where planters are tiered on the porch and filled with colorful annuals that create a warm welcome. The side yard boasts a shade garden with plantings of azaleas, crepe myrtles, oak leaf hydrangeas, irises, autumn fern and obedience. Further up the hill, you notice the perennial garden. Planted with a Japanese maple, plantings of sage, bee balm, asters, foxtail ferns and many other plants all provide three seasons of color and interest to the garden. “It’s a labor of love; I love digging in this garden,” says Vickie. “We are the first house at the entrance to the neighborhood, and that comes with some additional responsibility. The first house sets the tone for all others. It’s the first thing you see when you pull in. Out back, you’ll find a custom-built pond. We moved twelve thousand pounds of north Alabama stone to the garden to create this pond. We surrounded it with water loving plants and filled it with water lilies. We’ve also found some room to grow a few tomatoes,” said Larry. All in all, this entire landscape comes together to create harmony and balance not only for the Bozeman’s, but for the entire neighborhood. Thanks for making Helena Beautiful! For more pictures and a full list of the plants planted at the home, 16 School’s Out 2018 / www.CityOfHelena.org

visit www.helenabeautiful.com/award. html. The Beautification Award for July will be accepting nominations until the 25th with the winner being selected and notified at the first of the month. The winner will be able to proudly display a yard sign for the month, have their picture and house published on the Helena Beautification website, Helena Beautiful Facebook page and in the local press. To nominate a home to receive the Helena Beautification Award on July 1, go to www.helenabeautiful.com/award.html and submit the address. The Helena Beautification Board is an appointed board of the Helena City Council. The Board believes that people and places are profoundly connected and thriving communities are rooted in individual responsibility and action. They host a variety of opportunities for the community to come together and serve each year. Events are posted on the Helena Beautiful Facebook page and announced via Twitter at @TweetHomeHelena.

Huskies Baseball Team finishes second in State 6A

Richard Fitts pitches Game 1

Josh Daugherty pitches in relief in Game 3

In a year when Coach PJ Guy’s Huskies were not expected to contend, they overcame almost all the odds. Playing a regular season schedule heavily seeded with 7A competition, Coach Guy and his staff of coaches seasoned and developed a talented group of young men who went out each game with the attitude that they could play with anybody. On the backs of its senior pitchers, Auburn commit Richard Fitts, Bama commit Landon Green, Brooks Tolbert and Josh Daugherty, strong fielding by senior catcher Nick Ragsdale, junior shortstop John Stephen Heacock, 3rd baseman Colton Hood and first baseman/ outfielder Senior Trevor Bell, Nick Ragsdale

Green-Fitts-Hood prior to Game 2

the team won the Area Championship and then had the unmitigated gall to make it all the way to the Championship Series, and ended up 2 points shy of winning a 6A State Title again. That is not to downplay strong efforts this season from underclassmen. In addition to Heacock, Freshman 2nd Baseman Brody Moss, Sophomore outfielder Luke Stamba and Junior outfielder Nick Thompson will all be called on next year to step up and take a leadership role. In this year’s 6A State Championship Series in Montgomery held May 17 and 18, after dropping a heartbreaker in the opener by a score of 4-3 to Hazel Green at historic Paterson Field, with senior Richard Fitts on the mound, the Huskies bounced back the next day. Behind the strong arm of Landon Green, the Huskies opened up day two with a 3-1 victory and everybody felt confident heading into game three at Riverwalk Stadium, home of the Montgomery Biscuits. It was not to be, however, as the Huskies came out on the losing end of a 1-0 John Stephen Heacock just makes plays

This despite strong play from the Huskies and a valiant effort by the pitching combo of seniors Brooks Tolbert and Josh Daugherty and a terrific day in the field, holding Hazel Green to just one run. All things told though, to go from not being expected to contend to earning the number two ranking in the state in 6A is no small feat, and the players and coaches are all to be commended for a valiant effort this season. At Helena, player development is paramount, as was evidenced this season, and this will be required in the coming months as new key players fill in gaps left by graduating senior members of the squad. Some say next year’s team will have to rebuild and develop mightily, but if it’s my money I’m betting, I’m not counting the 2019 Huskies out of anything. When asked about his team this year, Coach P.J. Guy said, “This year was a tribute to our culture and program. Our intention is always to win, and even though we came up a game short of our goal this year, I am proud of our players and coaches for competing to the very end. Belief is a powerful thing.” He added, “Four players

