Dave Smith Unless you suffer from seasonal allergies (and heck, with drugs like Astelin and Zyrtec, even if you do) you have to love this early spring we’re experiencing. Everybody seems friendlier, more outgoing and I even sleep better. I think it must be the extra vitamin D we get from being out in the sun more, even if it’s for just a few minutes a day. The extra daylight we get from daylight savings time helps, too. As this newsletter leaves my desktop for the printer, our Pelham Panther baseball and softball teams are displaying exceptional prowess on the field. The baseball team stands undefeated at 20-0 and the softball team has only one loss at the midway point of the 2012 season. It looks like we have a hungry at PHS this year. Best wishes as these young men and women come down the stretch. After the primary elections for Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice, we’re left with a choice of Harry Lyon or Roy Moore. It would seem a legitimate opportunity exists for a qualified independent to gain this seat if there is one who wants it. It’ll be interesting to watch. Speaking of elections, if the fireworks going off at city hall are any indication, the August municipal elections will be some of the most interesting in the short history of the city. With lawsuits flying hither and yon, there are sure to be some heated debates leading up to August. Municipal elections around here historically feature some of the lowest voter turnouts with only about 20 percent of registered voters typically showing up to cast their ballots. I am thinking that maybe this year, it will be different. I hope so. Whatever side of the fence you are on, I urge everyone to be sure you are registered to vote and then to exercise your right as Pelham residents and American citizens to do just that! Pelham said goodbye to a favorite son this month as 2nd Lieutenant Matthew Blount lost his three-year battle with two

different types of cancer. He leaves behind a wife, Melinda; a daughter, Audrey Faith; two brothers, A.J. and David; his mother, Terrie and father, CSM (retired) Barry Blount. My prayers and condolences to the family on their loss. More on page 24. Pelham lost two other dear friends in February: Longtime dispatcher for the Pelham Police Department, Michael Allen Wilkinson, passed away. He had worked with the police department for 22 years. And the proprietor of Pelham’s oldest restaurant, Fran Driver, died. She had owned and operated “Fran’s” on Pelham Parkway for over 50 years. They will both be missed by their families and their many friends and coworkers. Prayers to all. I usually try to include a few items you might enjoy outside of Pelham, and in this issue there are two. For those with young children who enjoy fishing, Bass Pro Shops in nearby Leeds is having several Easter Egg Hunts, and they’re all free. Details can be found on page 13 along with other egg hunts taking place around the city. And for those of you who used to enjoy eating and enjoying a cold beverage on the big deck overlooking the creek and dam at Incahoots in Old Town Helena, Papa Saia’s has moved their eatery and bar there from Alabaster. The Tiki Bar is open again, and they have live entertainment most nights. They have added several seafood items to their menu, too. The view and atmosphere is, as always, incomparable. There is a no smoking policy inside the restaurant, and that is a plus in my view. Crawfish Boils coming soon! Watch for them on Papa Saia’s Facebook page. There is a big fund raiser concert for youth athletics in the area at the Pelham Civic Complex May 4. Young people who are fans of the “Hannah Montana” series may be familiar with the singer IYAZ. Details on page 29. Until the next issue,

Geaux Play owner Lisa Hall with three of this year’s challengers, l-r: Diane Lane, Jimbo Barrett and Brett Burnett. Inset is challenger Lane Wilson.

his year’s Slim Down Challenge in Pelham features two contestants who can say they have been there and done that before: Pelham High Football Coach Brett Burnett and Barrett Automotive owner Jimbo Barrett participated a few years back and both lost around 50 lbs each, but each says they did not maintain the habits that got them to their healthier sizes. “I hurt my back and got out of the routine,” said Jimbo. It is easy to do. Coach Burnett has knee issues that have him working “bone-on-bone” in one knee, and it is easy to skip the exercise when dealing with that. Grandmother Diane Lane is a first time challenger as is jailer Lane Wilson. In their first two weeks, they have racked up some impressive results: Brett has lost 17 lbs. “It’s been tough, but doable,” said Brett. “Lisa customizes the workouts so anybody can start wherever they are.” Jimbo has lost 15 lbs. and recently started taking some of the group exercises at Geaux Play, including his first

