Hello Pelham! It’s hard to believe the holidays are over and it’s back to business as usual, but I’m kind of glad. I don’t know about you, but my wallet is about holidayed out! Hey, if your New Year’s Resolution involves losing weight and getting fit, we have extended the registration to join our Slim Down Challenge another week or two. Pelham Head Football Coach Brett Burnett invites everyone to join him for the four-month program being sponsored by two of our advertisers, Geaux Play Sports Training and Fitness and Shelby Baptist Medical Center. Brett lost nearly 50 lbs the last time he did the program with us, and says he plans to get it off and keep it off this time! Lisa Hall, our head trainer, is excited and ready to help Brett and five or six more of you keep those resolutions! If you’d like to participate, send a recent picture and a little info about yourself to pelhamcitynews@aol.com. The competition is open to anyone living or working in Pelham or Indian Springs. So what are you waiting for, send your information in today! Be sure to also read a little about Geaux Play and its owners on page 4. We planned our cover a month ago, when Pelham native Dabo Swinney was sitting atop the world having won the ACC Championship as head coach at Clemson University and being voted the Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year. When his team collapsed around him in the Orange Bowl, some on our small staff hinted that maybe this is not the best time to feature one of Pelham’s favorite sons. But then, what kind of Pelham person doesn’t believe that one of its own can rise like a Phoenix and show everybody what he’s made of next season? Not the Pelham City News, I can tell you that! Dabo overcame a bad situation on the offensive side of the ball in 2010, made tremendous improvements in 2011, and there is not a doubt in my mind that he will do the same thing this year on the defensive side of the ball. I look for big things in 2012 for the Fighting Dabos!

Congratulations to all of Pelham’s Teachers of the Year! Read a little about them inside this issue. One of them, Leslie Cranford from Valley Intermediate, was also honored with the first Jane Bishop Service Award, given to her at the annual PHS football banquet. Jane was the athletic department secretary who died suddenly last year. This award honors a person that exhibits the spirit of service for which Jane was known. J.T. Ross, a PHS senior, was also honored. More inside. Three anchors of the Pelham Panther baseball team signed letters of intent recently to play Division I baseball. Read a little about these young men in this issue, and see more pictures of the reception held in their honor on our blog at www.pelhamcitynews.com. (Click on the orange icon to go to the blog where the pictures are posted.) Hats off to their parents and coaches for all they do in molding Pelham athletes into great young men. Hey, you don’t hear of many coaches these days who hold weekly bible studies at their homes that 18-year-olds enjoy attending! PHS is special. While we’re talking scholarships, congratulations to Justin Forehand, PHS’s steam rolling offensive tackle, as he agrees to use his blocking skills as a UAB Blazer next season. Finally, on occasion, it’s nice to watch a game and enjoy a beverage out someplace, but too often around here, you leave such a place smelling like an ashtray, which is offensive to most who don’t smoke. Well, there is a new place in town called Shelby’s that you might like to check out. Not only is it non-smoking, but it is brand new inside and features an award-winning chef (Clayton Noto) with a delicious looking menu. Shelby’s offers light, upscale entertainment several nights a week. Owned by Pelham grad Kolby Mele (who also owns Grey Bar and Steele in Birmingham), it is operated by his sister, Angele. Located in the old McAllister’s building behind Walgreens near 31 and Helena Road, they invite you to come out for lunch or dinner—to watch a game on the several flat screens behind the bar or just to sit with friends and enjoy a beverage while listening to some easy listening music. Until next time,

Geaux Play Sports Training and Fitness on a mission
T
he owners of Geaux Play Sports and Fitness in Pelham are people on a mission. Literally. The couple is very active in missions work and say that their fitness business exists to make their missions activities possible. “Lisa and I went to Haiti after their devastating earthquake with a group from Score International based in Chattanooga, Tennessee,” said owner Brad Hall. “Score
is the same group that I go with every year to do baseball camps and missions work with other coaches and players in the Dominican Republic. While we were in Haiti, Lisa and I stayed with Joel Hess, a former US Marine who is now a missionary there and runs the Haiti Gospel Mission. Having kept in touch with Joel since our trip, we discovered that he and his wife, April, had been
searching for an affordable vehicle to buy since theirs broke down recently. We wanted to help out. I called Steve Dobbs (whose son does lessons with me). Steve is the used car sales manager at Tuscaloosa Toyota. He spoke with David DeSantis, the general manager, and they gave us a great deal on a gently used Toyota Sequoia! After getting the vehicle, Lisa and I had to figure out a way to get the vehicle to Miami so it could be shipped to Haiti. We were put in contact with Ron Owens and his wife, Suzanne, who work with SOZO Children’s mission, and they volunteered to drive the vehicle down to Miami for us. And since they were headed that way, Brad had been collecting donated baseball equipment from Geaux Play clients and others in the community who wanted to send it to the Dominican Republic for the youth baseball programs Brad had worked with there. Also partnering in the equipment drive with Brad were Todd McMichen at The People’s Church in Oak Mountain and the Oak Mountain High School Baseball team. It turned out that Score had a shipping container in Tampa that will soon be
shipping to the Dominican Republic, so Lisa, Ron, Suzanne and others loaded most of the baseball equipment in the Sequoia to be dropped off in Tampa on the SUV’s way to Miami killing two birds with one stone. Hats off to Brad and Lisa and all their helpers on all the good work they do. Thanks also to Brad and Lisa for sponsoring this year’s Pelham Slim Down Challenge. If you are looking for a way to lose weight, be sure to send us your information now to sign up! Deadline for this year’s challenge is right around the corner, January 31, 2012. Email your height, weight, age and past experience with trying to lose weight along with a current picture to: PelhamCityNews@aol.com.

