School’s out and I don’t know about you, but that still brings out the kid in me! Everything’s more casual in summer. Life slows down, everybody’s in a better mood and the world’s a party till school starts back. This summer, you, the citizens of Pelham, will select the people who will lead you for the next four years—a mayor and five city council members. Are you happy and satisfied with your city’s mayor and city council, or do you feel a change is needed? City elections around here have historically drawn an extremely small percentage of registered voters to the polls, especially when compared to state and national elections. City elections will more directly determine things that have an immediate effect on your life than any other, but they do lack the huge media emphasis given to state and federal campaigns. Please do not succumb to this lack of coverage and decide to stay home in August! If you will be out of town, be sure you obtain an absentee ballot and exercise the right that so many have fought and died to give you. Talk about it with your neighbors, educate yourself on who is running and PLEASE VOTE THIS AUGUST! Pelham High graduated another bumper crop of students this year. Twenty-eight Valedictorians, 21 Salutatorians and eight Honor graduates; this class has much of which to be proud! No matter what their futures hold, my prayer is for all of them to find a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment in their lives and look for ways to give back. We have a page of remembrance for a young man who should have graduated this year. Carson Sumpter touched the lives of not only his classmates, but all who were fortunate to know him. Pelham graduates are touching lives all over the country. Here at home, Class of ’89 graduate Paula Davis started a foundation in honor of her late husband,

slain Pelham Police Officer Philip Davis. The foundation recently raised over $17,000, which will be used to benefit families of severely injured or slain public safety officers. Paula’s determination to help others who find themselves where she was after Philip’s death have earned her the nickname “Steel Magnolia,” a term which friends who know her best say fits her to a tee. Hats off to Paula and the work she does. We catch up with a couple of other Pelham graduates in this edition: Chelsea Thrash, the UA coed swept up in last year’s April 27 Tuscaloosa tornado and Tara Tucker Gray, who after being the Face of 68 for several years on Birmingham television, took off for the bright lights of Hollywood. She’s now co-hosting her own show on the Dish Shopping Network and doing great. She talks about coming home to get “a little bit of Alabama” with affection though, and credits her broadcast journalism teacher at Pelham High with her success in television today. Welcome to Coach Sean Anderson who takes over the reins of the Panther baseball team after Jeff Mauldin makes a career move, getting closer to his wife’s home and job in the Trussville area. Nobody knows better than Coach Anderson that he has big shoes to fill. Finally, when summer is in the air, cool tasty treats are what we crave. There’s none better than the tasty treats served up by Ron and Kay Howard at the Huntley Parkway TCBY. There are a lot of frozen yogurt places in the Birmingham area, but none do a better job of serving up a balance of goodness AND affordability. A family of four can leave satisfied for less than $20! I am happy to have them as our newest advertisers and even happier to stop in for a frozen, creamy cup of goodness whenever Kim and I are grocery shopping at Publix. Join us! Enjoy your summer!

he Officer Philip Mahan Davis Memorial Golf Tournament, held May 10 at Ballantrae Golf Club, was a success in every way. The tournament, sponsored by Vulcan Threaded Products and Colonial Pipeline, had its maximum 36 teams participate on a beautiful course with picture perfect weather, great food, a silent auction aimed at sports enthusiasts and numerous volunteers eager to insure the event ran smoothly. It raised over $17,000 for the foundation’s work.

the mood by sharing the story of how she and Philip first met. Paula was born and raised right here in Pelham and graduated from Pelham High School in 1989. Philip was raised in Tuscaloosa, where he graduated from Tuscaloosa County High School. He played trumpet in the marching band, and went on to attend the University of Alabama, where he graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice. After graduation, Philip was a UA officer and later took a position with a security firm in Texas before returning

This year’s memorial golf tournament was the first held by the foundation Paula Davis created, a non-profit designed to assist the families of Shelby County police officers, firefighters and dispatchers catastrophically injured or killed in the line of duty. Paula is the widow of Pelham Police Officer Philip Davis, who was slain December 4, 2009. Paula said she was compelled to give back after everything the police department, city and community did to help her family after the tragedy of Philip’s loss. Their daughter, Sarah, was two and son John was just nine-months-old when Philip was killed. When I read that Paula had forgiven her husband’s murderer and asked her church to pray for his family, too, because they had also lost their husband and father, I thought that this woman must surely be a saint. After meeting her face to face, I realized that this lady is even more amazing than I imagined. Genuinely beautiful inside and out with a generous spirit, Paula is soft-spoken, warm, and always smiling. By all accounts, she is an extraordinary mother who is driven to help other families through their own tragedies. Knowing the pain she endures daily, Paula embodies the term ‘Steel Magnolia,’ a term combining a strong metal like steel with the beauty and gracefulness of a delicate flower, like the magnolia. Paula tearfully said that creating the Philip Mahan Davis Foundation has helped her through the continual grieving process. Then she lightened 4 PelhamCityNews.com / Summer 2012 /