spin class and their Butts and Guts class. Diane lost 8 lbs her first two weeks which included time spent away on vacation. She, too, is attending some of Geaux Play’s spin classes and last week walked and jogged her first mile and a half! Diane says she is getting ready for her grandson’s wedding and an upcoming class reunion. She is going to look fantastic and more importantly, feel great! Lane started out at 535 lbs! He reports he has lost one pants size and is feeling great! He finished a 1.2 mile walk on March 15, and Lisa talked with him about doing the Rumpshaker 5K on March 31 which benefits colon cancer research. In fact, Lane’s mom died of colon cancer, so the group all decided to participate—teamwork in action! Be sure to encourage all of the challengers when you see them out. Cynthia Gould, from Channel 42, is going to be tracking their progress, so tune in to Channel 42 and check them out!

Don’t have time to cook? Then you need to check out Lisa’s new meal plan. She says she has had this checked out by top nutritionists, all of whom highly recommend this plan. This is a great way to eat non-processed, healthy food. Go to MealMovement.com, and when you order, let them know Lisa Hall #4321 sent you. Lisa’s clients are loving the food, getting great results, and actually saving money on their grocery bills. A whole day’s worth of food is under $14.00. Check it out!

Art Takes Hold at R.M.S. Entering the RMS art classroom, an assault of colorful expression directs your eye around the room and up to the ceiling, where individual tiles painted by 8th grade students have become a mosaic of calling cards, each with a personal imprint. Thematically represented are sports, cars, bands & music, cartoon figures, a very stylish Cat in the Hat, even a pop-art Mona Lisa whose cartoon bubble says “Leo, dear. How much longer is this going to take?”

Word Portrait - by Megan Stubbs

Now in her 6th year teaching art at RMS, Mary Rodgers has never known a boring moment, saying, “It’s something different every day.” Principal Charles Smith makes a point of showing all visitors the art room. Also underway is this year’s entry for SCAC’s Painted Fence competition, the work of 8th graders. Last year’s RMS entry won 1st place in the middle-intermediate school category, entitled Hope For Japan, referencing the tsunami. Three students from the year round art program showed 3-D mixed media papier-mache masks. After studying different mask styles from all parts of the world, they were asked to create a self-representational mask. Alix Lowery chose the "unique, unusual and underappreciated elephant". “Making this mask turned out to be really challenging when it came to the trunk,” she said. “The blue trunk sports a pom-pom made of yarn at the tip. It represents water coming in and out.”

Andrew Hill, Wes Rich, Chris, Ross and Austin Dubberly are all graduates of Pelham High School

UM Falcon Baseball Team features local All Americans The University of Montevallo’s 2012 baseball team certainly has the bases loaded when it comes to talent and honors. Several players have been named to impressive lists and won incredible honors. Head Coach Chandler Rose commented, “Each year and each team features a unique group of guys. We will start to see how their identity forms as the season progresses.” Two of Rose’s hardworking players, Austin Dubberly and Chris Ross, not only shine on the field, but also carry an impressive resumé and together have won a number of honors. We sat down with each of these players as they gave us a closer look at Montevallo’s baseball program and how influential it has been in their lives. Pelham High grad Austin Dubberly shared that Montevallo has been an awesome experience. “I’ve really enjoyed it and loved that it had that small town feeling. I want to finish strong and win some championships,” he said. Austin chose Montevallo for its “winning tradition in baseball, as well as for scholarships and its location.” Austin was named to the PBC-All Academic Team and is a Bronze Scholar on the PBC Presidential Honor Roll. Not only excelling in the classroom, but on the field as well, Austin was also named ABCA Second Team All-Region and All-PBC First Team and had a batting average of .352 last season. With a baseball career that started early, some of Austin’s fondest memories growing up are playing little league baseball. “I loved just being a kid and not really having a care. Little league was something fun to do with all my friends,” he said. As a junior this year, Austin is a business major and is currently undecided about what the future holds. “If going pro is an option—I’ll take the shot, but if not, I’ve got a few options in vmy degree or perhaps going overseas,” he said. PHS grad Andrew Hill is also on UM’s squad this spring. A Pelham native, Senior Chris Ross, is another Pelham High graduate. He was named ABCA Second Team All-Region and All-PBC Second Team and led the Falcons with a team high batting average of .405 last season. With graduation approaching Chris admits, “I would love to play pro ball, too, but I’ve got a really good degree (Kinesiology) if it doesn’t happen. I would like to maybe even be a coach myself someday.”
Senior Wes Rich rounds out the Pelham High contingent playing for the Falcons baseball team this season. With guys like these on the squad, it is easy to see where Coach Rose gets his enthusiasm for this season. About the team as a whole, Coach Rose commented, “They give us great effort and a great attitude. We’ve got a lot of talent and have continued to get better.” Coach Rose emphasized that his team was extremely hard working and that they had done everything asked of them. “They deserve a fun and successful season. If they continue to play hard and do the things they have been taught, then they will have success,” he said. Good luck to these young men as they pursue their conference pennant in 2012!