will go on to compete next year at the college level: Landon Green at the University of Alabama; Richard Fitts at Auburn University, Nick Ragsdale at Shelton State, and Colton Hood at Martin Methodist College in Tennessee. Colton, Richard and Nick are

each four year players on our team,” Coach Guy said. “Their leadership, along with that of Landon, will be missed next year, but we are eager for our younger players to take on that role next year. Several of these younger ones started for us this year: Junior John Stephen Heacock Jr, our cleanup hitter, Freshman Brody Moss, 2nd baseman and lead-off hitter, Junior Nick Thompson, our left fielder; and Sophomore Luke Stamba, our right fielder. I can’t wait until next season begins.” Congratulations to the 2018 Huskies on a terrific year, and best of luck to the seniors who will be moving on to the next steps in their lives.

Cinderella Around the World

Cinderella Around the World is a social studies project presented recently at Helena Elementary School by Ms. Sokol’s and Mrs. Talley’s classes, along with Media Specialist, Dutcha Lawson. Art teacher and photographer, Adam Short served as the official photographer. This project is a great hands-on learning experience encompassing literature, culture, and geography. Visitors listened to each “Cinderella” and “Cultural Ambassador” as they presented their information. Students collaborated with each other to research and write a speech to present. Participating students worked hard and were very excited to present to

their peers, parents, teachers, and other visitors. Students also had a parade for students and parents to enjoy this year. It was a fun day and a great learning experience for all involved. Visitors enjoyed traditional foods from every country that students prepared for the project. It is an experience that students will always remember from their elementary school years. The countries/cultures represented this year were: Native American (US), Appalachian (US), Greece, Africa, France, Ancient Egypt, Korea, China, Spain, Russia, Ireland, Mexico, India, Spice Islands, Caribbean Islands, Israel, Persia Hmong, Alaska (US) and the Middle East.

Health & Wellness Trail added at Joe Tucker Park Watson Rice was a Life Scout working on his Eagle Project when we snapped these pictures a couple months back. A member of Boy Scout Troop 532 in Helena, Watson decided that his project would include 10 workout stations along the existing Joe Tucker walking track. The Fit-Trail® system is a group of self-guided and self-paced exercise stations that comfortably accommodate one person or an entire group of people. They are designed to be used while one is walking or jogging on the trail. Illustrations are provided at each station showing the tasks to be performed. They are designed for users of all ages and fitness levels. If individual users are not able to perform a particular exercise, they can simply skip that one and move on to the next station. The trail was completed with the help of volunteers, including

Helena Explorers, Watson’s dad, David, and sponsors who responded to Watson’s calls to action. Thanks, and job well done Watson!

Helena’s Spring Planting Day a Blooming Success! The Helena Beautification Board hosted its annual Spring Planting Day on April 14, 2018. This year’s event focused on installing new plants around the refurbished Welcome Center Pergola. Thirty-seven volunteers showed up to help plant all the new plants. “It’s through events like this that the community can come together to work with a common goal to make our community as beautiful as it is”, said Helena Beautification Board Chairman Chris VanCleave. 75 Drift Roses were planted during the event along with 8 climbing roses that will, over the next couple of years become as one with the pergola. “We selected Drift Roses to plant in the area surrounding the pergola to allow for lots of color on low growing plants”, says Helena Beautification Board Vice Chairman Brian Puckett. “We strive to install sustainable plants that need very little maintenance. A sustainable landscape helps limit the amount of city resources that are needed to maintain the area.”

said Puckett. With each event the Helena Beautification Board hosts; community education is a critical part. This year the event promoted education around planting sustainable roses that require less maintenance and watering. “We want the community to know and see how easy it is to have plants that are easy to take care of and will be beautiful with what God provides in watering”, said VanCleave. For more pictures from the Planting Day event go to http://www.helenabeautiful. com/2018planting.html.