to his home state and settling in Calera. At the time, Paula was working as a police dispatcher there. She remembers the first contact she had with him, when she took his call as a dispatcher. It seems he had called the police department, and explaining that he was new in town, he asked for the number of a local Mexican restaurant, Zapopan. She gave him the number, and the next day, went so far as to put a phone book in his mailbox. (Friends say that is vintage Paula, being the thoughtful person she is. She still smiles the whole time she talks about Philip.) A couple of weeks later, mutual friends formally introduced them,

and she remembers saying, “He’s cute.” Shortly afterwards, he asked her out on a date. “When he picked me up he was dressed so nice, with khakis and a blazer—he looked so handsome.” They went to Copeland’s restaurant on Highway 280, she reminisced, and after they had eaten, he asked her, “What do you want to do next?” She replied, kind of jokingly, (but not really), “Are you ready to meet my parents?” He did go and meet them, and the rest, as they say, is history. Paula said that she and Philip were destined to be together—soulmates you might say. The couple had two beautiful children. Today the oldest, Sarah, is a spunky, quick-witted four-year-old that loves “Polly Pockets.” John is a blond-headed and handsome three-year-old who dearly loves his “Mommy.” Philip was a gentleman through and through. He was very intelligent, possessing a great sense of humor. He taught women’s self-defense classes and cared deeply for others. He had a love so strong for his family and community that he paid the ultimate price—giving up his life to protect and serve the citizens of Pelham. Officer Philip Mahan Davis is gone but will never be forgotten. Paula is going to make sure of that through the foundation she named in his honor. You can find additional information about the Philip Mahan Davis Foundation on its website: www.OfficerPhilipDavis.com. As soon as the recent golf tournament was finished, Paula was off to Washington D.C. to represent our state at the C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc.) national convention and to memorialize Philip. She is the vice-president of the Alabama Chapter. This organization provides resources to assist in rebuilding the lives of surviving families of police officers killed in the line of duty. Our hearts and prayers go out to Philip’s entire family: Paula, their children Sarah and John, mother Barbara Davis, sister Rachel (John) Gould, brothers Michael (Vickie) and Conner (Amy) Davis, as well as many other relatives, friends, coworkers and the community at large on the loss of an exceptional man. We know, however, that this Steel Magnolia, through her relentless work ethic and drive, will touch the lives of many in the years to come. I know she definitely touched mine.

PHS Grad a Future Miss Alabama?

Contest rules cause strange things to happen in some beauty pageants. For instance, to be in the Miss Alabama Pageant, one must win a qualifying pageant beforehand. Since our area does not have one, you will see young ladies from here competing as something other than Miss Pelham. This is the way it was when Liz Cochran won the title of Miss Alabama. It is the same with 2012 Pelham High School graduate Hayley Barber, who competes for the Miss Alabama crown this year as Miss Tennessee Valley. This was Hayley’s second appearance in the Miss Tennessee Valley Pageant in Muscle Shoals, and two seems to be her lucky number as she took the title this year! Hayley, the 18-year-old who plans to attend the University of Alabama in the fall, danced to “Dancin’ Fool.” Hayley graduated as a Valedictorian of her class and was a member of the award-winning Pantherettes dance team. Her personal platform is “Sight for small eyes,” and she has volunteered with UAB’s School of Optometry and Sight Savers of America. This newsletter goes to press as the contestants prepare for the 3-day event June 6-9 at Samford University. Good luck Hayley!

Yard Spotlight: The McCarys Variety is the spice of Patricia and Robert “Bob” McCary’s yard at 2620 Chandalar Lane. For over 30 years, Patricia has nursed along a host of varied perennials that she places wherever she can coax from them their best plant selves, and now the yard is a flowing movement of textures and colors year-round. It’s no longer apparent where the trees lost in the storm of 1990 stood. Her favorite plant is the autumn fern that proliferates throughout the yard, in both shade and sun. In April and May, its fronds have lovely shades of coral. Patricia began introducing pots into her landscape about ten years ago. She found it gives her the ability to rearrange things easily and makes the labor of transplanting more manageable. “I just ‘tump’ them over, pull out the plant and divide it into two or three new plants to place in new pots. I totally rely on my furniture dolly for moving the potted plants throughout the yard,” she explains.