Tanner Jackson Signs With CACC

Tanner Jackson, who plays both first and third base for the Pelham Panthers, recently signed a scholarship to continue his baseball career playing for Central Alabama Community College. CACC’s Athletic Director and Head Coach Wynn Fletcher was present for the signing ceremony, held along with that of teammate, Tyler Millsap. “I look forward to playing college baseball for a team that can help me develop my skills both as a hitter and first baseman. I want to be a baseball coach after college, and I want to learn as much about the game as possible, so a great baseball coach and mentor is very important in my choice of schools. I’m a hard worker who is always first to workouts and practice, and I am usually the last person to leave. I’m looking forward to my college baseball experience after this season,” said Tanner. Best of luck to Tanner Jackson as he plays out his senior season on the diamond for the Pelham Panthers!

Justin Forehand Signs With UAB Justin Forehand poses with family members at a signing ceremony held in the Pelham High cafeteria February 1st. Forehand was the only player from Pelham to sign a Division 1 football scholarship this year. The Panthers are sure to miss his blocking abilities on the offensive line next season, but in humble fashion, he says there are plenty of capable hands on deck to fill his shoes.“We have an excellent conditioning program here at Pelham,” he said.

protect many more houses in the area. In addition to Ingenuity Park, Ingenuity also owns the Gaslight House, a wellknown facility on Helena Road that hosts weddings, receptions, reunions, parties and other events. Originally, Rick planned to build Ingenuity’s headquarters behind the Gaslight House and create a 1.7 acre campus environment that included extra parking for events. However, Ingenuity’s vice president of operations’ wife and daughter asked to run the Gaslight House in conjunction with their catering business. Rick said, “they did a great job with the Gaslight House and since they thought it was better to keep all of the natural area behind the gazebo and courtyard, we decided that we had to find another place for Ingenuity’s headquarters.” That led to the purchase of the property across the street from the Gaslight House and the development of Ingenuity Park. Rick remains involved with the Gaslight House, but Tony Johnson, a long-time friend and former teammate at Pelham High School, now runs the facility. They proudly say that it is “Panther Owned and Operated”. Despite his brutal schedule, Rick has a strong desire to contribute to this community that has meant so much to him. Although he lived in a number of large cities in the U.S. and Europe and traveled the world for his career, he says, “I never felt at home anywhere besides Pelham. I grew up, went to school, played ball and learned many of life’s important lessons here.” So 14 years ago when he and his wife, Joni, thought about where they wanted to raise their children--Robert, 16; Kristen, 15; and Connor, 12—they quickly decided that it was time to move back to Rick’s hometown. “Now Joni’s even more at home here than I am,” he says with a grin. That’s doubtful considering the way he talks about this community, the “Pelham Green” Ingenuity shirts and Rick’s ongoing involvement in the city. “We are very fortunate that our children have been able to grow up here surrounded by family and friends,” he