The event was hosted at the Ken R. Penhale Helena Museum by members of the Helena Historic Preservation Committee. Helena resident Jason Redd dressed up as railroad engineer Pete Boyle, the gent who named our city for his sweetheart, Helena Lee (as portrayed by Kara Barr). Jason gave a stirring speech in character to attendees. Councilman Hal Woodman and local schools helped collect items to be placed into the capsule before sealing it up and placing it inside a wall of the museum. Some of the same students that helped collect items will probably be some of the ones helping open it in the year 2040 as they celebrate the City of Helena’s 175th anniversary.

“Our first stop was at the railroad tracks trying to leave Helena!” HIS Principal, Kathy Paiml

Helena Intermediate students experience a 5th grade rite of passage—a trip to the nation’s capitol An excited group of 5th Graders from Helena Intermediate School left Helena May 5th at 5am. Pricipal Kathy Paiml laughed, “And wouldn’t you know it? Our first stop was at the railroad tracks trying to leave Helena!” The five buses carrying students, teachers and parent volunteers travelled all day arriving in Williamsburg, Virginia about 10p.m. The next morning, they left their hotel early to go on a guided tour of historic Jamestown. The next stop was another

hostoric site, Williamsburg, where the group took another guided tour, ate lunch and visited some shops. Later in the day, they walked around Williamsburg on a “Hauntings Tour” where the guide told ghost stories. The group also took a tour of Monticello, the home of the third U.S. President, Thomas Jefferson. They had a lunch of fried chicken (the best meal of the trip according to Mrs. Paiml) at Michie Tavern in Charlottesville before departing for Washington, D.C. The group spent the next day visiting any Smithsonian

Museum they wanted to see. “We got to take pictures outside the White House,” said Mrs. Paiml, “and while we were there, we happened to be on Fox News. My husband saw our shirts and noticed us.” The next day there was a somber visit to Arlington National Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Then on to the Capitol building and took a group photo out front. “That evening, we got to experience Twilight Tattoo, a liveaction military pageant featuring soldiers from the 3rd US Infantry

Regiment 9 and the US Army Band. The next day, the Helena group left for a guided tour of Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, and were able to visit all the monuments and memorials on another guided tour,” said Mrs. Paiml. “We ended the trip with a visit to the Pentagon Memorial site before having dinner and boarding the buses to drive through the night and arrive home safely in Helena at 7:30a.m. (No trains this time, thank goodness!)

Special Helena Elementary students spend a day fishin’ The annual Exceptional Anglers event, Gone Fishin,’ Not Just Wishin’, was held at Oak Mountain State Park recently, and Helena Elementary sent a few of its own exceptional anglers to the event on May 9. The event teaches basic fishing skills to students with special needs from the Shelby and Jefferson county school systems. Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Commissioner Chris Blankenship was a big supporter of the multi-day event. “We are blessed in Alabama with outstanding fishing opportunities,” said Commissioner Blankenship. “From our Department of Conservation managed county fishing lakes to the rivers of north and central Alabama to Mobile Bay, fishing is a wonderful recreational activity for people 28 Winter 2018 / www.CityOfHelena.org

of all ages and abilities. During the event, students were given the opportunity to fish, participate in art projects, perform with local musicians, listen to storytellers, and learn aspects of water safety including the proper use of life jackets. “Community fishing events like this serve many of Alabama’s children, seniors, and participants with special needs,” said Kasie McKee, Fisheries Biologist and Exceptional Anglers event coordinator for the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries. “Without the hard work of our volunteers and the support of the sponsors, this event would not be possible. We are very grateful for their help in enriching the lives of these students.” The Helena students, teachers and volunteers all had a blast and can’t wait for next year!

Huskies pose for a picture after winning Area Title Helena High School Softball repeats as Area Champs! Born in Pittsburgh, Husky Softball Coach Heidi Kouveras moved with her family at about age 7 to the Tampa, Florida area, which is where she grew up. “I’ve always played and coached softball,” she said. After a stellar high school career, she went to Santa Fe Community College and then to Webber International University, where she played shortstop, batted cleanup, and graduated with a degree in general business. After that, Heidi coached for a year at Webber and then went into teaching, having completed the courses necessary to obtain her teaching certificate. She taught career prep courses at Plant City High School in Florida for nine years while also serving as head softball coach at the school. She also coached a travel ball team. Coach Kouveras came to the Birmingham area when she was hired off a telephone interview by the principal at Shades Valley High School at the time. She 30 Winter 2018 / www.CityOfHelena.org