Patricia says she has never liked repetitive beds of a single plant, so she continues to add and try new varieties. She has also created several seating areas throughout. “For the last eleven years of her life, my mother lived with us, and I would bring her out to sit and watch while I gardened. We also had a spot for a hammock.” A large magnolia grandiflora that showed up as a seedling years ago now is a centerpiece, arching its glossy canopy over azaleas (George Tabor pink is a favorite), hydrangeas and hostas. Patricia also has the stately Eddie Aldridge snowflake hydrangea, as well as lace cap varieties and others that bloom pink, blue or purple. The yard features both a hydrangea and an unusual peony with variegated foliage, with the peony blooming a deep purple. Throughout the passing years, the McCary yard has become shadier, so Patricia has added more varieties of shade-tolerant plants, brightening the sunny and border areas with annuals. Rabbits, owls, birdhouses and other statuary, plus the multitude of pots, add interest throughout.

Hosta varieties range from petite, bright green-leaved plants to chartreuse, lime and a deep blue-green largeleaved specimen. Patricia also loves the woodland violets that have created a carpet under her perennials. She says she has managed to snuff out the monkey grass that she no longer cares for with the many pots. Potted plants are also a good solution under trees where roots prohibit in-ground planting. A wide assortment of daylily colors will create the next round of blooms, some early and some late. Patricia suggests to gardeners starting new plants to remember to water generously and that the larger the plant, the better its chances of survival. Treat yourself to a drive by this unique and lovingly maintained yard.

Tara Gray says Pelham High Broadcast team is a Birmingham about?!?” They great place to start! jobas aatlateFoxnight6 innews producer. asked, “Get to Tara Tucker was born in Pleasant Grove, Alabama, and moved to Heatherwood, a subdivision off Valleydale Road, as a child. “At the time,” said Tara, “kids in Heatherwood (now Hoover) were zoned to attend Riverchase Middle School and Pelham High, so that’s where I went.” Many around here may remember her as the multi-talented Pelham High cheerleader back in the 1990s who anchored the school’s news broadcast. (She also dabbled in beauty pageants and went on to become Miss Pelham High School, Miss Alabama Teen USA, and Miss Alabama USA.)Tara says she planned to go on to college to become a lawyer. “At least that’s what I thought until Mrs. Bearden convinced me to tryout for the news broadcast team at PHS” said Tara. “I was hooked from the start,” laughed the former cheerleader and beauty queen. Tara was a natural, with an easy manner on screen that belied her young age and inexperience. “If not for Mrs. Bearden, I’d probably have graduated high school and gone on to law school at Alabama. Most of my family are huge Bama football fans, and I figured early on that is where I’d go.” Instead, her broadcast skills led her to its nemesis, Auburn University. There, the mass communications major (with a double minor in psychology and Spanish) took over the Tigers’ campus newscast, “Eagle Eye Television,” with her amazing on-air talent and determined work ethic. After graduation, Tara was offered a

“My family really thought I’d go on to law school at Alabama after I got my undergraduate degree at Auburn, so when I told them about the job offer, their first questions were: ‘How much does it pay?’ and ‘Does it offer health insurance?’ I had no idea what the answer was to either question, because it didn’t matter to me. I loved TV so much I would have worked for free!” She worked at Fox 6 for two years and then became the “Face of My 68” and a fixture on Birmingham area television before she followed her dreams and the old adage that offers the advice to: “Go west, young (wo)man, go west.” Tara always knew in her heart that she wanted to be a star. If you have Dish Network or Direct TV and are into jewelry, you might notice that the primetime host of Direct Shopping Network is both a jewelry expert and a familiar face. Now known as Tara Gray, this is the same Pelham High grad with the beautiful face and sparkling charisma custom-made for television. “I was getting antsy in Birmingham,” said Tara, “and I wondered if I had what it took to go national. I decided that I had enough money saved to last about a year, so I packed my bags and moved to Los Angeles to give it a try. I figured I’d give it a year and if it didn’t work, I could always come back home and at least know I’d given it a shot,” she remembered. After attending many “cattle calls” for jobs and working random gigs for entities such as the NFL Network, she landed her first full-time job after about six months as host of GemsTV out of Reno, which was looking for a new face. “I auditioned with over 10,000 other people and felt blessed to book the job,” she said.