says. “This was never clearer than when our oldest child got very sick five years ago. We felt a great outpouring of love and support from the community.” Rick has coached many kids on local baseball and football teams and continues his support for our school teams in a variety of ways. He also volunteered his time and corporate resources for efforts that have helped the city of Pelham save more than $1 million to date on power and telecommunication expenses. Rick says that he has enjoyed his work behind the scenes for Pelham, but has realized that he needs to do more to help. Therefore, Rick has decided to run for city council. “As much as we love Pelham, we are also aware of the challenges we face as a community,” he says. “This is not the Pelham that I grew up in, and that is both positive and negative. I believe that many of our residents feel that our challenges have put us at a disadvantage in some ways to the surrounding communities.” His business, technology and strategy experience, as well as his contacts across the state, could prove beneficial to the city. “I am fiscally conservative but I also believe that we have to be proactive in trying to bring more business and jobs as we redevelop our city,” he says. “Being passive is not an option at this point – we have to aggressively address our issues and make sure that our residents can be proud of Pelham. Community spirit is key to our future and everything we do as a city in some way needs to contribute to this.” He adds, “I still believe in my heart and my head that our best days are ahead of us. I know that many other people in Pelham can also see our opportunities, but we have to come together and leverage all of the tremendous assets we have in order to achieve our potential. I can’t tell you how proud I am of Pelham when I see our residents get passionate about an issue. We need that passion focused on making sure that Pelham remains the kind of community that brought so many people here and pulled some of us back home.” For more information on Rick’s companies, see www.TeamIngenuity.com and www.GaslightHouse.com.

Saturday January 28 The polar plunge, a huge fund raiser for the northern torch run programs, took place for a second year in Alabama at Oak Mountain State Park. Law Enforcement agencies and others participated to raise funds and awareness for Alabama Special Olympics. Over 60 “plungers” raised $15,000 by diving into the frigid waters of the lake. Last year the international organization collected $42 million.

New VIS Vice Principal is No Stranger to a Challenge! VIS has a new Assistant Principal, Robin Hollingsworth, previously a reading coach at the school for eight years. She assumed her new duties in January. Robin and her husband Brent, who works in publications for UA’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, are both longtime Shelby County residents and Class of ’90 PHS graduates. Her teaching/education degree is from the University of Montevallo. “Here at VIS, my goal is to instill persistence in our students. We have our PAWS program which stands for a ‘positive attitude wins success.’ Success depends on making good choices and assuming responsibility for our actions and attitude.” “It is healthy to keep in mind that life itself is forever a learning experience,” she adds. In an unexpected turn of events, Hollingsworth had a heart attack last summer. “It really rocked my family’s world,” she says. A few chest pains were her only symptoms, but at the emergency room her heart stopped for ten minutes. She was shocked eight times and put into an induced coma. An artery tear was later diagnosed and her recovery time was a relatively short two weeks. “It was definitely a wake up call, and I spent a lot of time reflecting. The experience made me vow to slow down my hectic pace, to take time to appreciate and enjoy the simple things in life and take nothing for granted,” Hollingsworth said. Her out-of-school time is spent with their four children: Jordan, Reece and Riley Coston, ages 15, 11 and 10 respectively, and 3-year-old Cole Hollingsworth. They all enjoy arts and crafts activities, and Reece plays baseball. Riley is excited about her first participation in the Pelham Day of Pageants. Welcome to your new office, Ms. Hollingsworth!