moved to Birmingham in 2012. A friend at Shades Valley knew the principal at the new high school they were building in Helena (Jay Peoples), and the rest, as they say, is history. The first softball coach at Helena High School when it opened its doors, Coach Heidi Kouveras has fielded tough, competitive teams each and every year. With only three seniors on this year’s squad, for example, the team took the Area Title. They lost a heartbreaker to Chelsea in Regional Tournament play at Troy University,or the Team might have gone on to the State Championship Tournament for the third straight year. Seniors Jamie Gregg, Katie Lively and KK Wilson were all key players on this year’s team, and their leadership will be missed, but the fact that there were only three seniors on this year’s team means the future looks bright for Helena High softball with a plethora of young talent on hand. Rising sophomore Peyton Dorriety returns in the circle for the Huskies, as will all but two of the starting infield and outfield. A standout from this year’s team will also return in this year’s ace pitcher, Avery Barnett.

Add to this rising stars from Helena Middle School, a team that went 35-0 in play this season (and 34-1 last season), and you have to have good feelings that next year’s team will be right back in the thick of things. We can’t wait—Go Huskies!!!

Helena High graduate awarded Rising Star scholarship

Thursday, April 26th, Helena High School senior Christopher Adams was awarded one of four $5,000 scholarships from America’s First Federal Credit Union for being nominated to the Rising Star program. The event was held at Birmingham-Southern College, and the sponsors were WBRC 6 and America’s First Federal Credit Union. The selection of the scholarship winners was based on grammar, organization style, and craftsmanship in an essay that students submitted in March. The subject of his essay was financial literacy in various areas ranging from the importance of a good credit score to managing a savings account. The students were all nominated by their school counselors for excellence in academics, leadership, and character. Christopher is attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the fall majoring in Immunology on a pre-med path. He is the son of Bill and Lisa Adams of Helena and the brother of Bethany Hunley of Pelham.

Helena High graduate named to Samford Color Guard Britney Moore was selected to be a member of the 2018-2019 Samford Bulldogs Color Guard, and was awarded a scholarship for being chosen for the team. Britney is a recent graduate of Helena High School and will be attending Samford University in the fall.

Coach William Sexton’s team had a good year. While a State Championship is always the goal, the team won the Shelby County Tournament this year at Ballantrae and won matches against Chelsea, McAdory and Spain Park at Bentbrook, and against Oak Mountain at Inverness. The team finished 2nd in Sectionals at Timberline April 30, which allowed them to go to Sub-State in Spanish Fort May 7. The team didn’t make it to State, but Gabe Brooks made it through as an individual. Two players signed scholarships to compete at the next level; congratulations to Seniors Brock Baker and Alex Dawson, both of whom will compete in Birmingham Southern College colors next year. Sometimes it takes a real man to show off his feminine side, and such was the case in April as a group of real men from Helena put aside their gruff exteriors to don their most feminine attire for a great cause, raising money to help build a special needs ballfield for the Helena Miracle League. Special thanks to all who helped make the pageant a success, including the celebrity judges (Mayor Hall, Stacey Slay-Tollison and Brandon Booth) volunteers and last but not least, The MC for the evening, Helena’s Library Director, Dan Dearing. HMS Husky Havoc 2018 On a rainy and overcast May 23, students at HMS were hard at it having a blast at “Husky Havoc” (formerly H Day). Principal Andrew Gunn joined in the fun, manning the Dunking Tank where students paid a dollar for the right to throw three balls to try and splash him. Mr. Gunn was also spotted careening down the Slip and Slide right along with the kids. This seemed to make the day even more fun than usual for them. Students had all kinds of “armaments” in their arsenals for the big event. With sprinklers running the entire time to insure a proper environment (and a way to quickly clean themselves off), they stocked up with eggs, whipped cream on paper plates, and loads of cooked spaghetti noodles to fling at all-toowilling participants in the “Havoc.” Pizza was going briskly for $1 a slice and Gatorade was selling well when we left. Many thanks to the event’s sponsors, one of which was Oak Mountain Orthodontics and its owner, Dr. Priscila Denny. Dr. Denny supplies all the t-shirts each year for the event, and students have their friends sign them to keep as a nice memento of Husky Havoc 2018.