work!” “Hey, in Alabama, two inches of snow was cause for a state holiday. There, two feet was nothing to be concerned with. That was a learning experience,” she said. And the rest, as they say, is history. After hosting for GemsTV for about six months, she was offered an opportunity with Direct Shopping Network (DSN) back in Los Angeles at about three times her current salary, she said. “That was just too good to pass up.” Tara now hosts five nights of LIVE national primetime television for DSN along with her sidekick, Brook Roberts, who is also a former beauty queen (Miss Oregon). Tara is now living and working in L.A. and when asked how she likes it, Tara said “I have to pinch myself when I wake up every morning. To know that I am living my dream working on national TV, looking out over the L.A. landscape and running into stars everywhere I go. It’s just amazing,” she said. Not that she doesn’t feel a little lost sometimes and experience the need to come back home “for some Alabama,” as she tells her mom. “I come home often,” she says, “even if it’s just for a weekend. There’s something here that really grounds me.” After the devastating tornadoes of last April, where much of her birthplace (Pleasant Grove) was leveled, she felt She also became a certified called to action and founded LA4AL, gemologist during this time, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising money for Alabama tornado because she said she wanted relief. “My uncle still has a dental office to know the ins and outs of everything she sold, and what there,” she said. “Lots of family and she was selling was high-end friends still call Pleasant Grove home, jewelry. “I remember that not so I felt the need to give back to those who had given so much to me.” With the long after moving to Reno national reach she has now with her TV I got up one morning and show and online presence, Tara raised there was about two feet of snow on the ground. I called thousands for the City of Pleasant Grove Relief Fund and the Alabama Governor’s the station and asked what I should do,” she recounted. Emergency Relief Fund. “What are you talking “I still get star struck in L.A.,” she Tara and her chihuahua Savannah on set at DSN

says. “You run into stars everywhere you go. My friend and co-worker, Brook, says my Alabama is showing when I see one of them out and ask for an autograph or ask to have my picture taken with them, but that’s OK. I like that little bit of Alabama. People in Alabama are so genuine, even clerks in convenience stores ask you how you are and really mean it,” she says. “Out here, not so much, it’s much more about what you can do for them.” Today, Tara spends a lot of her spare time speaking to young women about realizing their dreams by believing in themselves. “My mom always taught me that if you believe it, you can achieve it, so I do a lot of believing!” says Tara, whom you can tell practices what she preaches. “I’m not intimidated out here anymore,” she said. “I am truly living my dream.” We are proud of all Tara has accomplished and wish her the best in the future. She and Brook recently signed with a production company, True Entertainment (the same group that produced Oprah’s 25th Anniversary– Behind the Scenes show for OWN), to pitch a reality show to networks about two young women who moved to L.A. from small town America. The show will follow them on their everyday adventures as home-shopping hosts. Sounds like a winner, and with Tara’s exotic look, talent and good karma, don’t be surprised to see “A little bit of Alabama” on your television sometime soon.

Two senior leaders were honored in a ceremony before a home game recently. Center fielder Mary Morgan Dramer and first baseman Erin Whitman ended their high school careers with a nice showing in the regionals a few weeks back. “Both of these ladies were great leaders for us and a huge part of our success this year,” said Coach Amy Sullivan. “At one point, Erin was

#1 nationally in fielding percentage with 283 straight put outs and zero errors. Mary Morgan was a phenomenal center fielder and leadoff batter. She had a knack for getting on base, and with her speed, she was always a threat to steal.” Both finished the season with a batting average above .350. Best of luck to these ladies as they go on to college!

Letslose a proven winner, er, loser. “LetsLose is a Christ-centered organization to promote healthy weight loss,” according to its owner, Anita Gibson. She began the business in 2002 under the name “Advanced Weight Loss Clinics.” Since that time, they have grown to 17 clinics with franchise locations, and they are continuing to grow. One of the primary reasons for that growth is Anita’s passion for helping those with weight loss and nutrition problems. LetsLose reaches into the community by bringing presentations to businesses about weight loss in the workplace. This benefits both the employer and employee. In these presentations, solid, practical advice is given that people can follow while at work or at home. Presentations are also given in schools about nutrition and fitness. Parents are encouraged to attend, and the classes are designed to make getting fit and healthy fun. To reach even further, Anita shares her remarkable Christian testimony. Despite seemingly devastating setbacks in both her professional and personal life, she encourages and inspires others in overcoming challenges. If you would like to book a LetsLose representative to speak at your school or place of business or if you would like Anita to share her testimony at your church, please call 670-5355. There is not a fee for these speaking engagements. PelhamCityNews.com / Summer 2012 / To advertise, call 746-1188 13