opens in Pelham — Shelby’s Friends, who have known each other since school days together at Riverchase Middle and Pelham High, have pooled their talents to bring the “gastropub” concept to a new restaurant/bar called Shelby’s, located on Hwy 261 near 31 in the former McAllister’s location behind Walgreen’s. It features light, upscale entertainment, food and drink in a nonsmoking environment. “We’re excited to create Shelby’s. We’ve been given a great opportunity with this space—we want to put our heart into it and do it right. We plan to be here a long time!” said owner Kolby Mele. “We want Shelby’s to be an experience—a gathering place for friends and family—a laid back neighborhood hangout. When people get to know you as real people, they come to your place and become like a part of your family.” Partners in the endeavor are Kolby’s sister, Angele Mele, Chef Clayton S. Noto, and Scott Price, all pictured above. The menu is small, but one of the best you’ll find with a gourmet twist and an emphasis on fresh ingredients. “Shelby’s has a board menu with daily specials, and we will be a player in the local lunchtime business. We understand that people have limited time on their lunch hour, and we offer an affordable alternative to fast food plus great ambiance. Shelby’s has hand6
crafted beers on tap. “We support local breweries and offer that experience to the local market. Our staff is well-versed and well-educated.” Happy Hour specials, flat screen TVs in the bar area and live acoustic music will complement the late afternoon/ evening ambiance. Executive Chef Clayton Noto has worked in several restaurants and says he has served everything from Beef Carpaccio and sushi to smoked duck and gourmet pizzas. Noto grew up preparing Mediterranean and Italian foods under the influence of his uncle, George Sarris. The interior design is based on Mele’s ten years of experience in the bar business, including Grey Bar on Hwy 280. His styling gives a nod to Innisfree Irish Pub and the good energy that Martini’s Ultra Lounge offers downtown as well as restaurants he has visited in New York and L.A. “We’re all in this because our whole heart is in it,” Mele adds “and we love meeting people, so we invite everyone to come on by.” Check them out on Facebook for daily offerings!

Pelham center for Math and Science adds up to smarter students T
he formats used to teach math and science in K-12 schools nationwide is an area of concern for educators who recognize the need to prepare students for the challenges of our now global economy. AMSTI, the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative, now in about 50 percent of schools statewide, is one of the most comprehensive programs around and was implemented 10 years ago to address the way Math and Science are taught in Alabama. “We are growing. We are seeing changes in test scores and changes of attitude in the classroom teachers,” said Debbie O’Hara, director of AMSTI’s Pelham location. “But we would like to see budget increases that allow us to be in more schools and hire more staff as well.” The Pelham AMSTI site has been active for six years and is part of University of Montevallo’s in-service region. O’Hara is a former math teacher herself who saw how Math in the classroom 8
was not approached in a conceptual way. Students simply memorized and this “does not prepare students for the long haul in our rapidly changing job market.” Steve Ricks, Director of the Alabama State Department of Education spoke about AMSTI at an educators symposium in Europe, which resulted in a contingent of German educators visiting AMSTI. The AMSTI mission is to make Math and Science courses more accessible to all students by training teachers in new teaching methods — an engaged, hands-on, inquiry based method that addresses the new way that students learn. It seeks to make the subjects more attractive to students at all socioeconomic levels. O’Hara mentions three focus areas: Summer training programs for teachers; providing new materials that schools may not otherwise be able to afford; and providing Math and Science specialists, former teachers themselves, who work
directly to support teachers as they implement these new strategies. The specialists can also watch the teacher in the classroom to offer coaching or modeling. They may help the teacher in managing a Science classroom and getting students to work in cooperative groups. And they assist with professional development. AMSTI received grant monies to set up a technology classroom in the Pelham location. This allows a single presenter to reach locations in all five counties without traveling via an Internet-based seminar, already popular in the business arena. Common Core is a set of common standards adopted by Alabama and several other states. In 2012-13 teachers will begin implementing these rigorous standards. At the University of Montevallo, new K-5 teachers are being prepared to be AMSTI trainers. For the past two years, AMSTI has offered a summer camp program for teachers to learn about local educational