Mr. Gunn bravely awaits his fate…

Let there be FOAM!!! Best slip ‘n’ slide ever! Dunk your principal for $1? Yes, please!

A School with Deep Helena Roots by Lauren Vogel

School for Amazing Kids celebrated the opening of its fifth preschool in Shelby County with a ribbon cutting ceremony last month. The mayor of Helena, Mark R. Hall, and members of the city council were there to honor the company that has been part of the community for over 35 years. Owners, Cindy and Bob Kuehner, have owned and operated childcare centers for children ages six-weeks to five-years in Helena for over 30 years. He and Cindy (a public school teacher) started a licensed home daycare in their home on Southwind Drive in 1988. They were parents themselves to three boys ages three, two and eight months at the time. For 12 years, while their children were younger, the Kuehner’s

had the best of both worlds by keeping the operation small and in-home. In 2000, it was time to grow. The Kuehners acquired their Helena location on Hwy 17, and began operation as Dayspring Childcare. With that success, the Kuehners then opened a Pelham location in 2006 and two additional locations in Calera and Alabaster in 2007. The school at Dearing Downs marks the fifth school in the School for Amazing Kids family. School for Amazing Kids acquired the facility formerly known as Sunrise Child Care in May, 2017. They invested more than a million dollars for acquisition and extensive upgrades and renovations to transform the school to the level required for Amazing Kids exceptional quality standards. After a year of operation, the school has more than doubled in enrollment, serving over 110 families and growing as School for Amazing Kids, Dearing Downs.

42 School’s Out 2018 / www.CityOfHelena.org

The opening of this location means jobs for Helena residents and high-quality care and education for the children of the community. With five locations in Shelby County, School for Amazing Kids serves over 700 families. Kindergarten teachers love teaching their graduates. The Pre-K program at all five locations focus on preparing both children and parents for success in life, beginning with a smooth transition into the school system. School for Amazing Kids has been connected and committed to the Helena community for more than three decades. They are widely known as the best schools to prepare children for kindergarten as well as providing a

warm, nurturing environment for all children under the age of five. Additionally, children ages 6-12 can now participate in the Summer Explorers’ program that launches this summer.

Andy Healy is elected President of the Helena Business Association A member of the HBA for the past three years, Andy served as Vice President last year and was elected President at the group’s March 2018 meeting. Andy is known for his dedication to bringing recognition to local businesses and bringing his knowledge and expertise to bear in support of local charitable endeavors, such as the Food Truck rallies he has organized for the Miracle League and his input into the HBA’s annual Business Expo. “I want the HBA to be as successful as possible and not only strengthen the business community but also help local businesses to find new and better ways to serve the Helena community,” he said. Andy was born and raised in Mobile, and went on to attend the University of Alabama, where he studied business management. In addition to college, Andy joined the Army Reserves after graduating high school, working in an engineering detachment. In 1987, he elected to go full time active duty in the Army. “I was stationed all over the world during my time in the service,” he said, “from Egypt to the Honduras. It was amazing to actually go into the Pyramid at Giza, see the Sphinx, and experience how different the culture was there as compared to home.” Andy said that Egypt was one of the most Western thinking nations in that part of the world at the time, and as evidence, said that one of his favorite hangouts while stationed there was the Holiday Inn Pyramid Lounge. (Alcohole is forbidden in most Muslim countries.) While there, he called Cairo West AFB home. Andy worked in Army Intel-

ligence, and his job was to collect data on enemy movements, often involving night ops. Next, Andy was assigned to Soto Cano Air Base in rural Honduras, which he said was very different from his time in the Middle East. “The base was a hub of activity and employment for the local economy,” he said, “and we’d often find ourselves joining in with the locals for cookouts and social activities.” From there, he was assigned to Fort Huachuca, Arizona (home of the Buffalo Soldiers in the 1800s), and was assigned to Joint Task Force Bravo. When war broke out in Kuwait and Iraq in the early 90s, he took part in both Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He was deployed to King Khalid Military City, which was like Saudi Arabia’s Pentagon, he said. Andy’s job was performing surveillance of the oil pipelines, and he was part of the first forward non-combat units that went into Iraq to collect data on the enemy. He served until the war was over and then was sent back to Arizona, which is where his military obligation ended. As is the tradition, he was given a Buffalo Soldier statue for his time spent there, a memento he treasures to this day (see picture). After his service time, Andy went to work for TRW, a company who worked on contracts with the Israeli aircraft industry. He was with TRW when they developed the Hunter UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), the forerunner of today’s military drones. It was an extension of what Andy did in the military (gather enemy intelligence) only in a safer way. “A drone can get to places a soldier can’t,” he said. From there, Andy had several more military contracting jobs, including Lockheed Martin, who worked with ATK on the Outrider, another UAV, this time on a U.S. Army and Navy contract. During all this, Andy worked in logistics and became known