Leave Your Pets in Luxury When You Go on Vacation This Summer! Vet techs Rachel Sasser and Lauren Crooks have both been with North Shelby County Animal Hospital for ten years. We spoke with them recently about boarding your pets for summer vacation travel. “Boarding your pet insures that you can relax without worrying about stressing your pet by taking it away from its home environment. It eliminates the hassle of packing all their necessities or the chance that they will get loose in unfamiliar territory,” Rachel told us. North Shelby Animal Hospital offers boarding for dogs of all sizes and cats. The cats are in a separate facility, so they won’t get stressed from hearing the barking dogs. Bedding and food is provided, and each animal is observed for additional needs that may arise. If any new conditions are observed, the owner will be contacted for permission to treat. Boarded pets are kept cool and given plenty of water. They have three daily outings and opportunities for play and exercise. They will be given any regular medications. Baths are available, as well. Lauren reminds that fleas and heartworms are the main threats to your pet in warm weather. A

combination flea/heartworm pill can be given monthly to dogs. “Cats can get heart worms, too,” Rachel says, “contrary to general belief.” Flea medication for cats is applied topically. Along with vet techs Vicki Rich, Haley Strickland and Kim Spencer, Lauren and Rachel are both pet lovers themselves. Lauren and her husband share Logan, their six-year old chocolate lab and gray/silver

Driver Refrigeration Renovates Pelham’s Historic Lee House for Its Headquarters You may have noticed the Driver Refrigeration sign in front of one of Pelham’s oldest structures on Lee Street, the old Lee home place. Pelham’s first city clerk, Willie Mae Dennis, lived there until her death in 2009, at which time the family decided to sell it. Robert and Janice Mitchell purchased the home in October 2010, and work has been in progress for over a year to remodel the c.1895 structure into a new office with all the conveniences of home. It seems fitting that a family with an appreciation of history has taken on giving this old house new life. That fulfills the wishes of the sellers and descendants of the original family members. Robert Mitchell has been with Driver Refrigeration since 1969. The remodeling work was done by Mitchell’s regular crew—Travis Johnson, Danny Blankenship, and Joey Williams—who between them, just happen to have all the skills needed to give this historic home a rebirth. On early inspection, both Robert and Janice climbed up through an attic access, which was inside a closet, so that they could take a peek at the beauty of the original decorative bead board ceilings that had been lowered with a drop ceiling. Where necessary, details were recreated to match or complement the original woodwork and moldings. The original rooms of the house each have a different geometric ceiling pattern with a central medallion encircling new lighting fixtures. The ornate door hinges are original.

Janice has chosen muted historic colors for these rooms. The house was once a “dogtrot” style with a wraparound porch to the back and two outhouses where train passengers from the nearby train depot could use the facilities back in the day. Indoor plumbing and electricity were eventually added, and Willie Mae built on a kitchen, dining room, knotty-pine paneled laundry room along with a second bathroom. Janice brought in antiques of her own for the furnishings where appropriate. The dining room contains a rescued old Hoosier cabinet, an oak china cabinet, and on the drop leaf table sits an old dough bowl belonging to her great-grandmother. The reception room is comfortably furnished with older chairs and accessories and in the adjoining office is the desk of Judge John Lee Sr. used in Pelham’s first courthouse. There is also the desk that Willie Mae Dennis used when she was Pelham’s city clerk, rescued from its resting place in the garage. That very heavy desk is similar to a drop leaf table and will eventually be refinished and repaired. It still bears a taped-on card that says: “Please do not remove. Willie Mae Dennis.” Old carpet was removed to reveal original wooden floors which are still in good shape. One bathroom has been made handicapped accessible and in it, new flooring was installed. “I guess I am just a nostalgic guy,” Robert Mitchell says as he points out the museum-like collection of artifacts and photos that fill his office. Robert relates that both his and Janice’s father worked together in the Bayview coal mines. Robert’s mother was a depot telegraph agent for the railroad. On the lovely restored mantle in his office are her old Morse code telegraph machines as well as a toy train from his childhood and an old railroad lantern belonging to the Lee family. The Mitchells also own the house next door with the rock-covered exterior where two former Pelham mayors, Paul Yeager Sr. and Bert Dunaway, lived at various times in the past. Driver Refrigeration provides refrigeration, heating and cooling services for Jefferson, Shelby and surrounding counties. Their reliable technicians are available for home or office systems and are known to accommodate the needs of their longtime and older customers in any way possible.