opportunities with field trip potential such as the James Wylie Shepherd Observatory in Montevallo. Transition to Work is another program within AMSTI that allows special need students to learn basic skills. The AMSTI warehouse is stacked with hundreds of Science and Math kits that are prepped in house. Teachers receive a kit each quarter, four different kits per year. Assembly and refurbishment of the recycled kits is overseen by Brian Elders. The Science kits give classrooms the ability to have a hands-on demonstration for every concept they are learning; they may build a volcano for example. Kits also include basics such as transparencies, scissors, markers and glue, or even graphing calculators for higher grades. So how successful is the program? “We hear from longtime teachers that this program has revitalized their teaching and their students are excited to learn about Math and Science,” O’Hara said. What more could one ask for?

For tow-truck driver, towing is a way of life
J
eff Scoggins has worked as a towtruck driver for 16 years at Wheeler Wrecker Service and says that often, as with other rescue workers such as policeman, fireman and ambulance drivers, his is sometimes an underappreciated service. “All the drivers I know are conscientious and they care about helping others just as they would want their own family cared for in similar circumstances,” Scoggins says. “We are always available to take care of folks’ needs when they have car trouble and for me, that may mean heading out to Ohio or Florida in the middle of the night.” Jeff and wife, Janie, have two sons, James and Jeffrey, and their family car tag reads TOW N 2. While on vacation in Pigeon Forge with his family, Scoggins, although he didn’t think he had done anything in error, was pulled over. The officer told him he stopped him because he wanted to know what his license plate means. Scoggins and the Sergeant enjoyed talking and the next time the Scoggins family was in Pigeon Forge, the same officer came into the Pancake Pantry to say hello and picked up their bill for breakfast without their knowing.

“He told me, ‘I’m just happy to do that for a tow truck driver,’” Scoggins said. “And that meant a lot to me. He has an understanding beyond the average person of what the jobs entails.” Scoggins wants to visit the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame and Museum in Chattanooga. There are antique wreckers and equipment, industry-related displays of collectible toys, tools, unique equipment and pictorial histories of manufacturers who pioneered the industry worldwide. The first wrecker was fabricated approximately three and a half miles away from the museum at Ernest Holmes Company Automotive. He especially wants to see the memorial, The Wall of the Fallen, inscribed with the names of tow-truck drivers who have been killed in the line of duty across the nation. “I would also like to thank the City of Pelham Police, Fire and Rescue for keeping our city safe and to wish all our men and women in the Armed Forces a Safe and Happy New Year.” Scoggins also mentions that the Move Over Law applies to wreckers as well as fire trucks, police cars and ambulances, as all are considered emergency vehicles. Good advice.

Hats off to PHS, RMS and Valley Elementary / Intermediate Teachers of the Year, 2011-2012!

but was also honored as High School Teacher of the Year at a banquet held by the Greater Shelby County Education Foundation December 1. Schrupp has taught 9th and 11th grade AP U.S. History and served as History Dept. Chair for 2010-2011. He served as PHS Asst. Principal for two years (2008-2009) before making the decision to return to what he is most passionate about—teaching. At PHS, he serves on the Technology Team and is the Asst. Varsity Baseball Coach. He also works with baseball camps and instruction for youth in Pelham and Helena.
Schrupp believes, however, that his greatest contribution to education is his passion and commitment to inspire students to develop a love for history. “To me, if we ever hope to change the world, an appreciation and understanding of history is arguably our most valuable skill,” he says. In Schrupp’s classes students discuss and identify trends, changes over time and cause and effect relationships. Connecting the past to the future is the way to engage students, he believes. His teaching philosophy uses Socratic methodology as he believes that asking questions is the primary gateway to all
knowledge. Jeff Schrupp speaks to what he believes is the greatest public educational challenge of today—closing the achievement gap and building collaborative community partnerships. Schrupp says that school leaders and officials must take the initiative to reach out to parents and to the community, by issuing an invitation to participate, so that communication, respect and trust can be established and built upon. Jeff Schrupp has an MS.ed Degree and Ed.S Degree from UAB and will complete his Ph.D in 2012.
He is also on the School Leadership Team, Math Dept. Head, 8th grade Math Team sponsor, Golf Coach and a member of the Technology Committee. He began teaching at 22 and previously taught in Kansas City and Springfield, Mo., and taught 7th grade Math at RMS. He tutors math and chemistry for grades 6-12. Michael says he was a decent, but not inspired student until he encountered his high school Science and Math teachers. They were old, traditional, strict — but at the same time very academic, and he admired their complete understanding of their subject.
Two teachers showed him that it is not enough to simply pass a class, but rather you need to put all your thoughts, efforts and concentration into that class so as to master it. For four years he took every class those teachers offered — up to Calculus and Physics 4. He graduated high school in the top 10 percent of his class and earned a 30 on the ACT (a perfect 36 on the math section). Michael says, “I owe it all to those two teachers.” “I believe teaching is the job that creates all other jobs,” he says. Michael says it is important to bond with your students and let them know
you care. He feels it is important for his students to respect him not only as an adult but also for the way he leads his daily life. “Students need positive role models, and who better for this than a teacher? If I do my job correctly, then for one whole year I get to show my students what it is to be polite, respectful, honest, hard working, motivated, ambitious, successful, smart, funny and more.” Principal Charles Smith says that Brian Michael is a very dynamic teacher with high standards who successfully models these traits in every class that he teaches at Riverchase.