Yard of the Month Calvin and Shirley Hatcher moved to their hilltop acreage on Dogwood Lane when Pelham was just a sparsely developed strip on Hwy 31. Now, some 41 years later, their home and yard is a 360 degree panorama on a pristinely maintained hillside, coaxed to near perfection by Shirley. “When we were younger, we enjoyed lots of activities in the yard with the children. I had lots of birdhouses, birdbaths and holiday decorations. Now I’ve cut back on that,” she said. But she has not cut back on her daily ministrations in the yard. Potted plants from one season end up incorporated into the terraced side garden that reaches from street to house up the steep slope. Hydrangeas, one of Shirley’s favorite plants are interspersed with mahonia, hollies, forsythia, azaleas, dwarf Alberta spruce and hostas in the shadier areas. Hanging baskets freshly sporting pansies are used as winter accents throughout front, back and side yards. Summertime finds a carpet of white impatiens flowing throughout the beds. The lawn expanse is smooth and thick and Shirley still personally mows it—since recovering from a broken kneecap two years ago. Sometimes her hours in the yard and garden require a bowl of butter pecan ice cream afterwards. Calvin can be depended on to grocery shop and to help out when it’s time to replenish the mulch. Even before retirement, their yard was a welllandscaped model, and of course changes have transpired through the years. Recently added was a border to the

left of the driveway. Timbers define a swath of 2x2 foot squares alternately planted with boxwood and variegated Liriope (hardy and excellent for preventing erosion) that form a checkered pattern. Calvin Hatcher retired about nine years ago after twenty years spent at Ernest McCarty Ford. Previously he spent 27 years as a service manager at a dealership in Montevallo, where he was born, so he knows many a Shelby County resident. For years the Calvin Hatcher Band was a Saturday night staple playing at Camp Branch and the old Maylene school. Calvin remembers Ruby Myers as a regular every week. Calvin took up the fiddle around age 10 with the influence of a musical mother and fiddle-playing grandfather and embraced the country genre (not redneck or ‘corny’ songs) singing and playing hundreds of tunes such as Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, Okie From Muskogee, and Send Me the Pillow. Among Calvin’s favorite country artists are Ray Price (For the Good Times), Merle

Haggard, Marty Robbins, Bobby Carver, and Gene Watson. Calvin still gets up to Nashville to join The Pickers, a longtime group of country musicians that still periodically gathers to play. A couple of years back, the Hatchers attended a party at Russ Hicks home. Hicks is a staff musician at the Ryman Auditorium and Hall of Fame Steel Guitarist, and his wife Laney grew up with Calvin in Montevallo. Four years ago, following a day of gutter cleaning and multiple trips up and down his two-story ladder, Calvin went for a regular check-up and was informed that he was in critical need of bypass surgery. Although he had experienced no pain at all, the five bypasses that resulted have kept him on this earth with Shirley and their progeny (now including great grandchildren) in their hilltop Eden. As Shirley, with an arm around Calvin’s waist says, “He’s a keeper!”

Pelham Panthers Ruling on the Baseball/Softball Diamonds This Season

Pelham’s varsity baseball and softball teams are both on their way to great seasons this year. Coach Jeff Mauldin, whose baseball team is 20-0 as this goes to press and ranked No. 1 in the state and on several national services as high as No. 9, says this year’s team is comprised of some of the best in all his years of coaching. “And I’m not talking about talent, although it is very good. These kids are some of the best people I have ever had the pleasure to coach,” he said. “It’s funny, but as I was driving home from Virginia after my mother’s funeral recently, I couldn’t wait to get back and be around these guys. They have become like family to me. Whether we’re playing cards or ping pong, they give me a comfort. Then I get them on the practice field and I push them until they don’t like me so much anymore,” he laughs. “Then we go play some more cards.” The practice part is evident, as is the camaraderie this team has established. “They play as an unselfish unit,” he went on. “Each is willing to sacrifice for the good of the team to help accomplish our goals.” I know that ranking means nothing at the mid-point, but if this team continues to work hard and stays hungry, the sky is the limit for the Panthers this year! Similarly, Softball Coach Amy Sullivan says her team was a little heart-broken after losing its first game a couple of weeks back to rival Hoover, but should bounce back. Like Coach Mauldin said about his boys, Amy says her girls are playing very hard and are each other’s biggest fan and supporter. “We have an outstanding team chemistry this season, and it is nice to coach a team that doesn’t worry about their individual stats,” she said. As this goes to press, the team is playing a gold tournament in Tennessee over Spring Break. Here’s to bringing home the bacon ladies! Best of luck to all our Pelham Panther ball teams as they finish the home stretch of their seasons.