Pelham teams stand out at Battle of the Books

The sixth annual Battle of the Books (BOB) for intermediate, middle, and high school students was held April 17th (intermediate), April 18th (middle), and April 19th (high) at the Shelby County Instructional Services Center. Shelby County’s 11 elementary, 10 middle, and eight high schools fielded teams, and each team competed in multiple rounds, answering questions about the books that were read. Teams practiced

weekly before and after school to hone their skills for this scholars-bowl style competition. In addition to weekly discussions and practice, students also reflected on their reading through team blogs and wikis, online discussion forums where they posted their thoughts on the books and formulate potential questions for practice sessions.

2012 Battle of the Books Winners from Pelham

Barnes & Noble and Scholastic, Inc. graciously agreed to provide heavily discounted prices on the titles. Additional fund raisers paid for T-shirts for all participants as well as snacks and lunches for the three days of competition.

W

hen Carson James Sumpter gave his testimony at a revival called The Awakening in 2010 he said, “When I first found out I had cancer, I got mad at God. But then I realized it’s a privilege because God doesn’t give everyone an opportunity to have this kind of impact on others.” “Music is my life; it’s who I am; it’s kept me going. I hope my music and my story will be an inspiration to many people as I continue my journey in life as an artist.” “Carson did more in 17 years than many folks do in 70,” Jim Sumpter said of his son at the North Shelby Relay For Life May 18 at Pelham High. That date would have been Carson’s last day of high school, had he not “received his wings” last July 12. At the time of his diagnosis of osteosarcoma in 2010, Carson had just finished making his first CD, called Patience. Carson’s very first musical performance was in 4th grade when he played Wipeout; a later highlight was opening for Taylor Hicks at his Toys for Tots benefit and there were too many others to mention. Carson lived to touch others with music. Writing his own songs, playing guitar and drums in the praise band at Westwood Baptist and continuing to march in the PHS drum line all contributed to his legacy of inspiration. He was the first individual to receive the Spirit Stick presented

by the junior class in 2011. “Even as our family experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows after Carson’s diagnosis, he would want every one of us to remember that ‘your attitude determines your altitude,’” said Jim. “He would want each person to know that music can get you through the day. And he would say, ‘Find a cause and pour your heart into it.’” At Relay for Life, the moving performance of the PHS dance ensemble to the song Into the Light by In This Moment brought the entire crowd watching into a moment of heart-opening remembrance for their friend, Carson James Sumpter. A member of that team was Carson’s special friend, graduating PHS senior Maddie Gathings. “I am so thankful for the gift and privilege to call Carson my son. He taught me how to be a better person,” said his mother Kim Mixon McBrayer. “Carson had a unique spirit about him—just to be in his presence was healing—he had this effect on many people.” “Carson had cancer, but cancer never had Carson,” Kim told the crowd at North Shelby Relay for Life. Carson’s family has chosen to remember him with a granite bench at Southern Heritage with the word PATIENCE engraved on it. The bench sits right on the lake under some crepe myrtles near the fountains and a waterfall. Family members sometimes see a rainbow arcing over the waters when they visit his bench.

The

Future is in Good Hands

With Pelham’ High School’s Graduating Class of 2012

Each year, Senior Counselor Amanda Waldrup (moving on herself this July after serving PHS students the past 12 years), selects six students that represent the graduating class well. The students each share their favorite memories from PHS and fill us in on their future plans. The day has finally arrived, and each and every graduate should be commended for this major milestone in their lives—earning their high school diploma. Now with so many options and opportunities from which to choose, our wishes for all of them is a future filled with happiness, good health and much success! Our (graduation) caps are off to you—PHS Class of 2012! Elizabeth Ross (daughter of Lee and Gloria Ross) Elizabeth said her favorite PHS memory was “when Carson Sumpter won the spirit stick at the Homecoming pep rally last year.” Her favorite PHS teacher was Mrs. Katy Burnside. “She really prepared me for college,” Elizabeth says, “and I became a better student because of her class.” When Elizabeth was asked who the greatest influence in her life has been? She replied, “My parents. They have taught me right from wrong, and they have always been there for me when I needed them.” This fall, Elizabeth plans to attend the University of Alabama and major in Pre-Physical Therapy. Elizabeth shares her vision 20 years into the future: “I hope to have a successful career as a physical therapist and to have started my own family.”

J.T. Ross (son of Donna and Jason Ross) J.T. said his favorite memory at PHS was “starting on the varsity football team his 10th grade year against Vestavia Hills and winning in overtime. Also, defeating Vestavia this year in overtime.” Mrs. Austin, who taught 9th grade Geometry, was J.T.’s favorite teacher at PHS. “She made math interesting,” he said. “My parents have been the greatest influence in my life,” J.T. said. “ They have taught me to put God first. They have set high expectations for me and encouraged me to be a good person.” J.T.’s future plans are to attend Duke University and major in biology/pre-med and run track. “In the year 2032, I see myself being a well-rounded, happy person, who has reached my goal of being an orthopedic surgeon,” J.T. says. “I want to be a philanthropist who helps the less fortunate.”