believes she “was born to teach.” Though she began a career in journalism and broadcasting, she gave it up to marry and have children. Jaley is now 21 and Trey is 17. When her children started school, Cranford decided to return for her MA at Montevallo. During her internship, she developed a new appreciation for mathematics, understanding a subject that had previously “made no sense” to her. This experience allows her to recognize her students today who believe themselves mathematically-challenged, and Cranford is dedicated to helping these kids make the same shift she once made. “Children who are verbal can bring
verbal skills to mathematics and suddenly begin to make connections and understand that math is not procedures to do, but ways of thinking about numbers and patterns and relationships.” Cranford says she wants to help create mathematically powerful students for the 21st Century workplace. One way to do this is to develop “number sense” in students at every grade level, she believes. Number sense is the understanding of numbers, patterns and relationships. “If we are truly interested in helping students be successful in the workplace of the 21st Century, we need to teach them to look for a variety of solutions to any given problem.”
2005. While obtaining her degree at the University of Alabama, she tutored ESL students in the Tuscaloosa area. It was her interaction with those students that solidified her strong connection with the teaching profession. Hargis continues to teach ESL and is also an INOW trainer and grade level chair. She participates in the Math and Reading Vertical Teams and the Family Literacy Program. “All my students come from different backgrounds. Some were born in the United States and some were not. Some come from a single parent
home, some come from a two-parent home, some live with their grandparents and some live in a foster home.” “Some of the kids are on sport teams, some practice piano, some go on elaborate vacations and eat at fancy restaurants while others do not have much to eat at home. No matter what, I want children to be able to put everything aside and feel safe, loved and appreciated. Without that secure, nurturing environment, children will not feel motivated to learn.” Hargis believes in teaching to every level, not just “teaching to the middle.”