Amidst passionate interjections of support, the former senator spoke on the issues he felt affected the election the most, emphasizing the importance of a conservative candidate’s victory in November. He mentioned the looming threat of radical Islam to the nation’s security, and the economic threat of overseas manufacturing. He proposed tax restructuring, outlining his plan to remove “Obamacare” and all of Obama’s new regulations to create jobs. Santorum’s self described vision of a stronger and better America does not fall on deaf ears. His supporters are many in Pelham (and in Alabama), and he left the Ciivic Complex to eager handshakes and busy camera phones. Soon we will all know whether Santorum has a real shot at the White House. Regardless of who your favorite candidate happens to be November 6th, exercise your right as an American and let your voice be heard—Vote!

Shelby County’s Victory GMC named One of the Top Dealerships in the Nation for Outstanding Customer Experience! This rare accolade is touted in Forbes Magazine, USA Today, Dealer Magazine and Automotive News. In addition Victory will be honored at the 12th Annual Digital Dealer Conference in April and is recognized on WomenCertified.com as one of thirty-four Top Dealerships in the Nation for Outstanding Customer Experience. WomenCertified®, the voice of female consumers, awards businesses and brands based on consumer experience. WomenCertified gives women a collective voice to help identify businesses that deserve their loyalty and referrals. They are a trusted referral source for businesses and brands that women in local communities would recommend. Through customer surveys Victory GMC demonstrated not only great service, but a sincere commitment to meeting the needs and preferences of their female customers.“We are proud to be named one of the Top Dealerships in the nation for Outstanding Customer Experience and to be the only dealership in Alabama honored with this award. It is a true testament to the remarkable work of all the employees at Victory GMC. The customer experience we provide our clients is always our highest priority, and we are proud of the exceptional work we do, every day.” says Warren Bailey, President of Victory GMC. Articles featuring the nationally

recognized dealerships have been published in major publications describing the importance of an outstanding customer experience and specifically the outstanding customer experiences of women. There’s an old adage that just might be true: “when you’re able to satisfy the wants and needs of a woman, you’ve superseded those of a man.” Car dealerships are often feared and avoided by women due to historical behaviors toward customers in general and specifically women. Changing that perception is a long term goal at Victory GMC and this award is a powerful measurement of success. “We like to say we’re refreshingly different.” says Brad Bailey, who also works in the family business and spearheads e-commerce and marketing efforts for the dealership. “When our customers shop here, or buy here, or service their vehicle here – we want them to be pleased with our effort to treat them the right way. And that’s what this award says.”Victory has recently been featured in local publications for its strong family values and unique business philosophy. This is the first time notoriety of a nationwide magnitude has been awarded to Victory and there’s a good chance it won’t be the last. Victory GMC is located off I-65 in Calera and operates a used car dealership on Hwy. 17 in Helena. It’s owners are partners in the new Blue Rain Car Wash currently under construction next to the new ALDI on Pelham Parkway.

Status of High School Expansion Project

(over 5 years)

As many of you know, the classroom addition at Pelham High has been at a standstill since the removal of the contractor. This has been a very difficult process but one that we have monitored closely with the Bonding Company. One thing we have maintained as a non-negotiable at this point is that when all is said and done the project must be completed by the opening of school in August. I can report to you that the bonding company has selected a new contractor and we hope to begin work again to finish the project within the next few weeks. Students Exploring Everyday Dreams and Skills At The Growing Place, A Learning Cottage and Greenhouse, special education students wear their purpose proudly on their bright green shirts and nametags. Five of the eight county schools that attend The Growing Place contributed a motto and logo that are incorporated into all aspects of this program. The t-shirt back sports the Vincent High acronym, DIRT—Developing Individual Readiness for Tomorrow. Teachers Lacy Jordan from Pelham High and Judith Archer from Oak Mountain High were with their students on a recent Monday. “This program focuses on transition,” said Archer. “We train them (up to age 21) to transition from home to high school to work or perhaps to Occupational Community College, technical study that allows them to work toward their Alabama Occupational Diploma. Inside the Growing Cottage, rooms are designed to replicate home with a living