Ty Pierce (son of Bill and Freida Pierce) “My favorite memory would be all four years that I played baseball,” Ty said, “and then being able to sign a scholarship to play in college. That was an exciting night!” Ty’s favorite teachers at PHS were Mrs. Russell, who taught 9th grade English, and Coach Montgomery. “Both of these teachers made class very enjoyable and students were able to get along with them very well.” Ty said, “The great influences in my life have been my dad and granddad. They both always pushed me to be the best I could be in school and in sports.” Following graduation, Ty will be attending Jacksonville State University to play baseball. “My major has been narrowed down to a couple, but I’m still undecided.” Fast-forward 20 years to the year 2032, “I see myself working and having a family. Hopefully I’ll be making a lot of money,” Ty concluded.

Nat Smith (son of Jeni Warden and Ernest Smith) Nat’s favorite PHS memory was performing for the first time in the cafeteria at Write Night 2010. Mrs. Creel was his favorite PHS teacher because “She taught me Calculus,” Nat said. The person with the greatest influence on Nat’s life is T.S. Eliot “because his poems have influenced nearly every song I’ve ever written. He has a great writing style.” Nat’s future plans include going to UAB, majoring in Music Technology and playing music around town. When asked where he envisioned his life 20 years from now, Nat replied, “Age 38, in a mirror. Also working in a recording studio or for a video game developer and writing music.”

Scarlett Lara-Alcántara (daughter of Lidia AlcántaraElizalde and Juan Manuel Lara Rodgriquez) “The Great Moonbuggy race was the best experience I had at Pelham High School,” said Scarlett, who added, “Mrs. Connie Nolen is the most supportive and caring teacher I have ever had. She taught me the power words hold, and that every voice is important. Thank you Mrs. Nolen. My mother has been the most influential person in my life,” Scarlett declared. “She has worked so hard, and all her struggles have motivated me to succeed and provide a better life for her.” This fall Scarlett will attend the University of South Alabama where she plans to major in International Relations and minor in Spanish. She said her ultimate goal after graduating is to attend Cumberland Law School and specialize in immigration law. “Twenty years from now, I hope to have opened a non-profit organization to help Hispanic students, regardless of immigration status, attend a university. I would also like to work with Alabama legislators in hopes of improving their views concerning immigration laws.”

Rachel Randol (daughter of Melinda Randol) “Without sounding cliche,” Rachel says, “my favorite memory of PHS is spending time with my friends and enjoying being a kid before I have to go off into the ‘real world’” Kristin Self is Rachel’s favorite teacher at PHS. “She is very down to earth, and we had a lot of the same interests,” she said. “My mother has been the biggest influence in my life,” Rachel says. “She has taught me how to be a strong, caring and independent woman, and I am very grateful for that. She is the best person I know,” she concluded. “This fall, I plan to go to the University of South Alabama to study Psychology,” Rachel shares. “I hope to one day be a comparative psychologist (the study of animals).” Where does she see herself 20 years in the future? “I hope to be traveling to study the natural habitats of endangered animals,” Rachel said.

Sounds like another great bunch of graduates about to take on the world. Good luck to all!

www.sgtgolf.com Let Southern Golf improve your game!

Southern Golf has been in Pelham over 12 years. They recently moved to what was formerly the Strike Fore building. They partnered with Strike Fore (who provide batting cages and carpet golf) in what has proven to be a great combination. The outside of the facility contains batting cages and a carpet golf course with undulations, twists and turns making the course challenging for any age. The batting cages are great for tuning up your swing, getting prepared for the big game, relieving stress, or just having fun. There are four cages that pitch both baseballs and softballs. Speeds range from under 30 mph to over 80, making them functional for young children to old pros. If you don’t have your own bat, helmet or putter, no worries…Southern Golf has everything available for you at no extra charge. The inside of Southern Golf contains a large selection of clubs, grips, shafts, balls and accessories, with two areas designated for club fitting. Both hitting areas are equipped with state of the art launch monitors instrumental in improving the hitting process. The monitors analyze critical data about what goes on in a person’s golf swing in order to match club heads and shafts to each individual golfer. Southern Golf also offers indoor lessons, utilizing the launch monitors and video equipment. What separates Southern Golf from other retailers is that they offer a large selection of golf club components (club heads, shafts, grips). They carefully assemble each club based on the individual’s needs. Same day service is offered for assembly and repair. Southern Golf is proud to be the Birmingham area’s only member of True Tempers PFC (Performance Hitting Center) Group. This allows Southern Golf access to tour issue shafts that very few can get their hands on. They feel that the shaft is the most important part of the golf club and have the experience and technology needed to get the right shaft on your clubs. If you’re looking to get the most out of your golf game, need lessons, club repairs, or a custom designed club, Southern Golf is the place to be.