Cranford taught 4th and 5th grade at Montevallo Elementary from 2000 to 2005 and 4th and 5th grade at VIS since 2005, where she is an AMSTI Lead Math Teacher, Math School Improvement committee chairman and Literary Magazine representative. “Every child that I touch touches me. The celebration of an ‘ah-hah’ moment when they master a concept, the passion with which they discuss a much-loved book, and the warm hugs at the end of the day are all part of the profession. In truth, teaching is not so much a vocation as an avocation,” Cranford says. “I would teach for free; it is my passion.”
High-end learners will not continue to thrive without being challenged and boredom may create behavior problems, while lower level students will fall further behind, therefore she modifies assignments to meet the needs of each individual student. “Knowing that I am making memories, setting a foundation for success, and instilling positive moral and academic values within each student is all I need in order to know I made the right choice in becoming an educator.” Pelham City News ● Winter 2012 13
Dabo Swinney’s success all about achieving goals
Pelham native talks about his role as Clemson’s head coach, stopping a streak and football in Alabama
I
n just his third year as head coach of the Clemson Tigers, 42-yearold Pelham native Dabo Swinney claimed his first ACC Championship and a berth in the BCS Orange Bowl, which Dabo would be the first to admit was a complete let down. But after similar offensive woes during the 2009 season, a new offensive coordinator hire for 2010 righted the offensive sails and took them to new heights in 2011. Word just in that a similar plan is in place for his young defensive squad for 2012. A coaching search is currently underway to right the ship on the defensive side of the ball. We talked to Dabo by phone just before he left for the Orange Bowl. “I tell people all the time, I’m nothing special at all,” Swinney said. “I hope people can look at me and say, ‘If that guy can do it, I can do it.’ Being the head coach at Clemson doesn’t determine success - achieving goals determines success. You’ve got to dream big, keep your eyes on the Lord, believe in yourself and don’t quit. We live in a world that creates doubt. You have to pick ‘em up and put ‘em down every day. It has taken a lot of perseverance and determination to make a good life. I didn’t dream of being the coach at Clemson. I just dreamed about being a good father and a good husband. I dreamed about having a good job to take care of both. But every step along the way, I set the goal just a little higher, and here I am.”
Swinney led his Tigers to their fourth consecutive bowl game, a streak that includes reaching the Gator Bowl in 2008 while he was serving as head coach on an interim basis. Despite its disappointing conclusion, a 70-33 blistering by West Virginia, the BCS trip caps a season in which his Tigers brought the Auburn Tigers,’ who reigned as national champions, winning streak to an end. Of the September victory, Swinney then quipped, “It seems appropriate that a ‘Bama boy ended that streak.” Roll Tide. “It is what it is,” Swinney says of the remark that riled Auburn fans. “I grew up my whole life in Alabama, 33 years, and I was at Alabama for 13. I have a great respect for Auburn. They were the champions until someone could beat them. Seventeen games that streak stayed intact. At Clemson, we had not beaten them in 60 years—0-14 over that stretch. Breaking that streak was huge, because we did it.” It wouldn’t be the last time the outspoken coach would make waves behind a microphone. More recently, he defended his school against comments mistakenly credited to South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier. Shots alleged to be taken by the “old ball coach” were later correctly attributed to play-by-play man Todd Ellis, but not before Swinney offered his response. “I said what I said to defend Clemson,” Swinney said. “It was
out there all week—in the media, on Twitter. I’m glad he didn’t say it, but as I’ve said, if something was being credited to me that I didn’t say, I’d make sure it was corrected if my name was attached. I don’t feel bad about defending Clemson. But Steve and I are fine. We were at a luncheon together last week.” The comments in question were made by Ellis at the end of the South Carolina/Clemson game. Said former S.C. quarterback Ellis, “As Coach Spurrier says, we aren’t LSU or Alabama, but we ain’t Clemson, folks.” Swinney answered on air by speaking to Clemson’s historic supremacy over their in-state rival, their conference titles and agreed in the end, saying “They are right, they are not Clemson,” but Dabo said it from a corrected perspective. That rivalry is something Swinney hopes is intensified, something he would love to see reach the heights of the Iron Bowl, though he concedes it to be much different as Clemson and South Carolina aren’t in the same conference, let alone the same division. “Alabama and Auburn are really close, historically,” he said. “I don’t have it in front of me, but I’m thinking that it’s separated by about eight games all-time, but our rivalry is heavily led by Clemson. Every year, there are conference implications at stake in the Iron Bowl. This year was a rare time when both teams in our game were
ranked, maybe the fifth time ever. Coach Spurrier won 10 games there for just the second time in the history of their school this year. Maybe we’re building this into more of a national rivalry.” Swinney just won his first ACC Championship, but he isn’t the first local native to lead a team to an ACC Championship. And that bond helped create a special relationship. “My mom was a Woodlawn graduate, and of course Bobby Bowden was, too,” Swinney said. “He knows Mayor Hayes and he’s always asking about Bobby. Obviously, I played for and worked for Coach Bowden’s son, Tommy. Bobby has been a good mentor –when I was placed in the interim position after Tommy left, I had to go down to Tallahassee and play them. And it could have been very awkward, but he made it easy. We’ve talked a lot over the years, and Birmingham always comes up.” Oh and one other accolade this past year for Pelham’s first Division I head football coach—he was named the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year, joining the ranks of great football coaches nationwide. We look for great things out of Dabo Swinney in the years to come. If common sense, intelligence and hard work mean anything, look for Dabo to be right there battling for the ACC crown again next season!

PHS Baseball trio signs Division I scholarships
T
hursday, November 10, was the date that three stalwarts of the Pelham Panther baseball team signed scholarships to play Division I baseball at the next level. Judging from remarks made by the three as each was given the opportunity to speak and those made by coach Jeff Mauldin, it is evident that three sets of parents have done remarkable jobs in raising these young men and have a lot of which to be proud. Each of the players credited their faith and family as well as their coaches and team mates with their success. Coach Mauldin noted that each of these young men had an incredible drive and work ethic which enabled them to achieve the kind of success necessary to earn a scholarship to play on the highest level in college baseball. Hunter Soleymani signed his letter of intent to play baseball at the University of South Alabama; Ty Pierce signed with Jacksonville State University and Parker Curry signed to play with Samford University. A party was held after the signings. Catered by Home Plate Cooking’s Kay Brashier, it featured hot wings and three cakes decorated with each university’s logo. Congratulations guys, and best of luck to each of you as you play out your senior season with the Pelham Panthers!