as “Radar O’Reilly” (of the M.A.S.H. TV series fame) for his uncanny ability to locate and procure needed materiel. There were several other contracts, and with a total of 24 years between his military time and working on government contracts, Andy was hired at PEMCO, in the Birmingham area, where his job was to liquidate old assets for the company that had formerly been known as Hayes Aircraft with its operations near the Birmingham Airport. “It was interesting going through old boxes there that hadn’t been opened in years. I remember finding an old whiskey bottle dated from the 1930s,” he laughed. He worked there a year before moving to Dothan with Telford Aviation, a group that supported the Army’s missions to Iraq and Afghanistan. A couple of years later, Andy met the woman who would change his life forever while tailgating at a Bama football game with mutual friends. “She changed my life, Andy said, and turned me into the man I am today.” Married in 2009, wife Kari found them a house and community she liked in Helena’s Old Cahaba. Andy got out of military work for good then, working as supply chain manager for US Steel. He stayed at US Steel five years, but when oil prices dropped and the company cut production, Andy found a company with needs for his particular skillset in SMS. SMS is a property management group that manages homeowner’s associations around the Greater Birmingham area. Today, Andy is part owner of the company that makes its home on Yeager Park-

way in neighboring Pelham. Andy and his wife, Kari, have two daughters: Marisa, 13, a rising 8th grader at Helena Middle and Addison, 6, a student at Helena Elementary. Andy says the family enjoys the atmosphere in Helena. “Two favorite places we go here as a family are the Depot Grill and Beef O’Brady’s. You can’t beat the view from either of them! And all the littles shops along Main Street—Kari’s in love with Oh My Sole,” he said. Back to Andy’s work with the HBA, he is involved in entertainment for Helena’s Miracle League, which is working to build a special needs ball field here. He was very helpful in efforts to promote the June 1 June Jam concert that featured Bo Bice, Sanchez Tanniehill, and Helena’s own 7 Stone Riot at the Old Town Amphitheater. Thanks for your service, Andy, and all the best in your work as President of the HBA!

Helena Teen Council visits the State Capitol in Montgomery The Helena Teen Council along with sponsor Alice Lobell and Kristi Scazarro, Adult Liaison, visited the State Capitol and Governor’s Mansion in Montgomery this past February. Students enjoyed the company of Senator Cam Ward and Representatives Matt Fridy and Arnold Mooney during lunch. “Lunch with our senator and representatives fueled my curiosity about our government” said Hayden Claire McCombs. “This trip has been the best the Teen Council has made to date,” said Will Rogers. “Senator Cam Ward and Representative Matt Fridy taught us how the state government works in real life, hands on, rather than just textbook learning.” “I especially enjoyed touring the Governor’s Mansion and learning about the new and old furniture,” shared Melina Dichiara. “It felt special to be in this over 100-year-old home of many of Alabama’s leaders.” For many, the most impressive visual take-away was lying in a circle under the rotunda of the State Capitol. The Alabama State Capitol was completed in 1851, restored in 1992, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the First Confederate Capitol. Built in the Greek Revival style on Capitol Hill, the original location

was known as “Goat Hill.” “Lying on the floor in the Capitol was beautiful,” said KeKe Gardner and Chris Miller echoed, “lying in a circle and looking at the highest point of the Capitol is my favorite memory.” Helena Teen Council consists of Helena teens in grades 1012. The Teen Council attends each bi-monthly meeting of Helena City Council and meets afterwards. Some activities during their meetings have been listening to guest speakers, touring the police and fire stations, and participating in some hands-on activities planned by Dan Dearing, Director of the Helena Public Library. Teen Council members recently worked at the Helena Business Association Expo in March, and can be seen volunteering at First Fridays in Old Town Helena.