Manners in Motion sets a high standard when it comes to dog training!

Manners in Motion is one of the few dog training and day care facilities in Shelby County. Barbara Skalka, the owner, has over thirty years experience in dog training and started her business out of a love for animals and a desire to see individuals have happy relationships with their dogs. Manners in Motion utilizes the “click and treat” method when training dogs in agility, fly ball, herding, obedience, tracking and nose work. Unlike most other training and dog care facilities, they accept any breed and do not advocate the use of choke collars, choke chains and pinch collars. These are strictly forbidden. With dogs having the capacity to understand approximately 300 words, signs and signals (which is about the same as a two- to three-year-old child) their slogan of “If you don’t train ‘em, don’t blame ‘em,” is very appropriate. A well trained dog benefits everyone and strengthens the bond between a dog and his owner. It builds communication, understanding and mutual respect. Manners in Motion also provides day care service. During day care, your dog will enjoy exercise, socialization with other people and dogs and will be relieved from stress they may experience due to boredom. While your dog will be enjoying a 4,500 square foot indoor play area and 3,000 square foot outdoor area complete with three pools, decks and covered areas, you will enjoy peace of mind, knowing your dog is safe in the loving hands of a highly trained staff.

Other services provided by Manners in Motion include behavioral consultation, overnight care Monday through Thursday, and they are proud to display their training expertise at community events. If you want your dog to walk by your side while on a leash, to come when you call and obey your commands, but he doesn’t, just remember...”If you don’t train ‘em, don’t blame ‘em.” Space in classes and in day care is limited, so call Manners in Motion today at 621-6730.

Pelham TCBY owners survive harrowing accident Now back to dishing out those delicious frozen yogurt treats!

I

t is the perfect time of year for a frosty, smooth frozen yogurt treat from our local TCBY. It’s near the newest Publix on Huntley Parkway (across CR 52 from the Racquet Club). After meeting new owners Ron and Kay Howard, it is easy to see why so many loyal customers say that the Howards’ stores are the best they’ve visited! Together with three of their four sons, the Howards “run the show” each day, giving customers more than their money’s worth and insuring their visit is an enjoyable one. They give the kind of service you’d expect when an owner is running the day-to-day operations. Ron and Kay Howard purchased their first TCBY in Homewood seven years ago. They have since opened two other locations, one on Highway 280 and the latest on Huntley Parkway in Pelham. Their formula for success is forging lasting relationships with customers by treating them as guests and providing them with great tasting, healthy yogurt and smoothies. It was exciting for the Howards to see their dreams materialize. However, on July 5 of last year, all of that nearly came screeching to a halt when Ron and Kay were involved in a horrific automobile accident. When Kay looked over and saw Ron, she says she thought he was dead. His body was lifeless, but when the paramedics arrived, they discovered he was breathing and barely clinging to life. Ron had to be cut from the truck after which he was air lifted to UAB. His injuries were extensive; he had two surgeries within 24 hours, with rods placed in his leg and his jaw was operated on

(205) 620-1200 internally. He spent four days in the ICU. His jaws were wired together for six weeks, during which time he lived on milkshakes and yogurt (TCBY of course). Kay was fortunate to escape with bruises all over. Ron came out with some neurological issues, but you’d hardly know it, talking to him today. “I get better everyday,” he said. Business never suffered thanks to loyal employees who came in and took over at a moment’s notice, keeping the locations running smoothly. “They all did an excellent job,” said Kay. Customers who learned of the accident showed their support though an outpouring of prayers and well wishes. The Howards want to express their heartfelt appreciation to their employees and to the community for their support, love, prayers, cards and words of encouragement as they struggled through this life altering event. We are happy to report that Ron is back working at full capacity. Some days there’s pain, but Ron says there is also much joy in having the privilege of serving their wonderful customers. Stop by the Pelham store soon (that’s where Ron and Kay hang out) to treat yourself not only to “The Country’s Best Yogurt” but also to meet two wonderful people who hold their customers very dear to their heart. And that TCBY frozen yogurt is soooooooo good!