Gain new customers through an effective website
B
y now every business owner knows that they should have a website. The real question is this though: how effective is your website in bringing new customers to your business? Businesses typically grows from referrals, traditional advertising and internet marketing. Today, more and more, prospective customers are turning to online searches to find businesses to help them find those with who they will do business. With free tools such as Google Analytics, you can visually see: • traffic driven to your site (on a daily basis) • the amount of time people are spending viewing your site • where they are located Once you see your website’s traffic and how prospects are finding your site, then you can begin to customize your site even
more to match what they are shopping for. Remember, the more time a customer spends on your website, the higher your odds of them becoming a customer. So what are these potential customers looking for when they are trying to find services and products online? They are looking for a feel of the company. They will ask themselves questions such as: • What does the business look like? • What will one of the employees that comes to my home look like? • What hours are they open? • Is the company close to me? • Is the website visually appealing, credible, professional, and up-to-date? Most likely, the website that answers these questions the best will win the business. Remember, online customers do not know your company and may only see your website to make a judgment on using your product or services. Once a business understands that they need an internet presence, his or her thought process might go something like this: I know I need a website but budgets are
tight. How much will this cost? We asked local resident Allan Wilson, owner of Wilson Computer Support, this question. According to Allan, his company has created a great solution, a two-page custom designed website for $395. If somebody already has a website that needs updating, Allan urges them to contact him today for a free consultation and estimate to help you get the results that your business requires for an effective online presence. It is important today and grows by leaps
and bounds as each month passes. If you own a business and would like to learn more about how inexpensive and effective a website can be for building your business, give Allan a call today at 985-9942.

Home & Hardware Outlet builds on three decades of success
H
ome & Hardware partners Keith Russell and Danny Lambert, who also owns Lake Home Center in Pell City, have been working in this business and buying products for 30 years — one on the retail side, one working on the wholesale end. “We use the home and hardware name as kind of a catch-all. We have all kinds of products in here,” Russell said. “We deal in closeouts, overruns and special buys.” One visit is proof, as lawnmowers, grills and patio furniture of all styles greet you before you’re even inside the front door. They have a variety of name brand merchandise as well as hardware and tools including table saws and tool chests. The selections change daily! Travis and Trista are available to help you with a smile. Also on the floor are appliances including refrigerators, stoves, generators, paint, electrical lighting and furniturestyle bathroom vanities. A full line of cleaning supplies and even air filters are in stock at about half what you’d pay elsewhere. Also garden implements.

JANE BISHOP
THE BISHOP FAMILY AND LESLIE CRANFORD
The Jane Bishop Service Award is given in memory of Jane Bishop, who worked tirelessly in the athletic office at Pelham High School from 2005 to 2011. Jane was a selfless individual who gave daily to help make everyone’s day brighter. She worked feverishly behind the scenes serving others, always with a smile on her face. Jane is gone, but her memory and her nurturing and caring spirit live on.
This award is presented anually to an individual who exemplifies some of those characteristics that made Jane so special. This year’s honoree is Valley Intermediate Teacher Leslie Cranford, who also happens to be the school’s Teacher of the Year. for 2011-2012. Congratualtions to Leslie on the honor, and thanks to her for all she does to be selected in the first place.
Panthers’ banquet honors J.T. Ross, gives Jane Bishop Service Award
Pelham’s big Justin Forehand commits to UAB
T
he Pelham Panthers recently held their annual football banquet, recognizing their seniors and the families and support staff that surround the Panthers. Senior WR/DB J.T. Ross was honored with the annual academic award after maintaining a 4.2 GPA. Ross has yet to select a college destination, but plans to pursue a pre-med degree wherever he goes. A new honor was designated this season in memory of the late athletic department secretary, Jane Bishop. Valley Intermediate’s Leslie Cranford received the distinction, which honors a singularly selfless individual. Said Coach Brett Burnett of Bishop, “Jane cared so much for these kids—treated them like they were her own. She got a lot of stuff done. She always put others ahead of herself. That’s the type of person we want to honor in her memory.” Pelham finished the 2011 season 5-5, missing the playoffs by virtue of a tiebreaker. “We had some good wins and some tough losses in a tough division,” said Burnett. “I was proud of our progress. We beat a good Vestavia team —we got knocked out of the post season on the tiebreaker. I was proud of our kids for the way they battled. It’s a really great group of seniors and we’re going to miss them a lot.” The banquet came shortly after the announcement that Pelham would play in a new region. The Panthers will face familiar foes in 2012: Thompson, Spain Park and Oak Mountain. And
geographically, the Panthers are quite familiar with new region foe Chelsea, who makes the move up from 5A. But this season, Pelham will play Stanhope Elmore, Wetumpka and defending state champion, Prattville, as part of Region 4. “We’re taking five teams up here and matching them with three down there,” said Burnett. “There’s still four of us, plus Chelsea, who is coming up. And of course Prattville is an excellent program. We’re leaving one type of challenge and taking on a new one. It’s a good opportunity.” The move will affect at least one rivalry, as Vestavia will fall off of the Pelham schedule for the first time during Burnett’s tenure. Northridge will come on to the schedule in their stead. But with Thompson, Oak Mountain and Spain Park remaining in the same region, Burnett expects the most traditional rivalries to stay intact. “It’s still going to be extremely competitive,” he said. “The battle is more amongst ourselves than with who we are playing. We had a chance this year, but we didn’t make the plays we needed to make. Spring practice will begin at Pelham in late April, with a game likely the second or third week of May. The Panthers will begin things in 2012 with a jamboree on August 24 against Tuscaloosa County. The new season will officially kick off on August 31st when the Panthers travel to Paul Bryant.
Pelham High offensive lineman Justin Forehand received his first FBS offer from new UAB head coach Garrick McGee in mid-December. A few days later, the 6-foot-6, 260-pound Forehand, who played tackle for the Panthers, was the Blazers’ 16th commitment for the 2012 signing class and the first to pledge to McGee. Forehand says he likes the idea of playing in college with several other Birmingham area players. UAB now has at least seven players from the Birmingham Metro area in the 2012 commitment class. Others are Briarwood Christian quarterback Ben Craft, Chelsea athlete Jake Ganus, Spain Park defensive backs Devon Brown and Destin Challenger, Pell City tight end/ defensive end Steve Pickren and Homewood wide receiver Nyck Young.