room, office area, bedroom, kitchen and dining area where they also gather for art activities. The Special Ed teachers use a monthly lesson plan to direct the students through a series of life skills. Addressed are eating healthy and exercising—the students have begun learning yoga poses from the Smart Board just received for use in their office area. This will also give them access to other learning software and allows them to practice social skills while playing games. Each week, they cook a microwave dish or spaghetti. Learning to prepare a basic dish like macaroni and cheese builds self-confidence and lets them be a part of helping at home. They learn the measurement system (including basic fractions) for cooking. They practice cleaning out a refrigerator, doing laundry (they wash Linda Nolen Learning Center team uniforms), hanging up clothes, making up a bed. They discuss what to do if there is a fire.

Wheeler Wrecker Service 3180 Lee Street, Pelham On Friday, basic grooming skills are addressed—the boys clip their nails and the girls get their nails polished. Organizational skills are an important focus within each activity as well as social skills when applicable. “Every child is different. We work within the parameters of the abilities and motor skills of each individual,” said Lacy Jordan. Jordan, who is in her first year of teaching says, “This is training and preparation for them to live on their own, should they wish. I truly feel this is what I was called to do and I enjoy teaching them to be contributing members of society.” These students may later work in their community under a Job Coach, bagging groceries, for example, or shadow another worker, perhaps a greeter at Walmart. Cheryl Brennan, Job Coach, is very excited about the opportunities presented with the adjacent 24x48-foot greenhouse. Above the door, a sign reads—Students Exploring Everyday Dreams and Skills or SEEDS (from PHS) and in smaller letters, DreamGreen, Chelsea High’s contribution. On the door is the motto from Shelby County High— Planting Seeds Today, Planning for the Future. “Our greenhouse is equipped with an irrigation system. Students will be assigned various tasks and be a part of an actual business, right down to punching a time clock and tracking their hours,” Brennan said. As an entity, they will learn to grow herbs and annuals that will also be for sale to the public, with proceeds being reinvested in this program.

Also at state, she competed in the long jump for the second time in her athletic career; jumping a new personal best. She placed second overall and secured a second silver medal. Caitland’s outdoor season is off to an impressive start, too. At Vestavia’s King of the Mountain meet last weekend, Smith ran a blistering 12.03 seconds in the 100 meter dash, broke the meet record, won the gold medal, and met the National Silver Standard. This time puts her first in the state of Alabama and catapults her to a top twenty spot in the national rankings. Not satisfied with having just one meet record, Smith went on to break another one in the 200 meter dash. Her 25.2 second time puts her on top in the state and on the Milesplit Elite list. While competition in the Alabama 6A division is tough and rankings may change, one thing is certain; Caitland is going to be a fierce opponent on the track or on the field.

South African United Nations in Alabama?!?

On January 26, teams from all across the state gathered at Birmingham Southern College to participate in Junior United Nation Assembly (JUNA). JUNA is a student-run model United Nations Assembly for Alabama students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade that aims to increase awareness of world issues and demonstrate how the United Nations works. Each “delegation” includes 4-8 students who, with help from their teacher sponsor, research their chosen nation, identify an issue in that country, and write a resolution that proposes a solution to the problem. Over 30 schools participated this year representing countries from around the globe including the United States, Bosnia- Herzegovina, China, and Israel. Riverchase Middle School participated for the first time this year representing the country of South Africa. Students carried their flag in the parade of nations, presented a resolution to fight human trafficking, and vigorously debated resolutions presented by other delegations. Students enjoyed meeting other students from around the state and learning about the issues other countries face. Representatives were: 6th grade-Hannah Walsh; 7th gradeDaniel Palacios; 8th grade-Jenna Bennett, Mari Evilyn Morgan, Misty Nichols, and Anna Smith.