Class of 2018

SIX WHO STAND OUT IN THE HUSKIES’

We asked six seniors, selected as exemplary students by the counselors’ office, a few questions. Here are their replies… Laurel Briley Briley, daughter of Henry and Samantha Briley: “My favorite Helena High School memory was January of my senior year. History Club took a field trip to Sloss Furnace, Vulcan, and the Samford Planetarium. Mrs. Lewis is my favorite HHS teacher because she gives off mom vibes and every few weeks we had a day dedicated to drinking coffee and relaxing. The most influential person in my life is my sister Sarah because she’s always understood me and helped me figure things out. This fall I’m going to attend UAB where I will be in the honors college. My major is currently undecided. In 20 years, I hope to have a successful career and a family. I also plan to keep bees.”

Jace Aldrich, Valedictorian, son of Charles and Catherine Aldrich: “My favorite Helena High School memory would have to be being president of the newly started robotics club. The team and I worked really hard to build a working and effective robot over the year and won third in two events. I could not be more proud of the team. My favorite HHS teacher is Coach Parker. He is an amazing teacher who is very dedicated to not only teaching his students AP calculus, but also lessons about life itself. My parents have had the greatest influence in my life due to their undying support. They always have my back and have pushed me to be where I am today. I am attending the University of Alabama this fall to study mechanical engineering and will be joining the Randal Research Scholars program in order to research as an undergraduate. Twenty years from now, I hope to be a valued and successful engineer at a respectful company doing work to better the world and the lives of people in it.” Katie Graham, daughter of Scott and Charlotte Graham: “My favorite Helena High School memories are preforming with the Color Guard and leading them as a captain. We worked so hard at practice and then it all paid off when we would perform. I loved getting to meet so many people in the band and making lifelong friends on the team. One of my favorite HHS teachers is Mrs. Lewis. She prepared me for the AP test but also took time to get to know students and make the class interesting. The most influential people in my life are my parents, who have always encouraged and inspired me to do my best and are my biggest supporters in all my endeavors. Next fall, I plan to attend Samford University where I will major in English and participate in a pre-law program. Twenty years from now, I see myself at a thriving law practice with a family of my own, friends and a couple of dogs.”

James Brakefield, son of Ronald and Deborah Brakefield: “My favorite Helena High School memory is probably the first day of 9th grade. It was the start of a new adventure. My favorite HHS teacher is Ms. Essman. Not only was she a great literature teacher but she taught me how to see things from many different perspectives. My mother has been the most influential person in my life because she taught me the Laurel of perseverance. Next fall, I plan on studying to be a nurse importance practitioner at UAB. Twenty years from now, I plan on working as a nurse practitioner and publishing the books I’m working on.” Hayley Johnson, daughter of Keith and Martie Johnson: “My favorite Helena High School memory is homecoming week and all the activities it includes. It’s my favorite memory because there is something for every student to enjoy and all the students come together to have a good time. There is truly nothing else like it. The most influential person in my life is my mom, Martie Johnson. She is the most selfless and kind woman I know. Not to mention, she’s always encouraging and loving. Next fall, I plan to attend Auburn University to pursue a degree in nursing. After graduating from Auburn I plan to apply to a nurse practitioner program. In twenty years, I see myself working as a pediatric nurse practitioner in a hospital. I also see myself having a family of my own and a few dogs.” Caitlin Rutland, Salutatorian, daughter of Scott and Carin Rutland: “My favorite Helena High School memory is Homecoming week where we spent a day or two out of class celebrating. We played Powder Puff football, competed in Class Olympics, and dressed up according to the theme for each day of the week. My favorite HHS teacher was Coach Parker. He prepared our AP Calculus class to be able to pass and make a five on the AP exam, while incorporating important life lessons. My mother is the most influential person in my life. She has prepared me for my future and taught me how to be a loving, Godly woman. I hope to be like her when I grow up. I plan to attend Auburn University and begin my studies in the Honors College. I hope to be accepted into Auburn’s Harrison School of Pharmacy and become a pharmacist in a hospital. In twenty years, I see myself working in a hospital as a pharmacist. Hopefully I will be married and have two children. In a perfect world, I will be travelling all the time”