John and Trish Jones love decorating their home for the holidays.
Keeping up with the Joneses tough during holidays
J
ohn and Trish Jones are lighting up for the holidays both inside and out their home at 2037 Chandaway Drive. They are particularly thankful this holiday season to have their son, Staff Sgt. Brandon Jones, Pelham High School Class of 2001, home for the first time in nine years. Brandon and his wife, Courtney, who married in May, will join brother Chris and other “adopted” family members. After completing basic training in San Antonio, Brandon was stationed in London, Utah, Andrews Air Force Base in Washington D.C., and returned from two years in South Korea to his home state, based in Montgomery, just this past March. “I have missed him,” said John. “He was only nineteen when he left. That means no hunting or fishing together for a long time.” “In the early years of his training, we had to ship him Milo’s sweet iced tea, as that just wasn’t something he could find in Texas,” John recalls. John enjoys decorating the yard and house each holiday season in golden white lights. Icicle lights hang from the eaves both front and back and he trims and shapes the large trees growing by the front door to an exacting conical shape before draping them with 24 strands of icicle lights. 26
The back deck is also illuminated, and a white Christmas tree with sea-blue ornaments stands near the pool. The indoor tree is a live spruce and they have different themed ornaments from year to year — angels or musical instruments, for example. A toy train chugs around the tree skirt. John also buys an extra spruce and cuts it up to form the 40-inch wreath that is then lighted to complete the facade ensemble. Their Chandalar cul-de-sac becomes the neighborhood gathering spot on Christmas Eve, as they share food, drink and camaraderie and await Santa’s arrival by fire truck. Caption: The stockings of their extended family are hung by care from the mantle at John and Trish Jones home, including one each for poodles Rocky and Rambo.

Former PHS star Wes Holland finishes collegiate career
P
elham native Wes Holland concluded his football career on November 26 when his North Alabama Lions fell to Delta State in the Division II Round of 16. On December 16, he formally completed his studies, graduating Cum Laude with a degree in General Biology with a concentration in Pre-Medicine. “It didn’t turn out like we hoped this season,” said Wes. “Our main goal here is to win a national championship, and we had the talent to do it. Well, there actually was one more game to be played. Wes participated in the small college version of the senior bowl, and was the leading rusher in it. The Hansen Bowl was January 16, 2012, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Holland’s career took him from Pelham High School to the Naval Academy. After two years, he chose to move back closer to home. “The main reason I chose to leave was for the degree,” said Holland. “I was looking for somewhere I could get into medicine, and it just happened that this was a little closer to home. I also realized that if I did have a shot at playing in the NFL, it was going to be trumped by my military obligation.” He was recruited to UNA by current Louisiana-Lafayette head coach Mark Hudspeth. Just two weeks after Holland had enrolled, Hudspeth left for his current position and Holland found himself playing for Terry Bowden. “It’s been a fun experience,” he said. “It’s fun seeing guys come in who have been well known at other places - guys
like Janoris Jenkins. Preston Parker is playing for the Bucs now. Bobby Bowden came around to see some of our games— it’s quite a coaching family.” After a season in which he led the Lions in rushing and was named 1st team All-Gulf South Conference, Holland says he will spend the much of the next six months training for that NFL shot. If his opportunity doesn’t come, he has a nice backup plan. “If that doesn’t happen, I’ll pursue grad school,” he said. “I’d love to get into UAB so that I can be closer to home. But while I’m training, I’ll also be studying and taking the MCAT.” The Holland family remains close, as Wes ventured to Glendale last January to share in his brother Jake’s national championship run at Auburn. “A lot of people asked me if I was jealous,” he said. “Absolutely not. How could I be? I could not have been more proud of Jake. I had the chance to see him win an SEC Championship and the BCS National Championship. I was ecstatic that I was able to experience that with him.” But, Holland recalls, there was a time when he was more than “big brother” in just age. “I had to rough him up while I could,” he joked. “He’s a little bigger than me now. I always tried to be a great example to all of my siblings. But what they never knew was how much they influenced me.” Best of luck to Wes on his sure to be bright future!

A need for speed
CarCare’s Mike Barrett has spent his life working on cars, and trying to make them go faster
O
n the wall in Mike Barrett’s CarCare automotive shop in Pelham hangs a photo of the first car he built from the ground up: a 1976 Chevy Nova SS. Next came the restoration of a red-hot ‘67 Chevy Chevelle, a muscle car also referred to as a “door car.” It was recognized in World of Wheels magazine and saved for Barrett’s oldest son Cody to drive. The Chevelle was recently sold to a buyer in Australia. Barrett has been racing for 25 years — and loving mechanics even longer. According to his mother, it began when he dismantled all his bicycles. “I’ve always been interested in cars and working on them and wanting to make them go faster,” Barrett says. He once raced motorcycles, as well, and says wife, Jaimee, “it’s been zoom, zoom, zoom ever since.” Barrett bought his first rear end dragster in 1997 and became more seriously involved in bracket racing, a form of drag racing that places a premium on consistency of performance rather than raw speed. An assigned handicap — or ET — reflects the predicted elapsed time over a standard distance racing. The goal is for both cars to reach the finish line at the same time. “There is an element of perfection that is alluring,” Barrett said. “To be able to refine your driving skill and reach the ET in varied track and weather conditions.” There does seem to be a Barrett family tradition of interest in cars. Cody, now 26, followed his father’s lead; Joey, 21, who is a natural behind the wheel, does collision repair; and the youngest son, Dylan, is a soccer player. Barrett did not attend the NHRA

race in Gainesville, Fla., last February, which signifies the beginning of the season, but stayed closer to home doing bigger bracket races held in Montgomery, Steele and, locally, at Holiday Beach. His favorite race is the NHRA Super Comp quarter-mile race — the fastest of the heads-up Super classes with an 8.90 index. This Barrett says, “is a blast!” He likes the challenge of racing against the pros as it “makes him try harder.” Barrett won his Wally (trophy) in 2006, driving the purple dragster he built for himself after acquiring the
frame and body panels from a friend who won them at a Memphis race. It has a Chevrolet 615 cubic inch motor and 235-inch wheelbase with a 4.50 ET in 1/8 mile at 180 mph. In past BNM series three-day events, Barrett finished third and fifth in 2003 and has won prize purses of $5,000, $10,000 and $15,000. After a year of devoting more time to business, Barrett has rebuilt a new engine combination to improve the speed of his car. He is hoping to find time to check out the results at a Super Comp in 2012. Good luck and be safe, Mike!

Jennarosity jewelry both art and craft
R
ebecca Wanagat has been busy showing her hand-stamped sterling silver and copper jewelry at art and craft festivals throughout the area for the last few months. “I started making this jewelry as a way for me to continue to be a stay at home mom and supplement our income,” Rebecca says. “I needed a business that would be flexible and be something that I really had a passion for. I hope that passion comes through each piece that I create.” Her business, called Jennarosity, uses simple, but effective displays to show off the many textured and tarnished organic-styled necklaces, earrings and bracelets she offers. “Jennarosity is named after my daughter Jenna,” Rebecca says. “She wants me to officially change her middle name to Rosity so she can call herself Jenna Rosity. My son Bryce loves to help at my shows and makes sure everyone
knows about the necklaces. Ben, my husband, is my partner in life and in Jennarosity.” Rebecca sets herself apart in the handmade market by offering customized initials, words or motifs and personally hand stamping them onto the metal. For a present for mom, choose multiple discs that can be engraved with children’s initials or names. These can be worn as a charm bracelet or suspended from a ball chain for a necklace styled with casual flair. A made-to-wear birth announcement is the necklace with tiny baby feet that says “coming soon.” Also popular is the I Heart U copper on silver pendant. Rebecca even styles a guitar pick in copper to hang from a leather cord. For more information, visit www. facebook.com/jennarosityllc or jennarosity.etsy.com.
